(More customer reviews)I do not understand what has happened in the coffee maker industry.It seems as if every coffee appliance I buy fails.This one is no exception.I bought this one only because most of the reviews praised it.Now I am sure that the reviews are phony and must be posted by the manufacturer.There is no control over the time of percolation which for whatever reason has been designed to be too short.The coffee comes out weak especially if you try to make less than 12 cups, the water just doesn't make it through the strainer for less cups???The manual suggests using 20 spoons for 12 cups of strong coffee.At this rate I will essentially be using double the coffee grinds to make the same amount of coffee as I did with a much older Faberware I had and the coffee is still weak.The new faberwares are just as bad as everything else manufactured these days.The reviews and the item description also touts that this coffee percolator has a glass knob.This is an outright lie, it is plastic!!!!I was initially pleased with the design although I feel it is made with a lighter guage metal than it should be.I would gladly pay double for this product if it worked.Don't buy it, it is another coffee maker dud!!!!!

(More customer reviews)I love perculator coffee makers because you get HOT coffee. I had a different brand that had some poorly designed features. What I really like about this West Bend pot is the water level indicator, (although it starts at 8 cups). The only wierd problem is that every 10 min. or so it momentarily starts re-perking, to keep the coffee warm. If you don't remove the coffee ground holder it will send the hot water back through the grounds.

(More customer reviews)First of all, the reason we bought this is because, in general, percolators make great tasting coffee.They can turn even the worst quality beans into a good cup of coffee.Initially, the Presto lived up to our expectations.And after doing the following, it is once again making great cups of coffee.

Tip #1 - Grind your coffee using the appropriate setting.

After some usage, we would at times get a mouthful of grinds.We realized it was important to use the percolator setting on the coffee grinder at the supermarket.Since then, an occasional coffee grind finds its way into our cup.

Tip #2 - Clean the filter basket with a brush.

Despite cleaning the pot before each usage, the coffee was gradually getting weaker each day. We then realized that the holes in the bottom of the filter basket were clogged.We could not unclog them using a sponge so I started poking each one individually with a toothpick before deciding there was no way we would have the time or patience to do it every day.So, we tried a brush with plastic bristles and, within seconds, the basket was completely unclogged.So, we bought a small brush with a long handle and use it to clean the filter basket and the bottom of the pot.

(More customer reviews)Hi all~Please read the latest November 15, 2010 update below my initial review.ORIGINAL REVIEW-- Just wanted to give a quick counter balance to the sole review here.

This is our third 30+ cup urn purchased in the past 3 years or so. We received our coffee maker within 2 days of ordering using Amazon Prime.

The Maxi-Matic itself appears very attractive. We purchased it based on the insulating factor included in its design. We primarily use our coffee makers as hot water units for tea and french press. They run 24 hours a day under frequent use. We do not plan to use it as a coffee percolator.

Our household was happy to see the unit heats water to a higher temperature than many coffee makers and so far it seems to maintain the hot temp under its warming cycle. It is plenty hot enough to steep tea and coffee in our presses.

We did not find the machine to be noisy at all. In fact I think it is quieter than the Continental Electrics and West Bend brands we had previously.

I should also mention we can actually keep another 8-10 cups of water in the tank when not using the coffee pan.

We only buy stainless steel now after reading articles that suggest aluminum coffee makers leech more minerals and/or side-products that may be harmful to health.

I cannot speak to the previous reviewer's complaint about the percolating stem. To me it looks the same as most I've seen.

We purchased directly from Amazon so we are reassured that our 30 day return guarantee will give us sufficient time to see if there are any kinks.I'll report back if we find any serious ones.

UPDATE November 15, 2010-- Spigot broke off our 2nd urn. Sadly, I have to change my rating now from 3 stars to 1 star and ask that you DO NOT buy this product.

UPDATE September 5, 2010-- Our 2nd urn is still working. The handle seems to be holding up a little better than our last one, however we've noticed this urn doesn't keep the water as hot as our previous one which is a little disappointing. Today I'm feeling this is at 3 stars over the long term..

UPDATE May 10, 2010-- Sadly, our spigot handle broke off. It is clearly a weakness for this unit. Actually, a couple of months ago, half of the handle portion broke off, but we could still manage to use it without too much trouble. A few days ago the rest of the spigot handle broke vertically in half, separating & falling off, rendering the urn unusable. We've had it just about 5-6 months.

The urn heats so well though compared to the 2 or 3 others we've had- perfectly for a large hot water service pot for tea station, that we are ordering another. Figured the cost for mailing the unit back under warranty probably is not worthwhile. May do it later to have a back up.

We will reinforce the spigot on the new pot.

Down to 2 stars from 4.

(More customer reviews)This urn is supremely functional, with no bells and whistles.It advertises brewing times of 45 seconds per cup, but I've found that it's closer to the minute per cup advertised by other models: you'll buy back very little setup time with this model (heating 2 gallons of water took 35 minutes for example).Plus, like all other coffee urns, this one sings its moany little song while brewing, so if there's a chance it might be a distraction, you'll need to plug it in ahead of time so it's done brewing by the time the main event occurs, or you'll need to brew in another room and move it to the buffet table once it's hot.The one-handed dispensing works fine if the cup being dispensed into is solid, like a coffee mug, but common sense is confirmed that paper cups are not sturdy enough to depress the button without collapsing. In order to dispense one-handed with a paper cup, you have to push the button with your knuckles, which puts your fingers in the path of potentially hot liquids.Finally, and this is something that there's no way to know before reading the owner's manual, there's a little strainer right above where the liquid comes out.The owner's manual warns not to tip the urn while dispensing in order to prevent clogging of this strainer with coffee grounds.That's all well and good, except that due to the placement of the dispensing nozzle, the coffee becomes inaccessible when the level goes below about 10 cups--that's 1/4 of the total brew for a full pot!!It's this waste factor that resulted in the 4 stars instead of 5.For its price, it's a tidy little machine--the nozzle is particularly good at preventing drips.However, I'd rather clean up dribble from a lower-placed nozzle than have to find a way to decant 10 cups of coffee.

(More customer reviews)We have a large (extended) family living in one household and we go through 4-5 pots of coffee in a day.This urn is an inexpensive way for us to meet the demands of all the coffee drinkers here.And everyone likes the coffee it makes.The only thing I miss that I have on the drip machine is the timer (we have a couple of very early risers) and easy on/off.We attached ours to a timer so that it will start brewing early enough.One other thing - not a complaint, but a note about how it works, since it is a percolater, it takes longer to brew.Expect about 20 minutes for a full pot.

We use this coffee urn every day.If we wear it out, I will purchase another one just like it as it is so reasonably priced!

West Bend 58002 12-42 Cup Automatic Party Perk Coffee Urn Review

(More customer reviews)I am pretty particular about coffee.I like to gind my own beans and have never used a perc coffee pot in the past.But we were having a huge family gathering and I needed a lot of coffee.

I ordered this Party Perk machine and when it came in I almost returned it because it seemed so flimsy, but I figured I'd give it a chance.

I'm glad I did.All the information I read on the Internet about coffee said that perc'd coffee is not very good because the water is boiled and constantly recirculated through the grounds and this does not equate to how to achieve the best tasting coffee.

Well, while this was not the BEST coffee I have ever had, the coffee was none-the-less very good.I used Berkley and Jensen ground coffee (available at BJ's Wholesale club)and I could not have been more pleased with the results from this Party Perk.I used a little more than 2-1/2 cups of ground coffee for the full 42 cups and the information I read about expecting the pot to brew the coffee at one cup per minute seemed pretty accurate.

There were a lot of compliments on how good the coffee tasted.It did not taste burned, even after being kept warmed in the pot for a few hours.

I cannot comment on the durability of the machine as I haven't had it that long.My parents saw this pot and remarked that they had the same one for many many years before they gave it away and never had the first bit of trouble with it.

Farberware Percolators Review

(More customer reviews)I've happilly enjoyed Farberware's larger 20-cup electric percolator that is still brewing some wonderful coffee after 10 years.All I had to replace was the electric cord, which petered out after 3 years.
I've had this model for a few months and think that it will also last a long, long time (don't know about the cord, though).This machine looks terrifically retro, is easy to clean and keeps the coffee consistenly hot for hours.After tasting coffee here, you won't go back to your old drip machine.
My advice to you is:
1. Don't overfill the basket with grinds, because it's very easy to make a STRONG cup of coffee with this.We like strong coffee, so this is a good thing.
2. Clean it w/soap & water as soon as you are finished with it to protect the pot.I also clean it out with Dip-It every 6 weeks or so to remove the coffee stains from the inside and make it shiny and new-looking.
3.At most supermarkts you can buy little paper disc filters that sit in the bottom of the jar and keep the smaller grinds from falling into the water.It also filters out alleged carcinogens that are not removed by traditional percolators or coffee presses.
I would actually give this 4.5 stars, because sadly, these newer models are now made in China rather than the Farberware factory in the Bronx.

West Bend 58030 12-30 Automatic Party Perk Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned 3 West Bend coffee pot just like this since 1991- each one lasting at least 8 years with heavy use. I purchased my first to make my own coffee to serve at impromptu receptions that I hosted on sight in my sales job. I use a gallon of bottled water, nice paper filters and Maxwell House French Roast coffee. Hundreds of gallons of coffee later I have no complaints! I keep a second pot for tea- I have never made coffee in it- it is my superior hot water pot. As the other reviewer states- these pots are hot and the coffee is never cold.
I have thrown parties, family gatherings, and had it in my office serving coffee every day and everyone agrees- perked coffee tastes best. I do not care for Starbucks - the strong acid is not my thing. I prefer a strong cup of perked coffee. The percolator allows the coffee to actually cook which reduces the acid.Anything leftover from morning gets put into a pitcher and into the fridge for iced coffee in the afternoon- it is so yummy! For smaller quantity the Westbend home percolators are great- not your grandma's machine they have nice easy to read and follow settings and again the superior flavor over drip.This unit is easy to clean- do not let the size intimidate you.

(More customer reviews)This enamel coffee percolator is a really well thought out and built item.The pot and lid is constructed of enameled steel and the stem and basket is aluminium.The perc knob is clear glass, sealed with a gasket in the lid allowing one to easily see the color of the coffee as it percs to determine when your perference of coffee strength is reached.I have used mine for years with only one very minor problem.The aluminium stem that holds the coffee grind basket got slightly bent, but I successfully bent it back into place without damage.As noted by another reviewer... these aluminium items are weak.However, what are these items designed to do, and what strength holding a basket of perking coffee grinds might be required?I bent the stem trying to stuff a small bag of coffee grinds and the bag of filters into the pot with the stem in place, for storage.That was 100% my fault, not that of the product.I quickly learned that the coffee pot is NOT for storage, but for percolating coffee.Go figure, uh?

Aside from me slightly bending the perc stem, the coffee percolator has performed flawlessly and has produced quality tasting coffee.The coffee easily loads into the coffee grind basket for perc-ing.Being a 14 cup perc, it out produces other 12 cup percs.The handle is large enough for a gloved hand or a pot holder to easily fit into so as to hold/pour the coffee.The item is very easy to clean, including removing and reinstalling the glass knob and seal.Have not had a problem with chipping the enamel under normal use, which chipping can easily happen via abuse.Nor has the glass knob cracked or chipped, or any damage to the knob seal.Both the knob and seal are readily available at sporting goods stores should they need replacement.

Should you be searching for a coffee percolator that produces quality coffee, ease in use (large pot handle, clear glass knob, ease in loading coffee basket), ease in clean up, ease in storage, and manufactured of quality materials that will be around for years to come... then the Coleman 14-Cup Coffee Enamelware Perolator is the unit you're looking for.

A few tips:Do not fill the pot with water high enough to touch the coffee grind basket.If you do, grinds will float out of the basket and you will end up with coffee full of coffee grinds.Be sure that the water level is below the bottom of the coffee grind basket before you start to perc.For a faster made and better tasting coffee, before placing the loaded coffee basket/stem into the pot turn your stove on full bore and rapidly bring the water in the pot to a rolling boil.THEN... turn off the stove, place the loaded coffee basket/stem into the pot and turn on the stove to LOW for the perc process.Doing this quickly heats the water but will not boil over into the coffee basket getting coffee grinds in the coffee.Secondly, slightly dampen the bottom of the basket with water prior to putting in the filter paper.That way when the filter paper is placed in the basket it will immediatly stick/seal to the basket's bottom.This way the filter paper can not slip or pull up allowing grinds to get inbetween the filter paper and the basket.Should that happen, those coffee grinds will escape into the coffee.

(More customer reviews)I originally purchased this percolator to throw in my suitcase for business and vacation travel because I can't stand those funky hotel coffee brewers and cheap single-serving coffee packets. But, this Presto percolator is such a fast brew, the coffee is so much better, and it is so easy to take care of, that it has become my daily brewer, even when I am home. There are no gaskets to remove (stove-top espresso makers), there is nowhere for mold to build up (have you ever looked at the area where the coffee comes out of the electric coffee makers after a few days?), and all of the parts are stainless steel or plastic. Plus, it doubles as a teapot while traveling; just wash it, add water, and plug it in! In less then 5 minutes, you can have a hot cup of tea in your hotel room. The parts are all solid, sturdy, and fit together perfectly, too.

Melitta Coffee Filters for Percolators, White Wrap Around, 40-Count Filters (Pack of 12) Review

(More customer reviews)There is a better and far cheaper filter if you are using these for for your 12 cup electric percolator. (Westbend, Presto, Hamilton Beach, etc)
Believe it or not, it is the ubiquitous8-12 cup basket coffee filters that are used by everyone who has a drip coffee maker. There is no hole so you simply center the basket filter on the percolator tube andpush the filter down over the tube with your thumb and fingers close to tube to make sure that the puncture is not much larger than the size of the tube. You will find that even if you tear it a little larger than the tubewhen you press the filter down over it there will be no problem with coffee grinds getting through.

After you do this you will have a nice paper basket filter inside you electric drip coffee maker that works better than the small round disc filters that they sell for these and save money on these expensive wrap filters.

One additional tip about cleaning electric percolators. I fill the pot with 12 cups of water and then put one of the Cascade w/ Dawn dishwasher packets in the basket.

I then put it together as if I was making coffee and let it go for a cycle. When the light goes on after the brew cycle I let the hot dishwasher solution sit for a while.
