Bugatti Diva 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machines Review

Bugatti Diva 15-Bar Pump Espresso Machines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the red model of the Bugatti Diva about two months ago. After decades of burning out cheap espresso/cappuccino machines, I decided to get a more high-end model. What impressed me after pulling a few shots, was the inner power of this espresso maker--with 15 bar pressure, contrasted to the standard 8 or 9, extraction is quick and forceful, finishing with a beautiful light brown crema. It heats up quickly and is quieter during extraction than many other machines in my experience.Everything is solid and clearly designed for years of use. The milk steam frother has equal power to the extractor and sends plenty of heat and steam into the pitcher. The water tank in the back can be more easily filled with a reusable water bottle--avoiding the method of taking it out and carrying it to the water filter at the sink.Augmenting the previous reviewer I grind my beans (at a level just above Turkish coffee grind) and tamp the grind into the other style portafilter from the pod version he uses.I too have high praise for this very solid implement which has a tight and solid feel when connected to the machine, so the reader now has positive reviews of both portafilter versions. Finally, a word about grace and beauty. Aesthetically driven product design hasn't always been part of our lives in North America. The Bugatti Diva has a stark angularity and seems to slighly thrust forth at you with its wonderful large dial, but this assertiveness actually echoes well with my kitchen, and, I suspect, will do so with most other's kitchens. This will certainly be the only time in my life that I will own a Bugatti original. That being said, I give their Diva espresso and capuccino maker the highest possible praise, adding that I recommend the red version for its dramatic presentation of what is, after all, the most important appliance in any cultured and civilized kitchen.

DeLonghi BCO70 Caffe Nabucco Espresso, Cappuccino, and Coffee Bar Review

DeLonghi BCO70 Caffe Nabucco Espresso, Cappuccino, and Coffee Bar

This is a good value for the price. It's fast, convenient
and makes great coffee/espresso.We particularly like the
built in milk steamer. We also like having the ability to
make coffee and espresso at the same time with one machine.
The only criticism is that it has no automatic shut-off.
We bought an appliance timer to cover that deficiency.
That was the only point that kept us from rating it 5 stars.

DeLonghi EC140B Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Review

DeLonghi EC140B Espresso and Cappuccino Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I owned the maker for a while. It's far better than many of the Krups and other models typically for sale at department stores. If you want an espresso, you'll need a pump machine. Many cheap machines will say "steam driven" or otherwise have "steam" in the title:what this means is that they lack a pump and merely use steam pressure to get now overly superheated water to flow through the fine espresso grinds.(By the way, "espresso" is, for all intents and purposes, a grind, not a roast. It is a very fine powdery grind, just shy of Turkish grind.)This results in charred burnt espresso, with little or no crema.

This DeLonghi, by contrast, does a fine little job of pumping. In addition, it uses a small stainless steel boiler -- not a superheated "thermoblock" [which means the water is run over a heating coil, not heated within a boiler].

That said, the only way to get an espresso, meaning a coffee drink in which properly heated water is compressed through a powdery grind of freshly roasted beans, and thus producing a chemical reaction which releases a frothy caramel colored liquid (called "crema"), is by using a very good grinder to produce a very fine, even grind. This machine, when coupled with a Gaggia MDF or Rancilio Rocky, or at the most economical, an Innova Lux or Solis Maestro Plus, and beans roasted within two weeks prior, can produce good espresso.

As to cappuccino, the machine does a fine job for the price in steaming milk.In order to do this, though, you must "temperature surf" the thermostat. What this means is that you steam while the boiler is heating. It's simple:start steaming your milk and you'll find that the steam power will run out in about 15 seconds. At that time the light for the boiler will come on, indicating the boiler is engaged.Instead of closing the steam valve and waiting for the light to go off, just close the steam valve for a few seconds, and then open it again, as you continue steaming the milk with the light still on (and hence the boiler still heating). This will give adequate steaming power.

I don't believe you can really get a better espresso or cappuccino maker for under $150.If you want to go for a huge step up, consider buying a Gaggia Carreza. It's worth the extra money.

Espressione 1387 Caffe Novecento Espresso/Cappuccino Machine, Chrome Review

Espressione 1387 Caffe Novecento Espresso/Cappuccino Machine, Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First... I'm not an employee of Espressione...

I've read many reviews on this item, most of them, not very positive.I thought I would add my 2 cents as I have had this machine for a little over 2 months.

Let's start with day 1.Dead on Arrival.Bummer.Well, it was easy enough to return to the place I purchased (Sams). They sent me a new one within 3 days, and I was excited to get started. Before you buy this machine, make sure you make this checklist:

1.I have a decent conical burr grinder ( )
2.I am aware that I need to buy fresh beans to get real crema ( )
3.I have a decent tamper in the 58mm variety ( )
4.I am not a total espresso geek, but I have owned a cheap machine or two ( )
5.I never pay retail for espresso machines ( )If you've checked most of these, feel free to continue, if you haven't, don't buy this machine. It's not for you.If you're an uber espresso geek, go buy your PID'd Rancilio Silvia or your Le Lit.You don't belong here. This machine has an aluminum boiler that has heat issues just like the rest of the lower grade machines do.It does hold heat better than most, but seriously, if you're in the $600 market, you shouldn't be looking at this machine. You can get this machine at "other" vendors in the $230 range. And for that price, there isn't a whole lot that's better.Maybe a Gaggia... but I'm sick of those pieces of plastic.

Physical Traits:It's pretty... Very pretty. It's also pretty solid and heavy at 24ish lbs.It is tall, and yes, you do have to hold on while attaching the portafilter. However, it's not as bad as previous reviewers have stated. The portafilter is almost as heavy as my Reneka Viva single group commercial machine at work.It has a very nice (and handy) temperature gauge on the top of the machine that is very useful.

Espresso:
Probably the best part of this said portafilter is that it has options for brewing espresso. If you have a decent grinder, you can remove the "crema enhancing" disks inside and use it's regular filter basket just like a higher end machine (a serious plus for me...).The pump has plenty of pressure to press fine ground espresso and make wonderful crema (as long as your beans are fresh). Some reviewers have stated the espresso is cold. Here's my typical process:

1.Fire up the machine into the standby position (heats boiler to just about 100 degrees C)
2.Once the temp is up, for the first shot of the day I do a quick blank shot to keep the portafilter warm.
3.I warm my cup up with warm water
4.Pull the shot.Enjoy.

I'm guessing people find the espresso cold is the massive portafilter is cold.Once it's warm, it stays warm. But honestly, I've had some pretty nice shots.

Steam:

Yup, it pretty much sucks in from the factory form. The machine makes plenty of steam for my latte's, but not without modification. The tip they give you for the wand is awwwwfuuuullll.Replace it with somethign... or trim it down.I used my Delonghi Ec155 tip on mine and it makes nice micro foam. But the original allows too much air into the mix.Foul bubbly milk...no thanks.

Yes, the wand is too close to the machine, but I have got used to it. It' not that big of an issue, and quite frankly I'm not that picky for $230 bucks shipped. If I were spending $700, I'd be furious.Well I think that just about wraps it up.I really appreciate good espresso.Sure, there are plenty of better machines out there, but this one suits me just fine.Hope you enjoyed this review and that it is somewhat sobering.

Starbucks Sirena Espresso Machine, Stainless and Black Review

Starbucks Sirena Espresso Machine, Stainless and Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bottom line up front:I'm happy with the Sirena.

I'm not a coffee snob and don't really care one way or another what name comes on the outside of the machine.I like strong espresso and this machine doesn't disappoint. There are a couple of things that I like and a couple of things that I don't.Here they are:

Like:
- Easy to use
- Can grow with you, i.e. if you want to pull out the Pressurizing disc and start tamping your own shots, you can, and after some practice, will probably get a better quality of crema and espresso.Bean quality, grind, etc... dependent.
- Quick heat up time (less than 2 mins in the morning) and quick steam (less than 10 seconds.
- Good micro-foam on the steamer. My wife likes capuccinos and the good quality foam makes her very happy.

Dislike:
- The water level sensor drives me crazy. It comes on, I refill the container, and it doesn't go off.I have to mess with the container where it attaches to the machine to get it to turn off....eventually.I've read more than a few reviews about this problem.Small overall, but annoying.
- Price.I purchased this machine at the X-mas special (499 w/grinder, barista kit, 1lb coffee with a 30% employee discount ($375 paid in the end).It was an incredible deal...that made it very worth the money.Full price...I don't know.I like this machine, but I'm cheap and I'd rather pay for quality and performance than looks. This machine offers both, but without the discount it would've made my choice more difficult.

There is a great thread on coffeegeek.com about the Sirena.A guy named Wayne, a.k.a. roastaroma, has made it his mission in life to break this machine apart and extract every bit of usefullness out of it.For true coffee lovers looking for a great machine his insights might help make up your mind.

Happy Shopping.

6 month update (1 July 2008).

The steam knob stripped out about 3 weeks ago.One minute I was frothing milk, the next I was trying to get a scalding hot jet of steam to stop...awesome.I contacted SB and they gave me the number to their warranty dept.I called their warranty dept and they told me that SAECO not SB warranted the item.Okay, so I call SAECO and was not exactly pleased with the response.First, they confirmed that the unit was under warranty..good.Second, they sent me a form to fill out detailing the problems with the machine. They had me fax that form back to their warranty dept...okay so far.Third, they informed me that I was responsible for packing and shipping the machine back to them with no reimbursement.Fourth, they told me that if anything other than the previously faxed deficiencies were discovered that it would be repaired at my cost.Bottomline, if something breaks during shipment, you pay for it out of pocket along with the shipping and handling you've already spent sending a defective item back to the manufacturer.

I haven't had a lot of problems getting things serviced in the past.SAECO's warranty repair system seems a little too involved and isn't user friendly in my opinion.I contacted the Starbucks that I purchased the machine from and was able to swap out the machine...but the less than ideal experience with SAECO is important to share.

Other than that the machine is still working well and am still happy that I purchased it.Starbucks customer service made up for the problems with SAECO.

Krups XP4030 Pump Espresso Machine, Black Review

Krups XP4030 Pump Espresso Machine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After making cappuccino on steam type espresso makers daily for the past 12 years, I thought it was time to upgrade to a pump model. I researched pump types and decided on this model. Wow! What a difference! The espresso first comes out as a creamy light brown froth which then clarifies into a rich darker brown color within a minute. What a difference in taste! We use pure Kona and the taste is softer and smoother than we're used to. In the week I've used it, I haven't yet mastered the froth on this unit, but it's getting better and is probably a learning curve on my behalf.

Some pointers and caveats need to be mentioned up front for optimum performance and eyes wide open purchase:

1) This model is heavier & noisier than steam models
2) No decanter is included. I use a Pyrex measuring cup if making two servings. About 1/3 cup per espresso serving.
3) You must manually turn off the espresso control after the desired quantity is made, hence the measurement of 1/3 cup per serving
4) The water tank is removable--a nice touch. If it is not reseated properly, you will hear a very loud continuous noise as the unit tries to suck out water it cannot obtain. This is just a learner's tip.
5) While the water reservoir is massive, you can only make one or two servings at a time, unless the espresso is diluted. Making more is only a matter of placing the unit in standby, removing the grounds, refilling with fresh grounds and continuing the process again.
6) Always wait for the thump thump noises of the pump to stop before proceeding to the next step. This is usually a matter of several seconds, just don't be impatient!
7) Whenever crafting the froth, you must wait for the orange light to go out before proceeding. This is like waiting for the oven to reach appropriate temperature.
8) Alternatively, you cannot go straight from froth to espresso without first placing the unit in standby for a cooldown cycle. The pump will cycle for about 10 seconds. When it stops, you can proceed. This is only a cool down period.
9) For making espresso only, this unit is FAST!!
10) I am well over the age of 13!

With the above in mind, I hope you take the plunge. The price is right and the difference in taste is remarkable. If you're thinking of upgrading your steam espresso maker, go for it! The Holidaze are just around the corner!

I've had two of these units now.The first one stopped heating water after 3 months.I don't mean it didn't get hot enough...I mean it didn't even get above room temperature.Breville USA support promptly sent me a prepaid mailer to send the unit back to them and equally as promptly sent me a new one.Now after having that one for three months it will not power on...at all.Again, Breville USA has offered to send me a new one, which I'm waiting on.This will be three of the same unit.

Sigh...Don't waste your hard earned money on this, you WILL be disappointed.

I would rate it ZERO stars, but the site won't let me.

Make any rainy day better by brewing crema-rich espresso drinks from the comfort of home with this simple-to-use espresso machine. Each solid stainless-steel filter offers dual-wall crema technology to ensure a rich, smooth flavor. When it's time to produce steam for frothing milk, the espresso machine provides a thermocoil heating element that increases the water temperature, a 45-degree pivoting steam wand with a stainless-steel frothing attachment, and a froth enhancer and stainless-steel jug for barista-style results. After frothing, its Auto-Purge function returns the water temperature to the optimal level for brewing. Other thoughtful details include a 91-ounce removable water tank, 4-1/2-inch head elevation to accommodate full-size mugs, and a warming tray on top of the machine that can warm up to six espresso cups. Krups XP 4000 Espresso Machine, Black Review

Krups XP 4000 Espresso Machine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I don't usually review products...cause some people who do are either way too passionate about their foam, or their kitchen or their whatever....and I don't care to be lumped into the whole lot.

Anyway, I just got the machine. I'm a darn tough person to please, and I'm fairly pleased. No hassles really. Made good n' hot lattes etc. no problem frothing milk etc. My only hangup is that there is no little lever or something to hold down the filter when cleaning the coffee out of it. I used to hold my old one down with my thumb and hit it against something to jar out the used coffee grounds.

The unit is really heavy, which tells me there is something inside...not just a $100 piece of plastic. Compared to my old Krups pump model, it is much more solid, heats everything more quickly and is easier to use than expected.

Let's face it. Anyone taking time to go through the hassle to actually make cappucinos at home is too spoiled for their own good anyway. I'm just thankful to be able to whip up a fantastic espresso or latte or whatever with this machine.

Now someone who really, really knows everything there is to know about crema and the oxygen content of "perfect" foam and whatnot...can write a review more helpful than mine. Enjoy.

Hamilton Beach 40729 Espresso/Cappuccino Maker with Pod Holder Review

Hamilton Beach 40729 Espresso/Cappuccino Maker with Pod Holder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this machine for two years now, and would buy it again in an instant. I'll add these comments to those previously written:
* Crema varies with coffee bean; shiney fresh beans give more crema and have more (but subtle) flavors.I don't get the best crema with Starbucks beans.Peets is great though, so is Nicholas.Even the generic beans ($5/lb when on sale at the local grocer) work OK.Remember, these espresso machines extract more flavor from coffee beans (than perk or drip machines); it's the nature of the pressure (vs temperature) process.
* For a great double shot (actually, 4 oz), I fill the fresh-grounds filter to level (not heaping) with whole beans, grind them for 8 seconds in a cheapo spice grinder, and tamp them (not too hard, not too soft). The tamped grounds come up almost to the #2 line in the filter.I run the pump for 30 seconds after liquid starts coming out of the nozzel. The machine has been turned on and heating for only about 5-10 minutes prior to this.
* I've used Starbucks pods.It does takes two (at 15 seconds of pumping per) to make a double shot.It tastes good (but not as strong as when I use fresh-ground.)Pods are quicker, but more expensive, than using grounds. You do need to be careful to press the pod in the filter so all water goes through, not around, the pod.Be aware that this machine comes with two different stainless steel filters; one for grounds, and a smaller one for pre-packaged pods.
* These machines use ***PRESSURE*** not temperature to extract flavors. This results in smoother taste, but not scalding temperatures. If you want your espresso law-suit hot, nuke it afterward.
* The included plastic tamper is too flimsy for the tamping pressure I've found works best; get a sturdier one (I got an aluminum one from a local kitchen store.)If you don't tamp hard enough, grounds float up and coat the nozzel that high-pressure water comes out of.If you grind and tamp just right, the used grounds will maintain their hockey-puck shape when you shake them out of the filter.
* Coffee mugs don't fit under the spouts. Its not like this machine will make enough espresso in one batch to come close to filling a standard 10 oz mug.I just want to drink a strong brew from a manly mug ;-)I've had to resort to using the shorter, dainty, coffee cups from the fine china set.(Don't tell my buddies.)
* If you're the analytical type, check out "The Complexity of Coffee" in Scientific American June 2002, Vol 286 Issue 6 p86.It contains good info you can use to perfect your brew.
* Use some of that cafeine buzz to clean the machine after each use, and it will last for a long time. There was a recall (on the older 40714 version) because some people weren't cleaning milk off the frother, which resulted in scalding when the plug of old dried curdled milk suddenly erupted. Use common sense, keep this puppy clean, and it will make cup after cup of great brew.
* The frothing wand is not the easiest to use, due to the funny angle, short length, and low height above counter.I had to search for a stainless pitcher of just the right size; 10 oz to the brim.Disclaimer: I don't use the frother much so this doesn't detract from my rating of this machine.
* After years of use, hard water deposits build up on the nozzle just above where the coffee grounds sit. I noticed that water was spraying, rather than dripping, from here (during cleanup). There's no need to run special cleaners through the machine; I successfully remove deposits by rubbing the nozzel with a hand towel after every use. It's become part of the espresso-making ritual.
* I've been burned on other items when chosing the cheapest, but not on this one.It has some drawbacks, but for the price I can easily overlook them. It has kept my picky self satisfied!

I ordered this machine off amazon.com after reading the very positive reviews on-line about it.The best part was that amazon had it available for just $72 plus shipping (for a refurbished machine).Initially, I was going to order the EC155 (which is very similar), but then noticed that the EC330 was much nicer looking (more stainless) and only cost a few bucks more. Both the EC155, as well as the EC330, received very good reviews.

The basic consensus was that the EC330 was one of the best espresso pump machines around for under $200.This machine has a 15 BARpump, just like much more costly machines.Pump machines are generally considered better, since they use a pump to produce their pressure. Not only do they provide more consistent pressure throughout the extraction process, but they don't burn the coffee (which produces a more bitter taste) as "steam only" machines do.Steam only machines rely on the pressure from stem in the boiler, which means the water has to be closer to 212 degrees. This is really above the ideal temperature (more like 200 to 203 degrees) for making espresso. Also, steam driven machines generally only produce 4 or 5 bar of pressure, while pump machines produce the full 15 bar needed to make true espresso (well, technically only 10 to 12 bar are needed I believe). In any case, a 15 bar pump machine is considered a much better machine for making espresso.

I ordered this machine in order to play around with making espresso vs. using a french press. With the french press, I brew the coffee on the stove for 5 or 6 minutes, then press it.I use a Bodum manual milk frother to froth the milk (see my review on the Bodum frother, btw) and this system produces a wonderful latte/mocha - easily blowing away anything you find at coffee chop shops like Starbucks, etc.

Anyway, prior to plunking down $1200 for a La Pavoni or something, I wanted to see if using a 15 bar pump type espresso machine would make any major differences over the French press method.I also liked the idea of being able to make an espresso vs. just strong black coffee as the foundation for my caffe latte or caffe mochas.

Anyway, the EC330 arrived today. If I'm not mistaken, this machine is mainly sold to the European market. However, it's available as a refurbished unit on amazon.com - which is great. As mentioned, it's much nicer than the EC155 and only a few dollars more. Our unit arrived in the factory box, with the factory manual. After taking it out and checking it over, you would be hard pressed to tell it wasn't brand new.It included a factory manual and also a printed sheet with some additional instructions. The sheet said the unit had been tested before leaving and I did see some water around the water tank fitting that tended to support this.

My first impression of the unit was very good. The machine is high quality and well made. While it's not all metal, it does have a nice stainless drip tray and some satin looking metal on the front, etc.The push buttons that control everything have a very nice and smooth feel. There is a warming tray on top and then a removable plastic water tank on the back with a little flip up lid.The overall design and layout of the machine is quite nice.I especially liked how you can take out (and take apart) the drip tray.It removes so you can wash it off quickly.Clean up on this machine is very easy.

There is a steam knob on top.The steam knob feels a little cheap (it's plastic), but certainly not enough to detract from the overall quality feel of the machine (especially given the cost). There is also a steam nozzle on the side for frothing milk.I've used it a few times and it seems to get the job done.I think I need some more practice on steaming milk however.I also need a pitcher like they use in the coffee shops.BTW, the unit does not come with any shot glasses, so you will need to supply your own.I ended up walking across the street and buying some from the brewing company around the corner.

The portafilter is aluminum and plastic. It's fine, but certainly not as heavy duty as a higher quality pro machine. It has two plastic drip spouts on the bottom. The filter basket (the machine comes with a 1 shot and 2 shot size, as well as a little coffee scoop) is nice and can be taken apart for cleaning.Construction seems pretty good.Again, for the money, you can't really complain - especially when you consider you can almost spend as much for just a naked portafilter as this entire machine costs :-)

The unit has a little plastic tamper on the under side.I am planning to get a separate tamper to use.The diameter of the filter basket (which inserts into the portafilter) is about 53 mm across from what I can see.I measured it and it's a little under 2 1/8th inches - so I'm guessing a 52 or 53 mm tamper would be just about right (don't quote me on that however).

I've pulled a couple of shots with this unit.I got some decent crema by using the finest setting on my coffee grinder and by tamping as hard as I could with the little plastic fitting on the underside of the machine.I'll upload some pictures showing my results in the user photos. As far as taste, the espresso seemed pretty decent (good flavor, a little bitter/sweet taste as you'd expect).I'm no espresso expert, but it seemed pretty good to me.

As far as operation, they directions suggest allowing the machine to warm up for 15 to 30 minutes. However, they say you can pre-heat things faster by running a couple of "water shots" through the unit. The functioning is pretty straight forward. You turn the unit on with the top button, then when it's ready, a light goes on.Each time you pull a shot, the light goes off. Then the unit warms back up and is ready to go again (just takes a few seconds). The machine is more or less manual as far as the time to run the shot goes.In other words, you push the button, the pump turns on, pressure builds up, the shot comes - then it's up to you to turn it off.If you don't turn it off, you can run water through the portafilter for pretty much as long as you wish. Also, when you turn the button off, the residual pressure keeps the water flowing for maybe 4 or 5 additional seconds.Clearly it will take a little fiddling around to get that perfect 25 to 30 seconds shot. With that said, I think I like the manual on/off approach over a preset time.I like having the control over how long the pump runs frankly.Kudos to Delonghi for not forcing me into some pre-programmed time limit.

As far as the steaming wand, it's all right.Again, I'm no expert when it comes to frothing milk, but I've seen it done a few times. With a little practice, I was able to get a pretty nice combo of steamed/frothed milk; made a couple of lattes in short order with no problem at all.One thing to note is that because this unit has only one boiler for both making both the espresso as well as making the steam, you do have to take into consideration the difference in temps that result. In other words, if you push the "steam" button, then the unit heats up the water a little more. When it's ready, the "ok" LED goes on and you can turn the knob on top to force steam out the wand.Once you are done, then you turn off the steam button and it takes a minute to cool back down to the proper temperature for making coffee.Of course, you could probably just pull a "water shot" (i.e. with no coffee in the basket) to drop the temp more quickly. The result is that if you heat up the boiler to make steam, then decide you want to quickly make more coffee, the water in the boiler is going to be a few degrees too hot (and this could cause you to burn the coffee during the subsequent extraction if you don't allow things to cool back down a bit).Myself, I didn't find this to be any problem however. And, as mentioned, running some water through to cool things down (and clean things up) is easy enough.

All in all, it's a great little machine.Maybe it doesn't produce the crema that a $2000 machine would, or a lever operated La Pavoni will, but I was actually pretty impressed with how the first couple of shots turned out.As mentioned, I plan to buy a separate hand tamper so I can press the coffee down a bit harder.I don't think Delonghi suggests that, but I'm still gonna do it :-)Also, I think using a slightly finer grind might increase the flavor a bit further as well.

I was happy to see that, after pulling the shot, the grinds in the filter basket are pretty dry.You aren't going to drop out a totally dry puck, but it's close. The grinds are certainly not floating around in a liquid or anything.Just be careful getting them out, because there is a rubber washer in the filter basket.Knocking the portafilter on the side of a trash can worked fine as far as getting the grounds out.

I rated the machine 5 stars.I think for $72 plus a few bucks for shipping, you just can't go wrong here.As far as appearance, I think it stacks up to some of the nearly $500 Breville machines I have seen in the stores. At the end of the day, 15 bar is 15 bar in my opinion. Can you spend more on an espresso machine?Of course... however, for under $100 including shipping, I think this machine will fit the bill for most people. It looks great on the counter and is obviously very well thought out.It produces quite a tasty little cup of espresso without any complaints.

What more can you ask for?I can't think of much.

I'm very pleased with my purchase - and I'm not always easy to please ;-)This machine really hits the mark.

West Bend 55108 3-in-1 Coffee Center, Black and Stainless Review

West Bend 55108 3-in-1 Coffee Center, Black and Stainless

This machine looks very nice and was built fairly well for the most part, BUT the cappaccino machine needs more steam power for the frother and the rubber piece they have over the froth wand is useless and the machine actually froths better without it. The coffee maker takes forever to brew and the pot and its lid are kind of cheap.

I would NOT recommend this machine.

Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine Review

Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was and still am deeply suspicious of these combo units, but this one has been a pleasant surprise. All of the basic functions work admirably and it does a wonderful job of frothing even low fat milk. The espresso maker is a little less forgiving of your tamping skills than other machines I've used, but when you get it right the crema is beautiful.
I have only had this for 3 months, so I can't vouch for longevity of the machine, but it seems to be sturdy and well made.

The problem I have is with the computer program that operates everything. It is perhaps the most non-intuitive, least user-friendly design I have ever come across on any home appliance. The functions themselves should be fairly straightforward -- push a button -- but require you to learn the secret code of whomever designed it.
Add to that the fact that the instructions are WRONG.I can handle them being written by a non-English speaker, I'm used to that. But they can at least be accurate.Helpful tip - when frothing milk, after the steam has built up and the flashing light begins to glow continuously, DO NOT push the "steam" button again as the instructions indicate.Push the "Valid" button instead.

However, once you get the secret code down, this machine works well.Compared to other combo units I highly recommend.

Breville BES820XL Die-Cast 15-Bar Programmable Espresso Machine Review

Breville BES820XL Die-Cast 15-Bar Programmable Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LOVE this machine! I do not claim to be an espresso junkie or aficionado, but I am addicted to lattes and my morning habit was getting to be expensive so we bought this machine for Christmas. It's AWESOME! One of my main criteria, besides great espresso, was a frothing wand that would really do the job, and this one does. It texturizes the milk beautifully and creates delicious, creamy froth for my lattes and cappuccinos. We're still working to get the right grind and tamp combination, but I love that you can also use pods in the machine, which is fantastic for decaf! We drink regular espresso in the morning or afternoon, but every once in a while I want a cappuccino at night but it's not worth keeping the decaf beans or emptying my grinder to replace with decaf so we keep decaf pods on hand for those rare evening cravings. Perfectly convenient! You have to be willing to experiment to get the right tamp/grind combination or your espresso won't taste too yummy, but if you have some patience and try various combinations it really pays off. And I love the hot water wand - heats very quickly and great for hot tea! Super easy to use, pretty easy to clean and maintain, and entirely worth the cost!

Notable stuff:

- heats up quickly
- advertises that the top of the machine serves as a warming station for your espresso cups, but it doesn't get nearly warm enough to actually warm the cups (warm by filling with hot water from the hot water dispenser instead)
- does not require the use of distilled or filtered water (in fact, the instructions say NOT to use distilled water) - just use tap water and decalcify with vinegar occasionally
- the drip tray is nice and large-was able to make 6 lattes, including rinsing in between each one, and drip tray still wasn't full
- water reserve is very large and holds plenty of water
- "programmable" just means that you can program how large your single shot is and how large your double shot is so that once it's programmed, you just have to push a button to make a shot of espresso - eliminates the guess work that results in inconsistent shots
- the pod attachment only works for single shots, as far as I can tell there are no double pods on the market and even if there were, I don't think they would fit in the pod attachment

Product Description:
Make any rainy day better by brewing crema-rich espresso drinks from the comfort of home with this programmable espresso machine. Designed to satisfy both novice brewers and experienced baristas, the unit offers manual operation as well as an intelligent programmable function that can be personalized with a favorite espresso setting. Its custom-set programming function extracts the perfect volume of coffee at the touch of a button--choose from Auto Shot, Custom Shot, or Manual Shot. Prior to extraction, the machine's 15-bar Italian-made Triple-Prime pump with a thermoblock heating system delivers three bursts of hot water into the filter head. This increased pressure expands the ground coffee or espresso pod and helps eliminate air pockets, which allows the unit to extract more crema for a rich, smooth-tasting coffee. In addition, the unit's electronic temperature-control system accurately maintains the optimal brewing temperature of the water to ensure the best possible extraction. A pressure gauge on the front of the unit measures the pressure that water gets forced through the coffee in the filter holder. The gauge needle pointing above or below the Optimum Zone indicates over- or under-extracted espresso. The gauge needle positioned in the recommended Optimum Zone during pouring indicates espresso will be produced at the ideal pressure and will have a generous layer of golden crema.
When it's time to produce steam for frothing milk, the espresso machine increases the water temperature and provides a swivel-action steam wand with a stainless-steel frothing attachment, plus a froth enhancer and a stainless-steel frothing pitcher for barista-style results. After frothing, its Auto-Purge function returns the water temperature to the optimal level for brewing. To save on energy the machine will enter Power Save mode if not used for one hour, and will automatically turn off if not used for three hours. Power Save mode uses 45-percent less power than Stand By mode. Other thoughtful details include a 75-ounce water tank, 4-1/2-inch head elevation to accommodate full-size mugs, a 1-liter slide-out drip tray, a dedicated hot-water wand with a 360-degree ball joint, and an extra-large cup-warming plate. Accessories include one- and two-cup dual-wall stainless-steel filters, an espresso-pod filter, a tamping tool/measuring spoon, a cleaning tool, and a user manual with recipes. Housed in die-cast stainless steel, the espresso machine measures 10 by 10-1/2 by 12-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine Review

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Breville 800 ESXL is turning out to be one of the best buys I have ever madeBreville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine.

I had a Gaggia that produced great espresso when I first got it, but recently, it stopped creating any crema whatsoever. Water leaked from the steamer wand and the expresso head. It was time for a replacement.

I studied and studied and studied all the expresso makers and I knew I did not want to spend over $500 for a good pot. My goal was to find a great pot for under that amount. I read every review there is on the internet concerning the Breville 800 ESXL. People love it or hate it but if you read carefully, you may find as I did, that many ofthose who hate it, did not follow the directions as prescribed by Breville. They treated it like their old pot, however, the Breville 800 is a wonderful pot if used according to the instructions put out by Breville. And dare I say, that some of the others who did not like the pot sounded like coffee snobs who want perfection and had no right buying this machine and judging by standards that only a much more expensive machine could match.

If you want a truly outstanding expresso or cappuccino, the Breville 800 willdo it for you, as long as you live up to your part of the bargain. The first thing you need are really good beans and fresh filtered water. Nextis to really learn how to make expresso. You need to find the right grind and then stick with it. I have a Capresso Burr Grinder that works great for only $85. You need to learn the right amount of pressure to tamp the coffee (also, it does not hurt purchase a good metal tamp- the one they give you is only okay). You should get a thermometer to make sure your frothed milk is between 140 - 160 degreesand then learn how to froth milk. The cups should be warm and you will have some greatcoffee.

you may not get great coffee the first time out--- and maybe not the second, but the more you do it, critique what you did, and make adjustments, you will find that the difference between and excellent cup and a good cup has more to do with you than the machine. This is a hands-on machine (which I love about it). Like a cook using fresh ingredients, the results often lie in the art of the cook. It is the same with this machine. If you just want to turn it on and get a great cup of espresso, it may happen sometimes, but not always. It is up to you to make your shot the best. There is a learning curve to be sure, but the end result is fantastic - and for a great price. I was making great shot after great shot in about three days.

I was scared to death about my filters clogging as others have said, but I have found that the best thing you can do is to clean after everyshot. it is nota big job to wipe down the nozzle, rinse out the pots and filters, and take the little tool they give you to keep the filters open and pokethe hole once to keep it open for the next time. Takes all of a minute- maybe less. The result, great expresso, perfect crema, great frothed milk (once you acquire the knack of rothing), and a beautiful, sturdy machine that should last a long time with the kind of care I ask you to give it.

Some have complained about the temperature of the coffee. I too thought it was not hot enough the first few times I made the espresso, and then I read the manual. When you do what the manual says, the coffee is plenty hot --too hot actually. As for the time it takes to steam the milk, no longer than my Gaggia with a lot less mess. And about the "sloppy mess in the portafilter" and no dry puck ---- well, I would like a dry puck too, but the paper from Breville in the box tells you that the technology they use to get the coffee hotand with perfect crema will not give you the traditional dry puck. Expect it to be watery in the portafilter. just rinse it out when done and you are in business.I accept that and as a result I get great coffee. My machine is not a Rencilio, nor a Gaggia. It is a Breville and it does not have the dry puck--- but it does have great espresso that can be made withina minute or two of turning on the machine. And clean up takes less time than it did to heat up (under a minute).

It has a large well for water which is easy to fill, from the front and the back. it is very very easy to clean. It is sturdy and it looks great. There are so many cool things built in --- obviously thought went into the design. Some complain about it being loud. I have never met an espresso maker that is not loud. Oh yes, I saw one once but that machine cost $2,000 and was fully automatic. There was no joy in making an expresso with that---- no art to it. The machine does it all.

Now, for the weaknesses. I already told you to get another tamp. The one they give is not the greatest. Also, it has the very cool feature where it purges itself after each shot or steaming allowing the built up steam toflow to the overflow reservoir. (Actually this is a positive feature) but on the negative side it uses more water, but no big deal unless you are paying for bottled water. With my Gaggia, I was always afraid it was going to blow up on me. This steam pressure release is very cool and well thought out.

Needless to say, I am very happy with this machine. As you may be able to see, I am the kind of person who looks at what I have done and tries to make the next one better. For me, this machine does not disappoint.

Hopefully, this review has helped.

Product Description:
Housed in heavy-duty die-cast stainless steel, this attractive espresso machine features a 15-bar Italian-made pump and a ThermoBlock heating system that maintains water at an ideal 204 degrees F during extraction. Prior to extraction, the unique 15-bar Triple Prime pump automatically releases three bursts of hot water in the filter head, causing the ground coffee or espresso pod to expand. This increases pressure, allowing the machine to extract more crema, giving the coffee a rich, smooth texture and taste. The machine's fully die-cast selector dial enables simple switching between espresso, steam, and hot water. When turned to the left, users can alternate between hot water and steam using the illuminating solid-steel buttons. The right position gives manual control of the espresso-making process.
Mounted on a swivel ball for easy maneuverability, the unit's stainless-steel steam wand produces continuous dry steam for barista-style milk and froth. The wand also dispenses hot water on demand for tea and other hot beverages. Included are single (7 gram), double (14 gram), and pod filters. Each solid stainless-steel filter incorporates Breville's unique dual-wall crema technology, which produces a back pressure inside the head that, together with the Triple-Prime pump, extracts more flavor and texture from the coffee. With a full 4-1/2-inch clearance, the machine accommodates large cups and travel mugs, making it ideal not just for espresso, but also americano, cappuccino, and cafe latte. The 75-ounce removable illuminated water tank produces 50 single shots of espresso before refilling, and is conveniently accessible from both the front and the rear of the unit. Other useful details include a unique auto-purge function, a 72-square-inch solid-steel cup-warming tray, a large 1-liter drip tray with "full" indicator, cord storage, a patented power-assist cord, and a concealed accessory storage compartment. This machine is nicely heavy and strong, normally with every pump espresso machine you have to wait like 5 minutes or more to let it warm up, well this one is ready in seconds, the pump is not noisy at all, the steamer works very nice mixing perfectly the milk with the steam without making boiling the milk before you get a firm foam and that is a good advantage because you can froth directly into your cup instead of using frothing pitcher (less clean to do), the water reservoir can be remove to fill it or it has a lid too, and it comes with two kinds of filters one to use with ground coffee for 2 cups, and another one that can be use with ground coffee for 1 cup or with E.S.E pods( which although they are bit expensive, once you use them you love them cause they are super practical) and at last but not least the fact that this has stainless-steel boiler is a plus since all the small espressos use aluminum which is not that healthy. In general it is very easy to use and to clean machine.

Bialetti Moka Express 3 Cup Espresso Maker 06799 Review

Bialetti Moka Express 3 Cup Espresso Maker 06799
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Makes better espresso then most of the espresso shops here in Java Town, Seattle. It also costs about ten times less then an espresso machine that probably won't make as good coffee, and eventualy will need repair. Bialetti has been making these things since the dawn of time and have it down to a science.

A few tips:
1. Grind coffee between medium and fine.
2. Don't pack coffee into basket like you do in an espresso machine.
3. Heat between medium and high heat.
4. Be careful not to have the handle be over the burner of flame.
5. NEVER WASH THE POT WITH DETERGENT. JUST RINSE AND DRY. The more you use the pot,the better the coffee becomes.
6. Before using for the first time season the pot. Make a pot of weak coffee and discard it.
