Black & Decker CMD3500MBT 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe Review

It's difficult trying to research coffee makers to purchase, I realized, after looking at various ones throughout Amazon.A few products had agreement in the quality, but for a lot, the reviews seemed to be all over the place. And the ones that seemed to have really decent reviews were a bit out of the range I wanted to spend on an office coffee pot. Then I discovered this Black & Decker one that had absolutely no reviews, was in the price range I was looking for and had all the extra features (like a thermal carafe) and decided, why not? It's been a good purchase so far.

Reviewing appliances like coffeemakers is a bit outside of my normal purview and most of what I'd write about (the features) are listed above, so I'm going to make this short and sweet. The thermal carafe works wonderfully and we typically brew a pot, bring the carafe into our section and it keeps hot for the morning. The last cup feels as warm as the first, which is nice. It's only an 8 cup carafe, which could be problematic for those looking for a big pot, but it's the perfect fit for us.

One feature not listed is that it uses a charcoal filtration system. This is good and bad.The good is the filtration is a nice feature and it comes with one little charcoal patch, but after reading through the manual, it looks like the only way to order more is to go directly to Black & Decker.I noticed that Amazon has the Black & Decker TWF50 Water Filter Basket & Replacement Filter for sale via some other vendors. It's not the same model number, but the picture looks exactly like the one used in this coffeemaker (minus the color) and the replacement filters will probably fit.Unfortunately, it could become a hassle for those who want to keep up with their filter (which needs to be replaced every 60 brews/2 months).

Looking at the other features, there's a digital clock, with a screen that indicates the coffee is fresh and ready, a mechanism to choose your coffee strength that definitely works as advertised, the ability to "sneak a cup," and the carafe (unlike others we've used) pours perfectly without making a mess. All of this comes in a stylish package complete with blue lights along the side where the water level is read.

This makes for an attractive package that works perfectly and has a lot of additional features.I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

The coffee maker itself works great but the carafe is absolutely the worst I have ever had.You need to have a kitchen towel under it or you had better pour your coffee over the sink.I have resorted to using a pitcher to fill the water reservoir instead of the carafe to avoid water all over the place but what do you do once the coffee is made?Anyway--I would not recommend this coffee maker.Definitely a waste of $50.00!!!!

I picked out this coffee maker because of a reasonable price and was a recommended best buy in Consumers Report magazine. I have only had a week or so and can't address long term reliability. What it does do is NOT DRIP! It does not drip when pouring from the glass pot to the water reservoir or when pouring coffee into a cup. I do NOT have to be extra careful when pouring. It also stops the coffee flow from the filter as soon as I pull the pot out and does NOT drip on the warmer. Again, do NOT have to be extra careful here. It also does NOT leak condensation out of the water reservoir top when lifting the lid. The condensation on the reservoir lid drips back into the reservoir when the lid is lifted. The time and delay brew functions ARE easy to set and work fine. The coffee brewed fairly quickly and did not overflow the filter to allow grounds into the pot. So far, I am very happy with a product that someone spent some time making user friendly and practical. This is a well engineered inexpensive product.

Black & Decker SDC740B SpaceMaker 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Black Review

Black & Decker SDC740B SpaceMaker 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had a few different black and decker under cabinet coffee pots over the years and they were overdue for an update on the overall look of the product.I give the basic design 5 stars in that, the look is more current and if you have had the older version, you do get more noticable increase of counter usability space with this model. On the other hand, there are some annoyances with this new version.(I'm keeping the coffee maker)

For the overall rating that I provided of 3 stars, here is why.

Installation Template... JOKE
Missing measurement legends so was not usable.I held the coffer maker up to the cabinet to determine where I wanted it to be installed, measured from a few places on the coffee pot and cabinet and used the hanging bracket of the coffee maker as the template (pencil through screw holes).

Installation Hardware... screws wrong size
This is a design problem in concept, while having a bag of a bunch of different sizes solves the problem, or in my case, a hacksaw solved the problem. The ultimate reason is that there is no gap between the end of the screw when installed and the coffee pot to slide on.In older models if the screw went into the nut and came out the otherside by a 1/4 of an inch it was fine.In this model the screw must not go much past being flush to the end of the nut.... which is nuts!

Water Reservior... nice idea, but has challenges
a) Since the reservoir has such a large surface area, providing an exact amount of water is not easy. When you set it on the counter and fill it, it doesn't sit flat, etc, etc.
b) The top of the reservior is removable in order to clean it out. When you have the water around 10 cups, or more likely 12 cups, this lid doesn't seal the water in very good for a short walk from the sink to the coffee maker. Not a big deal, not a lot of dripping, but you have to pay attention to it.

Sneak a cup...Twice now we have had coffee overflow out of the filter area. This was due to the sneak a cup braket not designed very well. When you put the coffee pot into the unit, it pushes on a little handle/arm... barely. This braket opens/closes a door on the bottom of the filter. If the coffee pot is slightly off being place in properly, plan on a nice clean up of coffee on the counter.I added a little bit of bulk to the face of the bracket and I think it will solve the problem.

Removing top bracket... Geez, one of the first steps in the installation is to remove the top mounting bracket/piece from the top of the coffee maker... OMG, my wife and I were playing tug-a-war to get that dumb thing off. This should NOT come pre-connected to the coffee maker.

Handling of Water reservior and Filter.Neither have a nice handle or way to grip them. The filter part is more awkward to hold than the resourvoir, but it should be looked at.

I know I listed several things, but from the things listed, I don't think they are show-stoppers, I'll be keeping the coffee maker.

Black & Decker Programmable Coffeemakers Review

The DCM2160 Coffeemaker has a few design issues.
1) The most bothersome for us is that the carafe dribbles when pouring a cup of coffee or using it to fill the water tank.
2) Another issue is that the lid of the coffee maker is hinged at the back and allows the water condensation that collects on the lid to drip down the back of the coffee maker and end up all over the kitchen counter.
3) Another, but less severe, issue is that the drip apparatus is connected to the lid so it gets in the way when trying to fill the water tank.

If you enjoy wiping down your kitchen counter every time you make coffee and every time you pour a cup, this is the one for you.FYI, I did try to inform Black & Decker but have not had a response to the comment I submitted on their website.

Black & Decker SDC750 Spacemaker 12-Cup Programmable Under-the-Cabinet Coffeemaker, White Review

Black & Decker SDC750 Spacemaker 12-Cup Programmable Under-the-Cabinet Coffeemaker, White

We have owned five Black & Decker Spacemaker coffee makers from three different generations of the line over the past five years.Aside from the fact that they tend to burn out after about 10-14 months (In case anyone over there is listening, I for one would pay more for a more durable unit), we have been VERY pleased with them.

Not so this time.We purchased this product about two months ago to replace our most recently burnt out Spacemaker coffeemaker. Here are our gripes:

1) Water cannister not sealed and virtually impossible to carry from sink without sloshing water all over the kitchen floor and counter. We tried unsuccessfully to remedy this situation by sealing it with caulk.I've had to resort to not filling it as full as it otherwise might be, and just carrying it VERY SLOWLY and CAREFULLY.

2) Not infrequently (for example, twice in just the past week for us), the valve from the filter holder to the pot remains closed so that it overflows when brewing a pot, flooding the counter with coffee and grounds. This appears to happen even when the carafe is properly in place. What a mess.

3) Removing the coffee filter holder to make a new pot is likewise nearly impossible to do without spilling condensed water all over the counter including whatever happens to be sitting under the pot at any given time - (keep papers and books far clear of this space if you buy this unit...)The only fix for this I have discovered is to remove the filter holder and the carafe simultaneously and carry them to the sink together in their original configuration.Again, a marked step backwards from previous Spacemaker designs.

We love the concept of the Spacemaker and love the appearance.Although I would not endorse this particular model, hopefully the next one will correct these defects.

I bought one of these a few months back as I need all the counter space I can get.It is perfect for my kitchen and I love the space I got.It makes a quick pot of coffee and the temp is just right.
I think the only couple downsides I see are that the place where you pour the water is a small hole, easy to miss. Also, for some reason, the clock is screwy. It is slow and it looses about an hour every day. Finally, the pot on mine broke after only a month and I cannot find a replacement for it.

Special-fit carafe MUST sit in place to disengage the "brew stop" feature,
or you will be lapping up your coffee as it overflows on the counter.

PAPER THIN carafe (I have no idea how it made it from, lemme guess, China?)
without breaking. Small tap on the water faucet: time for a new carafe.

DO NOT buy a "compatible" carafe, even if you can find it. If it doesn't
fit EXACTLY as the original, you get to lap up the coffee from the
counter.

I would recommend this to Bernie Madoff and would require he hold it in
his lap while making coffee with an ill-fitting replacement cafe while
in his underwear. Other than that, stay away.

We bought this coffee maker about 5 days ago and were immediately and continuously disappointed. The carafe keeps the coffee tepid at best. There is no heating element on the coffee maker. From the moment coffee is made (not very hot) it gets cold. Within 30 minutes it is not drinkable. Additionally, the reservoir fill markers are easy to see but it is very, very difficult to see the water level. Unless you look directly into the coffee maker reservoir or pour the water into the reservoir from some premeasured container, it is almost impossible to determine how much water is in the reservoir.

Yes, I used to have to buy those overpriced, German coffee makers--but not any more. When my latest $100 coffee maker started leaking from both the underside and from the little, unreadable, glass tube on the side, I started looking around for a replacement.

I settled on this Black and Decker model because it does everything the high-priced models do, but at a quarter of the price. After three weeks, the clock still keeps excellent time, the machine still comes on when I'm sound asleep so that I wake up to coffee ready to drink. The coffee tastes very good (c'mon, drip coffee is drip coffee--and I am STILL a coffee snob) and is certainly hot enough. The coffee maker is absolutely EASY to program; each button serves but one function.Aside from the fact that it doesn't LEAK, it seems I lose power here with disturbing regularity, so I like to be able to set the clock and the timer easily and quickly and feel assured that I'll have coffee when I wake up.

What I don't miss about the old coffee maker: leaks, erratic, confusingprogramming and multiple functions for one button, default ON for auto coffee making (and there's no way to turn it OFF), special little (hard to find) charcoal filter gizmo, adjustable temperature settings on the hot plate, and did I mention LEAKS.

What I miss about the old coffee maker: ability to change length of time the hot plate stays hot, "CALC" calcium warning. Both of which are easy to overcome. If I want two more hours of hot plate all I do is hit the "power" button; if I want to decalcify my machine, all I have to do is run a load of vinegar through on the solstices and equinoxes.

I pre ordered one of the SDC850's a month ago and it showed up yesterday.Nice looking unit, but pretty por performance.

Mounting "Simply grasp the top panel and pull it off"I'm 6ft 185 lbs and couldn't get the top panel to slide off, maybe some C4 would help?No problem, it can be mounted in one piece.

The template doesn't have the measurements that the directions say it does.OK, figure that out and drill the holes.

Using the spacers required for my cabinets I find that the only screws that will work are the longest ones - which are so long that they bottom out in the front right hole.Out to the garage to cut the screw shorter.

Next I attempt to pull out the filter basket - won't come out.I pull on it hard enough to start flexing the entire coffee maker and it comes free.Turns out that the hole in the filter basket that engauges the retaining pin has a plastic "turd" still on it.Trim that off and it works well.

All mounted up, give the coffee maker a try.It brews a good cup of coffee. However, it doesn't seem possible to pour that cup of coffee without getting some all over the counter.

EDIT: It appears that my caraffe is defective, which is the reason for the inability to pour cleanly. The coffee leaks between where the stainless bottom and plastic top are glued together.I'll be contacting B&D warranty for a replacement.

UPDATE #2: Got ahold of B&D warranty and it appears that they have no parts or even any full units in stock.New pot is on order for me with no ETA.

Update #3: It's now April 3rd and Black and Decker still does not have any replacement caraffes to send. I should have returned the whole thing immediately.

Update #4: May 5th and still no caraffe.B&D's warranty service is unimpressive to say the least.

Final Update:May 15th finally received a complete replacement unit from B&D.Thankfully this one doesn't leak.

I'm at a loss as to the problems some other reviewers have had with this coffeemaker.I actually purchased the white unit but it's the same as this one except for the color and metal trim. I bought this machine locally and then went and read the reviews here on Amazon to make sure it was an OK unit.I was on the verge of returning it due to some of the negative comments but I figured "ah, to heck with it" and went ahead and set it up.First off, it makes a great cup of coffee and it's EASY to program. The pot is easy to pour...NO DRIPS and the water level indicator works as it should.I just wonder if all the negative reviewers work for the competition because I found no problems with this unit at all. Now, of course, time will tell if it will last many years as did my last machine but my first impressions are very good.

A motel room we stayed at had this model coffee maker. We used it twice a day for 10 days. The coffee was delicious and we found no minuses at all, so I bought one. We've been using it daily now for about three months.

The carafe is made of heavy duty glass and doesn't drip at all. The hole to pour water into is large and easy to get to. There are convenient and accurate water level windows on both sides of the unit. The controls are convenient, easy to understand, and easy to use. The basket is easily removed for cleaning, easy to position, and uses standard flat bottomed filters. The time and function displays are large and bright. All of these are comparative problem areas in the Cuisinart.

Programming works perfectly and is so simple to use we didn't need the manual. To set the time of day press the "Hours" button until it reaches the current hour and then the "Minutes" button. To set the "Auto on" time, press the "Program" button, and then set the start time the same way. Press the "Program" button again to go back to time of day. For auto start, press the "Auto on" button, which lights up. That's it.

In addition, the water enters the drip chamber in a shower rather than a stream, resulting in consistently smooth and uniform tasting coffee. I can't comment on the warming plate because we put what we don't drink immediately into a Thermos for all day use. The warming plate shuts itself off after two hours if you forget.

The negative reviews are a puzzle to me. We found none of the problems mentioned.

This is an addendum in mid Nov, 2007. The coffeemaker still makes perfect coffee and everything works like new. The only negative I'd add is that the warming plate is quite rusty, probably because I put a pot of tap water on it at night to have chlorine free water in the morning. Often the pot is damp. When we need to replace this coffeemaker, I'll paint the new warming plate with bar-b-cue paint before the first use, for rust protection.

This is an update, dated 11/20/07. The coffeemaker still works perfectly and still looks good. I sanded the rust off of the base plate, painted it with bar-b-cue paint, and as expected there is no more rust problem. I don't think the rust would occur for most people. I caused it by putting a wet pot on the plate overnight seven days a week.

We all know the problem coffee makers. They have mysterious water leaks, they don't drip into the carafe correctly, the filter basket overflows if it isn't perfectly in place.
Black and Decker (B&D) has designed a coffee maker that is inexpensive and simply eliminates those problems...
How I know:
I got this coffee maker for the office. We brew at least three 12-cup pots a day. We've done about 100 pots WITHOUT A SPILL OR LEAK.I highly recommend this machine.
What I know:
The "Perfect Pour Carafe" is great.B&D just gave it a wider spout! What a concept! You wouldn't think a handle makes a big difference, but when you're carrying 12-cups-worth of water or coffee, you will suddenly appreciate this excellent handle. This carafe even looks nice.
The filter basket does not swing out, nor must you hold it in one hand while you add the coffee.Swing-out baskets are the ones that overflow when you don't close them perfectly, and slide-out removable baskets leave only one hand for the scooping chores. This basket can be removed to dump the old grounds, but is then replaced in the machine so both hands are free.
That is because the lid opens up to expose the filter basket and the unobstructed, large water resevoir. No careful aiming or water splashing off of useless plastic grates when filling. There is a strange looking, hinged "shower head" that delivers the hot water to the filter basket. It is simple in design and works well.
The lid closes securely and pins down the removable filter basket to further eliminate human error in basket positioning.
Even the "sneak a cup" mechanism is simple and effective. It is simply a rubber stopper on a simple lever. The carafe can be placed in a "wrong" and possibly overflow-producing position, but if you place it with the handle straight out, you can't go wrong.
Water level is indicated externally on both sides of the machine.
Auto shut-off after two hours is essential in our office. It works and the coffee is kept quite hot during that time.
Easy to clean (buttons are water/coffee proof).

Mr. Coffee ISTX95 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black/Stainless Review

Ok, I nearly was pushed away by the bad reviews on this appliance but decided to give it a try.I bought it about a month ago & I really like it.

I have to start by saying that I am religious about my coffee.I only drink it if it is good coffee & prepared well.I grind my beans & I only use fresh coffee.I am very picky about every aspect of coffee drinking, it isn't a habit for me but rather an experience.

With that said, I have 'tested' each of the problems mentioned in the reviews & here is what I found:

Leaking & overflowing - I have never had that problem after weeks of use, I am not sure why one of the posters had this problem, maybe they overfilled it.

Coffee grains in coffee - Nope, no problem here, the coffee is perfectly filtered with a paper filter.I haven't seen a grain of coffee yet!

Coffee not staying warm - I find that if I keep the lid shut that the coffee stays nice & warm for over 2 hours.

Hard to fill - Yes, this coffeemaker is a bit difficult to fill but as someone else suggested, I just use my sink sprayer to fill it & it is a breeze (thanks for the suggestion!).

Doesn't pour quickly - Yes this is a bit of a slow pourer but I LOVE the caraffe so much that I won't complain about that at all.Patience is a virtue!

Someone else complained that they couldn't clean the caraffe. It does have a small opening but I have found no reason to scrub it (coffee doesn't burn on the bottom like a burner coffeemaker).I rinse it out with some soap & warm water each day & it is fine.It would be easy enough to use a bottle brush as needed.

At first I was disappointed with the strength of the coffee (I am a filter-press & espresso girl & I love it strong). So, I started adding quite a bit more coffee than what was suggested. Then one day, I forgot to put the carbon filter in.As a result, the coffee was very STRONG.So, from that point on, I used the 'regular' strength level and tossed my carbon filter into the garbage. It absolutely isn't needed, I didn't notice any change in flavor. So, bypass that silly expense!

The main reason why I was intrigued by this coffeemaker is the caraffe.I love the portability.I can take it outside or into the living room to read a book or to the computer, etc.The coffee tastes just as good an hour later & there isn't the burnt taste you get from the burner-type coffeemakers.

The clock & timers are self-explanitory & work well for me.

The coffeemaker is very nice looking & looks great on my counter.

I would recommend this coffeemaker to anyone who would enjoy the benefits & portability of the caraffe. It makes great coffee & has nice styling.
