Lello 1375 Ariete Cafe Prestige Coffee Maker Review

Lello 1375 Ariete Cafe Prestige Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will give this five stars. Not the same five stars I would give something along the lines of a Gaggia Carezza mind you. This five stars should be taken as a rating relative to its price. If this were the same cost of the Gaggia I would probably have to give it a 3.5

I should note I prefer americanos, cappuccinos, lattes, etc over straight espresso. I bought this for a second house. If I were to be drinking a lot of straight espresso I would have bought the Gaggia.

One important detail which is not in the description is this unit will use ESE pods. The portafilter has inserts for single and double shot amounts, as do most machines. The single shot has a small ledge around it which is designed so it may be used for both single shots and ESE pods, with a pod fitting perfectly into the area created by the little ledge. This is a big advantage for those days when you are in a rush.

Construction. This thing is solid. When I ordered it I thought it would not really be steel, just chromed plastic. Well it is stainless steel. And the finish is beautiful. This has to be the most impressive looking espresso machine this side of $300. One plus of being so heavy is you don't have to hold it down when tightening the portafilter. Something I never liked about the lighter units.

Despite the description noting a rather weak looking 950-watt heater, I was pleasantly surprised by the speed at which it warms up. This had worried me at first, but now that I have it I have discovered no reason to be disappointed. While using the steam feature to froth it has enough power to be ready to pull a shot immediately with no need to wait. And after pulling a double shot it seems like it is ready in seconds for the next shot, well before I have time to remove the portafilter and get it cleaned and reloaded.

Another impressive feature here is the warming plate on the top of the unit. Once again, as with the 950-watt rating, I was expecting a rather weak showing on the warming front. Wow, another shocker. It works! I turn the unit on in the morning and prepare my first drink. Then I leave it on. Make sure at this point you clean the portafilter and place it on the unit empty. By the time you roll around to getting your second cup, the cups on top are nicely heated and the portafilter is warmed up as well.

The drip cup and water reservoirs are quite generous. The drip cup underneath the bottom plate even has an ingenious little pop up float near the back which raises with the water level. Instead of constantly pulling up the plate, you can tell if it is getting full by simply looking to see if the float is starting to pop up. What a nifty little feature!

There is one drawback. The portafilter is what Ariete calls their "Thermocream" design. The problem with this design is it is created to produce a "crema like" crema on the top of every cup. This somewhat hides whether or not you are doing your job right and the crema is a product of a good grind, good tamp, and good pull. I prefer the crema production to be a function of how well I doing my job, not a function of some little device that makes stuff that looks like crema even if it is not.

I would like to add that the Group Head (the thing the portafilter attaches to when you put it on) is not solid metal. Parts of it are plastic. But given the price I am not willing to deduct a star for this (or the Thermocream feature) as I would if I were comparing to the $200 machines.

Intex Easy Set Pool with Filter 12' x 36" 56931EG Review

Intex Easy Set Pool with Filter 12' x 36' 56931EG
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this pool from another source this summer.I should note that the 12'x36" pool does not come with all the accessories that the 12'x3' pool has.If you see both available when you buy, whether online or at your local warehouse store, be sure to get the one listed at 3 feet!It includes several things not in the 36" box such as a ladder, cover, and a couple of tools (skimming net and an attachment to clean the bottom of the pool).
We have been extremely pleased with the pool. Our yard is not *perfectly* flat, so there is a 2" variance after the water is in the pool. That said, it does not impact the fun the kids are having. As with any huge amount of water, you must take extra care to keep it clean.Invest in the proper chemicals and a testing kit and run the pump each day for a minimum of four hours.
My children are quite young, so this is the ideal size to teach them how to swim.My younger child (2) can stand in the water and it is only chest height on her (water height is about 27").I don't think it would hold much allure for a child over the age of ten.Be prepared to be in the pool with the kids a lot if they are young.Luckily with the ladder that it isn't much of an issue.
Frankly for the price, if it only lasts two years I will think we got a steal.I would recommend this to anyone who wants a pool that is good for younger kids and wants a pool that can be taken down once the summer is over.Happy swimming!

Thermoelectric Cold Water Cooler / Dispenser Review

Thermoelectric Cold Water Cooler / Dispenser

1st of all: do NOT believe the instruction booklet when it says not to wash out the unit before use! (They claim it comes ready for use from the factory.) It gave a really "off" flavor to the water till I rinsed out the unit thoroughly with baking soda dissolved in water.DO believe the people who say it takes a long time for water to get cold--it really does, especially the first time you use it.That said, we really like this unit now.It fits nicely on the counter, is easy to use, and provides our family of two with enough cold water.

Countertop Superior Water Filter System - White - with 1 Micron Carbon Block Filter Review

Countertop Superior Water Filter System - White - with 1 Micron Carbon Block Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great filter, great price, and a low cost of ownership...

Though I want to be forward with my biases. I am convinced water filters and bottled water for health reasons are unnecessary for cityfolk... what comes to your house if you get city water is very likely to be fine... in fact.. great; compared to what the rest of the world drinks, and especially compared to what people used to drink.

It may smell or taste funny, but not because its bad for you. Tests are conducted at the water treatment facility constantly, and they send you, and the powers that be, a water quality report regularly. Learn to read it. You will see that from the source, the municipal water standards are better than a) bottled water must be, and b) what most filters actually filter out.

That said... bottled water is usually just tap water... and filtered only for flavor, and maybe a little sodium added. Sometimes your really unlucky, and its well water (or gravity fed spring water) or artesian well water (lower water table under pressure.. less organic toxins, and more inorganic ones)... measured via the inferior FDA standards for water, and then only if its brought over state lines. Remember the FDA are the people that think less than 2% bug guts and rat poop in food is just fine.

I trust my unfiltered tap water over bottled water.

Most filters? They are one of two things... aesthetic filters that remove the most common substances that cause bad flavors, odor, and color (water pitchers, disposable filters, whole house filters, faucet mounts), possibly leaving all kinds of stuff you don't want in your mouth, or something like ultraviolet sterilization that leaves all the bad non-living substances but kills germs, or ceramics that are little better than aesthetic filters, or reverse osmosis filters that create a mineral free water which replaces those minerals with whatever it touches, like the container its in, or the carbon dioxide in the air... becoming acidic.. dissolving more potentially nasty stuff...

I trust my unfiltered tap over a bad filter.

Oh... long story short; You get this filter, and you live in the city, and you got this water thing licked. Its going to taste good, and that 1 micron filter will give you all the peace of mind you need. Even if your water was as scary as you fear, this filter would take care of it. Lead, chlorine, copper, cryptosporidium, volatile organic chemicals, plastic softeners, all out. You get a replacement filter every six months for $30 and you'll be just fine. You'll spend less on this superior housing and filter than you will on anything else out there now... even the junk that doesn't work is more expensive.

This filter is great. Its manufactured by Paragon and is often rebranded..

Look closely, and you'll see that this is the same model as the chrome filter that sells from Gaiam for $100, and the same as the chrome model that sells from Amazon from this store (Bestfilters) for $88... they both use the exact same filter cartridge inside.

The extra $30-50 is for chrome colored plastic and maybe a brand. My suggestion is to save your money. Go with the white plastic. If you don't, you are probably a sucker, and would better enjoy a $350 filter that does the same thing as this one. May I suggest Multipure, or any other filter from a multilevel marketing company?

Buy this and you are getting a good deal.

What about quality? Don't take my word for it... check the reviews on this model (the 2900) and the Chrome model (the 3200). On every site I could find the average review is 4.5 to 5 stars. I definitely give it that as well. It does what its supposed to.

Secondly, many companies put their reputations on the line when they rebrand and put their name on these filters. The quality is there. This filter isn't going to break in six months and flood your counter like... the Aquasana countertop filter reportedly does... constantly.

If you don't have municipal water... then you should be getting your well, or canteen, or cistern, or whatever the heck you have tested regularly. Consult a professional (not Amazon reviews) for your special needs... you probably don't have a countertop to set this filter on anyway... :)

One more bias... I am a bartender. I have nothing to do with the water filter industry, despite my glowing review of this one product. I've spent all this time learning about water because I was very nearly fooled by a waterfiltercomparisons web site that pretends to be unbiased, but is actually run by the president of a water filter company... complete with fake 'consumers digest" award... (I challenge you to subscribe to consumer's digest. go ahead. try.) It made me angry.

I spent a day on the national science foundation website reading about water filters and looking through their database of certifications (and picking the best of the best), and even went so far as to track down and interrogate a Paragon engineer about their filters. I actually read my municipal water report, and spent the time researching it long enough to understand what it said. I watched a half hour tv program about water, its bottling history (a scam 100 years ago), where it comes from, and how its treated. I read New York Times editorials about why we should be drinking tap water... and on and on...

I did all that so I wouldn't be scammed. I've written all of this so you won't be scammed either.

Product Description:
This counter top unit sits on the counter and easily connects to most any kitchen faucet. A diverter valve replaces the aerator on your faucet. In the regular position, water exits straight through its own aerator. When filtered water is desired, turn on the cold water and pull out on the diverter valve knob - water is routed through the filter and out its own swivel spout. Uses a replaceable carbon block cartridge (included), in a single space-saving housing. This cartridge is manufactured using a patented process that yields a cartridge with a nominal 10 micron filtration rating, high dirt-holding capacity. A high porosity design helps prevent the cartridge from plugging before its adsorption capacity is exhausted, maximizing the utilization of the carbon while maintaining low pressure drop, 6,000 gallons chlorine taste & odor reduction. Flow rate is .75 to 1 gallon per minute. For cold water use only, includes two diverter adapters, spout, chrome diverter valve.Includes chlorine test strips to verify when it's time to replace cartridge.

Culligan D-30A Level 2 Drinking Water Replacement Cartridge Review

Culligan D-30A Level 2 Drinking Water Replacement Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've purchased the D40 filters in the past. They are good to reduce lead and other major contaminants in the water. However, the water flow is quite reduced due to the extra level of filtration. They only last for 4 months and the flow decreases as you use the D40.

In contrast, the D30 lasts 12 months, still has a great filtration profile, and the water flow is much faster and easier to cope with.In fact, I can hardly notice any difference between the hot water and the cold water now, compared with when I had the D40, and the cold water was annoyingly slow.

I recommend this filter over the more expensive D40 for everyday use, unless you have tested your water and found it to have lead. Then I'd use the D40 for health reasons, but not until then. There is no added benefit to the D40 in terms of water taste, or protection from microorganisms, compared with the D30.

Culligan US-600A 3/8-Inch Undersink Drinking Water Filter Review

Culligan US-600A 3/8 inch Undersink Drinking Water Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tired of spending your hard earned money on Brita Filter 5-packs? For 5 to 10 more dollars, you can get an under sink unit by Culligan that is easy to install, comes with a 3-month filter in the package (level 1 filter), and is easy to upgrade to more advanced filtration (up to level 4).

Summary:I am thoroughly impressed with this unit.I will update the review as time goes by if it breaks, or anything leaks, but it is well built and looks solid, and delivers water that I would say tastes better than Brita water.

I live in Upstate New York, where the water quality is OK, but there is often a lot of chlorine in the water. My main concern was reducing the chlorine taste, and this unit certainly does deliver.

I am breaking my review down into 5 parts, with each part getting 1 star weighting:0 means poor, 1/2 means OK, and 1 means excellent

Ease of Installation:1 star
I have been known to be a clutz around the house but I was able to do it without having any leaks or having to install any extra fittings.Everything is snug and tight out of the box.The fittings that come with the filter have a plastic inset that you can remove to fit directly on 3/8" OD pipe or feed line. They are not gimpy fittings, despite what you might think of a press together fitting. All of the fittings were snug and secure upon install.Water pressure tends to hold them together even more tightly when the system is pressurized.

Installation tip:(This applies if you have 3/8"OD plastic feed line going to your faucet)Instead of cutting the feed line you already have installed, buy a $3 feed line at a hardware store and cut it in half using tin snips or a sharp knife. Then you can turn the water off, remove the old feed line, and install the new feed line connected to the Culligan. This way, if something goes wrong, you can connect the old feed line back up and be back with running water in only 10 minutes or so.

The entire install takes only 30-45 minutes and if you have the right tools, you may not even need a trip to the hardware store.

Don't forget the silicone (waterproof) grease on the o-rings!

Water Flow: 1 star
I admit I was surprised by the voracity of the water flow.I haven't measured it in GPM, but it is nearly the same rate as when there was no filter installed.

Taste:1 star

Water tastes fresh and clean and there is no aftertaste.

Ease of Use:1 star

Turn on the tap, it works. No waiting for a pitcher to filter or worrying about if you'll have enough water to boil pasta without waiting 10 minutes, etc.

Upgradability:1 star

You can buy a level 4 filter (the D40), which reduces lead and other nasties in the water, for about the same price as you pay for this unit, and it lasts for 6 months.Or, there is the Level 3 filter (the D30), which does almost as much as the D40, lasts for a year, and costs half as much. In terms of cost, it is really hard to beat the value of the D30.

Included Filter: 0.5 stars
If you want a higher degree of filtration you can always buy a level 2, 3, or 4 filter separately. However, the Level 1 filter makes your water taste nice, and for the price of the filter unit, is a nice addition. Some stores advertise units that do not include a filter, but not this particular seller.

The correct filter to buy for this unit is the D10, D20, D30, or the D40.

I am rounding up my 4.5 star review to 5 stars on Amazon, giving an extra 0.5 stars for the good feeling I got after installing the filter (and because you can only do 4 or 5 stars, not 4.5)!

PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack Review

PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out.I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking. They typically last about 3 months for me.I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn't it?For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly.I can't speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER!It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while. The filter would stop flowing within a day after that. The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box.I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.

PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700B
Average Reviews:

I've been a previous owner of a faucet mount PUR filter that lasted for over 4 years before it finally broke. I purchased this particular model thinking that it would also last, but I was disappointed. A couple of months later, it deveolped a hairline crack just below the filter indicator. I thought I just might have accidentally hit the housing, so I purchased the same model again. Well, this same crack appeared, and now I have contacted P&G. I am seriously thinking of purchasing a different brand.
