We were recently in England and saw friends using an electric tea kettlethat was different than any we had ever seen in the U.S. I had to have one. When we got home I found this lovely Braun electric kettle and purchasedit immediately. It does all we expected. It has a large capacity so youdon't have to refill it constantly. It boils very, very quickly and shutsoff so I don't have to watch it.I love being able to take it to the sinkto fill it without dragging the cord. It's very easy to clean because itdetaches from the base.I like the large handle grip and the water windowon both sides. We use it for everything instant including soup. How didwe get along without it?

Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle Review

Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked at many electric tea kettles before purchasing this one. My intention was to find a fast way to brew tea without using my gas stove. I also wanted to avoid plastic, and this was attractive because the pot is stainless and the heat element is under the stainless and doesn't come in direct contact with the water. Alas the water level is plastic, too bad, could easily do without that level if there were level lines inside the pot.

Another reason I selected this was the possibility of making tea IN the pot, alas this is not the case. But the description of the mesh filter is a little misleading. The kettle cannot be used with loose tea. The point of the filter is to prevent any calcium deposits from pouring out with the water, but this isn't really necessary if you clean the pot as recommended. The filter is a little plastic one that slides into a slot inside where the spout hole is. The filter is removable though, and isn't needed to heat water.

On the plus side, the water heats fast. The directions say to boil water and throw out the first 2-3 kettles full plus rinse 2-3 more times. I did this and had to throw out the next kettle full because there was a strong unpleasant taste. After 4 boils though, the taste is gone.

When full, the kettle is heavy. If your hands are not strong, a shorter and wider pot rather than this tall one might be easier to lift and pour.

Heat element shuts off quickly, and the pot heats fast. Takes some getting used to, if you are accustomed to waiting awhile for your water to boil, you'll have to move more quickly because the water is boiled and done and the pot is off in no time.

Looks nice on the counter and the heat element is a round glass stand.

Great, will use and enjoy, but still am looking for the perfect tea kettle, preferably not made in China.

Handsomely constructed with an all-stainless body, this electric teakettle provides a 10-cup capacity and boils water faster than microwave or stovetop methods. Great for tea, cocoa, instant soups, and more, the kettle's cordless design means it can be lifted from its base and brought to the sink or to the table for graceful filling or serving. Dual water-level windows make it easy to boil exactly the right amount of water every time, while automatic shut-off with boil-dry protection ensures the appliance won't operate without water. I loved this thing but it broke in two weeks.
The glass container that holds the coffee just broke while i was washing it.

BonJour Glass Teapot 40-Ounce Prosperity with BPA Free Flavor Lock Shut Off Infuser, Noir Black Review

BonJour Glass Teapot 40-Ounce Prosperity with BPA Free Flavor Lock Shut Off Infuser, Noir Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had this for about a month now, and it's performing just fine. This model is good for about three good-sized mugs of tea.The frame protecting the glass body is a tough plastic that should blend well with most tea accessories that have a smooth, low-gloss black finish. The glass is fairly thin but stands up to hand cleaning and clinking against teacups.

I've used two types of loose tea in it so far--a black and a white. The loosely rolled, flexible white tea leaves create a pretty good barrier to water passing through, so you need to take more time pouring over the infuser. The dryer, more tightly rolled black tea leaves infuse quickly but the tips have a tendency to get caught in the holes of the infuser, meaning that they require more time (a scrub brush with bristles helps) to remove when cleaning. This hasn't been a big issue so far, however.

All in all, this is a good teapot for those who like tea in a social context but don't want to get too twee with floral motifs or humorous cows.Would recommend.

Chef's Choice Cordless Electric Glass Kettle Review

We have had this electric kettle for three months. It has been in use almost daily. It does its job quickly. The spout pours better than most pitchers we own. I would recommend this kettle for anyone that wants a reliable kettle but also looks nice on the counter top.

After some use, a little scale was forming on the bottom. The instructions included a remedy for this -- guess what -- it worked like a charm and in 5 minutes the kettle was as clean as it was when we unpacked it.

Four stars from us. It would have been five if the price was a little lower.

Bodum 10552-16US Ottoni Cordless 51-Ounce Electric Water Kettle Review

Bodum 10552-16US Ottoni Cordless 51-Ounce Electric Water Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On the positive side, this is beautifully designed kettle and well constructed of stainless steel, which is what I was expecting after paying a whooping $179 for a kettle.
However if like me, you were willing to pay such a price for a mere kettle in the hope of having an all metal kettle with no plastic parts, you would be disappointed: the water level is metal; the filter is cheap plastic but it is removable; however the inside of the lid is a black plastic on which water condenses and this for me was unacceptable for this price range. I fail to understand manufacturers who can be so greedy on their profits so much so that they have to cut costs by substituting with cheap plastic even when asking for a premium price. Also kettle is made in China, so must not have cost Bodum half the asking price....For $50 I could find an all metal kettle with a few plastic points, so I had to return this kettle back. Not good enough, so until someone comes up with a kettle that takes into account the concerns of customers, I will have to wait and settle for a stovetop kettle...

Product Description:
An electric version of the original Ottoni Stovetop Kettle, this compact cylindrical kettle boasts the same sparse post-modernist '70s design with whimsical touches such as the mystical blue-beaded lid handle and a row of raised dots hammered into the steel around its upper circumference. However, the kettle also has a function: its slightly wider base directs heat upward so water boils faster than in other kettles. Even more, its stainless-steel heating element sits below a stainless-steel plate to ensure maximum surface contact between the hot metal and water. The kettle quickly and efficiently boils up to 51 ounces of water for tea, hot cocoa, and more. For safety, its automatic shut-off function turns the unit off once the water boils or if the heating element overheats. Other highlights include a durable plastic loop handle, a lift-off lid for easy refilling, and a removable scale filter in the spout for better-tasting beverages, as well as a base unit for cordless operation, a simple on/off switch, and brilliantly polished stainless-steel construction that will nicely compliment any kitchen decor. To clean, wipe the outside of the kettle with a damp cloth and descale as needed. The fully automatic electric water kettle measures 10-1/2 by 10-1/2 by 7-4/5 inches and carries a two-year warranty.

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric Kettle Review

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this product and I use it nearly every day - it goes well with a french press, and heating water to 200 deg F is its primary function. At other times I used it to help a large pot of water (for cooking pasta) come to a boil much sooner.

Things to note:
- The brushed exterior is convenient, it doesn't pick up smudges like a polished one would

- The 2qt capacity is great when boiling water for a larger pot

- It's fast. It gets water to a boil very quickly, especially if you don't fill the whole pot - 1qt will boil really quickly, not just in half the time of 2qts

- The indicator window gets steamed and is barely of use. OK, I see how much to not fill it (Max line)

- The switch appears flimsy but there's not much to stress it

- A subtle red light indicates the switch is on. Initially I used to leave the switch on after pouring out the water, but now I know what to look for. At this point I don't regret that it could have been brighter, because it stays subtle in the kitchen. In a multi-user kitchen you might want to mention that the ON indication is very low-key.

- When boiling, the kettle takes a bit more delay than I'd expect to switch off and indicate the water's boiling (with a quiet click). By that time the sound of bubbling alerts me

- I haven't detected any weird smell, I did two boils with fresh water before using it

- The spout is definitely designed for slow pouring. It doesn't spill a drop. However, if you're trying to dump the water out really fast, like into a large pot, slow down or you'll get a trickle down the sides because the spout won't handle the volume

- There's a fine mesh filter across the spout to catch any scaling if it ever occurs (not seen it yet but I have an undersink filter) and I remove that to stick a thermometer to catch it short of boiling. Would have been nice to get something where I could simply set the temperature rather than monitor the kettle - but that would be a different product altogether.

- The lid is nice, opens gently

- I wondered whether I could heat vegetable stock in it, but I think that better be left to the 670 or 675 that you see on Good Eats - the electric hot pot that looks like a kettle but with perfectly vertical sides. This has a tube in it and its shape won't lend well to thorough cleaning. I'll stick to water.

- It feels like it sits loose on the base, but that's what makes it easy to pick up and put down. The base doesn't get lifted with the kettle, so it's nice in that. The cord is solid and has a three-pronged plug at the end.

All in all, it feels solid and can do what it's supposed to do. I fault it a star for trickling when I try to pour the water very quickly, and for the odd placing of the level indicator, the difficulty of being able to reach in and deep clean anything. I'd probably give it 4 1/2 stars if that was possible.

Bodum Assam 4-Cup Tea Press Teapot Review

Bodum Assam 4-Cup Tea Press Teapot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this with the bodum tea warmer (the electic one they sell here) and use it every morning at work. It is WONDERFUL, as I can brew up tea or just have hot water on hand for teabags or my chai tea mixes. There's a hot water tap at work from the coffee maker, so it's simple to fill up. If I had this at home, I'd get a 4-cup pyrex cup so I could microwave that much water at once.
CLEANING:
You use a scrub brush every few days if needed. One of those yellow sponges with green scrubbies on them. The infuster does NOT hold on to flavor unless you are simply not washing it. The infuser is plastic, so if you don't actually wash it off but just run water over it, yes it will retain odor/taste. You have to have a semi abrasive action to take off whatever hangs around. Really not an issue if you aren't a completely lazy bum. Takes me about 30 seconds to run a scrubby sponge around the inside and outside and I only need to do that if I've left it sitting around for hours on end with strong tea leaves inside.
The plunger does NOT get stuck unless you are a complete weakling or have a defective product. There's suction at work once you've pushed it all the way down, so of course it won't glide up smoothly with a light tug. I probably use more strength opening a jar of jam than I do lifting the plunger.
Combine this with the warmer and you've a GREAT product. You can have tea on hand for hours and sip your mornings away.
They also sell a 2 cup and a 6 cup model. Judge how much you might drink and then pick the one that suits you best. I sometimes wish I had the 6 cup one instead, as I find that if I have that much tea on hand at my desk, it's very easy to drink and suddenly find it all gone without thinking about it. I love it.

Chef's Choice M677SSG Cordless Electric Kettle-Stainless Steel Gray Review

Chef's Choice M677SSG Cordless Electric Kettle-Stainless Steel Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I grew up in Europe with electric kettles so I think I know what to expect. I had to return the M677, as it took too long to turn off. I called their customer service and they said it should take an average of 12 seconds to turn off. The average for mine to click off was 1 minute and 15 seconds (timed only after coming to a vigorous boil with steam escaping). It didn't matter if it was full or not. Only once did it click off in less than one minute. Once I came downstairs and it was still boiling away, I was not sure for how long it was boiling so I decided to return it.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt (their customer service was good - a real human picked up in a few seconds), I replaced it with a model M678 which is a little larger, and its average click off time is 35 seconds. It still feels like it's too slow to click off and most of the time I flick it up manually, but at least I feel I can trust it to turn off if I leave the room. (My old dead Russell Hobbs would have switched off in 15 seconds, but I can't seem to find them anymore in the US at least.) On the other hand, the exra boiling time does mean the water if very hot; I would often bring the Russell Hobbs to a second boil so it would be hotter!

The M678 is a bit wobbly on its base, and wobbles a bit when its boiling, but the M677 was stable. All in all, the kettles look good but feels cheaply made with inconsistent quality control. But after scouring all the other reviews, it seems like these models were the best of the bunch.

At least I could count on Amazon to take back a defective product without any hassle. I'm glad I bought from them and not another vendor now (Amazon even reimbursed the shipping, which I didn't expect).

Chef's Choice 685 International Deluxe Cordless Electric Teakettle Review

Chef's Choice 685 International Deluxe Cordless Electric Teakettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had one of these for almost six years and used it on a daily basis (not just for making tea, but also for boiling water quickly for other uses, i.e. food preparation). It always looked great and was a pleasure to use, but one day it stopped working. So I went online and looked at all of the kettles currently available.I thought about trying a different brand, but all of the other stainless steel kettles (I wasn't interested in plastic) had something I didn't like about them -- an awkwardly placed handle, an exposed element, etc.In the Chef's Choice kettle the element is hidden, so the interior of the kettle is easy to clean (it pretty much doesn't have to be cleaned at all, since only water is ever put in the kettle), and if the element gets covered in scale, I don't know about it (Chef's Choice does recommend occasionally "decalcifying" the kettle by boiling some white vinegar in it -- I never did this with my first kettle and I wonder if this eventually led to it malfunctioning?).The handle doesn't extend over the opening of the kettle, so it is easy to fill, and the spout is truly dripless. And of course the cord is attached to the base, not the kettle itself, so there is no need to plug and unplug it when carrying the kettle to sink or table or stove or wherever. So I'm on my second Chef's Choice kettle and very happy with it so far.I'm the kind of person who doesn't go in for a lot of kitchen gadgets, and I don't like using electric/electronic items when a manual or mechanical one will do, but I definitely recommend an electric kettle because it is energy-saving, fast, and won't boil dry (if you forget about it) or annoy you with a whistle (when you're busy doing something else).

UPDATE: (June 2008)My second one of these has just stopped working.I still love the design of this kettle, and maybe 5-6 years is not a bad lifespan, but . . . I think I might give the Breville kettle a try this time. Will report back!

Cloer 5054019 Electric 57-Ounce Water Kettle Review

Cloer 5054019 Electric 57-Ounce Water Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Cloer kettle for use in my office hoping that the water would taste good enough for making tea.It doesn't.The blue light is cool, but what I really want is clean hot water. After boiling the kettle out a couple of times, I made a cup of tea.The after taste was terrible. In the process of boiling, the water absorbed some something from the kettle.I attribute it to the silicone gasket and plastic construction.I sent the unit back to Amazon.

I have also tried the Proctor Silex K2070-1.The after taste on that one was at least twice as bad as the Cloer. It went back to Amazon as well.In my search for a kettle that makes clean hot water I will next try the Hamilton Beach 40898.That one appears to have no plastic in contact with the water.

Water coming out of a kettle should be identical to water boiled on a stove or in a microwave - steaming hot with no taste.Since most manufacturers are good at including "free flavor" with their kettles, why not make the flavor earl grey. Then they would have something.

Pay heed to the one-star review. I was just rinsing the lid off with lukewarm water and it cracked and broke. The lid had sat and cooled to room temperature before I rinsed it. It was never dropped or mishandled in any way. Very strange. Grosche offers a replacement lid and infuser set but Amazon doesn't offer it for sale!!!! It really kinda sucks too because this is a great tea pot otherwise.

Sept 17 2010 UPDATE!!!!

When this originally happened I emailed the company and they said the infuser/lid replacements were out of stock and they would be available in a few weeks on Amazon (which they now are). However, last week I received an email from thier customer service saying that for being so patient they were going to send me a new infuser/lid at NO CHARGE!!! I got it in the mail today. Awesome!!! Awesome!!! Awesome!!! Thanks Grosche! This product is now FIVE STARS all the way!!!

Kalorik JK-19967 1500-Watt Cordless Jug Kettle, White
Average Reviews:

We've been using this kettle at work just fine. It's very light weight but has a tall receptacle that holds the kettle well so we're not concerned about tip over.

It boils incredibly fast & has a nice comfortable handle & easy to use lid release.

Make sure you follow the initial instructions to boil 3x letting cool each time, before the first use to remove any foul taste.

The element is not "protected" so we'd expect scale to build up, but that's easily cleaned.

Only gripe is that the filter seems to fall out when tipped upside down. Even so, can recommend this kettle as a low cost but perfectly functional kettle.

T-Fal Vitesses 1.7L (7-Cup) Electric Kettle Review

T-Fal Vitesses 1.7L Electric Kettle

(More customer reviews)
I spent hours researching every electric kettle available (and looking at them in person, in stores) before settling on this one.I've owned it for about 6 months now, and it's been great. The concealed heating element and the simple one-piece plastic jug design make it very easy to clean (not that I've needed to) and leak resistant (I assume, from a design perspective, since mine has no leaks yet). The only way it could leak is if the grommet sealing the metal bottom piece to the plastic jug developed a leak, whereas most of the stainless steel kettles being sold have several parts, many seams, and thus many places a leak could develop. There is some mild browning of the plastic inside the jug, I suppose a reaction to the high heat. This same thing happened with my roommate's older plastic electric kettle, so it's to be expected.People complain about plastic vs. stainless steel, I settled on plastic for one primary reason: it is a better insulator, so not only will it keep the water hotter for longer, it will be safer to handle in general (ie. it won't burn you or a child if it is accidentally picked up by its sides while it contains hot water).People complain about plastic "leeching chemicals" into the water, I haven't noticed any difference in taste, personally, and I doubt stainless steel would be much "safer" than plastic in this respect. The switch works great, and mine has never spilled water or over-boiled it (as long as it contains the minimum recommended amount of water). The spout and handle shapes make it easy to pour, and the locking top makes it pretty tough to spill.Definitely recommended, I'm buying another one for my parents right now.

PS - While researching electric kettles, I frequently saw complaints of how kettles designed for use in the USA don't heat water as fast as those in the UK.This is for a very simple reason: UK uses 240 volt power, USA uses 120 volts. Most electrical receptacles are rated for 15 amps (though the kitchen are often has at least two 20-amp circuits, per NEC recommendations).Watts = volts * amps, which means that UK kettles can get up to 240 volts * 15 amps = 3600 watts, while USA kettles can get up to 120 volts * 15 amps = 1800 watts.Manufacturers might sometimes avoid approaching this limit, perhaps due to safety or liability issues?Just note that this 1750 watt Tfal kettle is very close to the typical USA receptacle wattage rating. It's just about as high as you'll be able to get in the USA...most other USA electric kettles only go up to 1500 watts.

Hario Buono Drip Kettle Review

Hario Buono Drip Kettle

I make coffee in a Chemex 1-3 Cup Coffee Maker and controlling the pour is important. It's almost impossible to control the pour from a standard kettle. The Buono drip kettle allows very good control and really makes a difference in the coffee. I boil water in a kettle then transfer to the Buono and let the water sit for one minute which gives it time to cool to the right temp (about 92C). I believe it's OK to boil the water in the Buono but I don't. I make sure to dry it when I'm done and only use it to pour. So far, it's been excellent.

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle Review

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most importantly, my wife loves it, and she is a gadget-phobe.I just bought a second one for my mother.

We have been using it for two months now, and no problems so far.

After my usual exhaustive search, I selected this tea kettle because it had the best combination of features.

PRO:
- All metal: stainless steel liner and no exposed heating element to accumulate scale buildup. The lid is plastic but it doesn't come into contact with the water.I really didn't like the idea of boiling water in contact with plastic.
- Cool touch exterior for safety and also it insulates the water inside, keeping it hotter after the kettle shuts off upon boiling.
- Nice balance for the handle - I find the electric kettles with the handle on the top to be much more difficult to lift and pour. This one has the handle on the side - much better.
- Wide mouth top is easy to fill and clean. The lid pivots in the middle - too hard to describe so I added a clip from the user manual.Easy to remove lid to clean, though as others mentioned it does get in the way a bit when you're filling the kettle.
- As with many other kettles, it is cordless -- the kettle lifts easily off and on from the corded base, and you can hide any extra power cord inside the base.

CON (none of these matter to me or my wife):
- No water level indication, but then if there were you would probably have connections that could leak over time and potentially plastic parts in contact with water.
- Water temperature is not adjustable.
