(More customer reviews)I have owned this filter for a couple years now and it works brilliantly, it always quickly gets the water crystal clear after I have muddied up the water from cleaning the aquarium, it is very easy to use and clean except for the biological media bouncing all over the place like bacteria infused Kix cereal and the priming feature is brilliant. Also this thing is in the open in my bedroom and I can't hear a thing as long as I put a pad under it so it doesn't vibrate against floor. The only complaint I have is the water pressure dropping over the years. When I first bought it, the ecco 2234 would put so much pressure into the tank it turned it into a river with the current, the fish used to go swim in the current like salmon. Unfortunately no amount of cleaning and scrubbing and replacing filters gets the pressure and water circulation back to what it was when I first bought it. I had purchased this for a tank that is half the size the filter is rated for so the filter does absolutely fine even with the weak pressure. I would recommend this filter, however make sure you buy one that is rated for a much larger tank.

(More customer reviews)I am a big fan of canister vacuums, and when my old one recently broke I turned to Amazon to research all the latest models. I decided to buy the DigiPro because of the many features it offered for a great price. I am pleased to report that it performs better than I expected, and I was happy with my old one so I expected quite a bit. I like how it allows me to control the amount of suction power, the adjustments for various carpet heights/hard floors, and the ability to turn on/off the brushes. It has washable HEPA filters so there are no expensive filters to replace and it even has a light that comes on when it is time to change the bag. The cord has a push button retractor so the cord rewinds itself and stores out of the way.
I have 3 kids, 1 dog, and 1 cat, so needless to say I have plenty to clean up. It's nice knowing that tucked away in the closet is a great vacuum that can help me tackle any mess. This vacuum is definitely worthy of a 5 star review.

(More customer reviews)UPDATE: WOULD REDUCE TO 2 STARS. At no charge, the manufacturer sent a replacement cover to correct the broken rivet. The customer service was good. They suggested bending the wheel into place to straighten the Now, however, 17 months after purchase, the electric power nozzle does not turn on. This follows on several weeks of the nozzle turning on and off intermittently. Now I wish I had purchased the vacuum from a physical store with a buyer protection program. My new strategy is to buy cheap vacuums on a buyer protection plan and get the broken parts replaced. This was way too expensive for the grief.

ORIGINAL: I bought this because I was tired of the expensive, plastic vacuums falling apart within the first year of use. While this vacuum is incredibly powerful (indeed it sucks the area rugs right off the floor) it's not the indestructible stainless steel canister vacuum of my childhood. Within the first 4 months a rivet broke loose from the canister, making it impossible to close the vacuum. I tape it shut for use now. One wheel drags as well, leaving long black scuff marks on my white floors. I'm underwhelmed, but perhaps the manufacturer will make good on the warranty.

If you have a large home or don't like to empty the container often, try something else. This little guy is great for smaller homes & apartments & those who don't like to work hard at vacuuming.

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Hoover carpet shampooer recently, and was very pleased with performance and quality, so naturally I looked at Hoover's line of vacuums. The price for the canister was a bit much, I thought---but I liked the idea of the freedom it offered, having had uprights for the last 10 years. My first impression was that the quality of the plastic wasn't there, so only 3 stars--for example, if you open the top to reveal the two small attachments (the other two: floor/brush and upholstery won't fit anywhere), the lid seems like it wouldn't take much pressure to accidently snap it off. Also, when it arrived, the plastic window covering wasn't attached--no problem, it snapped right in---but it left me with an unsettled feeling about my purchase. The good news is that it's pretty easy to roll, the handle is adjustable, and for the first time in ages I can actually vacuum under my bed :) I also like the way the canister secures the handle; it doesn't take much more room than the upright. The suction is good, as I haven't seen my carpet's nap in a while; it's around 5 years old. Overall, I think if it were priced a little less or the plastic was more durable, I'd feel better...but with both Hoover products, my carpet is looking more like its old 'new' self.

From 3 Stars to 1: About 8 months to a year after the purchase, the retractable cord started to have issues, and there seemed to be a power-connection problem too. This year the handle (or wand), which was my favorite feature because it moves up and down has broken somewhere, and it won't hold a new position. Suction isn't good anymore, and the bag changing is frequent and messy. Finally, while initially I felt it gave me more freedom in ease of use, it actually is a royal pain to maneuver anywhere: frequently tips over, and pivotal hose difficult to pivot.

UPDATE Nov 2010: I purchased a Shark Navigator in October, with a Square Trade Warranty---and feel LOTS better about it. The Hoover is now my husband's choice for vacuuming out the cars.

I am pleasantly surprised by this little machine...the suction is great, it's not too loud, doesn't clog, and it's lightweight.Plus the price is right!!I was looking into getting a miele until I found this.I use this at my vacation home (a 60 year old ranch home that produces a LOT of dust) where all the floors are hardwood or tile and I have an area rug.The vac works fairly well on the area rug, too.The handle feels much more solid than the previous machine I had and doesn't fall apart. And I actually prefer the bag to the bagless version I previously had. It is so much easier to change the bag than pull out a canister and have dust flying everywhere.I highly recommend this for someone who has a lot of hardwood floors and wants to get up ALL the dust on the floors, in the corners, under the sofas!!!

(More customer reviews)This vac was impressive out of the box. the suction was amazing... for a week. You quickly will discover that his vac takes an enormous amount of TLC. If you have a woman in the house with longish hair, or pets, it will clog up immediately.You have to use your fingers or a tool to pull out the debris EVERY time you vacuum. The filter pad has direct contact with debris, so it need to be replaced or washed every few vacuums.WE VACUUM EVERY DAY.. not carpet.. hard wood floors.. and this vac lasted a month before it completely died, despite all our extra care of unclogging, etc.
I'm not sure what it is supposed to vacuum up. It can't handle hair.. it chokes on anything bigger than a cheerio.
Miserable, awful product.Went into the garbage today.
I suspect it has probably already been discontinued.
PLEASE don't waste your money.

We have different flooring types, multiple levels in the house, animals, long hair and children, as well as living in a never ending construction zone in the center of allergy alley.Thus, I need a fairly heavy performing vacuum that manages flooring transitions as well as being able to do stairs and furniture.

If that weren't asking a lot already, I need it to be heavy enough to be multifiltered and high powered, but light enough that I can tote it up the stairs.

I've had the Platinum Hoover Canister for a 3 months now, and I've been pleased with the performance.This one replaced a previous Windtunnel, and while I miss a few things from the old version (like different power settings), all in all, the new version outperforms the older version.

Pros:
Suction is fantastic.Transitioning from area rugs to hardwoods and then to carpet is easy.Super long power cord lets you do multiple areas without having to unplug and replug. Filters, filters, filters.Allergies in the house have become noticeably better with this unit. It's a lot more quiet that previous versions.Powerhead is fantastic for getting critter hair off the furniture and drapes. Reset button on the main head is a wonderful thing, if like me, you have ninja shoelaces in unlikely places; such as those cleverly hidden by small children who have kicked their shoes under the couch.Almost no dust escapes the vacuum while it is running, and while it is all in one unit...but that leads us to the cons...

Cons:
Emptying this vacuum is not for the wheezy.You will get dirty, you will have a cloud of dust, you will curse yourself and the Hoover engineers if you make the mistake of emptying it in the house.Trust me on this one.The only good way to empty it is to take the canister out to your big trash can, standing upwind and praying.

As well, the canister has collection areas that cannot be touched, washed or otherwise cleaned.I realize that the engineering design behind this was to keep the user away from the dirt, but it also means that if something gets caked in there, like if you clean on a humid day...you're kinda hosed. (No pun intended....ok, a *little* intended.) It's as though the engineers had *seen* someone use a vacuum, but didn't actually vacuum anything themselves, and so hadn't quite worked through the final step of cleaning the vacuum itself.

Still, the minor inconvenience of what I think is a poor engineering decision on that one part, is outweighed by the performance, the price point, and the significant reliability that I've gotten from other Hoover products.

For a neat person with a small space, this vacuum is probably overkill...but for large houses filled with dirt tracking children and animals...this vac is a clear winner in it's price range.

(More customer reviews)Our Hoover wind tunnel vacuum was beginning to show some wear after 6 years (power cord insulation broken) so we decided to spend a little more money and buy a Dyson DC14. As soon as it was out of the box and turned on it made a horrible grinding racket so it went right back in the box and back to the store. I was gun shy about buying another vacuum and spent a lot more time trying them out. Having owned several Hoover vacuums including a carpet cleaner that I love, I began to think I shouldn't stray from a reliable brand but I was still open-minded as I shopped and used several different brands and models at the store. I found the Hoover Elite Cyclonic to be the best that I tried. It is very simple to operate, with common sense, intuitive hookups between the canister and hose and the hose and wand. The adjustable wand is heavy duty metal and clicks quickly and easily in and out of the power nozzle. The power nozzle itself has a light and a powered, spinning brush that I like. The cyclone canister holds plenty of dust and lint and is easy to empty. I was leery about buying a canister since I have always found uprights easy to move around but I have absolutely no trouble handling the Elite Cyclonic. The adjustable handle is a plus since I am tall and my wife is shorter, and we can both vacuum comfortably. An absolute plus given my worn electrical cord problem is the automatic cord reel, which winds the cord into the canister body at the touch of a spring-loaded button. The vacuum is powerful and pulled dust, lint, and hair out of the carpet as well as the Dyson I used, but with none of the noise and flimsyness that I experienced with that brand.
The ONLY minor complaint I have about this vacuum concerns the fact that since it is bagless, there is a slight dusty mess when emptying the canister container into the wastebasket. I believe this to be true with any of the bagless vacuums currently on the market, and it empties quite like the Dyson that I tried. This messy disposal is certainly offset by the convenience and cost savings of not having to buy replacement bags. I highly recommend this vacuum cleaner!

1.) Small - when I first received my shipment, I was a bit taken aback.The Box was 4'x2'x 1-1/2'.Gosh it was huge and a bit heavy (for a vac). Slowly I opened the package to find another box.A bit relieved, the size seemed a bit more appropriate. I quickly opened the box to find another box.Now we are talking - once this box was opened, I saw what I wanted - a small, good looking, lightweight vac! The Stainless Steel did give the vac a professional appearance.

2.) Lightweight - Definitely meets the bill.No larger in width and length than my keyboard, there will be no problem moving this vac about.

3.) Powerful - I didn't expect much from all the claims (4 horsepower and 95" of waterlift), but this little vac made me a believer in power.This is the first time I only needed to use the crevice tool for awkward corners.Those little pieces of fuzz and hairs that usually needed picked up with your fingers came right up.The seems in upholstery that filled with dust - clean!

4.) Quiet - My subjective is opinion says this machine is quiet for such a powerful vac.In fact, my IQAir Air Cleaner is louder.Switch the 2-speed switch to low (works similar to my old shop vac and this speed); now we are talking quiet!

5.) Long Hose - The 6.5 foot hose, lightweight and flexible does not make the grade.It's adequate for my purposes, but I may purchase a hose extension.

CONS:
1.) The dust bag is quite small (approx. 7" diameter by 5" deep) - this is to be expected in such a tiny package.
2.) Tools look and feel cheap, which is quite typical for all brands.They are however, effective.

(More customer reviews)You will love this unit until it's time to change the filter media, and then you will hate it with a passion.

This filter performs very well and is also remarkably quiet compared to other designs that filter an equivalent amount of water. However, the design is flawed by a number of issues that may cost you several gallons of spilled water per filter change. In addition, you should be aware that filter changes require the replacement of not one but two physical media -a black coarse-grained physical filter in the first stage and a white fine-grained water polishing filter in the last stage - and the cost can add up.
1. The four stages are supposed to fit neatly one on top of the other, with vertical pipe sections in one corner designed to interlock and carry unfiltered water down to the first stage. However, the third stage contains many small plastic balls designed to create a large surface area for biological filtration - and they are small enough to fit into this pipe and prevent the fourth stage fitting on top. It really, really does not help that these balls are made of polypropylene, which floats.
2. Moving, opening and closing the unit is a clumsy and heavy process, because it remains full of water at all times, until spilt, which is all too easy.
3. There is very little tolerance in the overall filter column height, which means that one rubber gasket slightly out of alignment, or one bio-ball out of place, is sufficient to prevent the unit from sealing properly when assembled. The only guaranteed way to get the thing put back together is to leave out the top-most piece of the filter column assembly - the guard intended to hold the water-polishing medium in place.
4. A locking lever at the top of the unit isolates the hoses that carry water to and from the aquarium. This means that you can remove the filter's top section without the hoses siphoning all the water out of your aquarium... unless you are backtracking to trouble-shoot problem #3 above, and forget to re-lock it. This is the most likely cause of large spillages.
5. There is a small but non-zero risk that one of the tubes running up to your aquarium may come unseated from the filter unit. If this happens overnight, as it did to my friend, you will wake up to find just a couple of inches of water left in your tank, depending on the arrangement of your filter intake.

If you can live with these problems - and to be fair, there are workarounds for every one - this is a fine filter.

Eheim ECCO External Canister Filter 2236 Review

(More customer reviews)We've had aquatic turtles for about a year now, that we keep in a 75 gallon aquarium. (soon moving to a 125gal. tank) Anybody that keeps turtles knows how much work can be involved in keeping their tank clear and clean. When we first started we were unsure of what we needed to do the job but we knew we needed something that could keep up with the demand turtles require in water filtration. Our inquires at the local pet supply store led us to use a Fluval canister system. This is also a great system but after a short time we came to realize that it just wasn't enough so we went out and got a Marineland Magnum 350 to compliment the Fluval. Between the two the tank was adequately filtered, but cleaning the Magnum was a pain, the Fluval was a little easier but still not as user friendly as the Eheim. Because filtration was just adequate we started feeding the turtles in a separate smaller tank to try and minimize food and turtle feces from the main tank. This helped quite alot but we still required yet another filtration system as we had moved the Fluval to the smaller tank. This is when we purchased the Eheim 2236 system. This filter in my opinion is much easier to maintain than he Magnum and Fluval systems. The only down side is priming the pump after cleaning as the self priming feature does not work as well as the others but it is, by far, much much easier to disassemble and clean than the other two. Had the priming mechanism worked better I would have given this a 5/5. This is our second Eheim 2236. We had to replace the original because our child did not reestablish water flow after a cleaning, and the pump head overheated and died.
