We were recently in England and saw friends using an electric tea kettlethat was different than any we had ever seen in the U.S. I had to have one. When we got home I found this lovely Braun electric kettle and purchasedit immediately. It does all we expected. It has a large capacity so youdon't have to refill it constantly. It boils very, very quickly and shutsoff so I don't have to watch it.I love being able to take it to the sinkto fill it without dragging the cord. It's very easy to clean because itdetaches from the base.I like the large handle grip and the water windowon both sides. We use it for everything instant including soup. How didwe get along without it?

Toastmaster Classic 1.5L Electric Cordless Jug Kettle Review

The tea kettle will have to do, until I can find a better one. It is very, very slow in boiling water. I can brush my teeth, wash my face, cut an apple and the water has not boiled. At the begining this did not bother me , but now I can't stand the slowness of it any longer. I REALLY HATE IT. I have been reading all of the reviews on electric cordless kettles and every kettle has some flaw. I asked myself (WHY) If there is the perfect tea kettle out there let me know, ( ILL BUY IT.)

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric Kettle Review

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this product and I use it nearly every day - it goes well with a french press, and heating water to 200 deg F is its primary function. At other times I used it to help a large pot of water (for cooking pasta) come to a boil much sooner.

Things to note:
- The brushed exterior is convenient, it doesn't pick up smudges like a polished one would

- The 2qt capacity is great when boiling water for a larger pot

- It's fast. It gets water to a boil very quickly, especially if you don't fill the whole pot - 1qt will boil really quickly, not just in half the time of 2qts

- The indicator window gets steamed and is barely of use. OK, I see how much to not fill it (Max line)

- The switch appears flimsy but there's not much to stress it

- A subtle red light indicates the switch is on. Initially I used to leave the switch on after pouring out the water, but now I know what to look for. At this point I don't regret that it could have been brighter, because it stays subtle in the kitchen. In a multi-user kitchen you might want to mention that the ON indication is very low-key.

- When boiling, the kettle takes a bit more delay than I'd expect to switch off and indicate the water's boiling (with a quiet click). By that time the sound of bubbling alerts me

- I haven't detected any weird smell, I did two boils with fresh water before using it

- The spout is definitely designed for slow pouring. It doesn't spill a drop. However, if you're trying to dump the water out really fast, like into a large pot, slow down or you'll get a trickle down the sides because the spout won't handle the volume

- There's a fine mesh filter across the spout to catch any scaling if it ever occurs (not seen it yet but I have an undersink filter) and I remove that to stick a thermometer to catch it short of boiling. Would have been nice to get something where I could simply set the temperature rather than monitor the kettle - but that would be a different product altogether.

- The lid is nice, opens gently

- I wondered whether I could heat vegetable stock in it, but I think that better be left to the 670 or 675 that you see on Good Eats - the electric hot pot that looks like a kettle but with perfectly vertical sides. This has a tube in it and its shape won't lend well to thorough cleaning. I'll stick to water.

- It feels like it sits loose on the base, but that's what makes it easy to pick up and put down. The base doesn't get lifted with the kettle, so it's nice in that. The cord is solid and has a three-pronged plug at the end.

All in all, it feels solid and can do what it's supposed to do. I fault it a star for trickling when I try to pour the water very quickly, and for the odd placing of the level indicator, the difficulty of being able to reach in and deep clean anything. I'd probably give it 4 1/2 stars if that was possible.

Hamilton Beach 42115 3-in-1 Hot-Beverage Center, Black Review

Hamilton Beach 42115 3-in-1 Hot-Beverage Center, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is replacing a 4 cup Melitta coffeemaker (couldn't find a replacement carafe that would fit the brewer, which sat atop the pot).
This appealed to me in that this product has the following good features:

1) no pot/carafe to crack or clean
2) no waste (since you didn't have to brew 1-3 cups to get 1 decent sized mug + waste)
3) no hot plate/pot to turn off - nothing to worry about if you started a brew and then were unexpectedly called away or forgot about it
4) no paper filters required (but see below)
5) looks interesting - doesn't look like a coffee maker, takes up less space on counter, easier to keep clean.

I read some reviews - good and bad- and decided to get it anyway. AM SO GLAD I DID- I REALLY LIKE THIS THING!

Reasons:1)-4) above, plus:
5) water resevoir + filter assembly is dishwasher safe (top rack)
6) capability of using pods (I wasn't about to buy an expensive 'pod-processor', so this is a very nice 'perk' - pun intended! ;o)

Very easy- load it up, walk away, come back to beverage.Lovely!

Some tips to head off any/all problems-

1) Read the manual.Hey, things happen, but really - use COLD WATER ONLY.

2) If brewing multiple cups- WAIT AT LEAST 30 SECS after light goes off before starting another brew.To be safe, I wait a full minute- have not had any problems.

3) I could see the potential for 'filter fouling', so I buy generic #4 Melitta filters (huge pack can be bought for <$2/pk) (& since #1s are almost impossible to find/expensive).I cut them down to fit the little filter basket, and I can go back n forth from tea to coffee to hot cocoa to soup without carryover effects (dump out coffee & rinse assembly after coffee).
4) Be careful with pushing down on plastic parts- again- read the manual. You might have to double-check to be sure that the water resevoir is pushed in all the way some times (it happened to me once).Use the handle/flap assembly to open/close the filter assembly - this is covered in the manual.

I agree- it would be nice if this were made more robustly (less plastic), and I do worry about the ability to get a replacement brew basket if need be. But I paid less than $20 for this (at Meijer), so can't complain.

Quick & Hot Instant 190 Hot Water Dispenser CHROME Review

Quick & Hot Instant 190 Hot Water Dispenser CHROME
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this item (earlier model) for at least 6 years and have never had a problem with it.It works perfectly all the time; water is always instant and HOT (note: temperature is adjustable).I just did a partial remodel of my kitchen and have to replace the garbage disposal and hot water per the plumber in order for his work to be guaranteed--rip off, I say,as they both work perfectly.

After looking at the Insinkerator and one other model model from the local big box stores, I am going to purchase this brand instead. The faucet is better--the Insinkerator lever was a tiny piece of black plastic--very obviously will break easily. It also looks great with the new kitchen faucet I purchased.

One last comment:The housing on this brand is not as bulky as one I previewed at Lowes (or was it Home Depot?).It fits better under my smaller 30" sink cabinet.

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle Review

Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most importantly, my wife loves it, and she is a gadget-phobe.I just bought a second one for my mother.

We have been using it for two months now, and no problems so far.

After my usual exhaustive search, I selected this tea kettle because it had the best combination of features.

PRO:
- All metal: stainless steel liner and no exposed heating element to accumulate scale buildup. The lid is plastic but it doesn't come into contact with the water.I really didn't like the idea of boiling water in contact with plastic.
- Cool touch exterior for safety and also it insulates the water inside, keeping it hotter after the kettle shuts off upon boiling.
- Nice balance for the handle - I find the electric kettles with the handle on the top to be much more difficult to lift and pour. This one has the handle on the side - much better.
- Wide mouth top is easy to fill and clean. The lid pivots in the middle - too hard to describe so I added a clip from the user manual.Easy to remove lid to clean, though as others mentioned it does get in the way a bit when you're filling the kettle.
- As with many other kettles, it is cordless -- the kettle lifts easily off and on from the corded base, and you can hide any extra power cord inside the base.

CON (none of these matter to me or my wife):
- No water level indication, but then if there were you would probably have connections that could leak over time and potentially plastic parts in contact with water.
- Water temperature is not adjustable.

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black Review

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.

I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)

The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).

Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.

It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.

Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.

Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

Krups FLF2-J4 Cordless Electric 54-Ounce Water Kettle, Black Review

Krups FLF2-J4 Cordless Electric 54-Ounce Water Kettle, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The kettle's appearance is nice. It has high power and boils fast. Due to design of the lid the water is tightly covered so there is less evaporation.
Here are the problems.

1) The stainless floor becomes spotted and uneven really fast (faster than with my previous Braun kettle).

2) On my first unit power switch was malfunctioning. It took me 2-3-4 attempts before I could start it. I replaced the kettle with a new one and had the very same problems.

The bottom line.
If you decide to buy, don't do it online. Buy at some place where you can easily replace the kettle if the first (second, third etc.) one is defective.

I decided to return this kettle and buy Braun for the same price.Update 08/08/2008
After half a year I decided to give it another try and bought a new black Krups Kettle from Bad Bath And Beyond again. I hoped that they produced a new batch with the known defect fixed. Nothing has improved. The third kettle is also defective in exactly the same way - power switch doesn't work properly and turns the kettle off several seconds after turning on.

This is one of the few electric kettles I found with no plastic under the water line--although it does have a silicone gasket between the glass and metal parts. It boils fast and is reasonably easy to clean.

HOWEVER, it has a fatal flaw. The non-detachable mesh screen connected to the lid is not stainless steel. It visibly rusted within a week of purchasing the product.I called Aroma (the manufacturer) and they sent me a replacement, which started to visibly rust in 24 hours! This is not okay.Any metal in the product should be food grade stainless steel.

Nice blue led when in operation
Surprsingly quieter then Krups
Beeps when ready
Keeps it warm for 30 minuites
Faster tea preparation when selecting lower temps
Cap opens with a push of a button (Krups had a twist off)

Neutral:
Price for some
Some plastic there, but not too much

Cons:
They didn't make one 4 years ago
Stains on Stainless Steel alreadyTime will tell, but so far I haven't found a better option amongst all electric kettles.

InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System Review

InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Insinkerator product suffers from a couple of inexcusable design flaws.Like many here I found a puddle of water under my unit about two years after installing it.Checked into buying a new unit, but at $200 I wasn't going to give in easily. After reading other folks' experience with the unit I opened mine up and found the obvious source of the leak. There is a 1/4" plastic vent hose than helps handle the return hot water after you release the faucet handle.Since it'sa non-pressurized unit, all water in the line up to faucet gets returned to the tank after you release the faucet handle. This hose, combined with a plastic overflow tank handles the water return. The root cause of the leaking problem is that Insinkerator uses standard clear vinyl plastic tubing for this one part -- the same kind you would use for supplying air in a home aquarium. At the hardware store they warn you not to use it even for ice maker supply lines, but some genius at Insinkerator specified it for use in an enclosed water heater. It's speced at a max temp of 175F, but in the hot water heater it sits at near 200F, 24/7/365, and it can't handle it.Mine had turned a dark brown to nearly black color and had completely failedwhere the hose was routed right along the stainless steel tank.Every time we used the heater the return water ended up in our cabinet. For lack of another 25 cents worth of the correct material, customers everywhere are replacing their tanks prematurely. And the fix is so simple there's no excuse for Insinkerator not doing it.

HOW TO REPAIR:Basically you have to replace the hose with the right kind, and fortunately it's pretty easy.I recommend silicone tubing (rated to 500F), and you'll need some with 1/8" inside diameter.I bought some from an Amazon seller, 1/8" ID and 3/8" OD with thick 1/8" walls.Search on Amazon and you'll find what I'm talking about.(Edit: The original tubing is 3/16" ID but I went with 1/8 for a good snug fit.3/16" ID tubing will also work quite well, and is what I would recommend at this point if you can find it.)Unfortunately it's only sold in 10' lengths, and you need less than a foot.I have extra left over if anyone's interested (email me at pbj1959 at gmail dot com).If you can find it locally, all the better. For good measure get a couple of small plastic zip ties (cable ties) or the proper sized spring clamp to secure the new tubing.

1) Unplug, drain, and remove the tank. After unplugging the power cord, run water thru the unit till cold water flows out the faucet. Then place a large bowl (1-gallon capacity minimum) under the tank, unscrew the drain screw, and let the tank drain into the bowl.If you can easily shut off the water supply do it now, but it is not necessary as long as no one uses the faucet when you are working on the tank. While draining, remove the three tubes from the top of the tank. One has a spring loaded clip you need to depress to remove the tube and the other two are silicone and plastic tubes that just pull off (might vary a bit based on the age of your unit).Loosen the mounting screws, and when the tank has drained, remove it from your cabinet and find a water resistant place to work on it.

2) Disassemble the tank.Really easy -- there is a small screw on the top that holds the two sides of the plastic shell together ... remove it.The two sides of the shell pull apart fairly easily but you might need to muscle it a bit.Once you get them apart, remove them from the unit and place aside. Then remove the temperature dial and put it aside. At this point you will have the guts of the unit with the steel tank encased in a dense styrofoam shell.Take a minute to examine the way it's put together (pictures wouldn't hurt either). You'll most probably easily pick out the problem part -- it will probably be very dark and brittle, and one end will be attached to the side of the water inlet port.Cut the hose somewhere before the metal (maybe plastic on yours) water inlet port it attaches to, and you will then be able to remove the upper styrofoam shell. After that you will see where the other end of the defective hose goes -- the bottom of the plastic overflow tank. You will need to cut the old zip ties (or maybe spring clamps) at each end of the hose to fully remove the old hose.See what a piece of crap it is?Why they would use that kind of plastic is beyond me.

3) Inspect and dry the full unit. You may want at this point to remove the other styro shell piece and completely dry everything. At this point I discovered that the leaking water has badly rusted several of the screws holding the two pieces of the stainless tank together.Really Insinkerator??A stainless tank but regular steel screws??That's the second design flaw I mentioned earlier.I wasn't sure whether or not the rust has led to any leak in the tank itself, so I disassembled the stainless tank (fun to do with rusted screws I'll tell you).Mine took a T-10 Torx driver for the screws, and I eventually got them all out.A trip to the hardware store got me some #6 x 3/4" stainless machine screws and lock nuts.If you see anything else besides the hose that could be a problem, you'll need to deal with it for a complete repair.

4)Reassemble the unit, installing the new hose as you go.Put the tank back in the bottom styro shell.Attach one end of the silicone hose to the plastic overflow tank and secure with a zip tie cutting off the excess tie.Put the plastic tank back in the upper styro shell and slide the two back onto the top of the stainless tank. The plastic tank lines up with the silicone hose to the front of the unit. You'll route the hose along the tank flange to the right of the unit just like the old hose was.Once the shell is as far down as it goes, route the hose along the side of the styro shell following the groove for the old hose (not a perfect fit, but that's OK) and then over the top to the water inlet port.Hold it in place and see where you need to cut the silicone hose to fit the port without excess slack in the hose. Then cut the hose, attach it to the port and secure with a zip tie.Replace the thin upper piece of styro over the top of it all and reassemble it all into the plastic shell.Take your time and work the two halves together, making sure to get the power cord grommet correctly into the cutout in the shell.Get the bottom together first then work your way up.Pay attention to the new hose, keeping it tucked in behind the side of the front half of the shell (don't let it end up stuffed behind the back half of the shell. When done properly the shell will snap together nicely, and you may note a slight bulge where the new hose is if you used the thicker silicone tubing like me -- that's OK.Put the small screw back into the top the shell, and reinsert the drain screw.

5) Reinstall and test tank.Just reverse the removal steps.Open the faucet until water flows before plugging the tank in.Then use the faucet normally, checking regularly for any leaks.Mine has been leak free for two weeks, and should last for years now.

That's it, and it's probably easier than it sounds. For a grand total of less than $25 (with nine feet of hose left over) I have a fully functional tank again. The rest of the unit is very well made, so I expect it to last years.Good luck with your home repair efforts. It's only a matter of time before it will be necessary with this product.

UPDATE 9/13/2010:A couple months now and still no leaks.I've been corresponding with another unhappy owner who ended up getting a replacement from Insinkerator. He sent me pics (thanks Jay!) that show they have changed the design of this particular tube that has been causing so many problems. The new design uses a different type of plastic for the tubing and avoids routing it along the steel hot water tank. They also seemed to have added a different type of gasket between the two tank halves. From what I saw, new units with this design won't suffer the same problem I described above, but how to tell whether any one new unit purchased at retail will have this fix incorporated??

We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.
It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.
HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the 'on' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn't worth the effort.
I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.

This Electric Kettle is quitesimple without any frills. For the price, it does what it claims to do. It boils water quickly , the water level is easy to see and has the auto-shut off feature. I have used it reliablyto boil water for tea, oatmeal etc. The water is quite hot, so use caution when pouring it out. The lid , can sometimes be hard to close & open.
