(More customer reviews)I own the older version of this coffee maker and in white. This is the best and most reliable coffee maker I have ever had. The charcoal filters make the water taste better and I really like the 1-4 cup setting when I just want to have a few cups at one time. There is also a carafe heat setting which is very nice - I have tried the Keurig coffee maker and it doesn't heat the water enough, I like hot coffee and it keeps it warm to hot (depending on how you set it) for over an hour and then turns off automatically. I would highly recommend this coffee maker. In fact, I am going to upgrade to the stainless since that's what is in my kitchen and I am in need of a new glass carafe. Awesome product!

I have only had a week or so and can't address long term reliability. What it does do is NOT DRIP! It does not drip when pouring from the glass pot to the water reservoir or when pouring coffee into a cup. I do NOT have to be extra careful when pouring. It also stops the coffee flow from the filter as soon as I pull the pot out and does NOT drip on the warmer. Again, do NOT have to be extra careful here. It also does NOT leak condensation out of the water reservoir top when lifting the lid. The condensation on the reservoir lid drips back into the reservoir when the lid is lifted. The time and delay brew functions ARE easy to set and work fine. The coffee brewed fairly quickly and did not overflow the filter to allow grounds into the pot. So far, I am very happy with a product that someone spent some time making user friendly and practical. This is a well engineered inexpensive product.

It was my favorite coffee maker by far for the following reasons: Coffee is delicious -slow brewing permits a more robust coffee. Small footprint on my counter. Stylish design. VERY easy to program and use. Large opening through which to pour water. Charcoal filter to purify water. Automatic shut off. Caraffe has large opening for easy cleaning. NON-DRIP POURING!! I was in heaven with this coffeemaker and knew I'd found the perfect one. (I've had many in my lifetime.)

Unfortunately, two days ago, the plastic surrounding the hot plate began to melt. The vendor from whom I purchased it has already refunded my money and has asked me to return it. I will NOT purchase another one for fear of fire hazard. This coffeemaker would have received 10 stars from me had it not begun to melt itself to death. For this reason, I'm heartsick.....it WAS the perfect coffeemaker.

I too was concerned that it is not a thermal insulated carafe but it turns out that is not needed since it sits on a "Keep Hot" warming plate. Though it is not listed on the outside of the box, it does indeed automatically shut off after 2 hours as described in the instructions.The clock and programmable timer are simple to set up. Best of all it brews hot delicious coffee!

1) The most bothersome for us is that the carafe dribbles when pouring a cup of coffee or using it to fill the water tank.
2) Another issue is that the lid of the coffee maker is hinged at the back and allows the water condensation that collects on the lid to drip down the back of the coffee maker and end up all over the kitchen counter.
3) Another, but less severe, issue is that the drip apparatus is connected to the lid so it gets in the way when trying to fill the water tank.

If you enjoy wiping down your kitchen counter every time you make coffee and every time you pour a cup, this is the one for you.FYI, I did try to inform Black & Decker but have not had a response to the comment I submitted on their website.

PAPER THIN carafe (I have no idea how it made it from, lemme guess, China?)
without breaking. Small tap on the water faucet: time for a new carafe.

DO NOT buy a "compatible" carafe, even if you can find it. If it doesn't
fit EXACTLY as the original, you get to lap up the coffee from the
counter.

I would recommend this to Bernie Madoff and would require he hold it in
his lap while making coffee with an ill-fitting replacement cafe while
in his underwear. Other than that, stay away.

(More customer reviews)Yes, I used to have to buy those overpriced, German coffee makers--but not any more.When my latest $100 coffee maker started leaking from both the underside and from the little, unreadable, glass tube on the side, I started looking around for a replacement.

I settled on this Black and Decker model because it does everything the high-priced models do, but at a quarter of the price.After three weeks, the clock still keeps excellent time, the machine still comes on when I'm sound asleep so that I wake up to coffee ready to drink.The coffee tastes very good (c'mon, drip coffee is drip coffee--and I am STILL a coffee snob) and is certainly hot enough.The coffee maker is absolutely EASY to program; each button serves but one function.Aside from the fact that it doesn't LEAK, it seems I lose power here with disturbing regularity, so I like to be able to set the clock and the timer easily and quickly and feel assured that I'll have coffee when I wake up.

What I don't miss about the old coffee maker: leaks, erratic, confusingprogramming and multiple functions for one button, default ON for auto coffee making (and there's no way to turn it OFF), special little (hard to find) charcoal filter gizmo, adjustable temperature settings on the hot plate, and did I mention LEAKS.

What I miss about the old coffee maker: ability to change length of time the hot plate stays hot, "CALC" calcium warning.Both of which are easy to overcome.If I want two more hours of hot plate all I do is hit the "power" button; if I want to decalcify my machine, all I have to do is run a load of vinegar through on the solstices and equinoxes.

(More customer reviews)We bought this 5-cup coffeemaker in September 2009 because we were unable to find a 4-cup replacement carafe at Wal-Mart and ordering one on-line cost as much as a new 4 or 5-cup maker.The new 5-cup coffeemaker worked well until January 2010 when we started experiencing what we assumed were power interruptions because the time and timer had to be reset 2 or 3 or more times a day.A "short" time later (pun intended), the display itself became fainter AND the coffeemaker would in fact lose power(shut off), sometimes right in the middle of making a new batch.
We are not heavy coffee drinkers, making only 1 batch per day.We assume the problems occurred because the buttons for the clock and timer are located just below where the carafe sits where either water or coffee is bound to seep into the button contacts, causing these problems.
One more thing.The last Mr. Coffee we owned didn't have the metal band around the bottom of the carafe.This new one does and, when you fill the carafe with water, some gets "trapped" in the steel band until you go to pour it in the coffeemaker reservoir and then it dribbles out on the counter.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Mr. Coffee JWX27 to replace an old, old programmable Mr. Coffee coffeemaker. I picked the JWX27 because it has stainless steel trim, the appearance of which I like, but it doesn't have a thermal carafe that a lot of the stainless brewers have and I don't want, and it is reasonably priced. My old brewer wasn't anything fancy to look at, but it started up in the morning on its own and it made good coffee. This new model has several "improvements" that actually take away from the simple, useful appliance the old one was.

First, the water filter. This is a piece of filtering material in a frame that lays on top of the brew basket. You have to pivot the water head away from over the brew basket and pick up the filter gadget to get to the basket to put your coffee in it. I plan to throw thisjunky thing away. It's a messy, annoying contraption that is just getting on the way of setting up the coffeemaker and I have some serious doubts about its effectiveness since it looks like it's made of paper. Additionally, if you're trying to brew a second pot quickly after the first, it's hot!

Speaking of the brew basket, rather than sitting in a separate assembly that pivots in and out over the carafe, to get to the basket on the JWX27, you have to flip open lid of the brewing machine. Once you get the water filter out of the way, there are some little loops to pull the basket out by, but it's not as neat as past designs that had a handle on the side to lift out the basket for dumping used filters/coffee grounds.

On the positive side, the clock and start timer are easy to set and are easy to understand how to brew immediately or brew at a programmed time. I have no need for the timer that can tell me how long the brewed coffee has been sitting, but it doesn't make itself annoying in any way, so no problem with it. The heating element turns itself off after two hours, which is peace of mind for when you are sitting at your desk at work wondering "did I turn off the coffeepot?" and worrying that you'll burn the house down.

The "pause 'n serve" function is still there for when you can't wait for a pot to finish up before getting that first cup of coffee into your cup but if I could figure out how to remove or disable the irritating beeper that goes off when the brew cycle is done, I'd totally do it. I live in a small house and when my coffee is ready at 5:00 AM, the rest of my family doesn't need to be woken up by Mr. Coffee obnoxiously announcing himself!

The JWX27 has a feature to switch between "regular" and "strong" brewing, and set on "strong", the resulting coffee (when I brew my usual 4 cups rather than a full pot) I get a nice strong "wake you up in the morning" brew.

In conclusion, my overall impression is that the Mr. Coffee JWX27 has a host of features that actually take away from the utility and ease of use that the basic no-frills Mr. Coffee design has but in spite of the unnecessary (from my perspective) annoyances, it makes a decent pot of coffee for a reasonable price.

(More customer reviews)Because we're serious about our coffee, we sold our old $100+ Cuisinart coffeemaker to be replaced with this much better designed and much easier to use coffee maker.

A motel room we stayed at had this model coffee maker. We used it twice a day for 10 days. The coffee was delicious and we found no minuses at all, so I bought one. We've been using it daily now for about three months.

The carafe is made of heavy duty glass and doesn't drip at all. The hole to pour water into is large and easy to get to. There are convenient and accurate water level windows on both sides of the unit. The controls are convenient, easy to understand, and easy to use. The basket is easily removed for cleaning, easy to position, and uses standard flat bottomed filters. The time and function displays are large and bright. All of these are comparative problem areas in the Cuisinart.

Programming works perfectly and is so simple to use we didn't need the manual. To set the time of day press the "Hours" button until it reaches the current hour and then the "Minutes" button. To set the "Auto on" time, press the "Program" button, and then set the start time the same way. Press the "Program" button again to go back to time of day. For auto start, press the "Auto on" button, which lights up. That's it.

In addition, the water enters the drip chamber in a shower rather than a stream, resulting in consistently smooth and uniform tasting coffee. I can't comment on the warming plate because we put what we don't drink immediately into a Thermos for all day use. The warming plate shuts itself off after two hours if you forget.

The negative reviews are a puzzle to me. We found none of the problems mentioned.

This is an addendum in mid Nov, 2007. The coffeemaker still makes perfect coffee and everything works like new. The only negative I'd add is that the warming plate is quite rusty, probably because I put a pot of tap water on it at night to have chlorine free water in the morning. Often the pot is damp. When we need to replace this coffeemaker, I'll paint the new warming plate with bar-b-cue paint before the first use, for rust protection.

This is an update, dated 11/20/07. The coffeemaker still works perfectly and still looks good. I sanded the rust off of the base plate, painted it with bar-b-cue paint, and as expected there is no more rust problem. I don't think the rust would occur for most people. I caused it by putting a wet pot on the plate overnight seven days a week.

(More customer reviews)I have owned several Mr. Coffee 4 cup models, going back to the one that looks like it was made in the 1970's (with the floating orange water indicator) - This one is the best one to date.

The high points:

1) It's small and light

2) While the lid is up, the water will simply cycle through the resovoir ( a great way to preheat your water is to simply keep the lid up while the machine is running until it gets (quite) hot - then close the lid. )

3) It came with a re-usable basket filter (a nice feature considering the machine was only ~ 20$)

The negative

1) The carafe is just a tad difficult to pour from. Do not get me wrong, if you concentrate and proceed with caution, it does function without error. However, without due attention you might notice some drops spilling over the edge. That said, when pouring out the last few ounces at the end you will feel the steam/vapor rising up to your hand - it is HOT.

For $20, I would reccomend it to everyone I know as the perfect 4 cup maker.

The best feature is it makes 5 cups, so if you are using a larger mug you can get 2 full servings with each pot. The timer is easy to operate and works perfectly. I never used a steel mesh reusable coffee filter before but it works surprisingly well, but it adds one more thing to wash. Even finely ground coffee does not pass through the reusable filter. Paper coffee filters can be used as well. It can be purchased at Linen-n-Things for $15 with their 20% off coupons. A steal-of-a-deal at that price. The only negative about Black & Decker products is replacement parts (glass pot, filter) are generally not available at retail stores and sometimes they have limited availability since models come and go quickly. But for the price of this unit a complete replacement is less than a couple cups of coffee at Starbucks.

(More customer reviews)Bought this model at walmart for [...] as I had a gift card for there. Have used daily for about 6 weeks - usu. make about 8 cups. There have been no issues and the coffee tastes good for this economy model. Pause-n-serve works fine...can occasionly drip as all these models do when using that feature. Just keep a small napkin to wipe it off burner before setting carafe back on it. If you pull the carafe between "burps" (when the coffee actually drips through), you can virtually eliminate or minimze the drip. Easy to clean, the 2/hr shutoff works fine, and the timed brew feature works fine (as long as power doesn't go off over night). Overall it was a great buy in my opinion. The last Mr. Coffee I had (similiar unit) lasted 15 years...I can only hope this one lasts half that long. I even kept and use the same gold filter unit from the old one & it works fine on this model.

NOTE: Save the grounds and use on houseplants, in garden, and on small trees. Keeps insects away esp ants. The trees/plants absorbed the caffeine which doesn't hurt them - the insects can't tolerate it. I've been doing this for 20 years and works great.
