Bunn NHB Professional Home Brewer, Black Review

Bunn NHB Professional Home Brewer, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm fond of some of the 'thicker' smokier coffees.Mocha Matari (while difficult to find) is among my favorites.Normal drip pots (including some expensive ones) don't provide the complexity of flavor I enjoy.(I suspect the water is too hot, the brewing cycle is too long, and the coffee is over-extracted.)

One of my daughters is a coffee fanatic. She brought me some Ethopian coffee that she insisted I just had to try.So I ground it up, brewed it with the Bunn, and tasted it.The coffee was great. But my daughter's comments were revealing."This tastes so good at home, but so much better here.My birthday is coming up -- I know what I want for a gift."

And that's basically what it comes down to.Even supermarket "100% Columbian" coffee tastes pretty good, better than it has any right to taste.

There are a couple of down-sides, though. It keeps the water hot all the time, and that means that the water evaporates over time.Get accustomed to brewing a pot a day, and if you brew two pots in a row, you'll get more water than you expect and the coffee will be thin.Go away for the weekend, and you'll have less water than you expected when you return. Also, the brewing does not over-extract the coffee compared to most other brewing machines, and that means that to get the strength of coffee you want, you'll probably want to use about 20% more coffee than what you're accustomed to.Also, the quick extraction seems to brew the coffee with less caffeine, so if coffee is something you use to get started after not enough sleep, and not something to savor, this may not be for you.

But what you get in return is something that doesn't just open your eyes, but that tastes better than you probably thought was possible. For my money, there is no second choice.

Also -- stock up on the Bunn filter papers. They're deeper, and that's necessary to keep grounds from overflowing. The quick brew cycle means that there's more water in with the coffee than with typical coffee brewers, and standard filters can't contain all that water.

DeLonghi DC312T 14-Cup Drip Coffeemaker Review

DeLonghi DC312T 14-Cup Drip Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most people, almost any coffeemaker on sale here at Amazon will be fine. But if you're looking for the same kind of robust-flavor, non-bitter coffee served at places like Starbucks, then you need a coffeemaker with special capabilities. This machine has those capabilities--and at an excellent price. Here's what I mean: 1. it has a 14-cup capacity. This is important because it means you can put more grounds into the filter without worrying about it overflowing. 2. Water temperature is hot and delivered though a "showerhead." 3. This machine has a special setting that dribbles the water more slowly, steeping the grounds. This last (and unique to this machine) feature is what gives you exceptionally robust and flavorful coffee.

I've been through several coffeemakers (all exiled to the attic), and this one is the best--better than makers costing three-times as much. I bought mine for $35 at Target.

True, the clock-setting mechanism is clunky, but how often do you use that? On the other hand, the design of the water-tank and glass pot is very convenient.

August 2010 Update: coffeemakes is still going strong. The manufacturer has a new web presence with links for service and parts.

Product Description:
Brew up to 14 cups (70 ounces) of great-tasting coffee with this easy-to-use drip coffeemaker. The unit's showerhead design helps extract coffee's full natural flavor by allowing water to completely saturate all coffee grounds, while its aroma button activates a unique brewing process that enhances the flavor and aroma of coffee. The coffeemaker achieves this full-bodied flavor by saturating the grounds a little at a time using a time-released process that dispenses water into the filter basket in 30-second intervals. It also provides a pause-and-serve function, for pouring a quick cup midbrew, and a 24-hour programmable timer with two-hour automatic shut-off. Setting the timer allows for waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee or for having coffee ready to serve with dessert without having to get up from the table half way through dinner. Other highlights include simple push-button controls, a digital display, an internal water-level indicator, and a durable, easy-to-clean washable nylon filter, as well as a non-stick warming plate and cord storage to help keep countertops tidy. A glass carafe with a generous stay-cool handle and drip-free pour spout comes included. The drip coffeemaker measures approximately 12-1/2 by 9-3/4 by 8-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Average Reviews:

We bought this particular model because we want our coffee to brew fast and wanted an insulated pot to avoid coffee cooking or forgetting to turn off the burner. It would be an exact fit for our requirements if not for a few quality flaws.First, as with another Bunn we recently owned, the water releases into the grounds in such a way that they splash up the side and a little bit out of the grounds basket - creating a mess you don't have with other brands.(We've tried different methods to prevent this but they don't work consistently.) Also, where the top black piece of the pot assembly is supposed to be sealed with the chrome portion, there is not a tight seal so when you pour a cup of coffee it dribbles out of the seal which makes a mess.(No we haven't dropped it or put it in the dishwasher - this started within the first few days of use.) Summary: Was willing to pay the high price to get the features and company name behind this product initially but the quality of the build is disappointing.Thought the quality problem with my first Bunn purchase was perhaps a one-time thing.Considering this second quality problem with a Bunn purchase, I will not be buying any future products from them.

I bought this brewer in October. At first I was very happy with it. Then the carafe started leaking so bad it was ridiculous. I called Bunn a couple of days ago and the lady told me to wash the spout and the seal around the rim with Dawn dishwashing soap (she specifically said Dawn which I happened to have on hand) and the carafe would perform much better. She said that after a number of uses the oil from the coffee keeps the seal from sealing well. I hung up fully expecting to call her back in a few minutes. I washed the carafe as she suggested and it works like new again... no leaks!! If you have this pot, try it, you'll be amazed at the difference. Now I love this brewer again!

Bunn BXB 10-Cup Professional Coffee Brewer, Black Review

Bunn BXB 10-Cup Professional Coffee Brewer, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bunn BXB is an excellent coffee maker, but requires a different understanding of brewing coffee.

Instead of super heating the water immediately before spraying it over the grounds, this coffee maker has a stainless steel tank that stores hot water at around 200 degree fahrenheit. This enables the coffee maker to spray hot rather than super heated water over the grounds, eliminating the scorched taste and power surges associated with fast heating. Fresh water poured into the reservoir at the top flows into the bottom of the storage tank pushing hot water out the top onto the waiting coffee grounds making a hot pot of coffee in under three minutes. The storage tank takes about 15 minutes to heat the first time and will hold almost two carafes worth of water.

My last Bunn lasted 15 years and failed due to a design flaw, which has been fixed in this model. Other coffee brewers were lucky to last 5 years.

My old Bunn coffee maker had the hot water tank in direct contact with the water reservoir in the top of the maker. This contact caused the water reservoir to disintegrate and leak whenever fresh water was poured into the coffee maker.

In the new model, this contact point is removed, separating the hot water tank from the water reservoir by about 1/2 inch. In addition, the reservoir now has a valve that doesn't release the water into the hot water tank until the cover on the reservoir is closed. No more spilled water if you're not fast enough with the carafe or forget the carafe needs to be in position before pouring in fresh water. This new feature also means no need to use and store the separate measuring/fill container.

My only problem with this design is the lack of insulation around the hot water tank. Because the water stays constantly hot, the coffee maker is a heat source that must be guarded against and is warm enough to be uncomfortable although not hot enough to burn. This lack of insulation also results in heat/energy being lost that could be conserved. (I use this excess heat to pre-warm canned catfood for my pride of cats by placing the catfood on top of the coffee maker. It heats the canned catfood just enough without overheating.)

Because this coffee maker is constantly plugged in, it may not be useable in some businesses that have rules about leaving appliances plugged in overnight to prevent fires. It is, however, an excellent coffee maker where coffee/hot water is needed 24/7.

Other than that, a great coffee maker that I'll buy again -- in 15 to 20 years.

(Note: This is NOT the high altitude model designed for use above 5,000 feet. The high altitude models are the "D" models.)

I love the Bunn products!I even have a Bunn coffee pot in my house!
This coffee pot has a couple small things I do not care for.
#1The lid where you pour water into leaks water onto top of machine every time it's opened.
Poor design! It should be twice as big so you don't pour water every where also.
#2There is a 30 second delay before coffee begins to come thru filter.I've never seen this before, usually it's instantaneous. Some people end up pouring more water in & then you have a mess!
Other than those things, it's a great machine.

BUNN BX-B Classic 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black Review

BUNN BX-B Classic 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will not bore you with all of the exact specifics of this coffee brewer. There are plenty of other reviews here on AmazonBUNN BX-B Classic 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black or check the Bunn website for additional info here:http://www.bunnomatic.com/retail/products/b.html

This Bunn BX-B 10-cup coffe brewer is a pricey but fantastic coffee maker for your home or small office.I bought one for my office, so that I can make myself a quick pot of coffee when I get to work or whenever someone stops by to visit my office during the day. This machine makes coffe FAST and the flavor of the coffee is always consistent.Although I have never found many of the Bunn coffee makers to be much of a fashion statement, this unit is fairly high-tech looking, with its black and stainless color combination.Since the water flows out of this unit so quickly, using a showerhead type spray pattern, I highly suggest that you always use genuine Bunn coffee filters as the store brand filters are usually not tall enough, causing the ground coffee to splash up and over the edge of the shorter filters.

One noteable difference between this and most previous pour-over Bunn models is that this unit does not require the use of a seperate water pitcher. You simply fill your coffee pot with water, lift the little door on the top/front of the unit and pour your water in.The most important step is to place the coffee pot on the warmer plate, being sure to center it properly, before lowering the door on the top of the coffee maker. As soon as you lower the door the water will start to flow quickly. If you lower the door before you place the pot underneath, you will likely end up with a bit of a mess. Also, I recommend that you insert your filter and pour in your measured amount of ground coffee before pouring water into the Bunn, because even with the door up I find that some water tends to drip from the output nozzle, causing water to drip down onto the warmer plate.I fill my pot with water, set it aside while installing my filter and ground coffee, then pour in my water, center the pot on the warmer plate and then lower the door. This has produced proper function every time, without any mess to clean up.

My likes and dislikes are as follows:

Pros:
*****
-Makes a pot of coffee in only 3 minutes or less!
-Consistent coffee flavor with every pot
-No need to use a seperate water pitcher as with previous Bunn models
-Simplistic operation that anyone can handle
-Easy to clean and maintain
-Pleasing black and stainless steel design
-Build quality seems to be much higher than many other coffee makers

Cons:
*****
-No automatic shutoff (could pose hazzard if warmer plate is left on over the weekend)
-No timer feature for brewing coffee at a set time
-No temperature control for the warmer plate (it gets VERY hot!)
-If you don't use it for several days some of the water evaporates from the hot water tank
-Must use genuine Bunn coffee filters, which are not always easy to find
-Pricey for a basic coffee maker

The cons are somewhat minor but the lack of an automatic shutoff really bothers me.I ended up purchasing a seperate digital appliance timer, which I plug the Bunn coffee maker into, so that I can set power on and off times. This way I don't have to worry about leaving the warmer plate turned on over night or over the weekend.Overall I am extremely happy with my Bunn BX-B coffee brewer. It is easy to use and makes a great tasting pot of coffee in just under 3 minutes. It is also a great device for producing plain hot water. If you exclude the filter and coffee this unit produces a pot of very hot water in less time than it takes to make the normal pot of coffee. This is great for making instant coffee, hot chocolate, tea, instant oatmeal, etc.The BX-B carries a pretty hefty price tag (as all Bunn models do), but it is built well and makes excellent coffee in a flash. If you believe that time is money (as I do), then the Bunn BX-B is worth every penny for all of the time you'll save.=o)

The Bunn Coffee Brewer makes great coffee, but there is design feature that may appeal to many. The water pours into the front of the brewer.
With most counter top coffee makers, the water must be poured into the back of the machine. This means the coffee maker must be pulled away from the overhead cabinets in order to access the water reservoir. With the Bunn, I never have to move the machine and I can keep it pushed back on the counter top.
The brewing time is so short that you don't need a programmable timer. From the time I pour the water in until I am enjoying my first cup is only a little over 3 minutes.
I should have bought this a long time ago.

BUNN HG Phase Brew 8-Cup Home Brewer Review

BUNN HG Phase Brew 8-Cup Home Brewer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After my trusty Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker, Black and Stainless Steel died after 5 years of steady use, I decided to 'upgrade' to a Bunn. The Bunn HG brewer is different from previous Bunns because it heats the water for each brew right before actually brewing, as opposed to inefficiently keeping a water tank heated 24/7, 365 days a year (previous Bunn models). It is for this reason, and the Bunn name, that I enthusiastically dove in and bought it.To make a long story short, I am not so enthusiastic after using it--read on for details.

The carafe. It actually is the cleanest pouring carafe I have ever used--not a drop spilled. However, it consists of a plastic rim attached to a lower portion of glass.Coffee leaks at this junction no matter how fast you pour, producing a steady stream of coffee that dribbles down the outside of the coffee pot and onto the counter top.Not sure if I just got a bad carafe or if this problem is more common.

Full capacity brewing. The way this unit works is you add up to 8 cups of water to the tank. When turned on, it boils this water until the total temp reaches 200 deg F (about 6 mins), then it releases it over 4 minutes through the coffee funnel and into the carafe. The problem is that if the full 8 cups of water are added to the tank, a little comes out during the boil phase from between the spin lid and top of the tank. This then goes down the sides of the tank, drips on the pot and down to the warming plate where it hisses and boils (no, I didn't overfill it--it was right on the max line).I did not experience this with a little under 7.5 cups water in the tank.

Build. This unit actually looks like it came from Captain Picard's ready room and is unique looking. However, there is a lot of open space in it's design--the unit is not compact. Also, there are only two supports holding up the water tank and the brew basket.During the aforementioned boil phase, the vibrations of the boiling water cause the tank to visibly shake. It isn't excessive and in no way harms the unit, but it adds a chintzy feel to this unit and could easily be solved by supporting the tank on three sides. In addition, it is just about 15.5 inches tall, but my cabinets sit exactly 15.25 inches above my countertops. Grrr!

Lastly, 8 cup capacity is just barely enough for me and my wife--a larger capacity would be nice.

In all fairness, the unit makes good coffee. However, so do other coffee makers that only cost half as much.Even if a replacement carafe would solve the leaking coffee problem, I feel there are too many issues present for a $100 coffee brewer.

ADDENDUM (11/4/10): I decided to keep this unit when the place I bought it from wanted to charge a 15% restocking fee (my fault for not reading the fine print).I contacted BUNN about the leaky carafe and they sent out a replacement, which works good--no leaks.Unfortunately, I went to make coffee the next day but nothing happened. The display showed it was working, but it did not heat the water.I called BUNN again, and they sent another brewer. So far, this one is working just fine.I have to say BUNN customer service has been excellent in dealing with my issues--both times sending out replacements promptly.

Phase Brew is different than other drip coffee makers. Unlike ordinary machines, the Phase Brew doesn't "drip" right away. In fact, it doesn't drip at all. That's because the revolutionary Heat and Release Technology heats all the water to the right temperature during the 6-minute heating phase, then quickly releases it through the unique sprayhead for an optimal 4-minute brewing phase and amazing coffee flavor. BUNN GRXB Original 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black

I've had 3 of these in the last 10 years (I don't baby my coffeemakers, and eventually the hard water kills them). I am not the patient type, so I prefer the Bunn because it makes a full pot in 3 mins. I can start the coffee, get the cup and the creamer, and the coffee is ready.

I prefer this version over the newer one, as I am not too certain of the swivel lid on the newer ones remaining flat and not breaking.

I would recommend that you use the Bunn coffee filters, which are available at most stores. Anything else is probably too short to properly fit the filter container, and you'll get grounds in your coffee pot.

I also recommend using a pretty fine grind of coffee. That seems to get the best flavor.

When I was looking to purchase a new machine, I only was looking for a Bunn. Bunn makes the best coffee machines, none can compare. Every diner, coffee house, and Dunkin' Donuts only use Bunn machines. The A10 is one great machine! Brews perfect cups of coffee hot and quickly. Everyone in my office is very happy with the unit. If you're a serious coffee drinker, please don't cheap out on a Mr.Coffee, Braun or Krupps-- frankly they cannot brew coffee at the speed, temperature, or taste of a Bunn unit. I bought the A10 to replace a Bunn unit that I used for 10 years without a glitch.

Bunn VP17-2 BLK Pourover Coffee Brewer with 2 Warmers Review

Bunn VP17-2 BLK Pourover Coffee Brewer with 2 Warmers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This, along with my commercial Bunn Coffee Grinder, is my favorite indulgence. I have owned a Bunn designed for home use for 20 years and I finally took the plunge and bought this one. Bunn is the industry standard and for good reason. Every aspect of this brewer is quality.

Bunns work differently than most home drip machines in that they have a water reservoir that holds about 2 1/2 "loads" of water at any one time that is constantly kept at brewing temperature - the machine is "on" all the time. This is what allows you to brew a pot of coffee instantly. No waiting for the water to heat up. The switches on the front are for the warming plates, which I don't use. I prefer to transfer the hot brewed coffee to an air pot so it doesn't get bitter but still stays hot. This particular model doesn't need to be plumbed. You just pour the correct amount of water from the supplied pitcher into the top of the machine - hence the name "Pour-o-matic". It makes 12 cups of perfectly brewed coffee in a couple of minutes. Making morning coffee is such a pleasure now. I may be a rotten cook, but I can serve up a fine cup of coffee with my Bunn!

The stainless steel case is thick, sturdy and designed for easy cleaning. I live in a hard water area where mineral deposits clog up coffee brewers overnight but this is designed to make it easy to keep it running freely. Even the spray head is stainless and is easy to unscrew and rinse out daily. That also gives you access to the water delivery tubing which you just ream out with the supplied flexible spring rod (called the de-liming tool). It's very quiet when heating up the water - a big thing if you've ever had a different brand of commercial brewer.

If you can't live without your brewed coffee and you can afford this pricey indulgence, you'll never regret buying a Bunn.

Bunn NHBX-B Contemporary 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black Review

Bunn NHBX-B Contemporary 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bunn Coffee Makers are very high quality coffee makers, and one typically needs to spend money to get this kind of quality. However, there are a few costs you should be aware of before you purchase a Bunn Coffee Maker.I'm not saying that it may not be worth it to you, but you may as well know all of the costs before purchasing.

They both have to do with how Bunn delivers such a fast pot - 3 minutes as opposed to 4-8 minutes of other makers. The first way they do it is to have what amounts to two sets of water tanks: one you fill, and the other is preheated. The preheated water tank is delivered to the spray head, and because it is preheated, it doesn't require any time to heat it up.The problem is that it is preheated 24/7, and that can be costly.I'm guessing they use a 100 watt heater. If it takes 15-30 cents per day in energy costs, you are looking at $50-$100 per year. You can, after you are done brewing for the day, shut off the "vacation switch" which is the switch to the tank heater, and this will save the cost and energy, but if you forget to turn it back on at least 15 minutes ahead of when you need it, you are looking at a 15 minute wait for the tank to reheat before you can brew. You can also use a timer to limit the time of day the unit stays preheated, but that's an additional cost and timers use energy to run all day.

Furthermore, if you are having guests, if you brew a pot of caffinated, followed by a pot of decaf, you may need to wait 15 minutes between pots. The Bunn commercial brewers keep three preheated tanks, so this isn't a problem for them. But the consumer models keep only one tank preheated.

Note that they work on gravity: the water you put in pushes the preheated water out. Some of the preheated water will evaporate, so you have to put in more water than you want out.

The second thing they do to get a fast brew is to increase the amount of water that pours in to the filter basket, far greater than other coffee makers. The amount of water would collapse other filters, but because these filters are taller and sturdier, they stand up.But that means you are stuck with their filters, which, if you don't have a supply nearby, and few stores carry them, means paying for the filters plus shipping.

Bunn builds coffee makers to last, unlike other coffee makers that will wear out after a year or two.Virtually all programmable models seem to only last a year or two.So by buying this brand, you'll save money on coffee makers, to partly make up for the extra energy and filter costs.

You'll have to decide whether the extra energy and filter costs (which can be dealt with, but might be troublesome) are worth saving the cost of buying a new machine every couple of years.

Next, the carbon footprint of a machine that consistently wastes energy is somewhat (but not all) counterbalanced by the fact that it is made in America , and does not require shipping halfway around the world like some of the better brands (UPDATE: it WAS made in America, now it's made in China, so this benefit does not apply). Additionally, these coffee makers will easily outlast 5x other coffee makers, and that's a lot of plastic you save buy buying something only once.

Finally, the quality of coffee from a flat bottom filter is generally not as high as that you can get from a cone filter, though the differences will be subtle, and if you are used to the flavor of a flat bottom filter, then you may never care. This brand is considered the best of the flat bottom makers, so there may not be as much of a difference as there are for other brands.

As for the heated base keeping your coffee hot, it is also *ruining* the flavor from almost the very first minute.Any real coffee geek will immediately take the pot off the heater and pour it into a thermal carafe or thermos or will order a model with a thermal carafe to start with. Ideally, there is no heated base at all.So people complaining that it doesn't keep the coffee hot should invest in a thermal carafe or buy a model that comes with one.

In summary, the design of these coffee makers is suited to the standard donut shop, where they are brewing coffee around the clock and it is worth it to them to keep extra tanks of water heated so that they can shave 1-3 minutes off the brew time during their peak buying periods.Whether it is worth it for a consumer who makes one or two pots of coffee in the morning to do something like this is something only you can answer for yourself. They are very good coffee makers: well built and they make good coffee. But they cost a lot in terms of energy and filters, though partly balanced by the reduction in number of coffee makers you'll buy over the life of this product and the local nature of the product that reduces the energy required to ship them. It's one thing to have a high cost, but to have the high energy waste these coffee makers will generate for most consumers is something everyone should think about.

Bunn STX Specialty 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer with Thermal Carafe Review

Bunn STX Specialty 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer with Thermal Carafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was one of the first customers of this STX brewer. Full disclosure: Bunn awarded me this Bunn as a result of me winning their video contest earlier this summer. I have used Bunn brewers for about 10 years. This particular thermal model is solidly built compared to their last model which was all plastic, and would kind of bend at the slightest pressure if any were given on the top of the machine. Not so with this one. The quality can even be seen in the grounds basket - not your usual thin plastic basket. This one is very sturdy thick plastic, surrounded by stainless steel. The coffee produced is the usual Bunn quality - great. I've used this brewer every day and it consistently gives me the same quality pot of coffee. An even better value when purchased via stores like Amazon where the price is better than what can be had in your regular retail stores.

Bunn VLPF Professional Automatic Coffee Brewer with 2 Warmers Review

Bunn VLPF Professional Automatic Coffee Brewer with 2 Warmers

Our office finally pitched in and purchased this coffee maker, after years of going through leaky household-type coffee makers. We used to run two coffee makers all day long - probably eight pots per day each. Our new Bunn is faster and can keep up with our demand. Be aware that this Bunn VLPF does NOT include the two decanters pictured. Only when the box arrived, did the outside of the box mention "decanters not included." We've been using it for over a week now and so-far-so-good. I also purchased the extra 3-year warranty, just in case.
