The water travels a bit slower through the filter than most carafe types because it takes longer to ACTUALLY filter out what you don't want in your water. If the water goes through too fast it is not really catching all the unwanted particles. Further, every so often the filter material becomes dense (and the water flows slower). All you have to do is remove the filter and bang it a couple of times on a counter edge to redistribute the material inside. Then it will flow faster again.
