The Auto Pet Waterer provides filtered clean sparkling water so pets drink more fresh water. Auto Pet Waterer has high capacity storage unlike other units in the market. The medium Pet waterer/water fountain is available in a 3 gallon size. The unit consists of a storage container and pet bowl with a recalculating pump. The pump re-circulates the water from the bowl through a disposable 8 layer filter. A patented forced aeration (forced induction of air into water) system within the recirculation system reduces pet saliva contamination and aerates the water continuously. Hence, the waterer does not rely on water splatter to induce oxygen in the water. This in conjunction with the 8 layer filter provides for a sparkling crystal clear fresh flow of oxygenated running water to the bowl/fountain which eliminates algae formation in the bowl. This results in reduce urinary tract infection for the pets and keeps the pet hydrated. (More customer reviews)I bought the Catit Dome Waterer thinking that, with multiple cats, it would be easier than refilling a small water dish a couple of times a day.The notion of fresh, filtered water also appealed to me. I was so wrong.

The fountain is supposed to work like this:a dome-shaped reservoir holds fresh water.It releases the water into the base as necessary, whereupon an electric pump will pump said water over the top of the dome for your cats to lick.You'll know when the water level is low because the pump begins to gurgle and sputter (and if you let it gurgle too long the pump burns out).The water is kept fresh by a replacable charcoal filter in the base.

Here is why I strongly suggest that you not waste your money like I did:

First, I'm not convinced the cats love it.I say this because mine still prefer the toilet (if the lid is up) even when this fountain running.

Second, the charcoal filter is supposed to be replaced every 2 weeks ($3 each).There's nothing economical about that.

Furthermore, even though there is a charcoal filter, the base still gets slimy. So you have to unplug it and wipe down the surface of the base (every nook and cranny) weekly if you want your cat to have fresh water.

Also, despite the filter, fur still gets into the base.It collects on the pump intake and prevents it from pumping water, so the unit effectively stops working.However, when the unit is running properly it's silent, and when it clogs w/fur it's also silent, so unless you're looking carefully, you may not realize that it's not pumping water.Dehydrated cats = not good.It's an easy fix (unplug it, remove the dome, and wipe the fur off the side of the pump), but it's another not-so-pleasant "feature" of the fountain.

And finally, the reason this product drives me positively bonkers: it works more in theory than in practice.

My reservoir will only drain into the base if the base is bone-dry.If there's any water in it, the reservoir won't drain (and yes, it's assembled properly).However, the pump gurgles when the base is 1/2 full.So when my pump gurgles, and the reservoir is virtually full, I pour a glass of water over the dome and it runs into the base and solves the problem.The issue is that 1) it gurgles *loudly*, and 2)I have to do this FOUR TIMES A DAY.Last night it woke me up, and I stumbled into the kitchen at 3am to pour a glass of water over the stupid thing to get it to stop making noise so I could go back to sleep.Lovely - interrupted sleep from a *cat fountain.*

I feel like I'm at war with a noisy plastic piece of garbage in my kitchen - and I'm clearly losing.

Yes - all fountains get slimy despite the charcoal filter, and all fountains make noise when the water runs low.But I've never had one that won't drain properly, that gurgles so frequently, and that gurgles so loudly that it's audible across the house.

This is not an inexpensive unit.There are better products out there on which you can spend your money.Choose an alternative -- don't choose this one!

(More customer reviews)The ERGO automatic filtered pet waterer is the best waterer I have ever purchased.The previous waterer was a Drinkwell Big Dog Waterer.It did not have the capacity the ERGO waterer has which is a big benefit considering I have two labrador retrievers.The ERGO waterer has a prefilter which keeps debris out of the pump.I have owned this waterer for almost a year and am still very satisfied with it.It is very easy to keep clean, much easier than the previous waterer.The pump is adjustable and has lasted longer than the one in the Drinkwell waterer.The only thing is the manual does not tell you to put water in the well were the filter is located.By doing this, the pump is primed much faster, ensuring the water circulates well.A small item compared to all the benefits of this waterer.

(More customer reviews)I use these filters on the large water fountain for my cat Wyatt. Without the filter, the water will become dirtier faster (mostly because of pieces of food he puts in there from the large automatic feeder).

FYI, these filters are shipped 2-per pack, something that isn't mentioned in the product description.

A unique 8-layer filter used in the Auto Pet waterer to ensure that the pet gets fully distilled and clear water to drink every time it drinks. The water from the bowl passes to the filter to remove all impurities like pet saliva, fur and other pollution found in the water. The water that passes out of the filter is crystal clear and free from impurities and odors. The filter has 8-layers the first layer consists of a mesh filter to trap solids. The second layer has small ceramic balls which effectively filter out heavy metals from the water. This is the primary layer, which enables the water to be more bioactive and hence precipitate the dissolved solids while passing through the activated carbon layer. The third layer also consists of a mesh filter to trap small solids. The fourth layer has activated carbon filter elements with silver ions to enable reduction of chlorine and remove any odors. This layer also enables precipitation of dissolved solids. The fifth layer has another mesh filter that traps smaller solids. The sixth layer has stone filter element to trap all precipitated solids and solids from entering the filter from the inlet. The water is clean when it exits from this element. The seventh layer has a mesh filter to trap the smallest solids and the eighth layer is a secondary layer of large ceramic balls to enable the water to be more bioactive after the activated carbon layer and stone filter have done their functions. The water passing through this layer makes the water bioactive and with the air pumped along with the water increases the oxygen content and hence makes the water taste better and healthier. This reduces the formation of algae and keeps the water fresh. These balls also contain the same elements as in layer 2.
