If you can get someone to answer the phone or return your messages all they will do is make you jump through hoops until you are so frustrated you just give up. The whole time your fish suffer. I purchased an XP filter and it quit working after 2 weeks. You're better off spending your money on ANY OTHER FILTER.

(More customer reviews)I love this pump so far. The Aquaclear 20 is perfect for a 29 gallon tank. Previous Penguin powerhead was awful. A pet store recommended and ordered the 660 for my 29 gallon tank. It was way too much power with no way to adjust the output. My fish were getting blown around the tank. Even worse was the vibration. Even tried rocks on top of the cover to stop the rattling. Down graded to 4 stars because the bubble valve doesn't adjust to a tiny amount of bubbles without spurting them out off and on again. You either get spurts or a LOT of bubbles. To be fair the Penguin air valve was fancier but didn't work any better.

Whisper Ex70 Aquarium Power Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I have 7 tanks set up all with power filters. Half of my power filter is tetra EX. They have been in this line of business for a long time and have been known to be reliable and trust worthy. Power filter that hang at the back of the tank are design for aquarium of 5 to 80 gallons. For tanks of 10 to 55 gallon I definitely would say power filter is the best type of filter for them. You should get a power filter that is rated twice the size of your tank and may be even up to 3 times if you have a lot of "living things" in your tank. So the EX 70 is perfect for 29 gallon tanks and reasonable for 48 gallon tanks. This filter uses 2 cartridges and there are some advantages for using 2. You can clean or replace one at a time and you still have the other one working for you.
Power filter performs three filtration functions, mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. Each type of power filter has its advantage and disadvantages and none is perfect for all three functions. The EX is good in mechanical and chemical filtration and is great for biological filtration. The chemical filtration is great if you use bio bag and added more chemicals inside the bag instead of using the sealed cartridge. The sealed cartridge is more expensive but easier to handle. The bio bag is more time consuming to use but you can add more and different types of chemicals and I think the mechanical filtrations is also better. (The carbon that comes with the bio bag is the same amount as in the seal cartridge and you should add a lot more chemicals to the bio bag and I like the Ammo-Carbon) Another advantage of the bio bag is if you need to remove the carbon for some medication you can just empty the chemical out of the bag and keep the bag for mechanical filtration. If you use the sealed cartridge you have to remove the whole cartridge and lost the mechanical filtration (or replace it with an empty bio bag).
The noise level of the EX is better than most other power filters. The best power filter especially in mechanical filtrations is Aqua Clear. Unfortunately Aqua Clear has one big disadvantage. It will not restart by itself after a power failure. You need a UPS (uninterrupted power supply used by computer system) to make sure if you lost power for a short period of time the Aqua Clear stays working. If you do not have an UPS using Aqua Clear is a big risk and if there is a power failure and you are away for a few days you may lost your whole tank.

Rena Filstar Canister Power Filter, 175 gallon Review

(More customer reviews)Searched long to find the right filter. These Bio filters with multiple chambers for media is the way to go with turtles. We have a female red ear slider about 7 inches front to back of shell (she was about the size of a silver dollar when we got her two years ago). She is very messy andthe in tank filter was just not handling it. This filter with fresh water and a good shell scrubbing of our baby has worked fine. We used to have to clean her tank and change water every week to keep her water from getting too filthy. This filter in a forty gallon aquarium has been set up for three months now and other than adding water as it evaporates and cleaning her rocks we haven't had to do anything else except feed her. We did clean out the filter once because she made a mess of some fresh aquatic plants we bought for her. She chewed up fifteen dollars worth of plants in just two days. She probably ate some but most of them were chewed and left floating. The filter clogged from all the plant material. But I can't blame the filter for that. The water is always crystal clear. She seems to love her environment now.

There is a couple of things to keep in mind when using the filter for turtles. The intake tubing inside the tank comes in sections that have to be pushed together. They tend to loose prime at the connections because turtle tanks are only about half full and some of the connections are above the water level. I had to glue them together to keep the prime. The filter has to absolutely be at least 16 inches below the tank bottom. I set ours on the floor and the tank on the top of a 29 inch high credenza. When priming remember to fill the tube with water with the filter hose valve in the off position (the instructions will explain). Make sure there are no air leaks and screw on the cap tightly on the prime hole when you are done priming. With no air leaks in the intake hose, the tank about half full or more and the top of the filter about 16 inches below the bottom of the tank when you lock the hoses in place which opens the valves the weight of the water in the intake hose should pull water through the intake tube to fill the filter and you should at this point have a prime. This should now let you turn the filter on without loosing prime and your tank should stay clean like ours for months. This filter has three cannisters and each cannister has two chambers. We are using the foam layers as they came with the filter, two large pore followed by two small pore foams filters in the first cannister (this is from the bottom of the filter to the top). The water moves around the cannisters to the bottom of the filter and is pulled up to the top. So the set up is from the bottom up. The second cannister we used for the biomass. We used the round pellets in the first (bottom) chamber with a mesh top (included), followed by the star biomass media in the second chamber (top). In the third cannister we used nitrate/nitrite (white amonia media) in the first chamber followed by a mesh and then charcoal media in the second chamber with a micron filter on top followed by another mesh. Then we placed the top on that and closed it. After about a month and a half we had the plant incident and had to clean the filter. I just rinsed everything out real good except for the biomass media which I lightly rinsed (you want to keep the bacteria that collects on the media because this helps eat the chemicals in the water and solids). I then replaced everything again and it has been working great since. They recommend changing the carbon every month but we haven't yet. They also recommend changing the nitrate/nitrite media every ten months, so we have a while to go. The micron filter needs to be changed also after a few months. I wouldn't change the foam unless it is clogged to the point were I can't get it cleaned out. It is only to collect solids and retain them till they decompose and are absorbed by the bacteria.

I think any multiple chamber filter would work as well. I am skeptical about anything below three chambers for turtles. One large turtle I think is the equivalent of a thousand fish in feces and pee (that's just my guess). This filter is rated for a much bigger tank but I think a smaller filter would not have worked for a turtle as large as ours. Turtles do grow fast and keep growing. They also live for forty years so get a large filter that will handle larger tanks. If you can afford it I would go for the XP4 which is bigger and rated for larger aquariums. For turtles I think multiple chambers are really important because they do not need oxygen in the water since they do not have gills but they do need clean water to stay healthy and they are super, super, mega super messy.

The biggest complaints I have read from turtle owners about filters is getting a prime. Remember, you can not have any air leaks in the intake tube or hosing. We are going to look for a solid tube that we can cut to use for our intake so we do not have connections above the water.

Cons: Only the tubing, It should be a solid piece that you cut to size instead of multiple small pieces you connect together. But then again this setup works fine for fish tanks since the level of the water would always be above the connections. For turtle tanks which are only filled a little above half way you need to glue the connections above the water or find a solid tube to use instead.

So thats why after 1 month I ditched the Aqueon filter system that came with the tank I purchased and switched to the Whisper filter.The only thing I would say that is negative is the sound... it isn't a whisper at all.. more like a water fall in your house.So if you find the sound of running water irritating this isn't the system for you.I find it soothing so it isn't a problem.

Emperor 280 Power Filter - up to 50 Gallon Review

(More customer reviews)I'm using this filter in a 35 gallon show-tank with a fairly large turtle, and it is hands down the best over-the-side style filter that I have come across. My old filter Tetra Whisper EX45 Filtration System wasn't cutting it so I replaced it with this one.

WHATADIFFERENCE!

For starters, the Marineland filter is much larger and the filters cartridges are much larger as well. The uptake tube is roughly twice as large and comes with an extension that allows it to draw water from near the bottom of my tank, where all the gunk is at. The previous Tetra filter could only get about half-way down.

The next improvement is the addition of a media tray which lets me put in more activated carbon or zeolite, or whatever depending on my needs. From my experience, this means that I don't need to change filters as frequently and I can have custom filtration right out of the box. With the Tetra filter, you can put in a biobag Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridge - Large - 12 pk. - Unassembled but I find the Marineland system more robust.

From more quantitative testing, I've found that the ammonia levels have stayed consistently low with this filter. With my old filter, ammonia levels were all over the place and it felt like I was declaring chemical war.

This unit is also pretty quiet and it hasn't had an impeller problems. I do find though, that you really need to prime it (fill it with water) before turning it on, otherwise you'll hear grinding sounds and it will take a long time for the water to start flowing, if at all.

At the price point, I don't think there's a better widely available filter than this.

I own four of these filters and have been running continuously for more than three years! They are extremely quiet. I have experienced only two problems with these filters. First, the filters drain into the aquarium during power outages and will not restart on their own. Second, if not cleaned frequently the foam blocks will be pushed upwards and displace the cover. Overall, these are great filters and I would not replace them for another power filter.

Penguin Power Filter, 350 GPH Review

So i bought this since it's price tag was way cheaper than the 400.Ive been running this for about 2 months on my 75 gallon tank. I have an Oscar and they're messy eaters and leave particles in the water from some certain types of foods. The particles dissapear after 20 minutes due to the power filter's water gallon suction ratio.I completely love how silent it is. You need to fill the tank up to at least the waterfall lips of the filter so you wont hear the water splashing. Good good stuff here.

(More customer reviews)Hi..if you are reading this and looking for a new or replacement filter, AquaClears are great. My 70 (300) is extremely quiet and my aquarium is crystal clear. Even though the filter comes with sponge, carbon and BioMax, you can set it up which ever way you want. The sponges can be washed in aquarium water to save a few dollars and maintain your biological filter. Cleans easily. The old number represented the gallons per hour. The new number represents the maximum size aquarium. Good luck.

(More customer reviews)I got my fish tank in 1998 and had an older BioWheel filter. However it was pretty much DOA when I got it as the wheel didn't turn. I instead settled for an underground filter. However, the cartridge on that went bad last year (it always does every few months) and I forgot to replace it.

A few weeks ago I went to my Uncle's house. He's always been into fish tanks and I saw how clear his water was compared to mine. Being that I hadn't cleaned my tank in a while I figured I should revamp it when I got home. I thought maybe my filter needed replaced.

Upon my return home I cleaned the tank and bought this filter for $20 at Petsmart (Amazon is great but the $31 seems a bit high for this compared to what I got it for). It only took a few hours and my water suddenly looked as good as my Uncle's.

I also fixed the old filter, but this one works better. Sometimes I leave both of them on to provide extra oxygen. This filter has easy to change cartridges that need replaced about once a month or so. They'll probably set you back a bit, but based on this filter's performance so far I will definitely keep up the maintence.

Not noticeable when there's activity in the same room, but when the room is quiet you can definitely hear it.That being said, the filtration that this unit provides is EXCELLENT. My water is so clear I can see the warm-water currents coming out of my heater.Performs wonderfully, and I appreciate being able to dial-down the force of the filter....I have this one in my 10 gallon aquarium, and my fish didn't like the current at full blast.
