Cat It Fresh and Clear Drinking Fountain for Cats and Puppies - Cat It 50050 Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Catit Dome Waterer thinking that, with multiple cats, it would be easier than refilling a small water dish a couple of times a day.The notion of fresh, filtered water also appealed to me. I was so wrong.

The fountain is supposed to work like this:a dome-shaped reservoir holds fresh water.It releases the water into the base as necessary, whereupon an electric pump will pump said water over the top of the dome for your cats to lick.You'll know when the water level is low because the pump begins to gurgle and sputter (and if you let it gurgle too long the pump burns out).The water is kept fresh by a replacable charcoal filter in the base.

Here is why I strongly suggest that you not waste your money like I did:

First, I'm not convinced the cats love it.I say this because mine still prefer the toilet (if the lid is up) even when this fountain running.

Second, the charcoal filter is supposed to be replaced every 2 weeks ($3 each).There's nothing economical about that.

Furthermore, even though there is a charcoal filter, the base still gets slimy. So you have to unplug it and wipe down the surface of the base (every nook and cranny) weekly if you want your cat to have fresh water.

Also, despite the filter, fur still gets into the base.It collects on the pump intake and prevents it from pumping water, so the unit effectively stops working.However, when the unit is running properly it's silent, and when it clogs w/fur it's also silent, so unless you're looking carefully, you may not realize that it's not pumping water.Dehydrated cats = not good.It's an easy fix (unplug it, remove the dome, and wipe the fur off the side of the pump), but it's another not-so-pleasant "feature" of the fountain.

And finally, the reason this product drives me positively bonkers: it works more in theory than in practice.

My reservoir will only drain into the base if the base is bone-dry.If there's any water in it, the reservoir won't drain (and yes, it's assembled properly).However, the pump gurgles when the base is 1/2 full.So when my pump gurgles, and the reservoir is virtually full, I pour a glass of water over the dome and it runs into the base and solves the problem.The issue is that 1) it gurgles *loudly*, and 2)I have to do this FOUR TIMES A DAY.Last night it woke me up, and I stumbled into the kitchen at 3am to pour a glass of water over the stupid thing to get it to stop making noise so I could go back to sleep.Lovely - interrupted sleep from a *cat fountain.*

I feel like I'm at war with a noisy plastic piece of garbage in my kitchen - and I'm clearly losing.

Yes - all fountains get slimy despite the charcoal filter, and all fountains make noise when the water runs low.But I've never had one that won't drain properly, that gurgles so frequently, and that gurgles so loudly that it's audible across the house.

This is not an inexpensive unit.There are better products out there on which you can spend your money.Choose an alternative -- don't choose this one!

(More customer reviews)We have 3 labs and have tried just about every waterer on the market.I hated every one of them until we found the Dogit!With this design, instead of the big drinking area that the water pours into there is a very small drinking area which means that you don't have dirt and hair falling into the bowl like you do with most others.Not only that, butwhere the dog drinks from is raised, which helps with dogs who tend to drink too fast and then yack up the water minutes later.The other units would have to be filled almost daily.This baby holds a lot of water.The one person said the inside of the bowl gets dirty, but with three labs that love the mud as much as ours do I can say that we've never had any problem with the bowl getting dirty.Seriously, I cannot say enough good things about this unit.Everyone that has seen it has loved it.It's quiet compared to others, it's sooooo much cleaner, and it holdsmore than most others.If your dogs have a drinking problem like ours do or you are just tired of waterers that are dirty and nasty looking after 1 day... do yourself a HUGE favor and buy this fountain!

(More customer reviews)Call me crazy but I honestly thought the foam piece that came with the fountain was a packaging thing! I read the directions, but apparently skipped that page or something (LOL!) and it wasn't until I had to order filter refills that I saw these again and then realized my mistake.
These foamy pieces extend the life of the carbon filters in the water fountain AND seriously cut down on the amount of pet hair that gets into the pump and filter- I can't imagine not using it!
These last quite a long time as long as you're gentle with them when you clean them off, I think I've used the same one for about six months now and it looks as clean and nice as it did when I bought it.
Not to sound gross but I have picked some nasty looking pet hair gobs off of it, thankful that they didn't get a chance to stick to the filter, pump or worse, stay in the water!
Overall, this is, I think, a must for any DogIt owner who wants to preserve the longevity of their pet water fountain, you don't want a burnt out pump because of a hairy, gummed up filter!

(More customer reviews)My 4 cats love this fountain and they drink a lot more water now. Depending upon how you have the flow lever adjusted, the water stream can either be silent or a gentle trickle noise.

I have had 3 of these fountains in 3 years. The only problem I have had is with the pump. Like any water pump, the water level must be above the pump so the pump will not be damaged. I burnt out the first pump this way (shame on me). The second pump became severely clogged and stopped when one cat vomited grass into the dish while I was away (naughty kitty). The third pump dying is a mystery to me. It wasn't even a year old. Unfortunately, I just returned it today before reading one reviewer's directions on taking the pump apart for cleaning.

Even with the pump issue, I'll buy this product again. The cats love it, it is easy to clean, and fresh water is good for my cats' health. By the way, I can't imagine how some people are getting algae, etc., with this system. Basic cleaning is required of any food or water dish. The only part of this unit that cannot be cleaned with a sponge is a narrow plastic funnel that brings the water up to the fountain head. A Q-Tip works great for cleaning that.

(More customer reviews)I have been using the fountain for a few weeks now.
It holds 2.5 gallons of water, I use bottled water to fill it because that's what we drink, so I'm not worried about the filter replacement.In fact.. I don't think the filter is all that useful or purposeful. (A regular charcoal filter that the water flows around) honestly.. I don't think I'll every buy a replacement.. using bottled water as I said I feel it's not really necessary!

Once a week I clean it out.. I did not buy the cleaning kit, again doesn't seem necessary.I use the hose sprayer on my small kitchen sink to turn it upside down in and spray every crack & crevice with our hottest tap water setting for a few minutes.Works great, no scrubbing necessary.

The flow rate adjustment is great too.. fast flow or slow.. .the slow setting makes the least water trickling sound, we don't even hear it, and the fast is like any soothing home water fountain.

2.5 gallons lasts our pack of 2 medium 1 large dogs, and 2 housecats about 1 week.. I may add a little to the bowl before the week is over now that its summer but not much.I let it run down a bit low and then clean it.

I would recommend buying it, and may buy another for our covered outside area as well.

Drinkwell Pet Fountain Cleaning Kit Review

(More customer reviews)My complaint for these brushes is the poor product design, specifically, with the tips of the biggest and the smallest brushes. To clean around all the sharp corners well, it is important for the tips of these brushes to be covered with a lot of bristles. Guess what, the tip of the smallest brush is prety much dominated by the metal wires, so when you try to clean, instead of getting the bristles to touch and rub against the surfaces, it's mostly the metal wires that come into contact. Last time I checked, it's the bristles that clean, not the metal wire. Same with the biggest brush: The way the metal wires wrap around the sponge tip to hold it to the handle prevents the sponge from coming into full contact with the surfaces.

The product designers for the brushes don't deserve to be product designers. Do you know how much it takes to design a simple floor mop? A lot. A good product designer has to think about which yarn absorbs water well, how much water to absorb so the mop won't be hard to wring, what wringing mechanism to use, how long the handle should be, how thick the handle should be, how the mop head comes into contact with the floor, and so forth, in order to maximize ease of use and effectiveness.

The designers of the brushes are a failure. It seems that not much thought went into the design. Yes, we are dealing with just brushes, but even brushes should do the job they are supposed to do well.

Petmate Fresh Flow Filter Refill Review

(More customer reviews)To my mind, there is little more annoying than when a company trots out an "upgrade" product that turns out to be much worse than the original.

These filters render the fountains UNUSABLE in my area (yes, 'tis likely different areas are prone to different microorganisms which may be handled more or less effectively by different products).I get algae sliming up the works within one or two days.God knows what kind of bacteria are thriving in commensal or symbiotic relationships with this algal slime...

I am back to running my faucets day-and-night because my cats will not drink out of bowls.They USED to love drinking out of the Pet Fountain, but will not use it for more than a day or two after it has been fully disassembled and cleaned with bleach.

A few quality control tests would have easily allowed the manufacturer to realize what we have all realized... this product is completely ineffective and a wretched down-grade from the previously-supported filter.

Whoever was involved in developing this product has brought ignominious disgrace upon a formerly beloved company...

(More customer reviews)I disagree with M&M's review about the filters lasting no more than 1 day.That hasn't been my experience at all.Make sure they get loaded with the black side facing the front of the fountain, and the narrower edge goes in first.Also, it's important to rinse the filter with cold water before inserting.This will get rid of any loose carbon dust.The manual explains all this.

According to the manual, 1 filter should last 6-8 weeks, depending on your pump speed and how quickly your animal(s) go through the water.I change mine every 2 months, sometimes longer.Now, I *clean* the whole fountain every 5-6 days, taking apart the whole thing, dumping out the old water, giving it a good scrubbing with soap and hot water.I take the lid off first, clean it, and rest the filter on the lid while I clean the rest of the fountain.Then I put the same filter back in, unless it's due for a change.

$10 for a 3-pack that lasts 6 months is a good deal to me.Don't know how the other user had such problems with grime and slime.It's important to clean the fountain regularly is all I can think of.
