Permeate Pump With Clips Review

Permeate Pump With Clips
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this with my Watts RO system. The permeate pump has John Guest type connections, which is easy for connecting tubes. The connector size is 1/4 inch.Since my Watts system uses 3/8 inch tubes for the filtered water, I also bought 1/4 to 3/8 adapters (which will be included if you buy the permeate pump from Watts' site directly). The Watts manifold system has two 3/8" outputs to fork the filtered water to tank and faucet.I had to end one of them and add a 3/8 tee as a fork after the permeate pump. While I am writing this, I think I could have instead used a 3/8x3/8x1/4 tee between the manifold and the pump (no need to end an output and also save an adapter).

RO systems rely on water pressure difference on the two sides of membrane: the lower the pressure difference, the more wasted water. The often cited 4:1 waste water ratio is for when the tank is empty. As the tank fills, the pressure difference is smaller and more wasted water is generated and longer time is needed to produce the same amount of filtered water. This is why people who tested the ratio at home found higher ratios than the published one.In reality the waste ratio may be even higher as the tank is rarely empty before the system resumes to work again. This pump separates the tank from the membrane, making the pressure on the tank side of the membrane always low.As explained above, this will greatly reduce the amount of waste water.

When pressure difference on a membrane is low, the rejection rate (percentage of contaminants rejected) is also low, resulting in more TDS (total dissolved solids) in the filtered water. So, this pump will also increase rejection rate.High pressure difference also makes it faster to fill the tank, and a 24 GPD (gallons-per-day) membrane may be enough for a system that needed 50 GPD.In addition, the hydraulic pressure of the pump will push more water into the tank, resulting in a higher tank pressure when filled than without the pump.

An RO system has a shutoff valve, which shuts off the water when the pressure difference is low and reopens when the pressure difference increases to a certain level. This stops the system from wasting too much water. When this pump is used, it may render the shutoff valve useless. This is true especially for manifold systems like the Watts because the shutoff valve is built into the manifold and cannot see the tank pressure after the permeate pump is installed. As a result, the input water is never shut off.In this situation, the pump will act like a pseudo-shutoff valve and will shut off the system when tank pressure reaches a high level. But when the tank pressure is reduced a little (say by drawing a small cup of water), it immediately resumes to work. This increases the chance of TDS creep:even when the system stops, the membrane still sits in water, and the TDS on the tap water side will gradually creep through the membrane into the filtered water side. The more frequently the tap water is "refreshed" (as in the above scenario), the more TDS creeps into tank.I alleviated this problem by adding an auto shutoff valve externally between the tank line and the input water line.I used a regular shutoff valve (which shuts off at 60% pressure), but a 90% valve probably is better (see the comment by Waterdrinker).

The pump will generate a click sound every few seconds when it is working. This is normal and the sound is nothing compared to the hissing noise from the air gap of the RO system.

Compared to not using the pump, I probably save 4-5 gallons water for each gallon of filtered water. We use about 3 gallons per day for cooking and drinking. So our annual saving is about 5000 gallons, or about 15-20 bucks a year.

This is actually an energy recovery device. That allows you to waste up to eighty percent less water,
Not only will you waste much less water, you will make water faster and of higher quality. You will be able to use a new style refigerator ice and water door .
In fact you may actually need this pump to make your fridge work. Lots of new refrigerators wil not make ice when used with the typical RO system. Not enough pressure. Less waste up 80 %.
Better water quality.Faster and at higher delivery pressure.Non-electric.

GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis Water System Review

GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis Water System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At the time when GE was about to announce this, I was a GE water products dealer. I agree this has some great features, delivers more water per minute, saves spaces and eliminates the tank associated with other models but... A water softener is highly recommended before the Merlin because if your total hardness is over 12 grains, you may face replacing membranes annually. That is 2 at a minimum cost of $80 each. after having installed over 50 of these, We have had calls for most reporting lack of performance within the first year which I attribute to lack of use. these need to be run frequently not just for the occasional glass of water. It is good for light commercial use like a restaurant but not the average home. It produces a higher total dissolved finished product than all other R/O membranes which is why it has high flow at residential line pressure than others which product lower TDS at reduced flows. These require high pressure to operated at optimum performance and are quite weak at pressures below 50 psi.
The air gap mounting that comes with the unit only works with stainless steel or cast iron sinks not granite counters. When I inquired with GE about this, they said there were no plans to change this.
GE has since sold 80% of it's water products division to Pentair and it remains to be seen how this will bode for the Merlin.
The Merlin can only be operated on treated water from a municipal supply and will foul quickly on many well waters.
I recommend this only where you can service this yourself, have a working knowledge of reverse osmosis and can backwash this about once a month without paying for this service.

Product Description:
Filter combines .75lbs. of KDF-55 media, a compound of Copper and Zinc, and GAC (Granulated Activated Carbon) and works especially well on Chlorine taste and odors, while adding all the reduction-oxidation benefits of the KDF compound. The water filter cartridge utilizes KDF filtration media, GAC (granular activated carbon) and 3 stages of polypropylene sediment filtration.KDF Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that filter water through a process based upon the principle of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. We can explain redox like this: KDF Fluid Treatment's unique combination of copper and zinc creates an electro-chemical reaction. During this reaction, electrons are transferred between molecules, and new compounds are created. The GAC media helps to further reduce chlorine taste and odors.

I got this system for the tough Tijuana water which is microbiologically clean, but has too much chemicals and low water pressure. The installation went straight forward and took about 90 minutes. My only con (thus 4 stars) is the instructions had many errors but with a little common sense I figure it all out. After 3 full tank cycles the water came out crystal clear and with no taste or smell. Just remember to test your water pressure before you buy. Most RO systems need 40 to 50 psi to work. Mine was around 55 so no booster pump needed. Overall, great little well built system.

Watts Premier RO-Pure 4-Stage Reverse Osmosis System Review

Watts Premier RO-Pure 4-Stage Reverse Osmosis System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our municipal water is horrible. It smells like a swimming pool and is very hard.

I purchased this unit from Costco not Amazon. When I pulled it out of the box I started to think that it was going to be complicated to install. The well written directions made it easy to install the unit. All of the connections except for the water supply are quick connect which are secure and easy to make.

After the unit was installed and I opened up the water supply I could hear the water gurgling and the waste of the RO running down the drain. The directions call for draining the first tank of water which I did.The second tank that we sampled was the best water I've ever had from home. It is far better than a Britta pitcher. It has a crisp, clean taste without any chlorine smell.

I let my kids sample the difference by trying 2 cups, one from the faucet, one from the filter. My 9 year old son didn't even need to drink to tell the difference.Once he took a taste of the unfiltered tap water, he pushed it away and said it was horrible. He hung on to the filtered water.

Now we can refill reusable bottles and I don't have to haul cases of bottled water home.It is better for the environment and much cheaper. We are drinking more water rather than soda because it tastes good and is easy to get to.

Another added benefit is that I put a tee in the connection as the instruction described and routed the water to my Samsung Fridge. The Samsung water filters cost about $40 plus shipping from Amazon. Now I can stop buying these filters every six months. The quality of the water from the Watts filter is much better than the Samsung filter.

The only negative part of the install is that the storage tank takes up a fair space under the sink. The directions say that you can put the filter/storage up to 25 feet away with 1/4 inch line or further with a 3/8's line.In reality the space under the sink was taken up with a bunch of junk that we never used and having good water at the sink is a much better use of the space.

UPDATE 4-10: Someone contacted me through my Samsung fridge filter review and pointed out to me that Reverse Osmosis can waste a high ratio (1:3) to (1:5) of water make its final product. You can hear the water running down the drain after you use the faucet. The sound bothers my wife so I put the drain plug in as a mute.I am considering running a line to my drip sprinkler system.

5 Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filter System With Storage Tank Removes Fluoride Review

5 Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filter System With Storage Tank Removes Fluoride
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This seems to be a great RO system once you figure out how to install it...The instructions that come with it are pretty poor.If you aren't familiar with a modest amount of plumbing, have someone else install it for you.

A few clues to make this go easier for you:

Not all the fittings that come with the system will necessarily work with YOUR current plumbing.

The color coded tubes didn't match the instructions. This doesn't matter EXCEPT FOR ONE: there is one tube with a little restricted fitting inserted. This is for your waste line.IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO GET THE SYSTEM TO OPERATE!This is what creates the back pressure for the system.

Looking from the front,
Your water input to the filter (from your cold water line) goes to the bottom right fitting (into the first big filter, it is labeled "IN" above the fitting.
Just above that is a "T" fitting, the open port goes to your tank.
They send a shutoff valve that goes on top of the tank that the nylon tube goes into.
On the left side of the membrane (lower horizontal cylinder) are 2 fittings, one used already, the other one goes to your drain (use the saddle valve provided).
The last tube goes on the left side of the top cylinder (your final filter) goes to your faucet.

Tips for your waste line:
IF you use an air gap faucet (required in some places, prevents drain backups from going into the RO system), the drain restrictor won't fit on the faucet end so turn the tube around and have the restrictor in the fitting towards the RO membrane. To use an air gap faucet, you will need to do some creative plumbing to get the different size tube from the faucet to your drain. There are 3 ports on the faucet (1 on a normal faucet), 1 for clean water from your final filter, 1 normal sized coming from your membrane, and one larger tube to go to your drain.I got my faucet at my local plumbing supply house.(Home Depot didn't have one). The air gap faucet does "burble" for a while after using the water but I consider it a small price to pay to make sure my system stays clean.

Tips for starting up your system:
When I first connected my system, I connected the water line to the input.I disconnected the tube from the leftmost carbon filter and attached a different tube and ran it into my sink.I turned the water on and flushed the excess carbon out of the filters for 5 minutes. This way all that carbon didn'tget into my tank and RO membrane.I have no evidence, but I believe this will extend the life of my membrane a little. After connecting everything, I turned the system on and nothing came out.It took about 10-20 minutes for the system to build enough pressure to come out of the faucet.I followed the instructions and ran about 10 gallons through the final filter before using the water.

I also added a quick connect "T" in the line going to my faucet AFTER flushing the system of carbon and ran one side to my faucet and the other to my refrigerator so I have clean ice and cold water.I did the flush first so I wouldn't have to flush the carbon through my ice maker for who knows how long. When I replace the final carbon filter, I will disconnect my fridge until after I flush it again.

Also, since you are stripping your water of most or all of the minerals, please get some good quality liquid trace minerals to add back in with every glass you drink. Our bodies are meant to get a significant amount of minerals from our water.

Enjoy!

Watts WP5-50 Premier Five-Stage Manifold Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System Review

Watts WP5-50 Premier Five-Stage Manifold Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For an aspiring indoor hydroponic vegetable gardener like Your Humble Narrator, a source of clean water is essential. Here in suburban Salt Lake City, we are blessed with some of the dirtiest water in the country. Using this meter: pH-EC-TDS Meter my tap water clocks in with a pH of 8.2-8.4 and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading of 300-350 ppm (parts per million). This review specifically addresses the suitability of the Watts WP5-50 reverse osmosis system to the task of providing a water supply for the home hydroponic gardener.
I've used other filtration devices, like straight carbon filters, and have been disappointed. Yes, they do remove sediment and some contaminants, however the drinking water never genuinely tasted "clean". Moreover, taking the testing meter to this water, and the TDS reading never went below 280 ppm which is unacceptable for hydroponic growing. After doing some research, I concluded that the only option was reverse osmosis.

Package Inspection

Out of the box everything looked okay with the exception of the faucet, which, as other reviewers have noted, is a cheaper version of the displayed product.

Installation

Installation was straightforward. The instructions, while not written by an English professor were sufficient albeit vague in a few critical places. I had the unit installed within two hours.

Waste Water, Output Water Quality and Quantity

My three biggest concerns with this product are output water quality, output water quantity and waste water production. Bear in mind that all of these are dependent upon the quality and pressure of your incoming water supply, which can change from season to season as well as from one time of day to another. Take a certain degree of comfort in knowing that my incoming water is probably worse than yours.

I have not yet connected the waste water tube to the sink's drain. Rather, the waste water tube is currently draining into an 18-gallon bucket so I can take measurements for the purposes of this review. To leave this setup in this manner is a code violation. I suggest that you connect your unit properly.

The amount of waste water this unit produces is staggering. For each gallon of clean water, I produce an additional 6.5 gallons of waste water. I have come to understand that I will experience a similar ratio regardless of the reverse osmosis unit I use. This phenomenon is a consequence of RO technology in general rather than a peculiarity of this particular unit. As I've suggested, the amount of waste water produced is proportional to how contaminated your incoming water supply is.

The output water quality is excellent. TDS (total dissolved solids) are 15-20 ppm, which is ideal for hydroponic growing. Any purer than that brings you into the realm of distilled water, which would need to be supplemented with minerals to be suitable for hydroponic use. Output water quantity is sufficient although disappointing. It produces one gallon in about 90 minutes. Higher water pressure and cleaner incoming water will decrease this time. The storage tank, although it has a physical capacity of three gallons, drains to empty after drawing two gallons. I consider this is a consequence of the technology, not a case of misleading advertising.

Summary

The Watts WP5-50 reverse osmosis water treatment system is well suited to the task of providing contaminant-reduced water for the purposes of hydroponic growing. It produces clean water in sufficient quantity for the purposes of a home hydroponic garden. Insofar as the waste water is concerned, for the time being, I'm leaving the waste tube in that eighteen gallon bucket. I'm using that water for my lawn.

June 20, 2009 - Important Update

Several weeks ago, our city's water changed for the worse. I'm assuming that it's because of a switchover to summertime procedures where water consumption is considerably heavier. Incoming water is now 800-900 ppm of Total Dissolved Solids. The unit's output water quality is 80-100 ppm which is still in the "good" range. It now produces roughly twelve gallons of waste water for each gallon of clean water is generates. The lesson here is that water quality can dramatically change from one season to another, as well as from one time of day to another.

Five-Stage Filtration Removes Contaminants
The Watts RO filters in five stages to ensure that your drinking water is as healthy and clean as possible. Once the system is connected, water passes through a 5-micron sediment filter that traps particulate matter--such as dirt, rust, and silt--that can affect the taste and appearance of your water. Next, a 5-micron carbon block filter reduces chlorine taste and odor, as well as other materials that can give water a bad taste. For the third stage, another 5-micron carbon block filter further reduces chlorine, as well as difficult-to-remove chloramines.
Reverse Osmosis for High-Quality Drinking Water
The system's fourth stage of filtration is especially important, as it involves the passage of water through the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. This semi-permeable membrane effectively removes arsenic, lead, perchlorate, chromium, copper, TDS (total dissolved solids), sodium, and a long list of other water contaminants. It also removes parasytic cysts, such as giardia and cryptosporidia.
The fifth stage of filtration utilizes a high quality GAC filter, which works as a final polishing filter when the water leaves the storage tank on its way up to your faucet. The end result is consistently great-tasting water at just pennies per gallon.
The Importance of Drinking Clean Water
Water is critical to proper food digestion, kidney health, brain function, blood health, joint functionality, and more. It's important to make sure that the water you drink is devoid of contaminants. Thankfully, using a Watts water filtration device will ensure consistent quality for all of your drinking and cooking needs. In fact, when you use Watts' high-quality certified water treatment devices and filters, your water will be free of chlorine taste and odors, particles, and many other contaminants that can be detrimental to your health.

An Eco-Friendly Choice
Not only is the RO filter a healthy choice for you, but it's also a healthy choice for the environment. This filter helps you minimize the harmful environmental consequences of buying bottled water. Incredibly, if a mere ten percent of North America's bottled water intake were reduced by switching to home-filtered water in reusable containers, we could eliminate:

133,000 trucks driving an average of 500 miles--saving nearly 12 million gallons of diesel fuel
Over 100 million pounds of greenhouse gasses--equal to taking 1,100 cars off the road annually
213 million pounds of PET--equal to 1.5 million barrels of crude oil or improving the PET recycling rate by 10%

Depending upon which Watts water-filtration product you use, you can prevent up to 16,000 half-liter bottles from being deposited in landfills--all in the time it takes to use and replace a single filter.
The Watts Premier Five Stage Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Device is backed by a three-year limited warranty.
