(More customer reviews)I have had several Holmes humidifiers and Lasko humidifiers since getting rid of the last of the old permanent console Sears belt humidifiers that clogged and put mineral dust into the air.

The Laskos just run and run season after season (clean them out at the end of each season) and replace the paper cascade with a metal Honeywell cascade once and forget it.Do not attempt to clean the aluminum cascade (or just replace the polymer cascades every year - they're really not filters, per se).

BTW - You cannot fill these in the sink, they are too tall; you must use the faucet in the bath tub or shower.The flow there is much faster and you can fill it up faster there, anyway!

I used to be able to get both Lasko and Holmes at Wal-Mart, but they seem to only carry the Holmes now.That does increase filter/wick sales since you are supposed to (and HAVE TO because they no longer wick water properly with mineral build up) replace that every month on the Holmes units.

On the other hand I pitched one Holmes whose wick clogged in 1 month and am keeping another in the bedroom as a back-up to the primary living room Lasko when it cannot maintain proper humidity during the coldest weather.The wicks constantly clog with minerals and quit working and the water valves on the containers never seem to open properly. (I have now re-engineered the valve openers so they always work, but why should the customer have to do this?)

I am tired of replacing Holmes filters or having the unit fail to operateand metal Honeywell filters will not "wick" water to keep this type working.I have even added spacers to solve the Holmes valve failure problem, but they have to be centered perfectly or the valves cock to the side and still fail to open!

Winter 2008 ADDENDUM:
After 4 years of operation I finally had to replace the metal cascade.
We also have noticed that these units do a pretty good job of cleaning the dust and cat hair out of the air (we have 3 cats).It does this in two ways, first, the filter catches most of the cat hair and can be backflushed every 2-3 months, secondly, the dust gets knocked down with the waterfall cascade and collected in the bottom of the container where there is a foam filter to prevent these particles from being recycled back to the pump.Wash out the bottom every couple of months and you have a pretty good air filter.
NOTE,: As an engineer, I modified the distribution tray on mine with larger holes so more water goes through the cascade and less is dumped over the overflow dam.Also put an orifice in the visual flow indicator to divert more back to the distribution tray.

ADDENDUM #2:Just had the motor die on another humidifier and just purchased a Lasko 1120.Small, compact, unobtrusive in the living room, lowest initial price and just RUN forever!This may be my last humidifier I'll ever have to purchase!

Winter 2009/10 ADDENDUM: The motor finally died in my last Lasko unit.I removed the dead motor/pump and installed an aquarium pump for the waterfall and a small fan from Rite-Aid Pharmacy, that fits perfectly into the cone and it is running like a champ.
Our humidity is running around 45% at 10 to 20 degrees and we can breathe again without waking up with a sore throat, dry eyes and dried out nose in the AM!!Lasko? Natural Cascade Humidifier

Honeywell HCM6013 Cool Mist Air Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)We bought the Honeywell HCM-6013i cool mist humidifier to replace a GermGuardin humidifier that stopped working after 90 days of use. So far, this unit is performing quite well.

According to the specification in the owner's manual, this unit is capable of outputting 11 gallons per day (I'm assuming per 24 hours). Do not confuse this with the unit's water holding capacity. In two separate tanks, the humidifier holds about a total of 3.5 gallons of water. And you will not notice any humidifying mist as you might with other types of humidifier. This humidifier works by the same principle as a swamp cooler.

I usually have the fan speed on low and the humidity level set on auto at 35%. At these settings, I have to fill the water tanks every one and a half day or so. The HCM-6013i built-in hygrometer (humidity sensor) is no where near accurate. Although I have the unit set on 35%, actual humidity measured by a separate and more accurate hygrometer, measures 45%. I recommend buying a separate hygrometer so that you can find the right humidity level. If you're not as picky as I am, you can always go by feel and adjust the humidity control up or down until you find your comfort level, to where the unit turn on or off based on the setting.

This unit fits together from essentially four pieces; the base, the motor housing, and the two water tanks. The pieces do not exactly fit together that well. The design of this unit reminds me of something that was made from the former USSR. It's clunky...but it works. It has no problem keeping up the desired humidity level when the AC is on and the outside relative humidity is 10% - 15%. It draws water from one of the two tanks at a time. When either one of the water tank is drained the unit makes a buzzing noise from the empty lighter tank. It's a little annoying, but a little tab or jolt usually resolves this buzzing noise.

I recommend buying a spare HC-14 replacement filter for this unit. I already notice that within a day if not hours of use the water-wicking filter mentioned was turning a little brown on the top. I don't know if the browning of the filter is due to using tap water for the humidifier or the air in my condo is that dirty. I hope it's the former rather than the latter.

The manual states that using tap water is OK because the water-wicking filter will absorb and retain the minerals in tap water, while the Protec water cleaning cartridge will help fight bacteria and other microbes in the water.

As mentioned above. This humidifier works about the same way as a swamp cooler. In a dry and warm environment, this humidifier does put out a noticeably cool breeze.

This product also boasts of having an "Air Washing Technology", and an independently controlled air ionizer. I can't comment too much about these features because I can't attest to how well they work. Again some swamp coolers can also claim of being able to wash the air as they cool...right? My gut feeling tells me that these features are a bit gimmicky. Does it really "clean" the air in my condo? Maybe. Does the air in my condo really need cleaning? Sometimes.

We had the water vacuumed out from the carpet and cleaned up but the basement smelled like wet dirty dog - we were concerned that it was going to smell much worse as it slowly dried out. We put a dehumidifier and our 2 GPs in the basement and let them all run. After everything finally dried out (which took a week) there has been no lingering odor or mold and if you walked into the room you would not even know we had water covering the entire carpeted floor last month. (More customer reviews)This filter is 14 inches tall and is 11 inches square which is large compared to many air filters, but if you are used to seeing the big ones all the time this one is so, excuse me - cute! Ok, so diminuative that after living with the big ones for five years I can't get over how I feel like a giant around it because it is identical to the big ones in every way except for its size and output. It is much quieter than the large ones because it isn't putting out as much air, but this is great for a little bedroom in our house and it takes care of both dust and chemicals.

I have severe chemical sensitivities and so I've tried almost every filter on the market that is supposed to take fragrances, etc. out of the air, but I've found none that lives up to their promises like this one does.

It has wheels (they don't lock) that move very well and I've never had one fall off. In fact, I find these machines very well made - not shabby. They are made of metal and not plastic and I've never had to air one out.

If you buy this for chemical sensitivities make sure it is the one with the carbon zeolite filter. If it is missing that one (and therefore cheaper) the other filters can become contaminated with fragrances and don't air out quickly.

One thing you should do is to vacuum the holes on the outside once in a while because they will start getting a little clogged up with dust after a couple years or sooner if you don't vacuum or dust regulary.

The filter is good for four years and if you contact the manufacturer before then needing a new one (we use ours ALL the time and so needed to replace ours after three) they will, as of a couple years ago ago at least, prorate a replacement.

It would be far more expensive and less effective to put one of these in each room of your house than getting a couple big ones for the whole house. I'd recommend this for traveling (the big ones are heavy and awkward to travel with, but these are quite nice) or for when you only need to clean the air in one room. It would probably work quite well in an office and isn't so loud you can't talk on the phone. Very nice.

Overall, I'm very pleased and would highly recommend this.

Honeywell HWM-500 UV Warm Moisture Humidifier Review

This is my first humidifier, but I am extremely satisfied with it.
The instruction is very clear and easy to follow.
It is easy to put together, simply attach the tank to the bottom.
All suggest to me that this is a very efficient machine for a warm mist humidifier(well, at least to me):

1.Within 30 minutes of use, it works and I can feel the difference.
2.No leaking.
3.No noise (slight bubbling sound is actually soothing to me, not noisy.)
4.Sturdy construction.
5.Humidity adjustable (many options, not just 2).
6.Large tank and easy to refill.
7.Low maintenance. (No filter required if you have regular tap/city water.)
8.Easy to clean. (With ultraviolet lights, cleaning isn't required on a weekly basis.)
9.For cats owners: My cats don't get scared of or hurt by it.

I don't think I could ask for more.

It's still great, although I did notice some issues:

1.A bit too much work and too heavy when refill:
For men, this might NOT be an issue, but for women like me, it might be.
To refill, the tank needs to be turned upside down because the tank cap is at the bottom of it.When I am to flip a full tank of water over and put it back onto the base, I do worry. It's quite heavy, and it gets a bit tiring since I do need to refill it every day.There is no easy access!

2.Frequency of refill:
Quote: "It requires no messy filters to replace and runs up to 24 hours each filling."I do need to refill it every 12 hours every day when I:
(1)have it on the highest humidity level
(2)have it on most of the time (12 hours)

So I do refill it every day I get up and every night before I go to bed.I assume it would last up to 24 hours like it says only if the humidity level is set at the lowest, which probably wouldn't cause an obvious difference to the room's humidity.

In all, it's still a good buy. It does help! I notice that I don't wake up with the driest skin in the morning anymore.

**A little tip**
A teaspoon of salt helps it evaporate more moisture, although it makes the water run out faster.

**I attached a picture of mine with my Treo next to it. The ratio should give a brief idea of how big the machine is.

HONEYWELL HCM890 Cool Moisture Duracraft Humidifier Review

I have electric heat from an 80's furnace that has a permanent filter I cannot replace so the air in here is bad. I have permanent post-nasal drip, my son is Croup sensitive and my DH is asthmatic. Warm Mist humidifiers aggravate sinus problems so *do not* use warm mist for sinus problems.Cool Mist are great for Sinus and preventing Croup but must use filters due to the nature of waterbourne mold in cool air technology. I use my humidifiers for a 160 sf and 145 sf rooms. I keep them on low each night, and use about half the tank. My filters last around six weeks because I do not use the pro-tech bulbs (they do not work). I use BestAir Water Treatment tablets, extra strength (the pink box.) I bleach treat the water tank plus vinegar clean the base every 2 1/2 months. Yes, cool mist humidifiers make noise (warm mist sterilize with the hot steam that comes out, are quiet) but this is the quietest one I've found.If the noise of a clothes dryer next to your bedroom bothers your sleep, then a cool mist will bug you too. After two weeks of constant nightly use, it "rattles" when misting; the seal between parts no longer holds because water now pours through the juncture of parts. I exchanged it. Again, the unit worked well at first, but now after three months, the "rattle" and leakage is evident. I am thinking that regular use wears the parts too fast, maybe if I only used it once in a while. At the very least, I do like the design and the ease of set up. It may even be worth a round of replacement parts.

I have the flush time set for 20hrs. No issues with mine other than it is allways in operation. I question Honeywell selection guide. Understanding differant variables, I still felt that the 6 gal a day was large enough, humidity is staying 40% to 50% dependant on conditions. I bought this in part due to the 5 year warranty.

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Product was relatively easy to install but I downloaded better instructions from an internet website than were included with the product. Also, my furnace had a 24v tap so the electrical hookup was easy.
Some notes:
1) I did not buy the installation kit because I did not need the sail switch (because of the 24v tap) and most of the cost of the kit is for this switch. It is much cheaper to buy only the pieces you need - they are carried at most hardware & building supply stores. Plan on spending about $30 on parts.
2) The template for cutting the humidifier hole into the duct is the instruction sheet. If I had not read this on another review, I would not have found it. Shame on Honeywell for not telling you this in the instructions!
3) Use the saddle valve to regulate the water flow to the unit, otherwise you will waste a lot of water. This was the only thing I disliked about it but I think this is the case with all new designs.
4) Instructions tell you that you can install the unit on either the supply (warm air) or return (cold air) duct. But most reviews I read from professionals recommend mounting the humidifier on the cold air return duct in case you have a water leak - will not ruin any of the furnace electronics or motor.
Overall I'm satisfied with this unit - will likely install one in both my kids houses.

(More customer reviews)I've gone though a lot of humidifiers, both hot and cold.Most of them either stop working after a year or two, or get so corroded or mildewed that you have to get rid of them.The Hunter humidifier doesn't corrode or get mildew, you can wash the pieces, especially the Permawick filter in the dishwasher, it lasts over 48 hours of constant running on high (over 72 hours on low), and has a nice little blue light that lights through the water, which gives a nice softening touch.I've now gotten one for each bedroom in my house, and am extremely happy with this product.

PROS:
This unit is quiet (on quietmist setting), does humidify a large space, and has a convenient humidity setting/readout, not to mention a large 4gallon tank.So yes, it does its job as it's supposed to.

CONS:
and this is a big CON job.Have you ever wondered why this 4-gallon humidifier is ~$70 when 1-2 gallon quiet mist tanks are going for around the same price? THIS IS WHY:The filters cost about $10 and you'll know it's time to change it when you smell a dead rat every two weeks - you can't cop out and pretend it's not there b/c whatever that filter does soaking in water, it really puts out some foul smell when it's "time to change".Say you'll need a humidifier to operate for 4 months in the winter (most likely way longer), that's 8 x $10 = $80 just to keep this thing going. Moreover, if you read the description of this item, it recommends you clean it EVERY DAY - sorry dudes, I've got a job, wife and kids, i don't need to add a humidifier to the family feeding and cleaning schedule.

I've "downgraded" to a 1-gallon humidifier that lasts the night in a 400sq foot room - that's ALL you need people.Forget the 4-gallon filter-guzzler.

(More customer reviews)I bought this humidifier because I discovered in the apartment I recently moved into, the heat makes the air in the apartment very dry.I wake up every cold morning with a dry mouth and my allergies bothering me.

I decided to purchase this for my bedroom just to run at night.My bedroom is probably 20' by 30', not very high ceilings, and even with this humidifier on high all night, I don't notice a difference.Plus, it is very loud on the high setting, almost at loud as an air conditioner.I also have a hard time believing that the tank is really 2 gallons.I haven't measured, but it barely seems 1 gallon in size.

It is advertised that it will last 3 full nights per refill, but that is on the low setting, and only if you sleep 6-7 hours a night.I'm sure it may work for a smaller room, probably a good buy for a kid's room, but not for any rooms that are even medium in size.Overall, go for a bigger and quieter humidifier, even if you have to pay a little extra cash.

(More customer reviews)This machine is well designed.Easy to use.I would say maybe a bit louder than some of the others on the market; however if you look closely some of the others don't cover pets.Yes, pets.I noticed that a lot of them would filter cat dander.Also, I wanted something that would address specifically mold.This does the trick.I can tell the house is cleaner and have had guest comment that the house doesn't smell like musty dog anymore (though I didn't know it did).

As I said, it's well designed with many things in mind.I'm rather keen on the fact that the lights on the device has 16 different light settings.I turned off the lights since I'm very light sensitive.

There is also the option to use other filters and not be tied into buying their filers only.Great savings in filers and energy.

What I was looking for: consumer report friendly, somewhat portable/sleek design, dog dander, mold, and energy.(dont' forget the energy cost - it can be way more than the filter cost)

Great buy!Considering buying another one for the bedroom.

(More customer reviews)I got this to humidify my kids room. Previously we had been using the old vick vaporizer but it only put out for about 6 hours and had some other issues with getting the mineral content of the water just right.

Anyway this is without a doubt the best humidfier I've ever used. Setup was a little confusing at first (where little parts went. The tube hole through the tank was a little disconcerting but after I understood its function I saw it wasn't going to slosh water everywhere.

For a humidfier it has a amazing number of options.

Warm Mist vs Cool
I had always used "warm mist" but my wife wanted "cool mist", this was the only one that had both. Warm and cool are relative terms however. When I think of warm mist I think of the Vicks which can scald you if you get to close. It heats the room up in operation. This device the warm mist is sort of warm. It takes a few minutes to warm up and if you put your hand over the output you can feel its warm but not hot. It goes to warm by pre-heating the water before it hits the vaporizer. In cool mist it just vaporizes.

Output-
You have two output controls, relative humidity and mist volume for lack of a better term. Think of it as fan speed (but no fan)You set the humidity and it spits out water as needed. I don't know where the sensor is but the position of the output nozzel can really affect its reading.

The tank seems to hold enough water for 24 hours of output or 2-3 nights of use. The output is plenty adequate for a bedroom.

Controls-
Lots of controls on/off, heat/no heat, humidity, output, timer, auto mode and more. This is the big difference betwen this and the lower end model. Someone finally figured out how to put a timer on a humidifier (imagine that). So it runs as many hours as you set it. The sleep mode sets all settings automatically and runs 8 hours. I love it.

Noise-
What noise, this thing is silent. No bubbling or hissing or fan noises.

Filling the tank-
Take it out, flip it, unscrew the deminerlization cartridage and fill er up. Not the most stable but it works. Carry handle makes it easy to take back.

Its everything you could possibaly want in a humidifier. Low maintence, easy enough to fill, quite, lots of settings for any need.

Beats the heck out of the old vicks and some fan based whicking mold catching filter units I've used. The closet thing I ever had was a drugstore one that spit out the good stuff for 15 minutes and then broke. This is a quality product (and price) and should last (I've had it 2 weeks at the time of writing). It may be expensive but it does what you want and will outlast many of the others. If you've got the money its worth it.

(More customer reviews)This is not a bad humidifier for the price. The main drawbacks are that it does not hold enough water to humidify a medium- to large-sized room for any length of time, and that it requires frequent and extensive cleaning.

Pros:

Style. It looks very nice. Its size (11"H x 11"W x 6.5"D) means that it will fit nicely on a nightstand or in a small corner.

Ease of use. It can be used right out of the box; it's not even necessary to read the instructions [Update: read the instructions on maintenance]. This unit is beyond self-explanatory. The tank is small enough that it can be filled at the kitchen sink, and it's very easy to carry even while full.

Quiet operation. It's pretty much silent except for a faint hissing sound and the occasional gurgle.

Features. It has two output settings (clearly marked by a picture of a single drop of water vs. a picture of three drops of water). The auto shut-off feature is nice, and I like the fact that it doesn't require filters. It doesn't produce the white dust that ultrasonic humidifiers spew out.

Cons:

Output. I turn it on when I go to bed at night. On the high setting, it runs completely dry long before I get up 7 hours later...and I wake up feeling dried out. On the low setting, it only puts out about half the water in the tank...and I wake up feeling dried out. The box says it's intended for medium-sized rooms, but it doesn't define "medium." My bedroom is about 17' x 14'. I probably should have purchased a unit intended for a "large" room.

Opening the tank. It forms a vacuum as it empties, and the cap can be very difficult to unscrew as a result. It takes quite a bit of effort to get it started; an elderly or disabled person likely wouldn't be able to unscrew it.

MAINTENANCE. It turns out that the unit has to be completely disassembled, soaked in vinegar, and scrubbed routinely. I neglected to do that, and the unit stopped working within less than a month. The auto shut-off would engage even though the unit was full of water, essentially reducing it to a $25 night light. Now that I've cleaned it, it is working again. The maintenance aspect is a pain. I am used to cool mist humidifiers, which simply require replacing the filters once a year. It is possible that the maintenance could be avoided if one used distilled water in the unit - but at about $1/gallon for distilled water, it would be cheaper just to buy a new humidifier every month.

Overall, I wish I'd spent a bit more money for a cool-mist humidifier that actually kept my bedroom humidified overnight and didn't require extra care. But if you're using it for a small room and don't mind the frequent cleaning, it might be a good value for the money.

(More customer reviews)After reading several reviews of humidifiers that all gave mixed opinions I ignored all of them and picked up this humidifier at a local drug store for $32. This humidifier is small, approximately 11"Wx6"Dx13"H, making it suitable to put on the floor or on a counter. It consists of two main parts, a white plastic base and a clear blue plastic container. The base has two sliding switches. One turns the unit on/off and the other adjusts the amount of water vapor being released in to the air. The blue container sits on top of the base and has a handle on top and a round screw-on part on the bottom to fill the container. It also comes with a filter that goes in the base. There is a round piece on top of the container that turns to adjust and direct the stream of water vapor. Pros: 1. In my opinion it is quiet, much quieter than the Bemis wicking humidifier I previously had. The sound level is comparable to a table top fan. It does make water noises though which I find soothing but could be an annoyance. 2. It runs for a long time without refilling. On the lowest setting 1 container full of water will last a couple days of continous run time. On the highest setting, it needs to be refilled once a day. 3. It has no wick, which would start to smell in the old humidifier I had. 4. No chemicals need to be added to keep scum from growing in it. 5. You can see the water vapor being released in to the air (so you know its working). 6. See through container. You don't have to open anything to see how much water is left. 7. Container fits in kitchen sink to be refilled. 8. Relatively easy to clean. Cons: 1. It has no automatic shut off when the water runs out or when the air has reached the desired humidity. 2. When the container is picked up to be refilled it drips so you need a towel with you. When the unit is running, the water empties out of the container into the base where it is turned into water vapor. So when you remove the container the base is still full of water. 3. It needs to be cleaned regularly, once a week at least unless you don't mind the scum that grows on it. The base has corners that you need a Q-tip to clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with a damp cloth and a bleach and water solution and then rinsed well. We have extremely soft water so I don't know how long the filter that comes with the humidifier will last or how well it works in places with hard water. I would recommend this humidifier.
