(More customer reviews)This refrigerator replaced one of those double door refrigerators that had 5 freezer shelves which were too narrow to accomodate frozen pizzas or a 22 lb turkey. I hated the old fridge. It looked nice, but was pretty useless and impractical.
My new Kitchenaid refrigerator/freezer is great. Food items are clearly visible and there is plenty of storage space on both doors that allow for varied heigths depending on your needs. Electronic controls allows for consistent temp. Vegetable and fruit storage is accomodated with large bins and coldcuts and cheeses have their own storage drawers. There is an alarm that alerts you if the doors are not properly closed and a constant readout indicating temperature. A water dispenser is mounted on an exterior door which I don't use much.
The lower mounted freezer has two deep baskets that hold pretty much everything with an adjustable slide for more efficient storage.
The stainless steel exterior glistens and offers a lot of flexibility re: home decor. The exterior does require a weekly cleaning with stainless cleaner.
I like the quality, performance, and appearance and bought as second similar unit without the water dispenser.

I've purchased several carafes over the last few months only to be disappointed by them all, including: Zojirushi (felt cheap and plasticy, the stainless steel was just a thin wrapper over plastic)... Stanly (love it, but too utilitarian for home use but I use it when I'm on the go... and a big 64 ounce carafe I found at Walmart for $14, which is not bad but doesn't keep my coffee hot for very long. I finally ordered the Thermos brand and was 100% satisfied with the quality. You won't be disappointed.

Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle Review

(More customer reviews)I looked at many electric tea kettles before purchasing this one. My intention was to find a fast way to brew tea without using my gas stove. I also wanted to avoid plastic, and this was attractive because the pot is stainless and the heat element is under the stainless and doesn't come in direct contact with the water. Alas the water level is plastic, too bad, could easily do without that level if there were level lines inside the pot.

Another reason I selected this was the possibility of making tea IN the pot, alas this is not the case. But the description of the mesh filter is a little misleading. The kettle cannot be used with loose tea. The point of the filter is to prevent any calcium deposits from pouring out with the water, but this isn't really necessary if you clean the pot as recommended. The filter is a little plastic one that slides into a slot inside where the spout hole is. The filter is removable though, and isn't needed to heat water.

On the plus side, the water heats fast. The directions say to boil water and throw out the first 2-3 kettles full plus rinse 2-3 more times. I did this and had to throw out the next kettle full because there was a strong unpleasant taste. After 4 boils though, the taste is gone.

When full, the kettle is heavy. If your hands are not strong, a shorter and wider pot rather than this tall one might be easier to lift and pour.

Heat element shuts off quickly, and the pot heats fast. Takes some getting used to, if you are accustomed to waiting awhile for your water to boil, you'll have to move more quickly because the water is boiled and done and the pot is off in no time.

Looks nice on the counter and the heat element is a round glass stand.

Great, will use and enjoy, but still am looking for the perfect tea kettle, preferably not made in China.

(More customer reviews)I've had this machine for a few days now and I absolutely love it. It by far trumps the quality of local shops and Starbucks (not that they make quality). The options on the machine allow you to create your own drink in your own flavor. The worst thing about this machine is how easy it is and how much you'll end up drinking. It's just too easy to press a button and boom, delicious espresso.

From off to espresso in no time flat!
If you want your drink fast, look no further than this machine. Going from completely off to drink ready takes about 1 minute. You can brew in no time so this machine was made for speed.

Touchscreen
I can't say it's greatly responsive. Obviously it's expensive and new so you want to be nice with it but that screen takes some hard pressure. Maybe they built it tough to last but you can't just tap it. You have to jab it sometimes. Not a complaint really. It seems like a strong screen.

Drinks
There are three drink options: espresso, coffee, and long coffee. You can control the amount of water, temperature, aroma, flavor, and strength. It's crazy. Once you get down you're favorite flavor though, it's just a simple button press. I like a caffe corretto once in a while so I like that you can throw in pre-ground decaf for a one time cup and then just go back to your regular settings.

Steaming
The wand is very articulated and easy to clean. The steam comes quick and stays consistently hot. You can steam milk fast enough to make yourself a cappuccino in under 2 minutes. I haven't tried the hot water option but I'm sure that works fine.

Drip Tray
It moves! The tray moves up and down via a touch sensitive button on the machine. It will move from the counter to nearly touching the spouts. The cover on the tray appears to be magnetic so it just attaches easily to the tray top. It slides on and off very easily but will not come off accidentally.

Warming tray
It warms decently fast. It doesn't get too hot or anything. Not much to say about it except it feels a bit small for how big the machine is.

Pure water
This machine has a water purifier included. I'm not sure if it is required to run the machine yet.

Maintenance
It has a lot of maintenance features including keeping track of your descaling schedule. It has you test your water hardness and program it in so it can remind you when you should descale. I haven't had to run any maintenance on it yet but it seems like everything is basically fully automated for it.

Auto Standby
I can't say if this goes into a real low power mode or what but it has a standby feature. After 1 or 4 hours it will standby. I think it just turns the heating off. Turning the warming tray off is optional.

Scheduling
It has a scheduling feature to set wake up and power off times for separate days.

Be aware!
The first few shots might suck. My first shot was 90% water with a dirty color to it. It took a few shots before the machine put out good shots. Not sure if this was a fluke or just my machine or just the machine calibrating but after about 3 failed shots they were all good.

I did not buy this product on Amazon but I use amazon a lot and wanted to put a review up. I did not purchase it with the milk island. The milk island was quite unnecessary. I do not recommend buying the machine with the milk island if you can get it without the island for a better price.

-Customer service was great: one part got jammed during shipment (despite how extraordinarily well the manufacturer had it packed inside the box!).I called and a person answered the phone right away who helped me figure out the problem.

-Thus far, the espresso comes out hot with a great crema, and my milk is also nice and hot (from 120-160 Fahrenheit depending on how you want it) and well-frothed (meaning microfoam(!) not seafoam).With the frother it's essential to keep the full rubber head (meaning the fat part) submerged in the milk to get it hot (including the intake air vents on the side).

Bottom line: I am very impressed that this quality comes at such a great price.

It will keep it drinkable for an hour (the press pot is not double hulledlike nissan thermouses). I transfer mine directly after pressing into anissan thermous. My press pot has been used daily and it is as good as new.I don't under stand why people buy the glass one press pots. This nissanwill last forever! The mesh screen does get worn, but mine is not so badI'd replace it.

(More customer reviews)I bought this machine for its power and brand-name quality. It is powerfull indeed and is sturdy in construction. With its centrifugal approach to extracting juices, the machine really gets the juice out until the last drop. I really liked it until I tried putting watermelon in it: the machine grinded the juice shreder plate inside. No more quality and effortless juicing after that. Had the machine replaced thinking it was just the particular unit I had purchased, but it happened again. So, I was left with having to purchase a replacement plate from the manufacturer. This third time I tried grapes, and whamo!...for the third time the machine ruined its plate. At $40.00 a piece it is no joke having to replace the plate a couple of times, plus it is not a good feeling when you don't know how the machine will react when certain fruits are juiced. After these three incidents, I only use it to extract juices from carrots, apples, and celery...no more grapes or watermelon...in all the machine will do a good job so long it does not encounter a seed in the fruit, else say bye-bye to the plate.

(More customer reviews)This model is newer inside than the larger, non-counter depth model RS275ACRS. I returned that model to get this one and am very glad I did.

1. This model has interior LED lights when you open the refrigerator instead of the hotter old bulbs like the 275.

2. I am somewhat compulsive about temperature control. I have two precision thermometers, one in the fridge and one in the freezer compartment. On the RS275ACRS, the temperatures were nowhere near what the external display was reporting them as. On this model, however, the refrigerator is usually within 0.2 deg F of the reported temperature (at coldest setting of 34F, thermometer reports 34.1 whereas the 275 would be all over the place, never lower than 37 or so).In the freezer, this model is rock solid at -10 F when the external display is -14 F. I consider this excellent, as most freezers can't get this low. The 275 was lucky to get to -7 F with the display at -14 F. And yes, I allowed plenty of calibration time and took multiple readings over weeks. So, in my testing anyway, they have definitely upgraded the innards since the 275.

3. This model has the icemaker on the freezer door, not hogging the upper shelves of the freezer, which I love.

4. It is, obviously, slightly shallower than the RS275ACRS, but the markedly improved performance is well worth it to me.

5. Fridge very quiet.

6. External display slightly improved vs RS275ACRS.

Mr. Coffee BVMC-PSTX91 Optimal Brew 10-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker Review

First: I give this four stars as the fifth will be earned if it holds up for awhile (will follow up this post when it's time)- so many items these days seem to crap out after only a few months (my water heater's still kicking and it's 43 years old!).
Second: We were beholden to Krups and replaced our old manual (no timer) unit w/ a Krups FMF5-14.Had it four months and the first time it was subjected to a spill, it fried the electronics (placed at the base of the unit).Replaced with Mr. Coffee BVMC-PSTX91 a month ago and we've been impressed.
Third: Pros-Coffee comes out at approx. 185 degrees, brews very fast, carafe is well insulated and simple to use, electronics placed on top, simple programming features, self-cleaning program, cord storage & good looks for stainless folks. Cons (not many)-the carafe needs to be cleaned with a bottle brush due to small opening (no biggie), the water reservoir lid is a little sticky sometimes, the coffee receptacle needs a little extra rogering due to the extra filter lid (which can be removed if you want) and if you don't use filtered water to start with, you'll need to replace filters into said lid periodically.Pretty minor stuff.
Fourth: I am confident that this will be a five star general and look forward to following up this post.
PS: who knew that buying a decent coffee maker could be such a chore!This is my first item review, ever - felt it was time to pay back all those who've I've benefitted from all these years. Enjoy!
UPDATE: It's been two months and to our disappointment, this product has not performed at a five-star level due to two problems: the carafe leaks internally and then when pouring, 'fermented' coffee comes out via the seam between the black plastic collar and lower stainless portion.We initially thought we were pouring too fast, but close inspection revealed the problem.The carafe was never put in the dishwasher and had normal, daily use for two months.Second, the water reservoir has a small plastic tab on top of it that holds it in the machine.When carefully closing the sometimes-sticky lid (previously mentioned), it came down too fast for this tab and snapped it off.The water reservoir still works, but we propped it against the wall to ensure it didn't fall off the machine.
When informed of these issues, Mr. Coffee offered to send a brand new unit out at no cost, but they were out of stock.They sent instead a holdover machine that's ours to keep and instructed us to call them again in 3 weeks to see if the unit's back in stock.Why they are unable to simply automatically send one when it becomes available is unknown, but they are attempting to make it right, which is welcome.I can only hope the new machine is free of these problems, if and when it arrives.For now, no five-star review from this consumer.What a shame.
FINAL UPDATE:
Well, Mr. Coffee eventually sent me a replacement unit (after I waited 5 weeks and had to call them to get it sent).This replacement lasted about four days and then would use 1/2 the water in the reservoir for coffee, dumping the remaining 1/2 all over the counter.I gave up.What a disappointment.I took Mr. Coffee out of the loop and was able to return the unit to a local retailer for store credit.Lastly, I have to agree with others who have said the coffee is watery.It's like that because of the maker's advertised brewing speed.Coffee can't steep properly, even when using 3 filters.We've resurrected an old, trusty Krups and the search continues.

(More customer reviews)On the positive side, this is beautifully designed kettle and well constructed of stainless steel, which is what I was expecting after paying a whooping $179 for a kettle.
However if like me, you were willing to pay such a price for a mere kettle in the hope of having an all metal kettle with no plastic parts, you would be disappointed: the water level is metal; the filter is cheap plastic but it is removable; however the inside of the lid is a black plastic on which water condenses and this for me was unacceptable for this price range. I fail to understand manufacturers who can be so greedy on their profits so much so that they have to cut costs by substituting with cheap plastic even when asking for a premium price. Also kettle is made in China, so must not have cost Bodum half the asking price....For $50 I could find an all metal kettle with a few plastic points, so I had to return this kettle back. Not good enough, so until someone comes up with a kettle that takes into account the concerns of customers, I will have to wait and settle for a stovetop kettle...

If you have arthritis or just weak hands, you are going to have to call for help to get this coffee out.

The main flaw in the design of this pot is the lid on the carafe.If Mr. Coffee can come up with a lid that's easy to open, they'll have a great system here.

(More customer reviews)My wife and I bought this French door, counter depth Electrolux in late April of this year (2010.) I have to say, I am not happy with this refrigerator at all.

First, it is occasionally very noisy and sounds like popcorn is popping inside. I think this is related to the icemaker, which also doesn't dispense very well at all.

Second, the door design on this unit is terrible. There is a moving weatherseal on the right-hand door that keeps it from just naturally closing. You have to exert a fair amount of force to close it. With the icemaker on the left door (and after years of side-by-side units) the right hand door is the natural one to use to access the fridge. Because of the hinged seal strip, it often doesn't quite close. Why they didn't put the seal on the left door is beyond me. It also doesn't indicate that it is ajar and the icemaker actually makes noise like it is working, but it doesn't engage and dispense ice.

Third and finally, it is extremely easy to cause the freezer baskets to jump out of their mounts and jam up.

I would highly not recommend this unit.

Chef's Choice M677SSG Cordless Electric Kettle-Stainless Steel Gray Review

(More customer reviews)I grew up in Europe with electric kettles so I think I know what to expect. I had to return the M677, as it took too long to turn off. I called their customer service and they said it should take an average of 12 seconds to turn off. The average for mine to click off was 1 minute and 15 seconds (timed only after coming to a vigorous boil with steam escaping). It didn't matter if it was full or not. Only once did it click off in less than one minute. Once I came downstairs and it was still boiling away, I was not sure for how long it was boiling so I decided to return it.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt (their customer service was good - a real human picked up in a few seconds), I replaced it with a model M678 which is a little larger, and its average click off time is 35 seconds. It still feels like it's too slow to click off and most of the time I flick it up manually, but at least I feel I can trust it to turn off if I leave the room. (My old dead Russell Hobbs would have switched off in 15 seconds, but I can't seem to find them anymore in the US at least.) On the other hand, the exra boiling time does mean the water if very hot; I would often bring the Russell Hobbs to a second boil so it would be hotter!

The M678 is a bit wobbly on its base, and wobbles a bit when its boiling, but the M677 was stable. All in all, the kettles look good but feels cheaply made with inconsistent quality control. But after scouring all the other reviews, it seems like these models were the best of the bunch.

At least I could count on Amazon to take back a defective product without any hassle. I'm glad I bought from them and not another vendor now (Amazon even reimbursed the shipping, which I didn't expect).

Thermos Nissan 51-Ounce Stainless-Steel Carafe Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this carafe to keep coffee hot without it being on a hot plate. It does a pretty good job at this. The coffee seems to cool quite a bit at first (I preheat the carafe as recomended) but then maintains a respectable temp for several hours. The spout will always dribble down the side of the carafe no matter how careful you are and it seems that some coffee always gets trapped in the cap. If you lay the cap on the counter when you remove it be prepared to wipe some coffee, but that should be no problem since you will probably already have a wipe in your hand to wipe up what has dribbled down the side.
This seems like a poor review but it isn't. These are minor problems and overall I am verry happy with this carafe. It does what it is supposed to do, looks great and sits solidly on the counter. It is a welcome addition to my kitchen and I would recommend it to anyone.

Chef's Choice 685 International Deluxe Cordless Electric Teakettle Review

(More customer reviews)I had one of these for almost six years and used it on a daily basis (not just for making tea, but also for boiling water quickly for other uses, i.e. food preparation).It always looked great and was a pleasure to use, but one day it stopped working.So I went online and looked at all of the kettles currently available.I thought about trying a different brand, but all of the other stainless steel kettles (I wasn't interested in plastic) had something I didn't like about them -- an awkwardly placed handle, an exposed element, etc.In the Chef's Choice kettle the element is hidden, so the interior of the kettle is easy to clean (it pretty much doesn't have to be cleaned at all, since only water is ever put in the kettle), and if the element gets covered in scale, I don't know about it (Chef's Choice does recommend occasionally "decalcifying" the kettle by boiling some white vinegar in it -- I never did this with my first kettle and I wonder if this eventually led to it malfunctioning?).The handle doesn't extend over the opening of the kettle, so it is easy to fill, and the spout is truly dripless.And of course the cord is attached to the base, not the kettle itself, so there is no need to plug and unplug it when carrying the kettle to sink or table or stove or wherever.So I'm on my second Chef's Choice kettle and very happy with it so far.I'm the kind of person who doesn't go in for a lot of kitchen gadgets, and I don't like using electric/electronic items when a manual or mechanical one will do, but I definitely recommend an electric kettle because it is energy-saving, fast, and won't boil dry (if you forget about it) or annoy you with a whistle (when you're busy doing something else).

UPDATE: (June 2008)My second one of these has just stopped working.I still love the design of this kettle, and maybe 5-6 years is not a bad lifespan, but . . . I think I might give the Breville kettle a try this time.Will report back!
