(More customer reviews)I wanted to put an evap cooler in our upstairs bedroom but the window where it would go was too narrow.I checked all the reviews and descriptions I could find on several different web sites and decided to go for this portable unit. It has large water capacity, easy to move, can use as a fan only, add ice for real cool air, easy to add water, is quiet enough we left it on one night while we slept.Fan force good, it really moves the air on "high".Haven't emptied it yet, we have had 100 degree weather so it has been on every day. The "humidity" controller basically just determines how much water flows over the filters.The unit does not cool the room like a window evap unit would, but I do recommend it to take the temperature down 15-20 degrees.I am very glad I purchased this product and if I needed another cooler I would get this one again. It actually isn't too bad to look at either.

(More customer reviews)There are so many things wrong with this unit that I'm surprised I've managed to remember them all.Some other reviewers have touched base on them already, but here are the details:

* You put water and/or ice in the top of the unit; you cannot put water where the ice is and vice-versa.The area where you pour water into is about 3x2 inches in size (yes, really!), while the area for ice is about 7x3 inches.You literally need a funnel or a small plastic tube to fill the unit up with water (see below).But it gets worse...

* Easily the biggest flaw: the water/melted ice goes down a tube and literally into the casing of the unit!There is no water tank, or centralized hold for liquids.The entire bottom of the unit is the "tank", if you can even call it that.

* The two cooling packs provided contain some sort of cheap coolant liquid inside of them -- they do cool quite well, but here's the problem: they'rephysically too large.The cooling packs are dropped into the bottom of the casing (where the water is), right into the water.They don't mount inside anywhere.

* The "door" for the cooling packs is too small for my hand (and I have small hands), which makes removing the cooling packs impossible.It took me a good 5 minutes using a pair of plastic pliers to grab a pack and remove it.The door is held shut with magnets, which is admittedly nice. But the door empties right into the water "tank", which means you might as well fill it up from the side and not the top!What were they thinking when they engineered this thing?!

* Water pump is a pump intended for aquariums.If you open up the back of the unit (which you have to do for water filter cleaning; see below), you can peek inside and see quite clearly printed on the pump "AQUARIUM PUMP". Most aquarium pumps I know are loud, not soft/quiet nor do they hum; and because the pump is screw-mounted to the bottom of the unit (which is plastic), I'm left thinking the entire unit must vibrate heavily when powered on.This makes you question the production quality of this item.

* Water refill line is recessed deep inside the unit due to how the plastic casing is molded; it's impossible to read, and it's incredibly important (see above) to not go above a certain fill line.If you go above the line, water will start to come out of the front of the unit, and the rear of the unit (bottom of where the air filter starts).

* The air/lint filter on the back is easily removable.However, to clean the water filter, you must remove 6 screws and proceed to wiggle/wobble plastic pieces until you pull the back of the unit out.Why screws?Why not some retention plastic, or a clip?Better yet, why not magnets like the ones used on the coolant door?You cannot remove it entirely, because attached to it (permanently) is a bright orange hose connected somewhere within the unit; it has no slack.You need 3-4 hands to do this job.

* The water filter itself is what looks to be nylon webbing, identical to what some people use in a clothes hamper.It's just some cheap mesh with some Velcro on it so you can remove it semi-easily.

* Manual states you must clean the water filter every 2 weeks.Yup, you get to disassemble the unit that often.Fun for the whole family?

* Much to my amusement, the drainage spout (if you need to drain the unit) is directly behind where the AC power cord is.Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea?

Should you avoid this product?Absolutely.I'm left wishing I could give this thing negative stars; seriously, SPT should be ashamed for engineering something like this.I realize it's somewhat inexpensive, but what you get for under a hundred US dollars isn't even worth it.

(More customer reviews)The AF-330 NewAir Evaporative Swamp Cooler with Special HEPA Air Purifier is a pretty good swamp cooler with just a couple of flaws.As with all swamp coolers, it isn't going to make your room feel air conditioned, but in dry climates, it is good to sleep with it blowing over you, or it is good to get raise the humidity levels somewhat.Now for the good stuff first about this unit.

For starters, the 13-liter water tank means that you won't have to fill it as often.Most portable swamp coolers I've owned only had a 10-liter tank which means they don't last more than 8-hours on "cool."There's also an ice tray to add ice for additional cooling effect.

Next on the plus list are the air filter system.In addition to the standard foam filter, it comes with a HEPA filter and a carbon filter.Combined with the ION setting, this really seemed to make an improvement in air quallity.After a month of use, I haven't noticed the normal "swamp stench" that swamp coolers usually get.I don't know if those filters are the reason or not, but there you go.

The fan is much more powerful than any previous portable swamp cooler I've owned.Even at the low setting, the fan works pretty good when sleeping in front of it.

The controls are pretty standard.You get the 1-8 hour timer, oscillating louver control, 3 fan speeds, "cool" function (to activate the swamp cooler function), and ION control.The unit comes with a handy remote control which handles all features, which is great for controling the unit while in bed. ^_^

There were two negatives.The biggest is adding water to the tank.The portable swamp coolers I've owned before have had a convienent port on the side of the unit were one can add a gallon of water to the tank in a few seconds.This unit has no such port.Instead, water has to be added to the top of the unit where a small section is partitioned off from the ice tray to add water.As such, it only holds a small amount of water and the drain into the tank isn't very large.So it can take a couple of minutes to empty a gallon of water into the tank.That's pretty tedious, especially when you are tired and just want to go to sleep.

The other problem I had was with the documentation.As you note, the product description proudly mentions the carbon filter.The box the unit comes in proudly mentions this.And a carbon filter comes sealed with the unit.Initially, I thought that maybe this was some sort of water filter since I've used carbon filters for fish tanks and for water pitchers.However, there is NOTHING in the documentation that says anything about the carbon filter.The regular foam air filter and the HEPA filter are mentioned, but that's it.Since it didn't seem to obviously go into the water tank (that is a bit of a pain to get to) and it did fit the back panel where the air filters are, I put it back there.But does it go before or after the HEPA filter?Some documentation would have been nice.

The final negative about the unit is purchasing replacement filters.I found none on Amazon's site. Air & Water, the company from which the unit actually came, has a website, and while ordering the unit directly from them gives you the option to purchase additional filters, their website has no place to just purchase replacement filters.That's pretty stupid if you ask me.

Bottom line: There are many good things about this swamp cooler to include the HEPA filter, carbon filter, larger water tank, ION feature, and greater fan power.The lack of a good water input port, no information about the carbon filter, and a lack of ease to aquire replacement filters weren't enough to stop me from giving this an overall "buy" recommendation.

(More customer reviews)This unit is nothing to write home about but I guess it serves its purpose.I purchased this fan for my small studio apartment.To be honest I'm slightly disappointed.If you are looking for a medium sized unit for an office or small apartment this unit does help.

That being said, don't be misled by the air cooling feature.This is not an air conditioner and will only give you slightly cooler air flow.The fan on high isn't really powerful.The two reusable ice packs are nice so that you can rotate them in.The timer control works well so that you can set it to run when you leave or go to sleep and it will continue to run for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours.The setup and controls are very user friendly.You can get this unit up and running within 2 minutes of opening the box.

I don't think I would buy this unit again.I'd probably look for something with a higher speed fan or something that cools the air a little bit better.

(More customer reviews)First off, this is NOT an air conditioner.If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you.It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well.It works by evaporating water.Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect.It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.
I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely.I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.
Benefits:
* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner
* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning
* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)
* remote control

Drawbacks:
* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

(More customer reviews)I was scheduled for a business to Arizona and I knew I could not stand that heat. So I shopped for a misting fan on amazon and came across this. I had my doubts since I never seen anything like this, but I was convinced by the positive reviews this product achieved. Although I've been using misting fans for the last two decades, I find this hand held swamp cooler idea a really cool idea - literally! The product cools the air well enough like a misting fan, AND it doesn't require me to pump air into a cylinder or spray water all over myself. However if you want to take it out, you need to use alkaline batteries which die out in a few hours. I use my own rechargeable batteries and it works fine. The product is designed to be held in the hands like a handy-cam. It is not too heavy or big. The hand strap included is very comfortable.

What I will complain about is the high price tag. It is much more expensive than alternative cooling options such as the misting fans and cooling bandannas. But you get what you pay for.

BTW the product does come in a nicely packaged retail box which shows where all my money went! I rather them just send it in a cardboard box and charge me less!

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to make this purchase again, and I'd replace this unit with the same if needed.
