(More customer reviews)We bought the Honeywell HCM-6013i cool mist humidifier to replace a GermGuardin humidifier that stopped working after 90 days of use. So far, this unit is performing quite well.

According to the specification in the owner's manual, this unit is capable of outputting 11 gallons per day (I'm assuming per 24 hours). Do not confuse this with the unit's water holding capacity. In two separate tanks, the humidifier holds about a total of 3.5 gallons of water. And you will not notice any humidifying mist as you might with other types of humidifier. This humidifier works by the same principle as a swamp cooler.

I usually have the fan speed on low and the humidity level set on auto at 35%. At these settings, I have to fill the water tanks every one and a half day or so. The HCM-6013i built-in hygrometer (humidity sensor) is no where near accurate. Although I have the unit set on 35%, actual humidity measured by a separate and more accurate hygrometer, measures 45%. I recommend buying a separate hygrometer so that you can find the right humidity level. If you're not as picky as I am, you can always go by feel and adjust the humidity control up or down until you find your comfort level, to where the unit turn on or off based on the setting.

This unit fits together from essentially four pieces; the base, the motor housing, and the two water tanks. The pieces do not exactly fit together that well. The design of this unit reminds me of something that was made from the former USSR. It's clunky...but it works. It has no problem keeping up the desired humidity level when the AC is on and the outside relative humidity is 10% - 15%. It draws water from one of the two tanks at a time. When either one of the water tank is drained the unit makes a buzzing noise from the empty lighter tank. It's a little annoying, but a little tab or jolt usually resolves this buzzing noise.

I recommend buying a spare HC-14 replacement filter for this unit. I already notice that within a day if not hours of use the water-wicking filter mentioned was turning a little brown on the top. I don't know if the browning of the filter is due to using tap water for the humidifier or the air in my condo is that dirty. I hope it's the former rather than the latter.

The manual states that using tap water is OK because the water-wicking filter will absorb and retain the minerals in tap water, while the Protec water cleaning cartridge will help fight bacteria and other microbes in the water.

As mentioned above. This humidifier works about the same way as a swamp cooler. In a dry and warm environment, this humidifier does put out a noticeably cool breeze.

This product also boasts of having an "Air Washing Technology", and an independently controlled air ionizer. I can't comment too much about these features because I can't attest to how well they work. Again some swamp coolers can also claim of being able to wash the air as they cool...right? My gut feeling tells me that these features are a bit gimmicky. Does it really "clean" the air in my condo? Maybe. Does the air in my condo really need cleaning? Sometimes.

(More customer reviews)The installation on this product was pretty straight forward.The only problem I find is when the water solonoid is turned on there is no "flow" control over the water going in to the humidifier media and there is a LOT of wasted water.After using this a month I found it DOUBLED my water bill because of all the wasted water down the drain.I have since disconnected this humidifer because I don't need to spend that type of money going down the drain.It would be nice if there was some type of float device that would fill up and the meter the water in to the media and be used instead of pouring water down the drain.

(More customer reviews)Up here in the deep north it is essential to have humidifier if you have musical instruments, or anything made out of nice wood.I have tried several different options, and evaporative humidifiers are the best.This one has enough nice features to warrent an excellent rating.The main great feature is that it is easy to add water to the system.The tanks remove easily, and can be filled from the kitchen sink (they are too tall for filling in a bathroom sink).In the dead of winter expect to fill it daily, but fortunately this is big enough to only need filling once per day.Other nice features include a fan speed control (pump humidity in fast because you were gone all weekend and its dry), or quiet.At low speed settings you barely know its on.I also like the optional air cleaning evaporator.It apparently slows down air flow, but that seems trivial since the fan can simply be turned up.

Essick Air 821-000 Digital Control Evaporative Console Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)I had been searching for a humidifier (or humidifiers) for my 1900 SF house, and was excited when I came across this model, as it was compact and not ugly like the console humidifiers I have seen.Floor space in my house is somewhat limited, so I liked the fact that its upright design would allow flexibility in placement.Also, I'd had good luck with Bemis in the past (had two H12 console units, in black, which for some reason Bemis no longer offers), so I thought I'd give this a try.My intent was to order a second one if it worked well, since the output ratings on humidifiers are generally quite overstated and I knew I would need more capacity.

What a disappointment!The unit only has two speeds, and the high speed is LOUD.Now, I know that in order to put a lot of moisture in the air youhave to have a pretty good fan blower, but this was ridiculous. Much louder than the H12 I'd had before. Also, the humidity setting only scrolls up, so you have to cycle all the way through to get back to the lowest setting.I guess that's really more of a minor annoyance, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

But the real problem was that the unit just plain didn't add moisture to the air.We left it running all night, and barely any water had evaporated by the next morning. In looking at the unit further, there is a major design flaw- unlike most humidifiers, which draw air into the unit through the wick (where it then picks up moisture), in this model the air is drawn in near the top, and also expelled at the top, while the wick is lower in the unit, so the majority of air just bypasses the wick.

I am returning this unit, and will have to bite the bullet and purchase another H12 console unit. I already own a Honeywell HCM-300T, but it's only rated 3 gallons per day and used in my bedroom at night.I am waiting for it to "die" because I don't like the fact that the cold air blows out of the BOTTOM of the unit, making an unpleasant draft on the floor.I did consider the Honeywell 6011i but don't like the fact that it has two water bottles (less convenient), and also the air blows out the side rather than the top.Bemis will get my business after all, but I can't believe they produced an inferior model like this.

Essick Air H12-400 3-Speed Evaporative Console Humidifier, Oak Burl Review

(More customer reviews)I like the design and operation of this humidifier. In fact, I have two of them. Ace Hardware gave me extra-fast delivery -- no complaints with Ace. The machines humidify very efficiently, put out a lot of moisture, and (unlike many others) are reasonably easy to maintain. Normally it will run fine on low or medium fan settings. Forget about the high fan speed; it sounds like a helicopter taking off.

The first one I bought worked fine some of the time, but generally would not start up again after the humidistat controller automatically shut it off. Through much trial and error, I figured out that you have to center the wick precisely on its hanger rail that runs along the inside of the water chamber so the float aligns correctly. Great -- problem solved, although poorly explained in the brief instruction sheet.

Then, at the beginning of the second winter dry season here on the high plains, the motor began to squeal, seize, and stop, especially at low speeds. On high, it would slowly start and then scream for a while and finally run -- except it practically shook the unit apart and made it dance along the floor. After a day or so, it would no longer start at all. Clearly the bearings in the motor were shot.

I was about to junk it, when I thought to check the warranty. Sure enough, the warranty ran for a year. I had eight days left!!

I contacted Essick Air via email and a very nice customer service rep put me onto the person in charge of the warranty work. This second person sent form emails that were curt and blunt, but, in fairness, did address my problem. Getting the return papers could not be done via email, and took about two weeks to arrive by snail mail.

Alas, I would have to return the fan power head (they call it the "chassis") to them for repair. This, even though an authorized repair shop here in Denver is less than a half-mile from my condo.

I bought a large shipping box, packed the unit well, and lugged it on my back five blocks to UPS. $33.00 to send it to the factory (in Georgia, I think?), but they promised to reimburse me (and did).

About a month later, with no communication, the chassis arrives back here in my original packing, repaired with a new motor. However, I open the carton, take out the chassis, and it falls apart in my hands! Yup, it's repaired, but not screwed back together. The screws are lying loose in the bottom of the box and all four screw holes are stripped. The electronics have fallen out and are dangling from their wires.

The prospect of sending it back yet again is now so daunting that I take it into my little work closet and actually reassemble it myself, more or less, and screw it together with larger screws. It was one of those two-hour deals where you wish you were four-handed with long, narrow, double-jointed fingers. I have no idea if all the inside pieces are back in their actual slots or not, but it seems to work OK for now. Pray it does not catch on fire some day.

I contacted Essick Air's customer service rep just to tell them about the poor repair and got a very passionate apology and a promise to take it up with higher-ups and get back to me. I did not ask for it, but thought I might actually get a new "chassis" out of the deal. I'm not really comfortable with my backyard repair job.

Of course, after that I heard nothing ever again. The higher ups had obviously ducked the problem.

Maybe it's the fact that I am a retired marketing executive and know better myself, but it amazes me that a national company with a famous brand name would not treat me a little better when fulfilling the terms of a warranty. The customer service person could not have been nicer, but after that the treatment was suspicious, curt, abrupt, and, well, unsophisticated.

The documents I was sent were full of warnings and self-protective disclaimers, but showed little concern for my broken product or my work returning it: if they found that I did not really have a warranty claim, I would have to pay for shipping both ways ($33.00 out, and, were I so foolish to want a broken fan unit, another $33.00 back). Or I could pay for repairs in advance.

All this "attitude" and they had not even looked at my problem yet. The unit as I described it to them was pretty clearly broken, it was obviously a burnt out motor bearing, it must have happened more than once. I felt strongly that they were trying to get me to give up on the warranty. The whole approach implied that I was nuts for even bothering them and probably trying to cheat them. All this for a $10 motor!

From my point of view, of course, it's about a $150 item that ought to last longer than a year. Much longer.

Oh, yeah, that second one I bought? It arrived, brand new, with a squeak in the fan that even I can hear -- and I'm partly deaf. Not quite loud enough to send back though, so we use it on a lower floor. Could never use it in the bedroom. Other than the squeak, it works great. Will it last a year? Stay tuned!

(More customer reviews)My Honeywell 6gal @ day is in its 3rd season of operation. No issues at this time. I was concerned about being on well water that is slightly low ph ( 6.8 ). I have the flush time set for 20hrs. No issues with mine other than it is allways in operation. I question Honeywell selection guide. Understanding differant variables, I still felt that the 6 gal a day was large enough, humidity is staying 40% to 50% dependant on conditions. I bought this in part due to the 5 year warranty.

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Product was relatively easy to install but I downloaded better instructions from an internet website than were included with the product. Also, my furnace had a 24v tap so the electrical hookup was easy.
Some notes:
1) I did not buy the installation kit because I did not need the sail switch (because of the 24v tap) and most of the cost of the kit is for this switch. It is much cheaper to buy only the pieces you need - they are carried at most hardware & building supply stores. Plan on spending about $30 on parts.
2) The template for cutting the humidifier hole into the duct is the instruction sheet. If I had not read this on another review, I would not have found it. Shame on Honeywell for not telling you this in the instructions!
3) Use the saddle valve to regulate the water flow to the unit, otherwise you will waste a lot of water. This was the only thing I disliked about it but I think this is the case with all new designs.
4) Instructions tell you that you can install the unit on either the supply (warm air) or return (cold air) duct. But most reviews I read from professionals recommend mounting the humidifier on the cold air return duct in case you have a water leak - will not ruin any of the furnace electronics or motor.
Overall I'm satisfied with this unit - will likely install one in both my kids houses.

(More customer reviews)I was fed up with constantly filling portable humidifiers and cleaning up all the mineral deposits so I bought this.Install was straighforward but time consuming.Bottom line: this will easily humidify a large house and the only maintenance is changing the filter each year.The filter traps all the minerals or they wash down the drain and there is virtually no cleanup.So much nicer than scrubbing caked on deposits with vinegar in my portable unit.Be prepared for a bigger water bill.When running it wastes a lot of water, but I figured I offset the higher water bill with a smaller heating bill because you feel warmer with more humidity and we were able to reduce the inside temp 2 degrees.

Essick Air 696-400 Variable Speed Whole House Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)The good news is, it humidifies. That's what I bought it for and that's what it does. The level of humidity is adjustable, allowing the unit to automatically cycle on and off as needed. And yes, you can adjust the fan speed, but getting it anywhere near the upper range makes it sound like a B29 taking off. IT'S LOUD! I leave it on med-low and it's not bad at all.

It has two plastic 2.6 gallon water bottles and at the med-low fan speed I use, I go through about 1 bottle per day. It keeps the rooms close to it quite comfortable, but rooms farther away don't get much. Your mileage will vary depending on humidifier location, floor plan, and normal air circulation.

As far as being built "sturdy" (as one reviewer pointed out), I have to disagree. The entire housing is made of plastic. Without the water bottles in it, it's so light that on a hard floor it easily rolls away with the lightest bump. Unless you are on carpet, I recommend NOT installing the castors that come with it. The weakest part of the whole unit is the stupid lid. It's constantly falling off it's hinges when I'm replacing the water bottles. It's just poorly designed.

I highly recommend buying the optional "air cleaner filter" (model #1051) that fits on the back. It helps clear your house of dust and pollen and also makes your internal wick last longer. For allergy sufferers, this is an absolute MUST.

Speaking of making wicks last longer, it wasn't until I read the owner's manual that I found out soft water is NOT recommended as it's supposedly not good for the wick. Oh well. The only NON-softened water I have is my outdoor hose and there's NO WAY I'm going out there every morning in the snow to fill my humidifier bottles!

All in all, I give it a 5 in performance, 4 in construction, and a 2 in convenience. (Hey, refilling and lugging 22 lbs of water every morning gets old!) Since performance is really what we want out of it, it gets an overall score of 4 stars from me.

BTW, use about 1/2 as much of the anti-bacterial additive as the bottle recommends and it does just fine.

Essick Air ED11 800 Euro Console-Style Humidifier, White Review

(More customer reviews)Does not work as advertised. When set at our preferred 40% humidity, the humidistat room reading reads 45% and never varies.

When the preferred humidity level was set to 50% the fan will run until the humidity level reaches 55% and then shut off. But, after just A FEW SECONDS, the room humidity level reading drops to 47-49% and the fan comes on. Again, it will run for just a few seconds and repeat the above process continually, never staying on or off for more than a few seconds at a time. There is no way humidity can rise or fall that much in just a few seconds.

After calling the factory, they said it was defective and to bring it back to the store. A second unitwas ordered which ended up being no better than the first.

I ended up returning the second unit as well. Stay away from this particular humidifer. It's noisey and cheaply made.

Honeywell QuietCare Cool-Moisture Humidifier, 3-Gallon, HCM-630 Review

(More customer reviews)We bought this humidifier to replace one that was purchased about six years ago, also a Honeywell model.That model had a two gallon tank and would shut off if the water ran out.Compared to that, this newer model has a relatively TINY tank, at perhaps a gallon or so.Since the unit is rated at 3 gallons per day output, that would mean quit a bit of refilling on very dry days.On our old unit, the tank had a handle on the underside (where the fill cap is) so that when you filled it, you had something to hold on to.Not so with the new unit.And to make matters even more difficult, the bottom of this new tank is not flat, so you can't just set it under the faucet and expect it to stay there.

The most annoying thing though is the absence of an automatic shutoff and indicator light when the water level gets too low.Because the tank is in the back of the unit, it is hard to see the water level.This thing will run and run and run without water, drying out the filter so you have to take it out an re-soak it again.While stylistically nicer, this units functionality is a real step down from previous generations of their humidifiers.

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)I installed the HE360A onto a new Ruud 95%+ high-efficiency dual-stage heating and cooling system and I'm controlling the unit with a Ritetemp 6080 thermostat.The humidifier works beautifully, and based upon my research with heating and cooling specialists, this unit is optimally-designed to conserve power and to protect the heating and cooling system.Bypass units (that use a piece of ducting connecting the return and supply sides of the system) rob the heating system's efficiency and will push moist air through the system.Installing this unit on the supply side of the ductwork ensures that all of the humidified air will be moved into the home, not back into the system.While this design does use more water than some other units, the savings in power and the increased efficiency of the unit will minimize its financial impact.By the way, I attached the unit to a hot water supply, not cold, as this helps the moisture to be absorbed into the heated air.

The newer Honeywell humidifiers create steam to humidify the air.While this is probably optimal for humidification purposes and should minimize the amount of water used, the amount of electricity these systems use to create the steam will definitely impact your pocketbook.From a "green" perspective, I find that water is a cheaper and more renewable resource than electrical power.The old-fashioned drum humidifier units will save water, but use a holding tray of water to soak a pad that the air travels through.If not cleaned thoroughly and often, they develop mold and mildew and that will get circulated through your house... a very dangerous and unhealthy option.

Installing this unit did prove a bit of a challenge because of it's combination with the Ritetemp 6080 electronic thermostat, which includes a humidistat.Most online "experts" say that the HE360 units won't work with this kind of thermostat/humidistat because of incompatible electrical design of the two systems.However, I'm a firm believer that anything is possible with enough research and who doesn't like a challenge?To make this work, I purchased a small 24VAC SPDT relay from Grainger, part number 4A708 (about $15) and did NOT use the installation kit recommended for the humidifier or the humidistat that was provided with the unit.Since my air handler provides 24VAC to the thermostat and the thermostat interally provides settings to determine when the humidifier will run, I used the relay to control power to the 120VAC side of the system which acts as a switch to turn the entire humidifier on and off.To accomplish this, I installed a new electrical circuit and outlet to be used solely by the humidifer.I installed the relay inside an electrical box to control the power to this outlet.Using low voltage wiring I connected the relay to the "C"ommon contact on the air handler and to the "H"umidifier wire from the thermostat.I then used a wire nut to connect the two yellow wires on the HE360, which basically sets the unit "on" any time it has power.When the air handler is running in heat mode and the thermostat determines that humidification is required, the relay is powered and provides 120VAC power to the outlet and the humidifier is turned on.When the relay loses power, the 120VAC is turned off that the HE360 shuts off.The thermostat can be set to work two ways:to run the humidifier and the air handler's blower anytime when the humidistat says that humidity is required, or to run the humidifier only when the air handler is in heat mode and the blower is running and humidity is required.I could have directly wired this unit to the air handler's power, but I chose to use the outlet so that I could unplug the unit in an emergency or for service.

I strongly recommend this unit... I've tried several of whole house units over the last 20 years and this is the first that really works. I've already helped others to install these units on their HVAC systems and all of them work great, none have had any problems and all are amazed at the difference the humidifier makes in their homes.

Honeywell HCM-800 QuietCare PermaFilter Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)After years of replacing cool-mist filters, I wanted to try a humidifier with a so-called permanent filter. The noise is not really any more bothersome than other cool-mist humidifiers on the market. The problem with this product is the filter system. For the first month or so, I was able to keep the filter clean per the product instructions. But then, as with all cool mist humidifiers, the filter accumulates dust from the air intake and other mineral deposits. Unfortunately, it is absoultely impossible to clean the deposits and debris out of the interior wicking of the filter. The manufacturer's instructions say (in fact warn) only to clean the unit using vinegar...well, that method only works for some of the mineral deposits for the first 4 weeks or so. Plus, even with the vinegar method, you can't get the particles washed out of the interior of the filter! So after 3 months, the perma-filter doesn't retain sufficient moisture to effectively humidify the air. You are better off buying a regular cool-mist humidifier with a filter that can be replaced every few months. It will save you time, money and frustration. I have never written a review of any product before but this product is so poor that I felt compelled to do so at this time and warn others not to make the same mistake I made. This is truly one of the worst products I have ever purchased.

Emerson HDC-12 Replacement Moistair Wicking Humidifier Filter, 4-Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I have an Emerson console-type humidifier that is allegedly capable of putting 13 gallons of water into the air in a 24-hour period. It came with filters from the factory that seem to stand up to this claim.The factory filters are pleated paper, not these fibrous, spongy type that are commonly described as "OEM" replacements.

These honeycomb, fibrous filters work well for a couple of days and then start to lose their ability to draw water up into themselves.Within two weeks they are hard as a rock and no longer wick.This is my second season with these things.I go through an entire case of them (8 sets of 4) in 3 months. The original-style filters, while more expensive, would last me almost 2 months and put much more water into the air (10 gallons a day on the 'medium' fan setting).

It is now difficult to find the pleated, accordian type filters but they are the only ones that work. My advice is to try to find the originals.
