(More customer reviews)I've owned this mug for a couple of years and used it primarily for camping. Dan from Rochester got it right with his commentary, so I'll add just a few points.

The concept is ideal for camping and reduces the effort to make really good coffee. However, the bad points regarding the plunger not going down far enough; leaking lid; etc. are all right on.Also, the cup is double-wall plastic for insulation. The inside sleeve on mine cracked when I poured boiling hot water in it!

I would certainly purchase a similar item again, though not this one. Bodum just needs to increase the quality.I would pay twice the price for higher quality.

Overall...not recommended.

UNBREAKABLE FRENCH PRESS Review

(More customer reviews)I got this little French Press for Christmas (cost was the full $25) and used it every day for five months, until the plastic screen holder on the bottom of the plunger pretty much disintigrated.I've used french presses for years and am in the habit of disassembling the plunger/filter mechanism for periodic cleaning.This is fine for metal screen holders, but this plastic one cracked and soon broke into small pieces.

I'm going back to Bodum.Their glass carafes can break (and be replaced), but I never really liked the plastic carafe on the BonJour Hugo -- it quickly began showing minute scratches, giving the impression that it wasn't completely clean.(I'm not a clean freak, but good coffee calls for clean brewing equipment.)

If it weren't for the broken holder and the plastic carafe, I would have given this french press five stars.

(More customer reviews)I have had this product for a couple of months now. I have a rich history of trying to find something to take with me on the road to the improve hotel coffee situation. I started with a single cup Melitta electric drip coffee maker (remember those!), a Krups, a Velox, an electric Bialetti moka pot, an Aeropress, etc. I hate to go to a hotel, find a maker with coffee filters and think things are fine until 6 AM in the morning when you realize BOTH filters are de-caf! The hotel coffee makers range from OK to horrible! The coffee too!
I purchased the HandPresso out of desperation! I have a semi-professional espresso machine (VBM) and roast my own beans. I was not impressed with the ESE pods, but am VERY happy with them in the HandPresso! I like the idea I do not have to touch grounds in the morning like with the Aeropress. I carry a cup, some pods, and the HandPresso. I boil water (I am still looking for a very small electric boiling pot, but have an immersion coil), pump up the HandPresso, pre-heat my espresso cup and the water cup on the HandPresso, dump both, re-fill the HandPresso, pop in a pod, and in 25-seconds or so have a great shot of espresso! Got carried away one morning and had 4 in a row! WOW!
This device is extremely well made and and will probably last a long time. It will get field testing from me. Hope the TSA does not think it is some sort of nasty device in my bag!! The coffee pods give it away.

(More customer reviews)Lanyard is plenty long and it makes lots of sparks (after a couple of scrapes to remove the paint).If lanyard was not long enough one could exercise ingenuity and put on a longer cord.

It would easily light propane, but if you try to ignite a piece of sheet paper you will have trouble.Sheet paper is not fine enough and is not proper tinder (though you could shred and rumple it to make good tinder).You need a finer tinder bundle. Paper towel was also unsuccessful.I had easy success with toilet paper and dryer lint.It sparks more if you slow down and increase pressure a little.If the woods are wet and you can find no dry tinder you are in trouble, which is why most people carry tinder or fire starter or pick it up on the trail when they can.

I think it is easier to use the magnesium fire starter with a basic metal jigsaw blade as the magnesium shavings will ignite paper towel easily, and can also ignite paper if you make a dime sized pile of shavings (when igniting paper don't set the end of the magnesium fire starter on the paper as when you scrape the flint the vibrations will jiggle the shavings all around).Even better than a jigsaw blade may be a short hacksaw blade because it has a good hole you can put the cord through.

In summary: if you carry or can find/make good tinder the Swedish firesteel is tough, simple, and a good product.For normal people who want a firestarter that is somewhat easier to use carry the magnesium.That is what I will carry, in addition to good tinder (cotton balls with vaseline mushed in), and a very good lighter (more lights/space than matches).

P.S. Just watched Bear G. in Man vs. Wild (Discovery channel) use this after a major rainstorm starting a fire on the first strike BECAUSE he had previously harvested and protected some very good tinder.He did not use a magnesium firestarter.It does produce a 5,500

(More customer reviews)Its very rare to come across a piece of equipment that is in a category all its own with absolutely no competition whatsoever. The Katadyn Microfilter is an example of just such a product. Sure there are a lot of different options out there in regards to portable water filtration but none of them come close to matching what the Katadyn Microfilter gives you. This is the best portable water filter on the market period and its so head and shoulders above everything else out there that it really is in a class all by itself.

So, with that being the case, why do a lot of people choose to go with some of the other models available? Well, a lot of people dont see the need to spend almost 300 dollars on a water filter especially when they can get a very good portable system for around 1/3 the cost of the Katadyn Microfilter. Well here in lies the ironic aspect to this water filter. While it is certainly the most expensive out of the gate, it actually winds up saving you a considerable amount of money over the life of the filter. The filter in the Katadyn Microfilter is good for 13,000 gallons. That means you dont have to replace the filter until you have run 13,000 gallons through it. The vast majority of portable water filters can only run around 500 before you have to replace the filter and replacement filters aren't cheap. When you add up the cost of those filters you begin to see just how much money this filter saves you in the long run. Lets say we buy a different model and change the filter every 500 gallons. You would simply multiply the cost of a single replacement filter by 26 to get the price it would cost to run 13,000 gallons through the unit. Ill save you some time, it will be expensive and the price of the Katadyn will seem extremely cheap by comparison.

You should now be starting to realize just what an amazing deal this filter really is. Not only is it the best filter but its also the cheapest when you factor in the price of replacement filters over the life of other portable units. Its important to note that a replacement filter for the Katadyn costs around 175.00 so the cost per gallon actually goes down on the next 13,000 gallons you put through it. Basically, at the full MSRP, the first 13,000 gallons you put through the Katadyn will cost you about 2.4 cents a gallon and each additional 13,000 gallons will cost you about 1.5 cents a gallon. Of course the Katadyn Microfilter comes with a lifetime warranty so if for any reason your unit stops working, simply send it in and they will either fix it or replace it with a brand new one.

There are no doubt some people out there who simply dont travel that much hence will never even come close to filtering 13,000 gallons. I wont argue that this is a legitimate point in regards to making a case for buying a cheaper, replaceable filter unit. With that being said the Katadyn makes an outstanding emergency water unit hence I would recommend people buy this filter even if they dont plan on putting a lot of water through it. It gives you the peace of mind knowing that you have a filter that can give you clean drinking water for a very long period of time, if need be. I actually own 2 of these units myself as I use one for traveling/camping and I have one in my "worst case scenario kit" that I keep stored in my basement. If an emergency ever comes up where water is effected, I have my Katadyn.

As for the unit itself. It Measures 2.4 inches by 10 inches, Weighs 20 ounces, and can filter a quart of water per minute. I have had my travel unit for well over 5 years and have put over 5,000 gallons through it and its still running like it was brand new. This is impressive as my unit has seen quite a bit of abuse.

The bottom line - This is hand down the best portable water filter available and if someone tries telling you different then they either have no clue what they are talking about or work for a competing water filter company. This filter may appear to be more expensive than other water filter systems but it only appears that way. Once you factor in the cost of replacement filters it becomes clear that this filter actually saves you a considerable amount of money over the life of the filter. The best way to compare price is to look at price per gallon. A typical system that uses 500 gallon replacement filters cost about 8-10 cents a gallon. Again the Katadyn costs 2.4 cents a gallon for the first 12,000 gallons and 1.5 cents a gallon for each gallon after 12,000. Buying the Katadyn is simply a no brainer to those that do the math.

If only deciding between brands was always this easy!

Highly, and I do mean HIGHLY, recommended.

(More customer reviews)This enamel coffee percolator is a really well thought out and built item.The pot and lid is constructed of enameled steel and the stem and basket is aluminium.The perc knob is clear glass, sealed with a gasket in the lid allowing one to easily see the color of the coffee as it percs to determine when your perference of coffee strength is reached.I have used mine for years with only one very minor problem.The aluminium stem that holds the coffee grind basket got slightly bent, but I successfully bent it back into place without damage.As noted by another reviewer... these aluminium items are weak.However, what are these items designed to do, and what strength holding a basket of perking coffee grinds might be required?I bent the stem trying to stuff a small bag of coffee grinds and the bag of filters into the pot with the stem in place, for storage.That was 100% my fault, not that of the product.I quickly learned that the coffee pot is NOT for storage, but for percolating coffee.Go figure, uh?

Aside from me slightly bending the perc stem, the coffee percolator has performed flawlessly and has produced quality tasting coffee.The coffee easily loads into the coffee grind basket for perc-ing.Being a 14 cup perc, it out produces other 12 cup percs.The handle is large enough for a gloved hand or a pot holder to easily fit into so as to hold/pour the coffee.The item is very easy to clean, including removing and reinstalling the glass knob and seal.Have not had a problem with chipping the enamel under normal use, which chipping can easily happen via abuse.Nor has the glass knob cracked or chipped, or any damage to the knob seal.Both the knob and seal are readily available at sporting goods stores should they need replacement.

Should you be searching for a coffee percolator that produces quality coffee, ease in use (large pot handle, clear glass knob, ease in loading coffee basket), ease in clean up, ease in storage, and manufactured of quality materials that will be around for years to come... then the Coleman 14-Cup Coffee Enamelware Perolator is the unit you're looking for.

A few tips:Do not fill the pot with water high enough to touch the coffee grind basket.If you do, grinds will float out of the basket and you will end up with coffee full of coffee grinds.Be sure that the water level is below the bottom of the coffee grind basket before you start to perc.For a faster made and better tasting coffee, before placing the loaded coffee basket/stem into the pot turn your stove on full bore and rapidly bring the water in the pot to a rolling boil.THEN... turn off the stove, place the loaded coffee basket/stem into the pot and turn on the stove to LOW for the perc process.Doing this quickly heats the water but will not boil over into the coffee basket getting coffee grinds in the coffee.Secondly, slightly dampen the bottom of the basket with water prior to putting in the filter paper.That way when the filter paper is placed in the basket it will immediatly stick/seal to the basket's bottom.This way the filter paper can not slip or pull up allowing grinds to get inbetween the filter paper and the basket.Should that happen, those coffee grinds will escape into the coffee.

French presses are recommended for full extraction without paper filtration. But I find that once the coffee steeps it's not as hot as I like it. Cleaning a french press leaves grounds all over the sink.

The Aeropress offers full extraction and makes delicious hot coffee. You clean it by shooting the puck of grounds right into the trash. You can also throw it in the suitcase for travel.The paper filter is very thin and doesn't interfere with the flavor.

I find it best for making 1-2 cups.Five stars for coffee taste, convenience, durability, and cleanup.

(More customer reviews)I like this product. It is inexpensive, has filters that can be found anywhere, and provides real coffee taste in instant coffee quantities and time. This is great for me, because I do not drink more than 1 cup at a time, and making any more would just waste coffee time and money.

This cone allows you to come up with your own perfect brewing recipe without wasting pounds and pounds of coffee. The way the beans are roasted, the quality of those beans, the amount of coffee grounds you use and how they're ground, the temperature of the water: all of these have a bearing on the taste of your coffee.

First, the water:
The industry standard for the ideal cup of coffee begins with a water temperature of 195-205 degrees. This is not quite boiling, which is why the "Monsieur Brew" brands make such bad coffee. Brewing with water at the boiling point over-extracts the beans, making for an overly bitter-tasting result.
Use a food thermometer to find this temperature range and use it with 2 tablespoons of coffee per 8 ounce cup of output as a starting point. Then vary the amount of grounds and water temperature as you see fit.

Now for the grind and blend of your coffee beans:
Melitta recommends that you get a coffee ground a little finer than the standard drip grind. You can easily get this done in one of the better supermarkets that has a coffee grinder for specialty coffees.

As for the blend, I'm not going to recommend brands, but the hallmark of inferior blends of coffee is that they start tasting sharp and nasty as they cool down. If this still happens with your Melitta filter after you've used the right amount of coffee and the right temperature of water, then you can blame it on your daily grind. With this filter you will quickly find which brands are good and which are bad in a matter of cups, not pots.

After this, keeping a couple of brief notes on what you do and how much stuff you use per cup will lead you to the best recipe for your kind of coffee in a relatively short period of time.

Once you get through security...the x-ray security techs do look at the Travel Brita as some kind of security issue, but after you explain to them what it is, they are fine with it. After all the hoopla, you are ready to fill your Travel Brita at any water fountain or even in the bathroom sink. Once filtered, you can pour the filtered water into your own empty water bottle and save up to $4 a bottle for drinkable great tasting water. It is a minor inconvenience but well worth it when you consider the price of bottled water in the kiosks and restarants!I also used the Travel Brita at the hotel.The tap water was awful, like the airport water. I recommend changing the filter after 3 weeks of airport/hotel use. It seems the filter does break down at some point there after and the metal and awful taste returns after being filtered with the old filter.

Filter rate is okay, medium drip rate but better than most mini pump filters.

What makes this really cool is the size and versatility.
The same filter can be hooked up multiple ways.
Put a straw on both ends and drink from a stream.
Connect it mid-line to a Camelback or between two bags and have a gravity filter.
(Make the top bag a Shower bag and have a huge filter that can provide water for the whole camp.)
Use the 'flush' adapter to purify water directly from the tap when traveling overseas!
Drill a hole in a 5 gal bucket (Sawyer sells the Kit) and make a bucket/ gravity filter.(Sawyer has a program in Africa using this system providing clean water for whole villages!)
I have a Sawyer Filter with the quick releases and swap it back and forth between 3 backpacks, faucet filter my (creek pumped) water, as an emergency filter using the bucket system. In my ultra-light day pack I have a small platypus bag with the Sawyer inline filtering, and some emergency supplies.On day hikes I just stop and fill from whatever creek or puddle and keep moving.

ONE filter for day hikes, long hikes, thru hikes, group expedition and disaster/ earthquakes...
