(More customer reviews)After the breaking in period I have been able to get this skimmer to produce reasonably dry, dark skimmate.I don't have to adjust it much and it is surprisingly tolerant of small changes in the water level.It is working well for me in the refugium of a 30 gallon setup that I did not need aggressive skimming for. I don't notice too much of a microbubble problem but I don't have this in the main tank anyway. I think most people looking for a small skimmer for a nano system would be pleased with this product.The only downside is that the water inlet is not near the surface to help with surface skimming, but most skimmers overlook this.

I would like to add that although the description says "hang on tank or suction" it should more accurately say hang in tank or suction as it is an internal, submersible type skimmer.

Ecco Comfort 2234 Canister Filter with Media Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned this filter for a couple years now and it works brilliantly, it always quickly gets the water crystal clear after I have muddied up the water from cleaning the aquarium, it is very easy to use and clean except for the biological media bouncing all over the place like bacteria infused Kix cereal and the priming feature is brilliant. Also this thing is in the open in my bedroom and I can't hear a thing as long as I put a pad under it so it doesn't vibrate against floor. The only complaint I have is the water pressure dropping over the years. When I first bought it, the ecco 2234 would put so much pressure into the tank it turned it into a river with the current, the fish used to go swim in the current like salmon. Unfortunately no amount of cleaning and scrubbing and replacing filters gets the pressure and water circulation back to what it was when I first bought it. I had purchased this for a tank that is half the size the filter is rated for so the filter does absolutely fine even with the weak pressure. I would recommend this filter, however make sure you buy one that is rated for a much larger tank.

I originally bought one for my 90 gal tank, but soon replaced it with a skimmer that could handle the tank, I now have the SeaClone 100 on my 20 gallon tank with just an undulated triggerfish in. This product is only somewhat useful if you replace the plastic valve they give you with a brass one.

(More customer reviews)I recommend purchasing these machines straight from the manufacturer, he'll give you all the info you need and it is less expensive.Just google "precipitation water generators".The man is brilliant and is inventing simply amazing things, such as these water generators.

I searched for years to figure out how to filter out all the chemicals, metals, bacteria, prescription medications, ect. that is contaminating the municipal drinking water.This is it.The filtration process in this unit alone is probably enough to filter out most everything from the city drinking water, but even better; since the water you'll be drinking comes from the humidity, none of that junk is there to begin with.

The higher the humidity level in your area, the quicker and more efficiently it will make water.

It took a while to get the new appliance smell out of the drinking water but after that, the water coming from it was, without a doubt, the cleanest tasting drinking water I've ever tasted.My friend told me it was like drinking snow and I know it's even better than that.

However, I speak of the unit in past tense because currently I am not using it.Unfortunately, I let mine sit for quite some time and mold grew in the collection tank.The unit cycles the water to keep it purified, but when there is enough mold growing it just can't be filtered well enough and it mold gets in your glass.
For this reason, I had originally planned to rate this appliance with four stars.But to downplay such an amazing piece of equipment because of my own neglect is arrogantly ignorant.So my suggestion: Use it and follow the recommended cleaning instructions.

If I could make one improvement to this machine it would be to have an option to keep the unit on but be able to turn off the water production.

(More customer reviews)I bought this version because the eheim version costs almost 3x as much and this one gets good reviews from folks at Plantedtank.To attach it to my Eheim intake (5/8" not 1/2"), I used the 90* elbow and joined the intake pipe to it using a short segment of 5/8" hose.The black center piece that stick up is the adjuster which opens and closes the lower openings.The more you allow flow through the bottom, the less the surface suction will be.Also, I had to drill a piece of plastic from my canopy to accommodate the height of the adjuster.But in so doing, you can increase or decrease the surface skimmer flow on the fly.Just remember to keep the top of the surface skimmer clean periodically.

Previously, I had a sponge prefilter on my intake pipe.I could still have one--just cut a short 2" piece of foam and slip it over the lower intake.

There are some bubbles being entrained into the intake from the surface water being sucked in.This has not been an issue.However, those with CO2 injected tanks should understand that outgassing of CO2 will occur from this area.This may not be a problem with intermittent activation--turn the center adjuster for a brief period when surface scum accumulates, then turn off most of the surface flow once the surface scum is cleared (takes about 20" or so).

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for two Mississippi Map Turtles. It runs pretty quiet, though there is a little bit of vibration depending on what it is stuck to but for the most part you have to listen to hear it. I noticed that it works a lot better and more efficient if you buy the activated carbon in a carton not made by ZooMed. ZooMed makes little carbon pellets that do not seem to work as well as the carbon chips that you can buy for fish filters, which are cheaper since you can buy them in bulk. You only need to fill the little lid inside the filter and one carton can last a while depending on how much you change it. Once I changed the activated carbon my water was crystal clear within a couple of days. The sponges can usually be washed under the tap and scrubbed if needed. I would not suggest using soap, and they should not need to be replaced as consistently as the carbon does unless they no longer come clean.

(More customer reviews)I was all set to pick up a similar Pur model when this caught my eye at Wal-Mart.I wasn't even aware that DuPont made water filtration products, but after reading the fine print on the box, I decided to give it a try.It has a 60 day money back guarantee, plus a 5 year warranty.If, like me, you are carefully reviewing every single line of text on the box, you may notice it seems to filter less contaminants than other products.Open the box and read the manual, however, and you'll see that it provides the same level of filtration.Why they chose not to advertise this more prominently, I don't know.

It's a fairly sturdy unit, but still plastic.It comes with three different colored caps (black, white, and chrome), although you're stuck with chrome for the base.The included filter is good for 100 gallons, which is standard.200 gallon models are available.Also of note, the replacement filters for DuPont models are much cheaper than Pur or Brita.

After the initial 5 minute priming, where (I assume) the activated carbon is being wetted, and any loose particles are flushed out, I filled a glass with filtered water, and one with unfiltered.Now, our tap water in CT isn't horrible.It does have a rather sharp chlorine aftertaste, though, which was my main reason for getting a filter.Immediately I could see that the filtered water was clearer.I never thought the tap water was murky until I saw the difference.I then gave them both to my wife to try, without telling her which was which.She said the filtered water definitely tasted better, which I agreed with.

DuPont says they don't need to use minerals to enhance the taste of their water; that their filtration system is adequate.Pur, if you've noticed, touts their minerals as a feature of their water filters.So does it matter?Well, the best tasting water I've ever had was country well water, when I lived in Nebraska.Full of minerals, and with a clean, sweet taste.DuPont's filter makes city water taste like it's fresh from a pure spring.Minerals or not, it seems to have a sweeter taste, and is definitely devoid of any chlorine or harsh chemical overtones.

The only installation issue I had was leaking from where it attaches to the faucet.However, the included roll of plumber's tape and a tighter grip solved that problem.The tape was a nice touch, I thought.They also include a wide variety of adapters, should your faucet head have some strange threading.The instructions are very clear on how to assemble and install this product, and barring any leaks, you'll be up and running in just a few minutes.

The only downside to this product is a lack of any sort of filter life indication.Even Pur's cheaper models have a colored bar that slowly changes to red to indicate the end of the filter's life.DuPont does sell a more expensive model (FM350CH Deluxe) with a digital counter to indicate gallons filtered, but with this, you're on your own.Pur says a 100 gallon filter is good for roughly 3 months with average water usage, so I'd go from there.

All in all, a solid product for a great price.Highly recommended.

Eheim ECCO External Canister Filter 2236 Review

(More customer reviews)We've had aquatic turtles for about a year now, that we keep in a 75 gallon aquarium. (soon moving to a 125gal. tank) Anybody that keeps turtles knows how much work can be involved in keeping their tank clear and clean. When we first started we were unsure of what we needed to do the job but we knew we needed something that could keep up with the demand turtles require in water filtration. Our inquires at the local pet supply store led us to use a Fluval canister system. This is also a great system but after a short time we came to realize that it just wasn't enough so we went out and got a Marineland Magnum 350 to compliment the Fluval. Between the two the tank was adequately filtered, but cleaning the Magnum was a pain, the Fluval was a little easier but still not as user friendly as the Eheim. Because filtration was just adequate we started feeding the turtles in a separate smaller tank to try and minimize food and turtle feces from the main tank. This helped quite alot but we still required yet another filtration system as we had moved the Fluval to the smaller tank. This is when we purchased the Eheim 2236 system. This filter in my opinion is much easier to maintain than he Magnum and Fluval systems. The only down side is priming the pump after cleaning as the self priming feature does not work as well as the others but it is, by far, much much easier to disassemble and clean than the other two. Had the priming mechanism worked better I would have given this a 5/5. This is our second Eheim 2236. We had to replace the original because our child did not reestablish water flow after a cleaning, and the pump head overheated and died.

With the intake on the bottom and the exhaust on the top, there is simply no place for water to bypass the media and hence the filtration is far more efficient. Some people complain that the filter is quite difficult to clean. However, the manual shows an easy way to do this. I have kept mine without cleaning for 3 months or and my heavily planted fresh water aquarium has been doing great. The media is reusable and reusable and reusable. Get my point? :-)
They are extremely efficient. A bit more expensive that the rest of canister filters out in the market. But in the long run, these are better since they last longer and the rarely break down.

PUR Ultimate Faucet Mount Review

When you first attach the PUR filter, it works beautifully. Water comes out fast, and comes out clean. But fairly soon, and well before the filter is supposedly used up, the filter cuts down on the flow as it gets more and more clogged. After a while it can take 30 seconds to fill up a glass of water. Ours also has a leakage problem that is exacerbated the more clogged the filter is (the leak comes from the plastic covering that tells you how used up the filter is)...Don't know if ours is defective or if this is typical.
We have since bought a PUR pitcher filtration system, and that seems to be more convenient to use because you don't have to sit there like a ... waiting for your glass to fill up.
PUR is superior to BRITA filters, by the way, because they also filter giardia and cryptosporidium, two bacteria that can cause intestinal illnesses. This is especially important if you live in areas with iffy water systems (i.e. St. Petersburg, Russia, which is full of giardia/Mexico) or if you have a weak immune system.
The PUR filters work out to about 25 cents per gallon of filtered water. It costs more to filter dirtier water and less to filter cleaner water.
When you finally throw out the used filter, try cracking it open and having a look at all the nasty gunk that you didn't put into your body. It's definitely worth the price, don't you think?

(More customer reviews)This filter is dysfunctional from the beginning.The primer does not work.The "in" and "out" flow valves are reversed (you would expect "out" to mean water out of the filter and into the tank, but no, it means "out" of the tank and into the filter; vice versa for the "in" valve).No matter how many times you pump the primer, you cannot get water to flow through from your tank and through the cannister.

(More customer reviews)My 10 gallon tank had sea horses in it and because of that,the tank can certainly get filthy in a hurry. Since I never had Sea Horses, I didn't think to buy the clean team which includes: snails, crabs, and a starfish. The Sea Horses, which are beautiful creatures are also deliberately slow eaters. Uneaten food will sit for a very long time. My water got cloudy very quickly and I found that I had to change the water a lot but this didn't do much good. I felt like I had to get a really powerful filter usually reserved for a 45 gallon tank. I orginally had a whisper filter that seemed like it didn't work. To top it off, the filter's motor burnt out. I was without a filter and didn't know what to do.

I went to my pet shop and this filter was recommend. What a difference! Within an hour, the water was so clear, it seemed like it was filtered water with no one in it. I was amazed. Even with Sea Horses, this filter was able to keep up and do the job. The filter uses a pad and has a biological filtration area (there is no need to add any biological agent at all, the filter "creates it." You can add some to help speed things along. The filter pad is inexpensive. I bought a 3-pack. The one knock is that it creates a strong stream that will send weak fish flying ie Sea Horses. One of my Sea Horses loved it though, he seemed to purposely swim near the filter current, get swept away, and come back. Also, if your tank is not filled high enough, the current (out take) will "dig" a hole in your sand/gravel. Other than that, this is a terrific filter.

(More customer reviews)I keep an adult red-eared slider semi-aquatic turtle who is very very very messy... like most turtle owners I have struggled to keep the water clean over the years ( frequent water changes- replacing filter cartridges having been a must.) My previous filter was destroyed by the turtle and I started looking online for a replacement. I wanted a high performance filter. I bought this filter about a month ago and have been amazed since then. I keep the animal in a pre-formed pond liner in my kitchen with around 60 gallons of water. I have not so far have had to change the water ( just add some) and it is clear and free of odors. The carbon in the filter really does wonder at purifying and the blue sleeve catches the debris very well. I have replaced the sleeve twice and the carbon once in a month time. The bio wheels are I think a must for turtles as they oxygenate the water and create more movement. I had to modified the set-up a bit in order to instal it on the pond liner instead of an aquarium, which took a little time, but so far have had zero problems. I highly recommend this product to anybody who takes care of turtles. It is powerful, quiet and very well made.

So I bought this and it came right away.It is super easy to assemble, just snap the lid into place if I remember correctly, and put the filter in.

The water tastes great!! And I am super-picky about my water.I don't like the mineral taste in some bottled waters from springs.I like the reverse osmosis taste, and this is like that.Make sure if you pour some water out of the pitcher that you ALWAYS fill it back up with cold water again.Keep it full as much as you can.

Great product and highly recommend!
