(More customer reviews)I've used this pump now for about a year and it still works perfectly. Water circulation is outstanding. Only gripe I would have is that they need to be primed after every water change. For some reason, they hold the air inside the pump preventing water from flowing. Simple remedy is to just turn the unit upside down in the water for a few seconds to let the air out, once the water starts flowing again, just reinsert it back into the filter tube. Works perfect after that.

Eheim ECCO External Canister Filter 2236 Review

(More customer reviews)We've had aquatic turtles for about a year now, that we keep in a 75 gallon aquarium. (soon moving to a 125gal. tank) Anybody that keeps turtles knows how much work can be involved in keeping their tank clear and clean. When we first started we were unsure of what we needed to do the job but we knew we needed something that could keep up with the demand turtles require in water filtration. Our inquires at the local pet supply store led us to use a Fluval canister system. This is also a great system but after a short time we came to realize that it just wasn't enough so we went out and got a Marineland Magnum 350 to compliment the Fluval. Between the two the tank was adequately filtered, but cleaning the Magnum was a pain, the Fluval was a little easier but still not as user friendly as the Eheim. Because filtration was just adequate we started feeding the turtles in a separate smaller tank to try and minimize food and turtle feces from the main tank. This helped quite alot but we still required yet another filtration system as we had moved the Fluval to the smaller tank. This is when we purchased the Eheim 2236 system. This filter in my opinion is much easier to maintain than he Magnum and Fluval systems. The only down side is priming the pump after cleaning as the self priming feature does not work as well as the others but it is, by far, much much easier to disassemble and clean than the other two. Had the priming mechanism worked better I would have given this a 5/5. This is our second Eheim 2236. We had to replace the original because our child did not reestablish water flow after a cleaning, and the pump head overheated and died.

Whisper Ex70 Aquarium Power Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I have 7 tanks set up all with power filters. Half of my power filter is tetra EX. They have been in this line of business for a long time and have been known to be reliable and trust worthy. Power filter that hang at the back of the tank are design for aquarium of 5 to 80 gallons. For tanks of 10 to 55 gallon I definitely would say power filter is the best type of filter for them. You should get a power filter that is rated twice the size of your tank and may be even up to 3 times if you have a lot of "living things" in your tank. So the EX 70 is perfect for 29 gallon tanks and reasonable for 48 gallon tanks. This filter uses 2 cartridges and there are some advantages for using 2. You can clean or replace one at a time and you still have the other one working for you.
Power filter performs three filtration functions, mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. Each type of power filter has its advantage and disadvantages and none is perfect for all three functions. The EX is good in mechanical and chemical filtration and is great for biological filtration. The chemical filtration is great if you use bio bag and added more chemicals inside the bag instead of using the sealed cartridge. The sealed cartridge is more expensive but easier to handle. The bio bag is more time consuming to use but you can add more and different types of chemicals and I think the mechanical filtrations is also better. (The carbon that comes with the bio bag is the same amount as in the seal cartridge and you should add a lot more chemicals to the bio bag and I like the Ammo-Carbon) Another advantage of the bio bag is if you need to remove the carbon for some medication you can just empty the chemical out of the bag and keep the bag for mechanical filtration. If you use the sealed cartridge you have to remove the whole cartridge and lost the mechanical filtration (or replace it with an empty bio bag).
The noise level of the EX is better than most other power filters. The best power filter especially in mechanical filtrations is Aqua Clear. Unfortunately Aqua Clear has one big disadvantage. It will not restart by itself after a power failure. You need a UPS (uninterrupted power supply used by computer system) to make sure if you lost power for a short period of time the Aqua Clear stays working. If you do not have an UPS using Aqua Clear is a big risk and if there is a power failure and you are away for a few days you may lost your whole tank.

(More customer reviews)My 10 gallon tank had sea horses in it and because of that,the tank can certainly get filthy in a hurry. Since I never had Sea Horses, I didn't think to buy the clean team which includes: snails, crabs, and a starfish. The Sea Horses, which are beautiful creatures are also deliberately slow eaters. Uneaten food will sit for a very long time. My water got cloudy very quickly and I found that I had to change the water a lot but this didn't do much good. I felt like I had to get a really powerful filter usually reserved for a 45 gallon tank. I orginally had a whisper filter that seemed like it didn't work. To top it off, the filter's motor burnt out. I was without a filter and didn't know what to do.

I went to my pet shop and this filter was recommend. What a difference! Within an hour, the water was so clear, it seemed like it was filtered water with no one in it. I was amazed. Even with Sea Horses, this filter was able to keep up and do the job. The filter uses a pad and has a biological filtration area (there is no need to add any biological agent at all, the filter "creates it." You can add some to help speed things along. The filter pad is inexpensive. I bought a 3-pack. The one knock is that it creates a strong stream that will send weak fish flying ie Sea Horses. One of my Sea Horses loved it though, he seemed to purposely swim near the filter current, get swept away, and come back. Also, if your tank is not filled high enough, the current (out take) will "dig" a hole in your sand/gravel. Other than that, this is a terrific filter.

(More customer reviews)I have owned a whisper filter in the past and find them a superior product.So I was not hesitant to buy this one.The whisper does work better than most standard filter systems that come with aquariums these days. So thats why after 1 month I ditched the Aqueon filter system that came with the tank I purchased and switched to the Whisper filter.The only thing I would say that is negative is the sound... it isn't a whisper at all.. more like a water fall in your house.So if you find the sound of running water irritating this isn't the system for you.I find it soothing so it isn't a problem.

(More customer reviews)I set up the Aqua Clear in water that was yellow and pretty cloudy. The Aqua Clear clear cleaned the water and diminished the yellow tint within a day.

I was being told by my local pet store that the Fluval filter was the best filter for my turtles. Even with cloudy yellow water, my local pet store said it was natural and fine.

It wasn't so fine with me. I could hardly see my turtles and had to change the filters every two weeks and use a turkey baster every day to pick up larger debris which that filter couldn't handle.

Now I have very happy turtles that are enjoying the water more and getting out of their shells, I'll let my turtles speak for themselves.

Even though the filter comes with sponge, carbon and BioMax, you can set it up which ever way you want. The sponges can be washed in aquarium water to save a few dollars and maintain your biological filter. Cleans easily. The old number represented the gallons per hour. The new number represents the maximum size aquarium. Good luck.
