Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier Review

Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier
Average Reviews:

In the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers.Either they leak or don't seem to do much of anything. However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:

- The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.

- The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

- You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).

- In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.

- The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I've experienced.

- According to the manual (I haven't tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours. This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.

- The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn't take up much floor space.

With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit.If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you'll have to quickly reprogram it every time. This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.

One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed.Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.

When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you'll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly. If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway.Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night. The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use. However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting - so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.

I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don't necessarily sell all the filters for every model. The filters arrived promptly within a few days.

The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty.I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don't be swayed by the box advertising.

There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit.Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario. My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I'm so use to and which have been so ineffective.

Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I've had previously.I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can't remember.I've always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I've been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.

Update October 2010 - Finally one of my unit's humidity sensors failed. However, since I've had this unit for several years that is to be expected.I can still use the unit to increase the humidity in the room but I just won't know what the humidity level is unless I look at my second humidifier.

this air conditioner has one filter which is easily removed for cleaning purposes, but the intake filter is completely hidden and cleaning it entails disassembling the unit, removing the case, just to access the filters. What a nightmare.

The Sharper Image EV-HD10 Cool Mist Ultrasonic 1-Gallon Humidifier with Clean Mist Technology Review

The Sharper Image EV-HD10 Cool Mist Ultrasonic 1-Gallon Humidifier with Clean Mist Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this ultrasonic humidifier a year ago for my two boys, who seem to always be congested either with colds or seasonal allergies or due to the dry air from our A/C. Prior to having this one, we went through a couple humidifiers (either warm or cool mist) a season because they either broke down, didn't do a good enough job, leaked, or were too difficult to clean. This humidifier works like a DREAM and is so very VERY easy to clean. I love that I can turn the dial to output the desired amount of mist. It's super quiet, too. I know others have said they've had problems with theirs being too noisy or becoming noisy after awhile, but I have not experienced that problem. I've also read that some complain about the demineralization cartridge not working for as long as stated or costing too much. I can agree and sympathize there, but folks...you don't have to buy that cartridge. Just use distilled water. It does the same job, and you can pick up the gallong jugs from your grocery store. While this humidifier IS easy to clean, the manufacturer recommends you do clean the water tank every two to three weeks - as well as the water inlet and ultrasonic nebulizer, which are behind a panel that pops off. Don't forget that little bit of maintenance; it's important. I have to say, I LOVE that there are no mold issues with this humidifier compared to other cheaper ones I have used. All in all, after having gone through a multitude of humidifiers before purchasing this one I would recommend it hands down. Best humidifier purchase yet!

Sunpentown SU-2000 Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

((added later:I'd like to LOWER my star rating to 2 stars, it doesnt work any more. Fan lasted 3 mos, now it doesnt turn on.You think I have time to send this back in the mail? I dont. into the garbage it goes...))

I looked for just regular ultrasonic humidifiers and couldnt find hardly any that just held alot of water, had a directional spout and the mist came out on top so it didnt get the carpet wet, was quiet and that's it... dont need filters or anti-bacterial whatever that will just break, i know how to wash a piece of plastic when its dirty.Anyway, this model is all those things, I would have said I was 100% satisfied with it.AND I bought it from the manufacturer after amazon screwed up my order and tried to charge me a ton for shipping.
BUT, i cant give it 5 stars because when the thing runs out of water, an alarm goes of, what the heck is that for?Just turn off if you're so worried. It woke me up and scared me half to death. Today it woke up my twins and scared them, its like a siren this thing.I'm going to take some pliars to it and 'fix' it myself.Other than that, works like a charm.BIG tank... good.

CHANGE:fan broke after 2 mos. its trash now, going in the garbage.

Honeywell QuietCare Cool-Moisture Humidifier, 3-Gallon, HCM-630 Review

Honeywell QuietCare Cool-Moisture Humidifier, 3-Gallon, HCM-630
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this humidifier to replace one that was purchased about six years ago, also a Honeywell model. That model had a two gallon tank and would shut off if the water ran out.Compared to that, this newer model has a relatively TINY tank, at perhaps a gallon or so.Since the unit is rated at 3 gallons per day output, that would mean quit a bit of refilling on very dry days.On our old unit, the tank had a handle on the underside (where the fill cap is) so that when you filled it, you had something to hold on to.Not so with the new unit. And to make matters even more difficult, the bottom of this new tank is not flat, so you can't just set it under the faucet and expect it to stay there.

The most annoying thing though is the absence of an automatic shutoff and indicator light when the water level gets too low.Because the tank is in the back of the unit, it is hard to see the water level. This thing will run and run and run without water, drying out the filter so you have to take it out an re-soak it again. While stylistically nicer, this units functionality is a real step down from previous generations of their humidifiers.

Product Description:
Keep your home properly hydrated with Honeywell's compact HCM-630 3-gallon-output-per-day humidifier, which is designed for rooms up to 1050 square feet--ideal for living rooms and larger bedrooms. A humidifier is helpful in introducing moisture to your home in order to help you avoid dry skin, chapped lips, dry nasal passages and static electricity as well as keep your wood floors and furnishings in good shape.
This QuietCare model has a fan that blows out invisible, moisture-balanced air, and is 30 percent quieter than other models. It has manual controls for simple operation and 3 moisture control settings. The Protec cleaning cartridge helps reduce mineral build-up, while the antimicrobial-treated filter helps prevent the growth and migration of mold, fungus, algae and bacteria on the filter--both contributing to a fresher, cleaner mist and extend filter life.
The HCM-630 has a 1-1/4-gallon tank capacity, an adjustable humidistat that maintains desired comfort level, and an auto shut-off function that occurs when desired humidity level is reached or tank is empty. It measures 8 by 13-3/4 by 16 inches (WxHxD), is backed by a 5-year warranty, and uses HAC-504/HAC-504AW replacement filters.
