Vicks Vaporizer with Night-Light Review

Vicks Vaporizer with Night-Light

I have this exact unit. It works constantly, with no problems at all.
A pinch of salt, and it steams away and shuts off automatically when low.
I love the simplicity of this unit.
After years of using all the different fancy new kinds of humidifiers that need constant cleaning and special filters and antibacterial crap, this is very nice. No muss, no fuss, just moisture in the air.
The black stuff in the water is normal and is not gross, as someone said in another review.

Yh Lh Vicks 1.5 Gal Vaporizer Review

Yh Lh Vicks 1.5 Gal Vaporizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this unit to help humidify our house in the winter.Past experiences with cool mist humidifiers were poor - having to clean mysterious brown gunk off the electronic innards was disturbing. If you're like me, you'll pretend you don't see the brown gunk. This strategy works great until the gunk becomes a pulsating biohazard that threatens to move about on its own.Warm mist humidifiers don't seem to have this problem. The Vicks Vaporizer looked a bit wimpy, but with itchy skin and static electricity zapping about, anything was better than nothing.Besides, it's cheap.

First, the unit puffs out warm odorless steam as advertised. The manual says you have to add salt to the water to really get the steam going and warns vaguely about blowing fuses if you get carried away. This made me curious, so I got out my Kill-A-Watt power meter (very cool gadget by the way) to see how much juice this thing used.Turns out it REALLY matters how much salt you add.The vaporizer was puffing steam like crazy, and using over a kilowatt of power.I emptied and refilled the water, adding the maximum recommended amount of salt (1/4 teaspoon).Steam production was still fine at a more reasonable 450 Watts.

Since I had the power meter hooked up, I wondered just how efficiently the Vicks produced steam.450 Watts running all night is enough to want my money's worth. So, I performed a test.I filled the tank with exactly 192 ounces of room temperature water, added the salt, and plugged it into the power meter for the night.By morning it was done and the power meter read 0 Watts. There was still quite a bit of water in the tank, which I measured to be 50 ounces. The power meter said 3.15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) had been used. So, it took 3.15 kWh to vaporize 192 - 50 = 142 ounces of room temperature water. Is this reasonable?I calculated the energy required to vaporize 142 ounces of water as:
Energy to raise 142 oz from 21.1 C to 100 C = 0.37 kWh
Energy to boil 142 oz at 100 C = 2.53 kWh
Total = 2.9 kWh

So, the Vicks is about 92% energy efficient. Not bad.

Our electricity costs 8.3 cents per kWh, so the vaporizer costs me 26 cents per tank.

I'm very happy with the Vicks considering the price.Rather than spend much more on a big unit, I'll just buy a couple more of these.

To summarize:

The Good
* Uses no energy when tank runs low.Good for safety and economy.
* 92% energy efficient (about 26 cents of electricity per tank).
* Except for the steam itself, no outside surfaces get hot.
* Has a little light on top so you don't bump it in the dark.

The Bad (minus 1 star)
* Can't vaporize a full 1.5 gallons.Leaves about a quarter tank.
* Black particles appear in the tank. They don't stick to anything and rinse away easily.I suspect these are some electrolytic byproduct from running electricity through the salty water.

This is a very nice vaporizer. You do have to use the pinch of salt as indicated by the manufacturer, but that's about it.It runs like a dream and is great for a baby's room.I clean mine nightly before using it because I just don't want to have to worry about bacteria build-up.It's very quiet, does the job, and I've used it myself for colds.A very nice investment for a good product.

Water is one nutrient that all forms of life must have to survive. All functions of your body require sufficient moisture to work properly. When your body does not have sufficient moisture, it functions poorly. Dry, arid climatic conditions are usually the culprit. Colds and flu can further cause dehydration.
Colds and flu begin making their seasonal rounds during fall and winter. Part of the reason for increased respiratory illness during this time is because the humidity level in the air reaches its yearly lows. Central heating units in homes and offices further remove moisture from the air. The relative humidity may drop to as low as 10% -- drier than the air in the Sahara Desert. Most people experience problems when the relative humidity drops below 25%. A comfortable humidity level should not be higher than 50%.
The steam vaporizer helps combat this excessive dryness, providing these benefits:
Keeps your respiratory system moist, allowing it to fight off bacteria, viruses and pollutants.
Relieves cold, flu and hay fever symptoms.
Relieves dry, irritated and itching skin and eyes.
Relieves coughs and dry, scratchy throat.
Helps you breathe better and sleep more comfortably.
Stops dryout damage to plants, paintings and furniture.
Saves you money on your heating bills, since proper humidity lets you feel more comfortable at lower temperatures.
Kaz invented the electric vaporizer in 1924 and today is the world's leading manufacturer of vaporizers, humidifiers and other healthcare appliances.

Vicks 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier Review

Vicks 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier
Average Reviews:

We've had this humidifier for about 2 years now and use it only occasionally. The reason we use it sparingly is because it is way too loud. It has a very annoying vibrational noise that can be damped by pushing down hard on the lid.Since I can't stand next to it pushing the lid down all night, we have to put up with the amazingly loud humming. The other problem with this humidifier is that it is hard to clean inside the tube that draws-up the water. It is removable, but you need to have pipe-cleaners to get inside it. The non-removable disc in the lid is also filled with gunk that I can't get out. Save your money!

So far I really like my new Slant/Fin GF-240 1.9 Ga Germ-Free Cool Mist Evaporative Humidifier. The features I like best about it are the large capacity water tank, the ease of filling the tank, the use of tap water without getting mineral deposits and white dust, and its quietness on low fan. This humidifier is much better than the last two I owned. The first was a cool mist machine that sprayed fine droplets of water all over the room. The other was a hot mist machine that clogged up with minerals in the water and had to be cleaned with Lime Away about once per week.Needless to say, we have very hard water, but I have had no problems using it in my new Slant/Fin GF-320 humidifier.

Keeping air humidified, especially in winter months, helps keep respiratory systems adequately hydrated to prevent colds and other discomfort. How are we certain that the water we're using is free of any pathogenic microbes? Slant Fin GF-240 1.9 Gallon Germ-Free Cool Mist Evaporative Humidifier uses UltraViolet (UV) rays to help eliminate those potentially harmful germs.
Ultraviolet light (UV) is an invisible wavelength of the light we receive from the sun. The frequency of this light irritates and destroys pathogenic and infectious microbes. UV is used to sterilize medical equipment. Humidification is therapeutic in dry areas because its helps keep breathing passages moist enough to prevent bacteria and viruses from infecting them. Yet water can have naturally occurring microbes as well. The Slant Fin GF-240 cool mist humidifier uses UV to eliminate harmful microbes from entering the air as mist. UV is the most effective way to sterilize the water without any harmful odors or chemical agents. So breathe deeply, safely, and sound when you use the Slant Fin GF-240 Humidifier to humidify the air in your room. It takes health to a higher level of performance. It's safer for allergy and asthma sufferers (please contact physician prior to use).

Essick Air D46 720 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, Titanium Charcoal Review

Essick Air D46 720 4-Speed Tower Humidifier, Titanium Charcoal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this is a great humidifier.

SIZE: The tower shape of the unit makes it perfect for environments where there is more wall space to consume than floor space. It's fairly large: as a point of reference, it rises a little higher than the arms of my living room sofas and it's rectangular shape is about the size of a magazine, plus about 1.5" on each side for the two tanks.

CONTROLS: The digital controls makes it pretty easy to operate. It's a simple, two-button interface with an easy-to-read display. The automatic humidistat can be set from 25-65% (at 10% intervals). The current and desired humidity level are shown side-by-side on the display using indicator bars. When set a desired humidity level, the automatic humidistat will run the unit until the current humidity reading is 10% higher than your preference, then turn it off until the current reading drops to 10% lower than your preference. This is a pretty nice feature - it saves power and conserves water so you don't have to refill the reservoirs as frequently. You can also choose to run the unit continuously by not setting a preferred humidity level.

FAN NOISE: There are four fan speeds. The first three speeds are all very quiet and wouldn't be disruptive (or even noticeable) in most settings. The fourth and highest setting is more noticeable, sounding something like a microwave oven but slightly softer and quieter. It might be enough to make you turn up the TV a little while watching the news, but really no worse than that.

DISPLAY: The display also has a green power indicator and a red indicator to let you know when both reservoirs are empty (the unit will stop when this is the case until at least one reservoir is refilled). I did find it kind of odd that the product uses LED bars to display the humidity levels and two-digit numeric readout for the fan speed (even though the highest speed setting is only 4). It almost seems to me that these should be reversed, but that doesn't really reduce the effectiveness of the unit and the interface is still pretty easy to read and use as designed.

SETUP & USE: The unit is fairly easy to setup and maintain. The two wick units and the plastic grill covers that enclose them can be a little cumbersome when snapping them in and out of place. This is not a particularly big problem, since the wick units only need to be replaced at the beginning of each season to avoid mineral buildup.

The two reservoirs, on the other hand, are very easy to remove and replace while the unit is operating. Each is the full height of the unit and about 2 inches thick with a simple click-latch fixing them snugly to the unit's sides. Despite their large and odd shape, they're surprisingly easy to fill even at a small bathroom sink. They each can hold a little more than their rated 1.5 gallons when topped off and the fill-caps hold this amount without leaking. The instructions say that the water level in these tanks is "easily visible" from the sides. The water level can be seen from the sides, but I wouldn't describe it as "easily"; the dark tint makes it pretty difficult to see from any distance. I often have to gently rock the unit a little to find the surface of the water move before I can judge.

When this unit is running continuously at full speed, it can run through both reservoirs twice in a single day (that two times each, or 6 gallons total). Unless your environment is *extremely* dry, I think that's about the max. With more practical and conservative settings, they only need to be filled every 2-4 days, which is a much more relaxed refill schedule to keep.

The unit does work well even for larger, dryer spaces. You'll be able to notice an immediate difference in the air near the humidifier as soon as you start it, and the effect radius grows pretty quickly - especially on the highest speed setting.

SUMMARY: All in all, this is a nice multi-room humidifier that looks good, fits easily, works well and is easy to operate with a nice feature set for it's price range.

VaporGenie Classic Vaporizing Pipe Review

VaporGenie Classic Vaporizing Pipe

It took me a couple of tries to get the hang of using this thing, but now that I have, it works wonderfully.I find it a good way to conserve my legal herbs --smoking destroys some of the actives, so vapor is an alternative that allows maximum potency. It's also more discreet. There is still a pleasant herbal odor but you don't get that strong burning smell. The vapor tastes awesome compared to smoke too, again just a pleasant herbal taste. And of best of all, it's easy on my lungs! The only thing I would like is if they gave it a longer/flexible mouthpiece so you can more easily see what you're doing when lighting it. I added a 5" length of rubber tubing over the mouthpiece of mine and it's now by far the favorite piece in my collection.Still worth 5 stars for the price (compared to other vaporizers out there), effectiveness and overall satisfaction.

All I can say to those who posted poor reviews, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you're trying to pull the flame into the chamber with the herb it will taste horrible and will not work correctly. The very first time I used this I accidentally pulled the flame against the filter. It tasted horrible and I didn't get any vapor.I also have made the mistake of putting too much herb in the bowl. The result was burned herb.Less is more with this method!

Product Description:
This is a VaporGenie Classic pipe in Maple. The bowl, screen and filter top threads are made of stainless steel. The black mouth-tip is optional and can easily be removed by pulling it out.

The VaporGenie pipe is lead free and the paint (water-based acrylic) does not contain lead. No glues or adhesives are used in the VaporGenie Classic pipe.

The VaporGenie pipe relies on a totally new concept to provide the 'sweet-spot' vaporization temperatures of 225-375 degrees. The secret to the VaporGenie pipe is the patented flame filter. The flame filter is located above your tobacco (between the tobacco and flame). In the pictures, the flame filter is located within the spherical wood part. The flame filter is specially designed to mix the flame and cool air and provide vaporization temperatures.

The flame filter is specially designed to withstand the flame heat for many years. It is made of an extremely durable and nontoxic ceramic: silicon carbide.

The VaporGenie pipe is used in a manner very similar to a conventional pipe. That's what makes it so easy to use.

First, the VaporGenie pipe is loaded with tobacco, and then the flame filter is screwed onto the pipe. It is important to use loose, shredded tobacco; do not pack.

Then, you inhale from the pipe while supplying flame to the flame filter. The flame filter automatically protects the tobacco from burning. You control the exact temperature by adjusting the amount of flame applied and speed of inhalation. It is important to not touch the ceramic filter with the flame.

By paying attention to the flavors and heat inhaled, you know the temperature, and can adjust flame application accordingly.

This is a Maple VaporGenie. More styles, colors and products are available on the VaporGenie website.

The Holmes Group HM5250UC Warm Mist Humidifier for Small Rooms Review

The Holmes Group HM5250UC Warm Mist Humidifier for Small Rooms
Average Reviews:

I would have rated this a 5 star if the cleaning was easier, but I do not know if such a humidifier exists.
We have hard water and the build up of scale was becoming a problem, even with daily cleaning (yes, you should clean this unit daily). I came up with a solution to reduce and almost eliminate the scale - I add a teaspoon of baking soda to the tank when I refill it. The scale is drastically reduced and the unit runs at a whisper quiet. I originally ran the unit without the baking soda and there was some noise, mainly gurgling, that was too loud for me since I am a light sleeper.

There is a black covered heating element that requires cleaning to remove scale. This can be very difficult to remove. I solved this as part of the weekly maintenance when you use vinegar to clean the base. The part with the heating element rests on the base. By adding enough vinegar to fill the well where the heating element engages with the base, and allowing it to soak for 10 or 15 minutes, the scale is easily removed.

I like the warm mist because it helps warm up the room.

Overall, I believe this unit is a great value.

Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier with Auto Shut-Off Review

Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier with Auto Shut-Off
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I knew i needed a humidifier, as i'm just not used to the dry air of east coast winters. But after shopping around on amazon for warm mist humidifiers, i was horrified by the reviews. Every humidifier seemed to be loud, leaky, and a hassle. I ended up getting this one because of the relatively low price, thinking that if it was as bad as all the others, at least i wouldn't have spent too much on it.

I have no complaints.

On the low setting, it's about as loud as a pot of water boiling in the next room. On the high setting, it might compete with a pot of water boiling in the same room. Every once in a while it gets a bit talkative, but that's rare and doesn't last long. I'm a light sleeper, and this unit never wakes me up.

On the low setting, a full tank of water lasts a little over 24 hours. On the high setting, it goes through in about 8 to 9 hours, perfect to run overnight.

The auto-shutoff works just fine, so i don't even bother turning it off before i leave the house.

It is a bit annoying to clean the unit, but that has a lot to do with the tap water here being less than perfectly clean. We switched to using filtered water, and now the humidifier is actually our way of knowing when to change the filter. When there's build-up on the heating element, the filter isn't working as well anymore.

The daily maintenance takes no more than a few minutes. The weekly maintenance takes longer, but that's mainly because you throw some of the pieces in to soak. It's maybe 10 minutes of effort, plus however long you want to soak the pieces.

In all, i'm very glad i purchased this unit. (And the water tank isn't nearly as blue as it looks in the picture.)
