CHEMEX 10 Cup Classic Series Coffee Maker Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using a Chemex 10-cup coffee maker for over a year and half, and have never had such good coffee before in my life. I am constantly looking forward to my next pot of coffee!

There is a downside to this coffee maker: it is a more manual procedure than what you are used to, and it also takes a couple of pots to learn how to use this most efficiently. The first time I tried to use mine, I had ground my coffee way too finely and it just took forever! The big time consumers: you have to boil your water separately (you do have a water kettle right?) and then you have to gradually pour the boiled water through the Chemex. This means that while the coffee is brewing, you are pouring, or watching, or giving the filter area a bit of a stir.

Now the up side: you will never ever ever drink a better cup of coffee. I use filtered water, freshly ground home roasted beans, and this Chemex to produce the finest coffee I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. And this coffee is a pleasure! In fact, I've totally given up using cream and sugar because my coffee no longer has anything to hide.

Another up side: clean up means swishing the Chemex with warm water and tossing the water down the drain. You can also wash with a bottle brush but this is rarely necessary. A brief swish is really all it takes. Over time, it does start to acquire a smokey color, at which point I wash it in water mixed with a splash of bleachto get your Chemex looking factory new. Try that with your electric drip machine! Ha! That thing will NEVER look brand new!

Oh, here's a final upside: despite the fact that this Chemex brews the best coffee you'll ever drink, it costs less than just about anything. You are probably already spending more money than this every month at Starbucks!

The Chemex is just a type of glass carafe, so there are no heating elements to burn your coffee. Some people may not like this, but without the heated burner there is no risk of burning your coffee. I usually make enough coffee to fill the 10-cup Chemex. When ready, I just pour it into my thermos and a large mug and I have enough coffee for the whole day. And that includes enough to share; everyone at work knows the best coffee comes out of my thermos. The Flavia machines do not come close!

Go ahead and buy yourself one of these. If necessary, wake up 10 minutes earlier to make your coffee. Better yet, wake up 20 minutes earlier. And when your coffee is ready, instead of dumping it into a travel cup and bolting out the door, sit down and enjoy your first cup for the next 10 minutes. You deserve it!

The Keurig standard approach involves the purchase of K-Cups with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. The K-Cups make excellent coffee. So you say, why not get a reusable K-Cup. Good idea. But there are a few problems with the system Keurig wants you to use. First the reusable K-Cups cost $14 and up. If you want 10 of them, that is $140 just for the reusable cups. Second, the Keurig's resusable K-Cup does not produce as good of a cup of coffee as the K-Cup itself. The designs are different and the water flows out the sides of the filter rather than down through the coffee. Third, the design is big, bulky, and hard to store. If you already have a turnstile for K-Cups, you can not store these there. With this product you can.

The Kap allows you to recycle your K-Cups. Fill them with your favorite coffee or tea. And use them many times before they have to be thrown out for good. That lowers your cost for each cup of brew and also give you better brews each time.

Please note - & I cannot stress this enough - it ONLY works well in the Hamilton Beach BrewStation ***PLUS*** models.It will be loose in the basket, shift around, & be forever uncentered in the cheaper version of the Hamilton Beach BrewStation the next grade down (models 47224, 47114, 47214, 47221, 47111, & the like) - which has a totally different basket & housing design than the BrewStation Plus models.Oddly enough, one of the NON-Plus BrewStation models IT DOES NOT FIT is actually pictured on the box for this filter & it erroneously states "Fits All BrewStation Coffeemakers" - but it *will NOT fit well at all* in that model, as people have already pointed out in disgust below, & rightly so.

I bought a permanent filter locally made by Mr. Coffee, & it fit the basket circumferance wise - but it stood too high to close the lid to the Hamilton Beach BrewStation PLUS.And where I live, it's the only permanent filter sold in town.So I returned it, & I ordered this model instead.And Wha-Laaa!!!The Hamilton Beach Permanent Filter 80675 works just as nice as a paper filter in the BrewStation PLUS.Maybe nicer, as the water seems to drain better.No wild overflows, & no messy coffee coated water distributer left in the wake of the brewing cycle.Just nice coffee.

It's too bad Hamilton Beach flubbed & pictured the wrong BrewStation model on the box to go with this filter - instead of one of the BrewStation PLUS models that it actually does fit.I'm not surprised to hear people who have the NON-Plus BrewStations are ticked.This filter, like the Mr. Coffee Permanent Filter, will not stay centered in the basket & will shift around loosely in a NON-Plus regular BrewStation basket by about a half inch.My guess is the water at times would completely miss this basket in these NON-Plus models & flow directly into the coffee tank.And I can see where it may perhaps even overflow in other brands that require a higher standing basket, like the Mr. Coffee Filter.This filter fits the Brewstation PLUS basket circumferance much more closely than it will fit in the regular (& more cheaply made) Hamilton Beach BrewStation.It fits so naturally in my BrewStation PLUS, & it's just become part of the appliance.The only giveaway that it's really an accessory is that it's brown, instead of black like the coffee machine.

If you have a Hamilton Beach BrewStation PLUS (& it has to be the PLUS version of the Brewstation, or you will be really unhappy with its performance & your brew) - I recommend giving this filter a shot.

I hope my "field work" helps people to avoid buying bad fitting filters, to leave soggy, ripping, spilling, dripping paper filters in the past where they belong, & to finally get their coffee. :)

It replaces a permanent filter from Mr Coffee that had a plastic bottom with the mesh only on the sides.

The Medelco filter has mesh on the bottom as well as the sides, thus the water runs through the filter too fast resulting in weak coffee.

The only suggestion from Medelco's help line was to use more coffee!

Believe it or not, it is the ubiquitous8-12 cup basket coffee filters that are used by everyone who has a drip coffee maker. There is no hole so you simply center the basket filter on the percolator tube andpush the filter down over the tube with your thumb and fingers close to tube to make sure that the puncture is not much larger than the size of the tube. You will find that even if you tear it a little larger than the tubewhen you press the filter down over it there will be no problem with coffee grinds getting through.

After you do this you will have a nice paper basket filter inside you electric drip coffee maker that works better than the small round disc filters that they sell for these and save money on these expensive wrap filters.

One additional tip about cleaning electric percolators. I fill the pot with 12 cups of water and then put one of the Cascade w/ Dawn dishwasher packets in the basket.

I then put it together as if I was making coffee and let it go for a cycle. When the light goes on after the brew cycle I let the hot dishwasher solution sit for a while. (More customer reviews)I purchased one of these and used it for over three years before the dishwasher bounced it around one-too-many times and split the filter media in several places. Still, over three years, I saved a little money over paper filters and kept a lot of paper out of the waste stream.

SwissGold is THE premier maker of non-disposable products. The mesh is just the right size for keeping your morning joe from getting "muddied" yet allows more of the true aromas and tastes to filter through. A paper filter traps a lot of these and prevents the true "coffee" from presenting itself. I use fresh roasted beans, ground coarse, from all over the world and if I forget to clean my gold filter and resort to using a paper one, there is a distinct taste difference. If you find yourself in this position, use a brown or unbleached paper filter, unless you want chlorine-tasting brew.

There is no doubt that the mesh in this product is somewhat fragile. To prevent damage, just wash it by hand or use some liquid dish soap and an old used toothbrush, which works great. I have a special place in my dishwasher when it needs a good cleaning but I rinse it out after with good, clean hot water and let it air dry. If you use this product AND pick the proper size, you will not be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)The previous reviewer is correct about the "sediment" from the filter.Typically gold filters allow the oils and other properties of the ground bean to pass though, instead of being stuck in the paper filter.This gives a darker richer coffee.It also means you have a small "shot" of more dense coffee at the end of your cup.You can either drink it or not, some people really like the taste of the gold filter, others are used to the paper and don't like it at all.I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Medelco #4 Cone Permanent Coffee Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Medelco #4 cone permanent coffee filter as a substitute for a Braun UGSF4 filter.Unfortunately, it's not a really good substitute.Although the Medelco coffee filter will fit in a Braun coffee maker, it's not as tall and tapered as the Braun UGSF4.As a result, it doesn't concentrate the coffee as much when it is moving through the filter so you have to substantially increase the amount of ground coffee that you are using for the same strength of coffee.So while the Medelco is initially cheaper than the corresponding Braun filter, one would end up spending much more money in the long run because you would use more ground coffee.My advice is to search the net (including e-bay) to find a genuine Braun gold filter...even though it will likely be more expensive than the Medelco filter, you'll be much happier in the long run.

Cuisinart GTF Gold Tone Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this filter with my Grind-n-Brew for 2 years. I put it in the dishwasher at least twice and have never had any problems with it. I have no idea what these other reviewers are doing wrong, but I love this filter. I never have grounds in my coffee. There is always a little darker/thicker coffee in the bottom of a good cup of coffee!

As for price, $20 is NOT the actual price for this filter. $10 is the "real" price, so you are not getting a deal on Amazon especially when you add shipping (unless you are getting free shipping). I have seen the same $10 filter at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Ace Hardware, and Publix.

Overall, if you enjoy a good cup of coffee and do not want to put the chemicals added to paper filters in your body, buy this coffee filter!

Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter Review

(More customer reviews)Being frugal (all right, cheap) by nature, I held off on buying a single-serve coffeemaker until I could find one I liked that offered a reusable filter. When Keurig came out with the B-40 Elite, a handsome, reasonably priced unit, and announced that it would be releasing its "My K-Cup" reusable filter for separate sale early in 2006, I was primed. As soon as I saw this product on Keurig's website, I was ready to buy my new coffeemaker from Amazon.com and the filter from Keurig's web site. My only wish was that Amazon.com would stock the reusable filter so buyers could purchase the coffeemaker and filter in one fell swoop, and here my wish is about to come to pass!

I have had my Keurig B-40 Elite for about a month now, and I've had great success with it. Bear in mind that if you're using the reusable filter, you must first remove the black plastic K-Cup holder from the unit's filter assembly (instructions on how to do this are included with "My K-Cup"; the black piece in the coffeemaker's filter basket doesn't act like it's supposed to come out, but it is, and it does).

Also, I've read elsewhere that some people don't like having to remove the reusable filter and clean it out after every use. However, I've found it to be a relatively simple affair: the reusable filter doesn't drip when you remove it, and takes about 30 seconds to rinse out after each use. You can use it again right away to brew successive cups.

One caveat is that the output splashes a bit when using the My K-Cup filter, so I always have a damp paper towel at the ready when I brew a cup. That having been said, I'm really happy to be using my own coffee and saving lots of money in the process. Those who are, like me, loathe to shell out 55 cents a cup for K-Cups will probably really like the new My K-Cup.
