Has a nice space in the bottom of the filter to put the bio balls for that added biological filter. So easy to remove, replace the pads and be up and running again. A real cost saver because the pads can be rinsed and used again. You should get an extra set, it makes it easy for when you change the pads.

(More customer reviews)As someone else stated, the filter packs are a waste of money.If you only have fish in the tank, and not live plants, you need only purchase a jug of charcoal, and replace the filter media yourself (after rinsing, of course).

Further, if you have live plants in your biorb, you will need to replace the charcoal with a filter media such as SeaChem's purigen.At $18ish / 100ml, this is still far more economical than using the OEM filter packs, and you'll be using a filter media that will not rob the water of the nutrients the plants require to thrive.

As far as the sponge part of the filter, just rinse it out in old tank water.Simple, economical, and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

BTW- that overpriced bulb is a simple JC G4 bi-pin base, halogen 5w bulb.No need to pay the premium for the reef one packaging.For that matter, the jackhammer airpump can be replaced with a cheepo $7 model from wherever as well when it quits.

Hope this helps others, I've learned along the way that owning a biorb needs not be an expensive proposition!

(More customer reviews)This skimmer will work a little but it will take you awhile to get it right.It is difficult to adjust properly to get it to actually skim and not just fill the collection cup with water.Also it is a "In Tank" skimmer and it takes up a lot of space.I had it running in a 55 gallon tank and it looked terrible.If you are planning on getting a skimmer please, for your and you tanks sake buy the best protein skimmer you can afford, preferably a hang on back (HOB) skimmer.That will save you precious tank space and will look a whole lot better.If you need something quick this will do, but it doesn't work very well and its an eyesore in the tank.

(More customer reviews)The Penguin Bio-wheel pumps are great: quiet, effective and long-lasting. (I have a 170 filter in a 39 gallon tank.) These size C filters are widely available, but the Amazon price is much lower than at my not-so-nearby pet store.

A word of warning. The day after changing my filter three months ago fish started dying. Next morning my 6" long Plecostomus was dead. Then three Clown Loaches, each about 5 " long. Within a week I had lost 18 of my 20 fish. Yet there was no sign of disease.

A water test and much internet searching finally pointed out what I had done wrong. I had neglected my tank for a few weeks. In a rush to catch up, I siphoned out about 30 percent of the water (more than usual), did a "better" than usual job of siphoning up detritus from the gravel. Then - my biggest mistake - I replaced the Penguin filter too! The result is the water chemistry changed too quickly. The Nitrates spiked to a deadly level. My tank, healthy for more than two years, needed to be started over. Took two months and many water changes before I could safely add new fish.

I visited perhaps a dozen "fish forums" and only one had a comment saying "don't change filters when you do a water change.' The Penguin filters and the box they come in carry no warnings. What I (and you) should do is simple: space your water changes and filter changes a week or two apart.

Now knowing how important the "aged" filter is (especially in a tank like mine with no under gravel filter) I've started this habit: there's just enough space to get a second filter flat against the old filter. After a couple of weeks, I remove the older filter and put the newer one - by now doing some biological filtering - in its place. That way the tank is never depending on only a new filter. For larger tanks (say 55 gal and up), the 330 or 350 Penguin pump holds two filters side by side, so just change one filter at a time.
