The filter intake barely could hold a tissue in place, so you can tell there is really not much volume passing through. The fans are not strong enough to pull air through the filter. The filter medium is just too thick and air does not easily pass through. The ozone feature deoderizes, but I wanted air purification. We noticed no difference in air quality. Go with a better known brand like the Hamilton Beach. To the reviewer who suggested the filter cover may not have been removed - the perforated cover was removed.

(More customer reviews)These filter replacements are very easy to install.You just turn the machine upside-down, unloosen 4 screws and remove the cover. Then pull out the dirty filter and pre-filter and discard in a plastic bag, wipe out the interior with a damp cloth and put in the new filter and pre-filter.It took me about 5 minutes to complete the whole operation.These filters are supposed to last 5 years but I use it in a room that is quite dusty and find that 3 years is about right.It still is cheaper than filters I've used in the past that had to be replaced more often.

I bought the Austin Healthmate Jr. about 5 years ago when I was looking for a HEPA filter and have been happy with it. The three things I like best about it are that you don't have to buy filters very often because you can vacuum the outside of the filter and that it's relatively quiet. The other thing is that it takes air in on all four sides and blows the filtered air out through the top area. It seems to do a good job of filtering the air. It's more energy efficient than air purifiers I've used in the past and it has 3 speeds which is nice.

If you use it in really dusty conditions like mine, you can replace the pre-filter more often than the big filter. I've found this type of material that I could cut to fit at a local hardware store. You get a pre-filter with it. You have to take it apart to replace the pre-filter and filters, but it isn't difficult. You can turn off the machine and vacuum it from the outside and that seems to help the filters last longer. Of course, you'll want to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter or you defeat the purpose. I replace mine about once a year, but I think the average person could go much longer.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't really have any way of measuring how good of a job it does, only that it seems to do a good job in terms of allergies, odors, etc. There are so many air filters out there and so many claims, that it's hard to sort them out. But if I had to buy a filter for another room, I would probably buy this brand again.

#401 Healthy Climate Solutions MERV 10 Replacement Filter Media for Aprilaire & Spacegard 2400 Review

(More customer reviews)Great for saving money but takes 10-15 minutes to set up properly since you have to remove the old clips and install this new filter. Since I'm dumb, it took me 35 minutes because I didn't fan it correctly the first time. You have to space each fold of the accordian design into each spacer correctly and not skip any. It has a learning curve and will be easier next time. There is an easier product that has the frame alreay built but it's more expensive. Also, there is a permanent model that you can wash but I couldn't find it on Amazon since buying my new furnace summer 2008 and needing the replacement Spring 2009. The washable permanent model would definitely be my cup of tea if I can find it again. But this is your cheapest alternative for the time being, if you require a #401 MERV 10 filter.
