Evaporative Humidifier Stainless Steel 15 Gallon Review

In my quest to replace the fake woodgrain 1970s-vintage Sears whole house humidifier that we've used for years, I first purchased an EssickAir (Bemis) TD6-710. The unit had all the looks, size, and features we wanted - a really slick machine. The only problem was that it was severely design-flawed.
[...]
There is nothing on the market as sleek-looking as that unit. It's sad that it is so flawed. The hardware store was gracious to take it back used and unboxed, and they decided to return all 3 units they still had back to the manufacturer.

Wal-Mart had the Boston Innovative Products EH-01-342 for $109, so we picked one up. This unit doesn't have the electronic humidity meters, out-of-water indicator, or super-easy refill of the EssickAir, but it is solidly built and so far does not overflow the water basin like the EssickAir. There are 2 two-gallon containers in it for water. Each has a handle for ease of carrying. Getting them out involves removal of a pop-out screen in the back of the unit, so you don't have the convenience of frontfill. The 3-speed evaporator fan in typically noisy, even on the lowest setting. Cold air blows out the front of the unit, making placement of it in the room a concern of comfort. The unit is taller but narrower that those boxy larger units, making it a little less invasive. Time will tell how it fits into our home. I may update this in a few weeks with further experience.

2-1-07 Update
After using this machine for a little while, one thing I cannot understand. Why doesn't it have an out-of-water indicator? It seems crazy that you have to attune your ear to the mild grating noise that indicates a water refill is necessary. Why put the water pump through all that excessive wear? Another thing that can be annoying is the short cycle time. I don't know how the humidity sensor is set up, but the unit turns on for a few minutes, turns off for a few minutes, turns on for a few minutes... why not design a delay in the timing so that it wouldn't be so jarring with all this cycling? I'm thinking now that a 3-star rating is more appropriate, although it still beats most of the competition that I have tried.

Honeywell HCM6013 Cool Mist Air Humidifier Review

Honeywell HCM6013 Cool Mist Air Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought the Honeywell HCM-6013i cool mist humidifier to replace a GermGuardin humidifier that stopped working after 90 days of use. So far, this unit is performing quite well.

According to the specification in the owner's manual, this unit is capable of outputting 11 gallons per day (I'm assuming per 24 hours). Do not confuse this with the unit's water holding capacity. In two separate tanks, the humidifier holds about a total of 3.5 gallons of water. And you will not notice any humidifying mist as you might with other types of humidifier. This humidifier works by the same principle as a swamp cooler.

I usually have the fan speed on low and the humidity level set on auto at 35%. At these settings, I have to fill the water tanks every one and a half day or so. The HCM-6013i built-in hygrometer (humidity sensor) is no where near accurate. Although I have the unit set on 35%, actual humidity measured by a separate and more accurate hygrometer, measures 45%. I recommend buying a separate hygrometer so that you can find the right humidity level. If you're not as picky as I am, you can always go by feel and adjust the humidity control up or down until you find your comfort level, to where the unit turn on or off based on the setting.

This unit fits together from essentially four pieces; the base, the motor housing, and the two water tanks. The pieces do not exactly fit together that well. The design of this unit reminds me of something that was made from the former USSR. It's clunky...but it works. It has no problem keeping up the desired humidity level when the AC is on and the outside relative humidity is 10% - 15%. It draws water from one of the two tanks at a time. When either one of the water tank is drained the unit makes a buzzing noise from the empty lighter tank. It's a little annoying, but a little tab or jolt usually resolves this buzzing noise.

I recommend buying a spare HC-14 replacement filter for this unit. I already notice that within a day if not hours of use the water-wicking filter mentioned was turning a little brown on the top. I don't know if the browning of the filter is due to using tap water for the humidifier or the air in my condo is that dirty. I hope it's the former rather than the latter.

The manual states that using tap water is OK because the water-wicking filter will absorb and retain the minerals in tap water, while the Protec water cleaning cartridge will help fight bacteria and other microbes in the water.

As mentioned above. This humidifier works about the same way as a swamp cooler. In a dry and warm environment, this humidifier does put out a noticeably cool breeze.

This product also boasts of having an "Air Washing Technology", and an independently controlled air ionizer. I can't comment too much about these features because I can't attest to how well they work. Again some swamp coolers can also claim of being able to wash the air as they cool...right? My gut feeling tells me that these features are a bit gimmicky. Does it really "clean" the air in my condo? Maybe. Does the air in my condo really need cleaning? Sometimes.

Vornado HU1-0022-06 Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

Vornado HU1-0022-06 Ultrasonic Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live in Chicago where the winters get very cold and very dry.I finally decided to do something about it a year ago and bought a humidifier.I went through a series of 5 humidifiers before I finally came across the Vornado Ultrasonic, which has been the best by far.

I started with a cheap Holmes humidifier that basically boils water and creates steam. The problem is that the heating element gets caked with residue and needs to be cleaned just about every other day and it's very difficult to clean. It also tends to give off a rather bad odor.

After returning the holmes, I purchased a Vornado evaporative humidifier. What I've found is that evaporative humidifiers simply don't create enough moisture. The first Vornado was a bust.

My next attempt was a Sharper Image Ultrasonic humidifier, which is very simple to use, easy to clean and provides a good deal of moisture.Unfortunately, much of the moisture simply falls to the ground right around the machine.I wasn't 100% sold.

I returned the Sharper Image unit to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and found two typically expensive ultrasonic humidifiers on sale for half off.One was the Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic Humidifier http://www.amazon.com/Air-O-Swiss-32838-Ultrasonic-Humidifier/dp/B000J4I4RI/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1262363031&sr=1-7The other was the Vornado.I decided to get them both with the intention of returning the one that I did not like as much. The Air-O-Swiss is a very elegant looking machine with lots of controls and settings. At the top, it has a plastic piece which lets you control the direction the moisture flows (it can go two directions at once).I found that it had the same problem as the Sharper Image unit, but I placed it on a 2' plant stand, directed the moisture to either side and that seemed to keep the moisture from settling on the floor.

The Vornado Unit's settings were slightly more complicated for me to figure out, but we're talking the difference between 2 minutes and 5 minutes here. The Vornado uses a fan to push the moisture further up so that it evaporates in the air BEFORE it hits the ground.PERFECT!I don't have to put it on a stand or worry that I'll find water seaping into my hardwood floors.Where the Air-O-Swiss is super quiet, the Vornado has a fan (that pushes the moisture up) and thus makes a bit more noise.I personally don't find the noise distracting at all and neither does my wife.Noise aside, it is the fan that really makes this the perfect humidifier because this is the ONLY humidifier of the many I tested that actually seems to get more moisture into the air than on the ground.I wound up getting two Vornado Ultrasonic Humidifiers for my 1800 square foot condo and have noticed a substantial improvement.I highly recommend this product.

One last thing... both the Vornado and the Air-O-Swiss have filters, which is nice because you want to be filling your home with clean moisture.

Vornado MD1-0002 Humidifier Wicks Review

Vornado MD1-0002 Humidifier Wicks
Average Reviews:

These humidifier filters are as cheap as they get and lasts forever! We live in the Southwestern desert and our family members all have naturally dry skin so our humidifiers practically run year around (one in each bedroom, 365 nights a year).I only need to replace these filters about twice a year because, every month, I soak them in vinegar to remove the hard water deposits. This keeps the filters supple and able to absorb/output more moisture into the air.Don't buy the cheap "fakes" on eBay; get the original Vornado filters; they'll last a whole lot longer than the "fakes".Love the Vornado humidifiers too -- easiest to use and clean!

Best Air RPS #3BT-6 32OZ Humidifier Bacteriostatic Water Treatment Review

Best Air RPS #3BT-6 32OZ Humidifier Bacteriostatic Water Treatment
Average Reviews:

I have a number of Vornado humidifiers in my home. With two toddler twin daughters, keeping the air as free of bacteria is important to me.This product seems to be doing a very good job.I have noticed an improvement in the wicks that draw up the water: no signs of bacterial aging. While I am not a biologist, nor have run any scientific tests, it seems to work with no side effects.

The supplier promptly shipped the water treatment as described. There was no communications, as none was necesary. The purchase just went through as it should, with no hitches.

I will buy this product again.
