Permeate Pump With Clips Review

Permeate Pump With Clips
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this with my Watts RO system. The permeate pump has John Guest type connections, which is easy for connecting tubes. The connector size is 1/4 inch.Since my Watts system uses 3/8 inch tubes for the filtered water, I also bought 1/4 to 3/8 adapters (which will be included if you buy the permeate pump from Watts' site directly). The Watts manifold system has two 3/8" outputs to fork the filtered water to tank and faucet.I had to end one of them and add a 3/8 tee as a fork after the permeate pump. While I am writing this, I think I could have instead used a 3/8x3/8x1/4 tee between the manifold and the pump (no need to end an output and also save an adapter).

RO systems rely on water pressure difference on the two sides of membrane: the lower the pressure difference, the more wasted water. The often cited 4:1 waste water ratio is for when the tank is empty. As the tank fills, the pressure difference is smaller and more wasted water is generated and longer time is needed to produce the same amount of filtered water. This is why people who tested the ratio at home found higher ratios than the published one.In reality the waste ratio may be even higher as the tank is rarely empty before the system resumes to work again. This pump separates the tank from the membrane, making the pressure on the tank side of the membrane always low.As explained above, this will greatly reduce the amount of waste water.

When pressure difference on a membrane is low, the rejection rate (percentage of contaminants rejected) is also low, resulting in more TDS (total dissolved solids) in the filtered water. So, this pump will also increase rejection rate.High pressure difference also makes it faster to fill the tank, and a 24 GPD (gallons-per-day) membrane may be enough for a system that needed 50 GPD.In addition, the hydraulic pressure of the pump will push more water into the tank, resulting in a higher tank pressure when filled than without the pump.

An RO system has a shutoff valve, which shuts off the water when the pressure difference is low and reopens when the pressure difference increases to a certain level. This stops the system from wasting too much water. When this pump is used, it may render the shutoff valve useless. This is true especially for manifold systems like the Watts because the shutoff valve is built into the manifold and cannot see the tank pressure after the permeate pump is installed. As a result, the input water is never shut off.In this situation, the pump will act like a pseudo-shutoff valve and will shut off the system when tank pressure reaches a high level. But when the tank pressure is reduced a little (say by drawing a small cup of water), it immediately resumes to work. This increases the chance of TDS creep:even when the system stops, the membrane still sits in water, and the TDS on the tap water side will gradually creep through the membrane into the filtered water side. The more frequently the tap water is "refreshed" (as in the above scenario), the more TDS creeps into tank.I alleviated this problem by adding an auto shutoff valve externally between the tank line and the input water line.I used a regular shutoff valve (which shuts off at 60% pressure), but a 90% valve probably is better (see the comment by Waterdrinker).

The pump will generate a click sound every few seconds when it is working. This is normal and the sound is nothing compared to the hissing noise from the air gap of the RO system.

Compared to not using the pump, I probably save 4-5 gallons water for each gallon of filtered water. We use about 3 gallons per day for cooking and drinking. So our annual saving is about 5000 gallons, or about 15-20 bucks a year.

Watts 116011 Standard Faucet with Air Gap Black Review

Watts 116011 Standard Faucet with Air Gap Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is *almost* identical to the chrome faucet which Watts includes with the WP-5 reverse osmosis kit. Hold the lever down to dispense water, or snap it into an up position to have it stay on.

Quite a bit of noise can be heard through the air gap hole while the RO tank is filling. It sounds similar to someone a few houses down spraying water from a hose into a small pond.

This faucet works well, except for one important installation caveat. Unlike the chrome faucet included with the current version of the Watts WP-5, this replacement does not include a flow restrictor. And, the flow restrictor included with the WP-5's chrome faucet doesn't fit into the red waste tube of this black faucet -- the red tube's inner diameter is too small, even though its outer diameter matches the red tube from the chrome faucet (1/4").

I found out the hard way that the flow restrictor is needed to reduce the flow of waste water from the membrane. Without it, water will go gushing down your drain via the black waste tube on this faucet -- but a good bit of water will also continuously spurt out the air gap hole (onto your counter and hopefully not far from your sink).

So, if you have a current model WP-5 which includes the newer chrome faucet that matches this one, you will need to need to cut off a length of the red tubing from the chrome faucet. Then, insert the flow restrictor (a red, plastic, spiral shaped piece) into that red tubing. Then, union it to the black faucet's red tubing using a 1/4" Watts Quick Connect -- you can get this part at the big home improvement store. Then you are good to go ahead and connect the red tubing to the manifold's drain port.

Final note: the WP-5 installation manual is decent, but has a few errors and and a few items that are out of date. This flow restrictor, for instance, was apparently built in to the manifold assembly before. With my unit, however, it was in a special baggie inside the chrome faucet box, with an attached page containing installation instructions for that part. Apparently, Watts changed the parts and install procedures, but didn't fully document it and didn't update the replacement faucets to include the required tubing inner diameter and flow restrictor part.

Multi-Pure MP880SB NEWEST MODEL Arsenic-Reducing Under-Sink Water Filter - Includes Faucet Review

Multi-Pure MP880SB NEWEST MODEL Arsenic-Reducing Under-Sink Water Filter - Includes Faucet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing I did was Google: Environmental Working Group, and checked out years of data on what is in my tap water.I was shocked and dismayed at how polluted it was with heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and more. This was when I decided that the most important thing in life is good health, and without it, frankly, you can't enjoy anything else in life, and when it's gone, it's gone for good.

A lot of those heavy metals and chemicals do damage to your body, and some accumulate over years, never leaving your body, causing harm throughout your life. It's important to never consume them in the first place.

Hence, my search began for what the heck is the best way to filter water?I found three main methods: carbon filtration (this product), distillation, and military style reverse osmosis.

Distillation seemed like something right out of high-school chemistry. It's easy and simple to do.What you need to remember though, is that distillation will in fact get rid of many things, like heavy metals and some organic compounds, that have boiling point temperatures above that of water; however, there's a heck ofa lot of compounds that have BP's below water and will never be filtered out with distillation. That was the first strike against distillation. The other issue is that important trace elements (like Zn, Cu, Mg) will also get left behind.Distilled water then becomes "dead" water (mineral-less water). This "dead" water is so pure, that the H20 molecules have nothing to react with but the CO2 in the air around it.This causes the pH of the water to drop. This aciditity, coupled with low intake of bone-densifying minerals (water being the main source), causes bone loss, especially in women, to be accelerated to an extreme rate.Even taking vitamin/mineral pills will only slightly slow the damage.Hence, avoid distillation (not to mention the GREAT potential for distillation machines to be bacterial breeding grounds).

Military style reverse osmosis seemed like the next best thing. It will not only get rid of heavy metals like distillation, but will get rid of EVERYTHING (including radioactivity, if you get the high end models).Again, the "dead" water scenario creeps in to even a greater extent because reverse osmosis water can literally eat away at copper pipes in no time (you'll find that a public water utility company found out the wrong way once).Imagine what it does in the long run with your body!?Another problem with reverse osmosis is the GREAT amount of waste water you'll be generating (READ: lots of money lost).Even if you get a "waste-less" system, which send the "bad" water back through your piping ot be used to clean your clothes and dishes, well, that's not much better is it?You'll be bathing in concentrated arsenic water. But hey, at least you'll save a few bucks.

So, the only other option was carbon filtration. And hence the long search for the best carbon filter began.I searched virtually every single possible company that is out there (big and small names).I can say without qualms that in terms of the number of different pollutants that can be removed, and certification for the removal of such pollutents, Multipure is the king.It gets rid of the gunk, leaving the important trace minerals. The only downside is the price. But consider it as a preventative health saving investment.I bought this item, and don't regret it one bit.Clean, pure tasting water.Peace of mind. And no, I'm not a spokesperson for this company, just a happy customer.

Installation of this item isn't the easiest (I'm no plumber), but about 1.5 hours and 2 sweatdrops later I got it done myself. One item broke during installation, but multipure sent a replacement part quickly with no questions asked (after paying that much that's the least you'd expect)!

Oh, and one last thing.I got this same exact model, except with the capacity monitor (MP880EL).Now, the reason I got it is because they claim that by getting this model, the life of your filter will essentially double.I found this to be a bit odd once I did get it installed.Contacted the company and never got a satisfactory response.

Think about it this way.All you're doing, is installing an electronic device that measure how much water has been passed through the filter. If the filter life is rated at X gallons, then how is a measuring device going to cause the filter to be able to last 2X gallons? It makes no sense!Perhaps it's just a marketing ploy to get you to buy something that probably cost them no more than $10.If I were you, I'd just get this cheaper model, and be conservative and change the filter as per the instructed X gallons. You'll note, however, in their certificates, that their removal percentage of contaminants is rated at much more than X gallons, hence you'd theoretically be safe at using it for 2X gallons and achieve the same filtration percentage.

Disclaimer: Don't follow my advice, I know nothing.Do your own research before buying anything.

Watts 520008 Counter-Top Drinking Water Filter with Audible Alarm Review

Watts 520008 Counter-Top Drinking Water Filter with Audible Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Heard good things about the regular Watts water filter, so I decided to move up and get the one with the alarm. Unfortunately, the first unit I received had a small hole at the base of the spout, and a small stream of water sprayed out all over.I returned it and got a new one from Amazon 2 days later that so far, works fine.Could taste the difference in the water once installed (which was so easy I could figure it out without the instructions), and quite satisfied so far.Won't be able to report on how that alarm works for a while, but it starts at 4000, and turns off when using regular tap water and on again when using the filtered water.

Included were the diverting valve, filter wrench and batteries, but only came with one faucet adapter that worked with an outside thread and not for an inside thread.I called the company since Amazon doesn't provide parts and was told an adapter with an inside thread is not included for this model. Therefore I went to Lowe's and picked up an faucet adapter that worked for $2, so no big deal. However, I do feel I really shouldn't have to pay for a part that should be included in every water filter you connect directly to the faucet (might have rated it a 5 if not for that).

Product Description:
Filter combines .75lbs. of KDF-55 media, a compound of Copper and Zinc, and GAC (Granulated Activated Carbon) and works especially well on Chlorine taste and odors, while adding all the reduction-oxidation benefits of the KDF compound. The water filter cartridge utilizes KDF filtration media, GAC (granular activated carbon) and 3 stages of polypropylene sediment filtration.KDF Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that filter water through a process based upon the principle of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. We can explain redox like this: KDF Fluid Treatment's unique combination of copper and zinc creates an electro-chemical reaction. During this reaction, electrons are transferred between molecules, and new compounds are created. The GAC media helps to further reduce chlorine taste and odors.

Not much to say here. This is what you get when your catridges need replacing on your AP-DWS1000 Drinking Water System. Our AquaPure just stopped working one day; the water wouldn't flow out. It's because we hit the 625 gallon limit. So, that's the "clear indication" you need to buy the new cartridges. When you replace the old ones, be sure to have a mixing bowl or bucket to catch the water that will spill out.I checked with company (which is owned by 3M).Unfortunately the old cartridges cannot be recycled at this time. What a waste! That's why I deducted one star.

Anyway, putting in the replacements is pretty easy: turn off the water supply, lift up the plastic cap, and remove the old catridges. There is an order to re-installing them, so pay attention to cartridge #1 versus #2.Then spin the little dial to give you 625 more gallons of filtered water.
