(More customer reviews)After the breaking in period I have been able to get this skimmer to produce reasonably dry, dark skimmate.I don't have to adjust it much and it is surprisingly tolerant of small changes in the water level.It is working well for me in the refugium of a 30 gallon setup that I did not need aggressive skimming for. I don't notice too much of a microbubble problem but I don't have this in the main tank anyway. I think most people looking for a small skimmer for a nano system would be pleased with this product.The only downside is that the water inlet is not near the surface to help with surface skimming, but most skimmers overlook this.

I would like to add that although the description says "hang on tank or suction" it should more accurately say hang in tank or suction as it is an internal, submersible type skimmer.

Austin Air HEGA (Allergy Machine) Air Purifier - Black Review

(More customer reviews)I have severe chemical sensitivities. I've tried almost every filter on the market that is supposed to take fragrances, etc. out of the air, but I've found none that lives up to their promises like the ones with the carbon filters by Austin. I have this in my home and it is certainly worth every penny I spent. Any perfumes or other fragrances that enter my home are taken care of pretty efficiently by this. For my 1100 sq. ft. home I keep this one in my bedroom and the Healthmate plus (also by Austin Air) in the living room and together they really keep the air clean. In fact, I usually cannot tell if there is a skunk nearby unless I open a door or a window...and my house is certainly not air tight.

The main difference between this one and the Healthmate Plus is that the Healthmate Plus works the best on chemicals/fragrances in the air where this one is a good all purpose filter that also takes fragrances out of the air. This is why I keep it in my bedroom - I have a dust allergy and while the Healthmate Plus is certainly good at taking dust out of the air but we chose the Allergy Machine for my bedroom.

There are three settings, low, medium and high. High is pretty loud, but not an irritating sound; low isn't too loud, but it is certainly not silent. You don't hear the motor, rather it is the airflow coming out that makes the sound. It is, what I consider, a gentle "white noise" sound.

It has wheels (they don't lock) that move very well and I've never had one fall off. In fact, I find these machines very well made - not shabby - and I've had them for five years. They are made of metal and not plastic and I've never had to air one out.

If you buy this for chemical sensitivities make sure it is the one with the carbon zeolite filter. If it is missing that one (and therefore about $100 cheaper) the other filters can become contaminated with fragrances and don't air out quickly. We accidentally didn't order the right filter the first time and found out the hard way; after days of airing one out outside with the filter running on full it didn't improve. We then ordered the carbon zeolite filter and were pleased that my husband didn't have a hard time taking this apart to replace the filter; it wasn't completely easy as the filter isn't really light, but it was certainly doable.

One thing you should do is to vacuum the holes on the outside once in a while because they will start getting a little clogged up with dust after a couple years (or less if you don't vacuum or dust often).

The filter is good for four years and if you contact the manufacturer before then needing a new one (we use ours ALL the time and so needed to replace ours after three) they will, as of a few months ago at least, prorate a replacement.

Overall, I'm very pleased and would highly recommend this.

(More customer reviews)I have owned this filter for a couple years now and it works brilliantly, it always quickly gets the water crystal clear after I have muddied up the water from cleaning the aquarium, it is very easy to use and clean except for the biological media bouncing all over the place like bacteria infused Kix cereal and the priming feature is brilliant. Also this thing is in the open in my bedroom and I can't hear a thing as long as I put a pad under it so it doesn't vibrate against floor. The only complaint I have is the water pressure dropping over the years. When I first bought it, the ecco 2234 would put so much pressure into the tank it turned it into a river with the current, the fish used to go swim in the current like salmon. Unfortunately no amount of cleaning and scrubbing and replacing filters gets the pressure and water circulation back to what it was when I first bought it. I had purchased this for a tank that is half the size the filter is rated for so the filter does absolutely fine even with the weak pressure. I would recommend this filter, however make sure you buy one that is rated for a much larger tank.

Pressurized Pond Filter, 3000 UV Review

(More customer reviews)It took me about 6 months to actually get around to installing this in our pond, mostly because I was redoing the waterfall but I'm also quite lazy.

Previously I had tried using a 200 gallon gravity filter, media filtration, and a skimmer/pump combo. In all cases there was little improvement on algae blossoms, mosquito larvae, and water quality. After talking to a local shop, I sought out this specific filter because they had a lot of success with a showcase koi pond located behind the store.

After reading the relatively detailed instructions and following the advice of pond enthusiasts, installation took about 4 hours due to the rocky soil (it doesn't have to be in the soil but can sit flush). Since filtration efforts had been miserable failures prior to this, my hopes were high but my expectations sat far lower, so I plugged it in and went about my business.

Two weeks to the day, my pond is clear enough to make out fine details along the bottom; including areas where green frogs have burrowed into the muck. Not only is the pond clear enough to make out fine details, I finally discovered where a slow leak was coming from (liner is sinking). As a final reward, of sorts anyway, there was also a revelation in finding two long forgotten lawn ornaments, a bunch of toys tossed in long ago by my daughter or her friends, and the skeletal remains of a cat.

I will have to wait until spring and summer to see how well the UV works on controlling algae at peak levels of sunshine and mosquito larvae but with the rapid development of clarity I am feeling confident that we'll be able to maintain good water quality. Highly recommend this filter!

(More customer reviews)We looked at getting a "real" pool but couldn't justify the cost.This arrived quickly and was complete.We did pay the extra to have the site prepared, we have a pretty good slope to our yard and really did not like the idea of all of that digging.Once the water compacted the soil, there is still a very minor dip at one end, only about one inch difference total but enough to notice with the water level.I personally don't think that is possible to have dirt completely level.Be sure to check for stones, even a few inches down from the surface.The weight of the water will accent these bumps pretty well.
I had read other reviews that said it was a pain to put up and with three small kids, we opted for a pool installer to set it up.Wish we hadn't.It was Lincoln logs, easy as pie to put together.You definitely need two or more people though.The pieces fit together easily but snugly, especially once the water started going in.The kids have a tendency to hang on the sides as they adjust goggles and whatnot, but it is fine.We did upgrade the ladder to one with a bigger platform and a gate for the kids' safety.
The pump is wonderful.We had a 12' round with the most pitiful pump the year before.We had algae and sediment problems all summer.It was a serious pain.This pump actually moves a lot of water.I had purchased a used PoolFrog system from Ebay and put that in line with the pump.One mineral cartridge a season, and one BacPac every 6 weeks, and I swear that I never had to add a single thing all summer.The water was clear and beautiful every day.
The cleaning kit that came with pool works great too.The skimmer and vacuum really get the sand and grass off the bottom.It never looked bad until I was done sweeping, then I looked at what it picked up.Yuck!I had to sweep about two or three times over the season, simply because of grass stuck to feet and things.
Honestly, we love it.It is big enough for several kids and a few adults, it isn't obnoxious blue, and I get to spend more time IN my pool, than MAINTAINING my pool.
Don't follow the enclosed directions for winterizing.You will crack the plunger valves like we did.A cheap fix though, $30 for two new valves and it is as good as new.We live in NE Ohio and left it up for the winter with a chemical kit in it before and it was fine.
The solar cover that comes with it is sad.Upgrade to a bubble one.
That's it.
We love it.Couldn't be happier.
****It is now more than halfway into the second season and the pool is still great.We actually added a solar heater to the pool this year and the pump works fine with it.Our local pool store tried to tell us the pump wasn't strong enough to push the water through the heater and the frog but it is fantastic.We actually have to turn the pump off sometimes to keep the water from getting too warm.The vacuum works with the heater intalled also.No tears, fading or discoloration of the liner, interior or exterior.Still love it.****

Marineland Eclipse System 2 Hood Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this hood and paired it with a 20 gal glass tank. This is my first tank and I've found it to be very easy and hassle free. The tank stays very clean and clear and the fish seem to be very healthy and happy. It may be a little pricey compared to a standard setup, but for me, the ease of use and convenience of having everything in one package is worth it. And the top access makes maintenance easy. I currently have 5 zebra danios, 6 cory cats and 3 oto cats in the tank and all seem to be doing very well. I would highly recommend this item for the beginner.

I would also highly recommed purchasing and studying several books on fishkeeping (I bought and read at least 4) before purchasing any system and definitely before purchasing any fish!

Wandering about I could not deny my instant love for a feisty beautiful little guy the size of a small drapery tassel, I brought him home (instant gratification and instant love is my middle name)...and proceeded to give him 'Hot Temper's' life all over again (yes...in a bowl), but this time I thought he might benefit from living at work with me (I work all the time)...fast forward to cute little fish, living on my desk, and between calls me looking up just what might make him happy (er)...I come to a sudden realization that I sucked as a fish mom(formerly) and needed to give the little guy what he truly deserved, more oxygen, more "toys", more room and heat.I bought this little aquarium wonder (w/a black top),bye bye bowl, and wow have I got one happy fish!This tank is an easy set up,the filter (that worried me sick) is great, it will not swallow or eat your Betta (as far as I can tell so far...thank goodness!),he is not struggling through any major currents and as far as I can tell, he is a happy camper (or show off). I purchased a small heater to keep his temp at what is most conducive to his normal habitat,my Betta is making bubbles nests, and showing off like a full finned champ. I always thought I had a happy Betta, until now, this fish is unbelievably active and showy.I know it's a fish, but he sure reminds me of a puppy with fins!I love this little tank, perfect on a desk top, easy to set up, perfect for a Betta (just buy a heater, plants, gravel and hiding nook and you're set!) Love this!!

(More customer reviews)I love this pump so far. The Aquaclear 20 is perfect for a 29 gallon tank. Previous Penguin powerhead was awful. A pet store recommended and ordered the 660 for my 29 gallon tank. It was way too much power with no way to adjust the output. My fish were getting blown around the tank. Even worse was the vibration. Even tried rocks on top of the cover to stop the rattling. Down graded to 4 stars because the bubble valve doesn't adjust to a tiny amount of bubbles without spurting them out off and on again. You either get spurts or a LOT of bubbles. To be fair the Penguin air valve was fancier but didn't work any better.

This filter performs very well and is also remarkably quiet compared to other designs that filter an equivalent amount of water. However, the design is flawed by a number of issues that may cost you several gallons of spilled water per filter change. In addition, you should be aware that filter changes require the replacement of not one but two physical media -a black coarse-grained physical filter in the first stage and a white fine-grained water polishing filter in the last stage - and the cost can add up.
1. The four stages are supposed to fit neatly one on top of the other, with vertical pipe sections in one corner designed to interlock and carry unfiltered water down to the first stage. However, the third stage contains many small plastic balls designed to create a large surface area for biological filtration - and they are small enough to fit into this pipe and prevent the fourth stage fitting on top. It really, really does not help that these balls are made of polypropylene, which floats.
2. Moving, opening and closing the unit is a clumsy and heavy process, because it remains full of water at all times, until spilt, which is all too easy.
3. There is very little tolerance in the overall filter column height, which means that one rubber gasket slightly out of alignment, or one bio-ball out of place, is sufficient to prevent the unit from sealing properly when assembled. The only guaranteed way to get the thing put back together is to leave out the top-most piece of the filter column assembly - the guard intended to hold the water-polishing medium in place.
4. A locking lever at the top of the unit isolates the hoses that carry water to and from the aquarium. This means that you can remove the filter's top section without the hoses siphoning all the water out of your aquarium... unless you are backtracking to trouble-shoot problem #3 above, and forget to re-lock it. This is the most likely cause of large spillages.
5. There is a small but non-zero risk that one of the tubes running up to your aquarium may come unseated from the filter unit. If this happens overnight, as it did to my friend, you will wake up to find just a couple of inches of water left in your tank, depending on the arrangement of your filter intake.

If you can live with these problems - and to be fair, there are workarounds for every one - this is a fine filter.
