(More customer reviews)Bought this filter at my local BJs warehouse store three weeks ago and installed it that same day. My wife and I have been big consumers of Poland Spring bottled water and decided to try this product to cut down on costs and to cut down on usage of plastic, throw-away bottles.

I wasn't too sure I would like the water produced by this filter, but after three weeks of repeated use, I can vouch for the taste and the smell: both good. There is no characteristic "tap water" smell and you can't tell the difference from Poland Spring. Plus, it's very easy to install (comes with a variety of washers in case it does not fit straight off on your faucet).

It comes with two filters (good for about four or five months of use by an average family). You can get replacement filters easily at different stores (like BJs, Walmart, etc.).

Even if you currently drink water straight from the faucet, this product would be worthwhile for you to buy, for who wants to drink the lead and the chlorine that are present in most drinking water that is piped into homes in America? And if, like us, you are or were bottled water consumers, you will see no difference in taste AND see the savings mount up!

After using this product for many months now, I can state I still think this is an excellent buy. We have not had to change the filter even once - maybe Jersey City water is not that terrible compared to other places in America. We did have to change the battery once, which I thought a little surprising.

But after reading the negative reviews, I have to wonder: we have had ZERO problems with hot water and drips, unlike what a couple of other reviewers have suggested. Definitely highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)After 3 months the filter starts to leak water from every seam (not at the gasket where the front screws off but the seams where it is put together).The manufacturer, Procter & Gamble, is evidently aware that this is a problem because when I called in last year (after owning it for 3 months) they replaced the unit as soon as I described the problem.After using the replacement for about 3 1/2 months, it started exhibiting the same problem and the leaking gets worse each month.I have owned much cheaper Brita filters that never had such problems and I now wish I had never given PUR a chance.

(More customer reviews)I have been using various Pur faucet filters through at least 5 units now.Originally the plastic rotate units, then 2 stainless in a row as I moved each time I'd just buy a new one leave the old behind.They are great.....

EXCEPT that the case tends to crack nearest the faucet hookup.This is particularly quick to happen on the units that rotate.But it has also happened to me with the stainless steel unit just happened to me on a SECOND stainless now.

ALSO the screw-on cap in front is a PAIN to remove.It's round and smooth and hard to find any grip on it when it's screwed in tight.They really should put a couple of flat edges to give your fingers somewhere to grab.Installing is difficult as well getting that last bit of turn-down to get it flush.

I keep coming back to Pur though even with these defects they are a great value.

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

(More customer reviews)We have pretty bad tasting water in Las Vegas, and we're pretty much forced to buy 5-gallon containers of purified water for straight drinking water.We were going through so much, that I looked into getting a charcoal-based filter system for water for our tea, coffee, pets, and plants (all of which benefit from having minerals in them).I was pretty horrified to find how much the other famous brands charge for their filters and containers and such!Then I found these.They use the same technology as the others, but are so much cheaper! So I bought one.

Well, it's eight months later and the green light is still on (meaning it's not time to change) and we run a lot of water through it.It's a solidly built device, with a strong connector (and multiple steel fittings come with it), and I really couldn't be happier with it.I wouldn't recommend it for sinks whose faucets are already low down into the sink, or it might get in the way of cleaning pots, but that's true for the competitors, too.

One thing that I prefer about it over the competitors is that the whole unit is disposable, not just the filter.While as a rule I'm an obsessive recycler and environmentally minded person, in our house we do not have a water softener and all the water fixtures and appliances gum up and corrode quickly.After 8 months, this thing is no exception, though I am happy that some extra tightening stopped any leaks and it still works great, but I'm happy I'll be starting fresh with another unit in a few months, instead of having to live with a crudded up unit with a new filter, as I would with competitors.

Since the product came with a 5 year warranty I thought I would be covered. Ha... After an hour of discussion on the phone with customer service in India, I was told it was only a 1 year warranty. Insisting I know the difference between the number 1 and 5 didn't help much. I ended up getting a 10$ voucher towards buying.... you guessed it.... another inferior Pur product.

Go for Brita - at least they stand behind their products

PUR Flavor Options Faucet Mount FM-5050B Review

(More customer reviews)To quickly answer the question most people will want to know about, the flavoring option is a mixed bag.Personally, I think it tastes great but I am used to the flavor of "diet" tasting drinks so if you can stand drinks like Crystal Light, Fresca soda, or similar you will probably like this as well.This was a present for my mother, however, and she doesn't like the taste.Adding flavor is completely optional.It's simply a small plastic container that is attached to the front of the purifier and it squirts a small amount of sucralose flavoring into the water dispensed from the separate tap.

I'm also pleased to note that this matches a chrome faucet perfectly and I didn't need separate (included) adapters during installation.My only complaint is you never feel like it is installed securely enough.While only finger tightening was enough to use without leaks, it still moves around sideways a lot.I'm not sure if that was the intent, but I would have preferred something that locks solidly into place.Installation of the filter is idiot-proof as you are literally placing a square peg into a round hole.Screw the cap on the front into place, installing the flavor cartridge if you desire, and you're ready to go.

The filters are rated to purify 100 gallons before needing replacement.A small electronic light blinks green, yellow, or red when you switch to purified water as an indicator.Most importantly, the water tastes great and I find myself drinking a lot more of it in place of soda or other drinks.That certainly can't be a bad thing.Recommended.

Update (May, 2008):I feel I should update this review.While my purifier worked, I was disheartened to read so many reviews saying these were defective.After about six months of use I started to see symptoms of problems others were complaining about such as leakage from the mount and decreased water pressure (likely due to a loose seal).P&G, the makers of Pur, were nice enough to send me a coupon for a replacement faucet but unfortunately the replacement leaked everywhere.I now question the quality and reliability of these devices, but cannot change my original rating.While the idea is great, these do seem to be cheap junk and I would not recommend them now.I guess I was lucky the first time.

(More customer reviews)I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out.I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking.They typically last about 3 months for me.I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn't it?For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly.I can't speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER!It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while.The filter would stop flowing within a day after that.The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box.I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.

I purchased this particular model thinking that it would also last, but I was disappointed. A couple of months later, it deveolped a hairline crack just below the filter indicator. I thought I just might have accidentally hit the housing, so I purchased the same model again. Well, this same crack appeared, and now I have contacted P&G. I am seriously thinking of purchasing a different brand.

Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter Review

(More customer reviews)I got my first Culligan faucet filter (FM 15) about 2 years ago after doing quite a bit of research.I finally chose the Culligan over Britta and Pur after reading Consumer Reports regarding their testing of water filters.The Culligan filtered out more impurities and the filter lasted MUCH longer than the others.Best of all it was cheaper back then, I don't know if it still is.

I've been very pleased with the filter with one exception.At my old apartment I had great water pressure.I guess too great for the filter.After about 9 months of use the plastic casing started to leak.The good news is that Culligan warranties the filter so I just took it back to Sears (where I got that one) and they gave me a new one.Thus, I still give it a five even with the problem since they warranty it.
