(More customer reviews)I'm returning it since I've given it a week and it has made any impact on air quality at all, in my opinion.I live in Manhattan and am on a lower floor of an apartment building.I get a lot of black residue that manages to get in even when my windows are closed -- this was always picked up by my other air cleaners.In a nutshell, it is extremely easy to see/smell/experience when an air cleaning product is working in my apartment.

Someone broke one of two air cleaners that I owned and I was getting this as a replacement. At the end of this week's run of using the LightAir IonFlow 50C, I moved my other remaining air purifier back into my room and could get results I was used to.The thing is, I need two -- one for the bedroom and one for the living room/dining room area, so I am back to searching.

Almost none of the pictures you see for this product on Amazon for this product match what it looks like; it wasn't a big deal since one of them did actually match -- the rest are pictures of another product by the same company.

Some pros:it was quite easy to set up.I had it up and going within 10 minutes -- most of that time was spent ensuring I met the placement criteria.

Cons:

again, I didn't see any effect at all.

this air cleaner has to be at least three feet from any wall, at least two feet from the ceiling and, ideally, should be even farther away from electronics (I didn't pay too much attention to this measurement since it wasn't relevant in my bedroom).

not exactly a "con," per se, more of a heads up, they mention that the electrical shock you get from touching the cleaner is extremely mild.It was really jarring for me to touch it.Not a deal-breaker, especially since I just had to unplug it to be able to touch the actual body of the appliance.

(More customer reviews)Before I give the bulk of the review, I will just say that after we have had this ionizer on for several days, no one in my house can tell that it does anything at all, and no noticeable change in air quality has been observed. That's enough anecdotal evidence.

If you will observe the picture at the top of the page, you will note the wider portion of the cylinder, right in the middle section. This silver colored section of the "purifier" is claimed to emit negative ions, which supposedly capture the positive ions in the air, because air impurities are positive ions (a myth). This relies on a general ion myth: negative ions good, positive ions bad. Also, if the device generates negative ions, it is also generating positive ions (possibly producing a positively charged ion collector claimed by the company).

Some quotes from the manufacturer's materials to demonstrate their views on chemistry, which you can also read on this Amazon page:

"This large amount of negative ions balances out the overdose of positive ions in indoor air, a balance that is proven to be good for our health. Even more important is its capacity to distribute the negative charge throughout the room and collect particles which is directly related to the large production of negative ions."

"Most harmful pollution generated both by indoor and outdoor sources is positively charged."

"The negative ions attach to the positively charged, harmful particles in the air, such as from dust, pollen allergens, bacteria, mould, pet dander, viruses etc."

(There must be an assumption of not only neutralization of the harmful positively charged pollution, but enough negative ions bonding to the particles to give a net negative charge, in order for those particles to be attracted to the collector, unless they meant something entirely different, which was not explained.)

A little aside at this point from the EPA:

"An ionizer is a device that disperses negatively (and/or positively) charged ions into the air. These ions attach to particles in the air giving them a negative (or positive) charge so that the particles may attach to nearby surfaces such as walls or furniture, or attach to one another and settle out of the air. In recent experiments, ionizers were found to be less effective in removing particles of dust, tobacco smoke, pollen or fungal spores than either high efficiency particle filters or electrostatic precipitators. (Shaughnessy et al., 1994; Pierce, et al., 1996). However, it is apparent from other experiments that the effectiveness of particle air cleaners, including electrostatic precipitators, ion generators, or pleated filters varies widely (U.S. EPA, 1995)."

So, by using a little popular mythology that has no solid, documented, scientific evidence, a company can produce a device like this and sell it for the price you see. That is positively electrifying.

I have found at least one benefit to the device, however. If one remembers the static electricity that remains on the exterior of a television screen after turning off the television (of the CRT type), that is the feel of the air very close to the silver ion generator. If one comes in contact with the generator, a very slight electric shock will ensue, the power of which is approximately 8% of a 1.5v battery (according to the company). This can actually provide entertainment for curious children.

It's a good thing I received one for free evaluation, because personally, I would never pay a single penny for one of these.

Oreck Air Purifier Tabletop XL Professional (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)When I originally reviewed this product I gave it three stars. After using the product for over a year now I would take away two of those stars if I could.

I purchased three Oreck purifiers at the same time and notice very little difference in the air quality in my home.

Things I like:
The "silent" mode is great for sleeping (when the unit isn't popping and snapping). The design is attractive.

Things I don't like:
1) The rapid popping/snapping sound (like a bug zapper) the units make when the cell starts getting dirty. As another reviewer wrote - the rapid popping scared his poor dog so badly that it wet the floor. The noise is VERY annoying. You either clean it right away or turn it off because the snapping persists until something is done. Oreck recommends thorough cell cleaning every two weeks, but between the three units I have to do "quick cleanings" on at least one of them almost every day. Quick cleaning requires pulling the main cell and running a Q-Tip over the wires in front of the collection plates.

2) The Oreck infomercial misrepresents the product; the consumer pays a healthy price for this purifier believing there will be no additional costs associated with the purchase. They advertise "No Filter Replacement" - yet there is an "optional" charcoal odor absorbing filter that does need to be replaced if the unit is used to control odors. The cost of that filter at the Oreck site is $49.99.

According to my local Oreck store, the cell doesn't get real clean if only soaked in soapy water. The "optional" cell cleaner is strongly recommended to optimize the cell performance and extend the cell life. Each can of cell cleaner is $14.99. The local Oreck store recommended cleaning with cell cleaner, soaking in soapy water, and then cleaning again with more cell cleaner.

3) The collection plates in the main cell don't hold a lot of dust, and the odor absorbing filter is too small to catch much. I question how much dust is being pumped back into the air after it is "purified."

*Note: Several reviewers have suggested I use the units in extreme conditions. However, I live in a brand new residence; I don't smoke and have three cats so the operating conditions are far from extreme.

14 MONTH UPDATE:
After using the units for about 14 months, two of the three original machines I purchased died and are happily disposed of. The one remaining unit seems to be working well and actually goes weeks without popping and snapping. I no longer purchase the Oreck cell cleaner, following the advice of another reviewer I now use Clorox Cleanup.

I replaced one of the failed Oreck units with a Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier. I replaced the second failed Oreck with the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air Purifier - this unit is quiet and works so well I purchased two of them. They are all larger floor models that require some space, but they outperform the Oreck units in every way, and are a great value at Amazon. The charcoal pre-filters cost $9.00 to $10.00 to replace and are well worth it when I see the garbage the Honeywell pulls out of the air.

(More customer reviews)I am very sensitive to chemicals.I give the HealthMate Plus credit for saving my life.With it in my home I can handle odors and chemicals from other apartments and the outside.
Mine has been thru neighbors painting, and remodeling.I did have a break down with it and the warranty was honored.They even put an emergency tag on the repair so it was repaired faster.
The newer ones are so much more quieter than the old ones.When I got mine back from the factory I was constantly putting my hand on it to see if it was running.It was just so quiet.
This is one of the first items that I recommend for a chemically sensitive person to buy.
When the box arrived all I had to do was lift the box off and plug it in.It was so well packed I was impressed.

(More customer reviews)I bought the Austin Healthmate Jr. about 2 years ago for a dusty area and have been happy with it.The threethings I like best about it are that you don't have to buy filters very often because you can vacuum the outside of the filter and that it's relatively quiet.The other thing is that it takes air in on all four sides and blows the filtered air out through the top area. It seems to do a good job of filtering the air.It's more energy efficient than air purifiers I've used in the past and it has 3 speeds which is nice.

If you use it in really dusty conditions like mine, you can replace the pre-filter more often than the big filter.I've found this type of material that I could cut to fit at a local hardware store.You get a pre-filter with it.You have to take it apart to replace the pre-filter and filters, but it isn't difficult.You can turn off the machine and vacuum it from the outside and that seems to help the filters last longer.Of course, you'll want to use a vacuum cleaner with a hepa filter or you defeat the purpose.I replace mine about once a year, but I think the average person could go much longer.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't really have any way of measuring how good of a job it really does, only that it seems to do a good job in terms of allergies, odors, etc.There are so many air filters out there and so many claims, that it's hard to sort them out.But if I had to buy a filter for another room, I would probably buy this brand again.

Thermax Mini Max (Large) Water Based Air Purifier/Air Freshener Review

(More customer reviews)I just bought one of these, and have had it running for two weeks now. Here is what you should know. First of all, it was fairly loud out of the box. But over the course of the first week, as the motor broke in, it became a little quieter each day. I was worried that it wasn't doing anything at first, because it really doesn't move much air. But it definately picks up a lot of crud out of the air. The 'clean' water will often become VERY cloudy over the course of 24 hours. The 'smell' addetives they include are not as critical as they make it sound. It cleans the air just fine with plain water. However, if I have company coming over, I may add a drop of the blue stuff just to help freshen up the room a little more.

I finally understand the weakness of a water-based air cleaner compared to the other types. The other ones you can just setup in some corner, and forget about it for weeks. That is not the case with this machine. Because water evaporates, you need to pay attention to this thing every day. Currently, the water goes down from the MAX line to the MIN line in about 24 hours, so I have to add or replace the water every day. I am also worried that this machine will not live very long. It seems cheaply constructed, and I am concerned it might stop working after a few months.

I bought it for a room in my house that honestly does not smell very good. I have tried cleaning it thoroughly, but that doesnt fix the problem. The smell does seem to have diminished quite a bit over these past two weeks that I have been running this machine.

I do recommend this to anyone who is looking for a low budget air cleaner, but with the understanding that you need to keep an eye on it's water level every day. Otherwise, don't bother buying it. It will not do you any good if all the water evaporates.

UPDATE July 2010: I have had this air cleaner running for about half a year now. It is still running. Although the noise level went down at first, it never comes close to being 'quiet'.

NEVER just add water to it. Always dump the water and put fresh water in. How this machine works is it sucks water up the small hole at the bottom of the spindle, and sprays it out the holes at the top of the spindle. The gunk it cleans out of the air will build up inside of the spindle. Eventually these dark clumps will break off and you will see them floating around inside the water, and they can plug up these small holes. You can reduce this problem by putting fresh water in each day insetad of adding water to dirty water.

Cleaning: The Spindle does NOT come apart, so cleaning the crud out isn't easy. I wouldn't recommend adding bleach or some other cleaning agent to the water. You wouldn't want poisonous stuff being spread into the air. I just do my best to clean the crud out of the spindle by blowing into the holes with an air compressor, or sticking small objects into the holes, like toothpicks or twist ties. It's not perfect, but thats about the best you can do without using chemicals.

No where in the reviews did it say that it was an ionizer so we bought it. We had it on for one night, it did a great job cleaning the air and was quiet but when I went to go break down the packaging, I noticed teeny tiny print on the bottom of the box that said: warning: includes ionizer that produces ozone. do not use if you have asthma.

We were both quite upset that we didn't see this warning on Amazon before we bought it. Had to return it! False advertising!

Sanyo ABC-VW24 Air Washer Air Purification System with Electrolyzed Water Technology Review

(More customer reviews)The thing I like best about the Sanyo Air Washer Purification System (besides that it does a great job of purifying the air) is that it has a nice sleek look to it and doesn't detract from the room decor.It has a handle built into the top, making it easy to carry (15.9 lbs.) and it's pretty quiet as air purifiers go.It has a 4-stage HEPA filter removes 99.97% of airborne particles and allergens. The other thing I really like is that the filters can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and are supposed to last for about 4 years.(You'd want to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner or you'd defeat the purpose.) I called customer service to ask about the price of replacement filters and they told me the suggested retail price is $69.That's pretty much in line with other filters I've researched.The customer service people were very helpful in answering questions about the unit which I count as a big plus.

I don't know if the electrolyzed water technology is just a gimmick or not, but the unit does a good job of cleaning the air and removing odors from any room that I place it in. There are several articles on the internet about electrolyzed water technology and electrolyzed water being used to sanitize water and possibly use it to kill bacteria in a number of applications including using it as a non-toxic way to clean fruits and vegetables in the food industry.It would make sense that it could be useful to kill bacteria and viruses in the air.With pets and all their dander, not to mention all the pollen and dust in the air this time of year, it gets a real workout around here.I hope that we find that we have fewer colds in the winter.

Just a few details that I didn't include in the video:I measured the watts that the unit takes at the low, medium and high speeds with a P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor device.At low speed it uses 4 - 8 watts (the higher number when it's emitting the electrolyzed water.You'll see that in the video.), on medium 13 - 17 watts, on high 57 - 63 watts, and if you use the "power" setting, 63 - 65 watts.This compares favorably with other air cleaners that I've used in the past or use now and it seems to work more quickly at removing odors.

BTW, another reviewer had mentioned that the "Device contains a chemical known to the state of Caifornia to cause cancer, birth defects, etc."Living in California I'm used to seeing these warnings on just about every piece of electrical equipment I buy due to the "Prop 65" laws here.Nonetheless, when I called Sanyo, I asked about this warning and what part of the unit had the chemical.As I expected it is the lead in the electrical cord connection, the same as my computer.When handling electrical cords it's always a good idea to wash your hands afterward.

I hope the video is useful.It's difficult to tell from a small photo what the unit looks like and I wanted you to have a better idea of how it worked and what it sounds like.
