I purchased this for two Mississippi Map Turtles. It runs pretty quiet, though there is a little bit of vibration depending on what it is stuck to but for the most part you have to listen to hear it. I noticed that it works a lot better and more efficient if you buy the activated carbon in a carton not made by ZooMed. ZooMed makes little carbon pellets that do not seem to work as well as the carbon chips that you can buy for fish filters, which are cheaper since you can buy them in bulk. You only need to fill the little lid inside the filter and one carton can last a while depending on how much you change it. Once I changed the activated carbon my water was crystal clear within a couple of days. The sponges can usually be washed under the tap and scrubbed if needed. I would not suggest using soap, and they should not need to be replaced as consistently as the carbon does unless they no longer come clean.
