Crane Cow Cool Mist Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Although this humidifier looks like a toy, it works perfect fine.It is not the most high performance humidifier and it does not have any additional feature, like UV lamp or water filter, but it performs extremely well for its price.I bought it at around $30, before the price increased.Like all ultrasonic humidifier, it produces small water droplets using high energy acoustic action.The droplets are then delivered out using a small fan.It is extremely quiet that you will barely notice the sound even when you are going to sleep.The specification sheet states the power consumption is 32 W maximum, but it consumes less power in practice.Humidification is not necessary higher by operating the humidifier at higher power.At maximum power, the water droplets generated are very large and they will fall to the floor without increasing humidity.Thus, the humidifier should be operated at optimum power to generate finer water mist.Therefore, the operation power is lower than 32 W.For the same reason, the humidifer delivers 15-24 hours of performance with a galleon of water, instead of the 11 hour stated on the specification sheet.
It is important to point out, there is no extra replacement cost because this unit has no extra features.For this reason, it cannot eliminate mineral or bacteria in the water.So if there are minerals or bacterias, they will also be dispersed in the air.Filtered or distilled water should be used if tap water has minerals.Water should also be changed everyday and the unit should be clean every week to avoid bacteria buildup.I have noticed that you can put in trace amount of hydrogen peroxide to prevent bacterial growth.I suggest using about 1 teaspoon of home use (3%) hydrogen peroxide in a galleon of water.Doing so, I noticed that I do not have to change water everyday.Make sure you do not put too much peroxide, and do not put the humidifier next to your head during sleep after you added peroxide.

*Update*
Although the instruction manual suggests cleaning the water tank (top unit) with mild clorox blench solution, it does not mean you can clean the bottom unit with blench.I made the mistake and the paint/coating on the ultrasonic part is falling apart.At least this is why I think the coating is coming off.Now it cannot be used.Also my water has too much minerals in it, even with the PUR faucet filter, the humidifier still produces white dust.A reverse osmosis water purifier might do the job, but I do not have one.Good while it last, but I will have to get a different kind of humidifier for my next winter.I also like to down rate this humidifier to a 4 star, but Amazon does not allow me to change my star rating.It is still a pretty good for its low price ($30).*

*Super Update*Crane has now offer a mineral filter to minimize white dust.I have not use one, but I thought readers should be made aware of it.It is about $10-11 and it lasts ~2 months.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this humidifier at BBB and so far it is doing a good job. I wanted something that was quiet and didn't require replacement filters and I got it.

When adjusting the humidistat you can definitely see a change in the amount of mist on my machine. Many reviews talk about the demineralizing tablets and not knowing what to do with them. If you read the instruction manual it tells you at the end what to do with them. Fill your tank and drop them in. Depending if you have normal water you replace them every 3 months or so and if you have hard water they may need to be replaced more often.

If the light on the front of the machine is green you have enough water, if it turns red that means you need to add more water.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty good humidifier.It's the best one I've had in a long time.Because it is a recirculating system when it starts to go bad the gunk ends up in the water in the tub and it becomes a little rank. It is difficult to get into some of the places where minerals build up.You will want to filter the water you put in there, like with a Brita filter.Otherwise you will be taking it apart and cleaning it every month.And it really wasn't made to be taken apart.The best way I have found to clean it is to make a nice mix of water and white vinegar and let it sit in the tub to get the minerals off.Then just run it with the vinegar in it.Your house will smell like vinegar for a couple of hours, but it will dissolve all of the mineral buildup everywhere that you can't reach, and the machine will be very clean afterward.

Vicks Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Review

I have two of these humidifiers.

Pros:
1. High mist output - very clearly visible. It's like a fog machine! 'WOW!'
2. Mist volume control - many mist levels
3. Large water tank (20 hours of operation)
4. Direction control
5. Comes with it's own filter - but if you use distilled water you won't need to use the filter.

It's not silent but it is NOT loud by any means. I can sleep uninterrupted with it. My older humidifier produces the same noise level but my older humidifier produces a different frequency which disturbs my sleep. The Vick's is far superior to my old one.

Cons:
Like any humidifiers - you must keep it clean.
You have to keep the sonic agitator clean and free of dust/lint. A small bit of lint will negatively impact it's ability to produce high levels of mist. You don't even have to see the lint or dust.
Keeping the agitator clean is easy, don't touch it with bare hands - I only have to use running tap water on the agitator and it's dust/link free and it works like new every time.

(More customer reviews)This unit is the original travel/portable humidifier.I shopped around and looked at the several imitators, but decided to go with the Air-O-Swiss name/reputation that I know and love.

This unit is tiny, and comes with a power adapter with both US and European plugs and a soft cloth carry bag.

I use it at McMurdo Station, Antarctica where the average humidity is in the single digits.It puts out less water than my full-size Air-O-Swiss unit at home, but a remarkable amount for a unit this size.

The blue light that others have complained about is fairly bright - as most blue LEDs are - but it's no brighter than most night-lights, and hasn't bothered my sleep.The blue light switches to a red light when the water runs out... kind of a nice heads-up feature if you don't have the output set high enough to see the "steam" coming from the spout.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to make this purchase again, and I'd replace this unit with the same if needed (unless or until Air-O-Swiss comes out with their own new replacement/upgrade).There are a couple other copies that are less expensive, but I haven't tried them - I went with the quality/service that I trusted at the cost of the higher price tag.

SPT SU-3750 Ultrasonic Penguin-Shaped Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)I went looking for an affordable ultrasonic humidifier because I was tired of noisy fans and the other problems associated with evaporative machines.After a lot of research, I decided to try this one, partly because of its simplicity and partly because of pricing (i.e. not a disaster if it didn't work out).I was a little dubious about the small reservoir size, but it's not a problem at all.To keep a rather large room at ca. 35% in the dead of winter in MN (very dry subzero weather), one fill will last a bit over 24 hours, and of course longer than that in less extreme conditions. It's perfectly simple to fill and clean, and wonderfully quiet--just a steady hum that I barely notice, with occasional little glurps.
So far I've only seen a little white dust on the device itself, but not on nearby surfaces. The vapor seems to circulate best (i.e. up and out into the room) when it's placed well off the floor.On a 30" shelf, the vapor tended to flow downward, so I used a milk crate to raise it up a bit more, and that solved the problem.The only issue I've had with it so far was a fairly strong plastic/chemical smell at the beginning, but that's been diminishing with use.It's a great improvement over any of my previous humidifiers.

We have been through just about every type/brand of humidifier in our quest for the perfect one over the last 15 years. So when I pressed the "on" switch on our new "Venta Sonic VS205" I knew our quest was finally over. Out came an unbelievable "fog cloud" of humidity that gently wafted over the room. Later as the humidity level rose - monitored by the nifty LCD readout on the front - the unit suspended "cloud formation" and waited patiently until the room percentage had dropped below the set level and then resumed.

Pros::

1) Absolutley soundless!!! Many of the other brands worked fine but were so noisy we couldn't sleep.
2) Runs at least 24 hours on a fill (depending on what level you set it on - ours is 45% - 50%)
3) Instant gratification - monitors the humidity level in your room - not many actually do this - you just have to guess and never really know - so this is big.

Cons:

1) The only one - it's a bit tricky to fill. Have to turn the tank upside down and unscrew the filter. As an Industrial Designer I could come up with at least 3 better ways to do this - one being simply have another fill cap on the top. But this is really not a problem since the unit has so many other admirable features (AND - you only have to do this once a day!!)
