(More customer reviews)We got these to use with the petmate drinking fountain we previously bought. We have a relatively high level of chlorination in our water and my fiancee is convinced that the cats don't like it (even though they happily drink from any toilet in the house).
The issue we ran into is that after around a week the carbon starts to clump together. This massively reduces the flow through the filter and causes the water to back up behind it. This then causes the fountain to become very noisy.
I don't know if this is a recurring problem with all users but the lifespan on these things is supposed to be a month so we're not doing so well. I have another 5 to use so we'll get through them then probably switch to using filtered water. (or toilet water if my fiancee isn't looking)

(More customer reviews)I purchased one of these and used it for over three years before the dishwasher bounced it around one-too-many times and split the filter media in several places. Still, over three years, I saved a little money over paper filters and kept a lot of paper out of the waste stream.

SwissGold is THE premier maker of non-disposable products. The mesh is just the right size for keeping your morning joe from getting "muddied" yet allows more of the true aromas and tastes to filter through. A paper filter traps a lot of these and prevents the true "coffee" from presenting itself. I use fresh roasted beans, ground coarse, from all over the world and if I forget to clean my gold filter and resort to using a paper one, there is a distinct taste difference. If you find yourself in this position, use a brown or unbleached paper filter, unless you want chlorine-tasting brew.

There is no doubt that the mesh in this product is somewhat fragile. To prevent damage, just wash it by hand or use some liquid dish soap and an old used toothbrush, which works great. I have a special place in my dishwasher when it needs a good cleaning but I rinse it out after with good, clean hot water and let it air dry. If you use this product AND pick the proper size, you will not be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)My Royal is used at a deer camp, which way off in the woods and does not have a city water supply.We have a well, but the water does not get used enough for the water to get cycled out.So instead of bringing a lot of bottled water with the family, we hook the Berkey up, and filter the water from either the well or a near-by creek.

For a group of 4 people, the Royal Berkey does a great job.If you have more then say 6+ people, you "might" want to consider upgrading to the Imperial Berkey.

Be sure to purge the filters before you use them.If you just pour the water into the holding the tank, the flow might be reduced to as if you purged the filters before installing them.

I like how the Royal Berkey does not stand 3 feet off the counter top.Being 5 feet 9 inches tall, I can walk up to the Berkey, lift the reservoir lid and easily see how much water is in it.
