After reading the reviews and seeing several advertisements, I decided to purchase the Venta LW14 for my bedroom. Venta products are German made and considering the 200.00 price tag, you might say they are the Mercedes of Humidifier/Air cleaners. Besides, Venta's advertising claims that Siegfried & Roy as well as Jose` Carreras are customers, so it's got to be good right?

The LW14 uses a very simple and efficient design of a small 2-speed fan that blows across a housing which holds 1.2 gallons of water. In the water housing lies a molded stack of 40 discs. (Picture a stack of your old '45' records all spaced about one tenth of an inch apart.) This 'disc stack' is slowly turned by a plastic gear set which is attached to the bottom of the fan shaft. As the turning wet discs are exposed to the blown fan air, the theory is that, the water will evaporate off the discs into the air and dust particles in the air are attracted to the wet discs and then deposited in the water basin. As dry, dirty air is drawn in through the top, clean and humidified air is blown out the sides of the unit. It is a great yet simple design idea.

The unit does not require any filter pads but instead requires the Venta Treatment Additive every 10-14 days. Each packet contains 1.5 fl oz. and you get two packets in the box to start. Replacements come in a box of 10 packets for about 17.00 and can be purchased at Bed & Bath or on-line through Venta or other sources. I can state from experience, that the unit will hardly evaporate any water without using this additive. According to Venta's user guide, the additive contains `wetting' and `softening' agents that make the water 'sheet' off the discs instead of 'bead' off. They also state that the additive prevents calcium and lime build up making the unit easier to clean and that it helps eliminate odors and bacteria in the water basin as well. You should refill the basin daily and then rinse it out completely and refill every 10-14 days with fresh water and an additive packet. Venta states that every six months the unit should get a through cleaning with another chemical the sell, Venta Cleaner(15.00 per bottle, one bottle needed per cleaning). Venta adds that a solution of vinegar and water can be used in place of the special cleaner.

I purchased the LW14 several weeks ago from a local Bed Bath & Beyond Store. During unpacking, I noticed a small black piece of broken plastic. I could not find anything broken at first so I took this as a piece of assembly 'flash' as found when building plastic models. I ran the unit from 7PM to 7AM in my bedroom for three nights. On the third night, I heard a clicking noise that I found emanated from the plastic gear set that turns the disc stack. I called Venta directly and the representative advised me to swap the unit out at Bed & Bath so I did so.

Oddly, the second new unit had the same mysterious plastic piece in the bottom of the box. I ran the second unit, and after a few days, I again noticed the clicking noise. Further inspection also revealed a broken plastic top latch. This was the mysterious plastic `piece' but did not explain the recurrence of the click noise. This latch is a part of Venta's '1 Click' design that makes the top motor housing easy to open for cleaning. I called Venta and they were great. They stated that this latch was part of the fan motor so they sent me out a new fan motor as well as a new gear set to cure the click noise.

Now I installed the replacement fan motor, but strangely, I found that it was much louder and spun much faster, on both speeds, as the initial two units. With this new faster replacement fan, I found it was too loud to have in my bedroom, even on the low speed setting. I called Venta again to inquire. The Venta representative was surprised and did not realize that the replacement fans were faster and louder than the fans that the units are shipped with right out of the box.

In any event, I decided to reinstall the initial fan with the broken latch, that came with the second unit, and I paired it up with the replacement gear set which eliminated the click noise.

I have an expensive humidity monitor in my bedroom and I have seen an increase in humidity from 40% to 52% with the LW14 running on low speed all night. Oddly, the unit is only losing about an inch of water in this time period. (Venta claims that the LW14 can use all 1.2 gallons of water in a 24-hour period in dry rooms.)

To Summarize: The LW14 does humidify well and I believe it is also cleaning the air as advertised. Gear noise, inferior plastic pieces are an issue as well as inconsistent replacement parts. I don't believe these problems should exist on a 200.00 German made humidifier. The customer service is very professional and the unit has a 10-year warranty. I have decided to keep the unit even with these service issues.

Haier HLP21N 6.6-Pound Pulsator Wash with Stainless Steel Tub Review

Haier HLP21N 6.6-Pound Pulsator Wash with Stainless Steel Tub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I estimate that I have used this washer for 4 loads each week since buying from J&R in early October, 2006.I live in a studio in New York and bought this one because (1) it has a sink adapter, which the front-loading 14.3-lb model didn't seem to include and (2) at 17.5 inches wide/deep, it fit through my bathroom door, which the front-loading 14.3-lb model (at 20.5 inches wide) wouldn't.

Out of the box, you have to install an included metal pan at the bottom.Install it so that it is convex: there's a reason that the legs are so high. One of the problems I had during installation was that one of the screws holding this metal pan to the body comes very close to a clamp holding the gooseneck drain tube as it exits the body. The clamp had fallen out of position, and the end of the screw is close to where the clamp goes.I don't think I was ever in danger of puncturing the drainage tube, but it's something to watch out for.

You need a place to hang the drainage tube, between 31.5 and 40 inches high. The machine cannot fill the tub with water to a height above the maximum height of the drainage path.

On my first two loads, I made a puddle of water on the ground. There were two reasons for this: the first time, the water supply hose was not tightened sufficiently at the machine end, and water dribbled out and behind the machine until I figured out what was going on.With that tightened (I used a wrench), there was no leak.On my second load, I put in too many clothes (more about that later) and there was a water-resistant nylon jacket on top.Just before the very first spin cycle, some water was cupped on that jacket and did not drain out with the wash water. When the tub started to spin, that water came out.I never loaded that many clothes into the washer again, and haven't had any spills since.

During a normal wash cycle, the machine does the following steps three times: fill, agitate, agitate, drain, spin, drain, spin, drain, spin. The second and third iterations are called the "rinse" cycle.Often, the water out of the drain is still bubbly after the second spin. (I use a quarter capful or less of All no-fragrance 3x liquid concentrate.) So, I run another rinse cycle. If the machine detects an unbalance condition during a spin, it will stop, fill the tub with water, and agitate in an attempt to redistribute the clothes before draining and spinning again.I think the machine does this two or three times before giving up and beeping ten times to alert the user of the unbalance condition.

During the agitation process, this machine tends to intertwine long or extended parts of clothing --- shirt sleeves and socks --- into braid-like knots, which often trigger the unbalance condition during the subsequent spin. For example, when I wash four or five long-sleeved shirts together, I always have to untie and separate two or three of the shirts where the sleeves have been twisted together.I think good washing is where the wash water can touch every surface of the clothes, and being tied together prevents this. These problems probably would not happen with a front-loading washing machine.

What is the capacity of this washer?Well, I would say:

2 bath towels; or
2 pairs of jeans or pants; or
2 sweatshirts and 1 pair of sweat pants; or
4 long-sleeved oxford shirts; or
6 small-size undershirts; or
8-12 medium-size boxer underwear.

That's at the "high" water level. You may be able to load more than that, but I think the clothes won't get as clean, and the machine will probably reach more unbalance situations.

I once tried to wash a terrycloth robe. The robe fit in the tub, but the machine always got to an unbalance condition when it tried to spin.I think it's sort of like trying to run a centrifuge with only one tube.Sometimes after the spin cycle I find a sock or a shirt stretched across the middle of the tub, instead of having been thrown centrifugally against the tub walls.

Using my DSC-P71 digital camera in the multi-burst 30 frames-per-second mode and a light and a dark shirt in the washer, I estimate the initial spin at 450 rpm (light shirt passed once every 4 frames) and a final spin at 780 rpm (light shirt passed about 6.5 times in 0.5 seconds - about once every other frame). If I hang the clothes in my studio (not in the bathroom), then they dry in about one day or less, depending on the humidity. It takes much longer if I hang them in the bathroom.

Update (November 2007): This machine is still running. After a year, here are my comments:

After getting tired of the drain tube clamp falling out, I made two small wedges out of a folded-up credit card to hold the clamp in place.

I made a third spill (and this one was a big one): once, the gooseneck drain hose came apart from the U-shaped drain-pipe hook. So, now I check that connection every week or so.

I always run an extra rinse cycle (or two).If I have time, during the spin cycles, I lower the drain tube to allow more sudsy water to drain out.(This is a high-maintenance tactic, though --- it can lead to floods if you're not careful.)Some types of clothes absorb and retain more water (and detergent) than others, and my skin is better after more of the detergent is rinsed out.You can take just-washed clothes from a standard washing machine and re-rinse them here to check how much detergent is left.

Update (April 2008): In the past two months, I have had two more major spills. Both times, it seems that the water-level sensor got stuck and failed to tell the inlet valve to shut off. When this happens, the water overflows the tub and comes out the bottom of the machine.(Usually, you hear a click when the water level is reached, and then the valve shuts off; but in these cases, the first click never occurs.)

Now that I live in an apartment building with a good laundry room, I use this washer mostly for small items: socks, underwear, undershirts.

Update (April 2009): It turned out that the water-level sensor had failed. The sign of impending failure is that the sensor will sometimes fail to close the valve when set to "high", but will always close at "low" and "medium" water levels. Then, "medium" will stop working and the valve will only close when the water level is set to "low".Since the manufacturer's warranty had expired, I had the part replaced under my credit-card-based extended warranty program.Haier suggested two authorized repair operators; one of them said that they didn't service this model. The other did, and charged $85 (diagnostic service call) plus $60 (labor) plus $21.52 (part). The part had to be ordered and took about five weeks (!) to arrive.

Senseo SL7832/55 Single Serve Supreme Coffee Machine, Chrome Review

Senseo SL7832/55 Single Serve Supreme Coffee Machine, Chrome

I previously owned the older (non-recalled) Senseo model and loved it; I used it daily for over two years. I recently purchased the deluxe, improved, model and the coffee tastes and smells like plastic. I've gone through an entire package of pods to see if the taste disappears; it has not. I don't know if the plasticy flavor and aroma is due to the deluxe model or the 'improvements' made in the overall design; however, I'm very dissatisfied with the system and will probably return it.

Product Description:
Uniquely designed, this coffeemaker brews a single serving of fresh gourmet coffee at the touch of a button, in under a minute. Because the appliance uses pre-measured coffee pods, the system is hassle-free, easy to clean, and guarantees a fresh, flavorful brew each time. The machine's mild 1.2-bar pressure system and special spray head produce an optimally balanced coffee-filtering process, while its patented "frothing chamber" ensures a frothy coffee layer. Simply fill the removable 32-ounce water reservoir with water, insert a pod, and lock the lid into place. The coffeemaker allows for selecting from multiple serving sizes using its interactive LCD display. Choose from a 3-ounce, 4-ounce, or 5-ounce cup, or a 6-ounce, 8-ounce or 10-ounce mug. Depending on the cup size selected and the number of pods used, it's easy to create a stronger or milder cup of coffee. Other highlights include an adjustable spout that can be raised and lowered to accommodate different size mugs, water-level indicator lights, dishwasher-safe parts for quick cleanup, and a free tea-pod holder. Shaped like a curved cylinder with a round base, the coffeemaker measures approximately 13-1/2 by 12 by 8-1/2 inches.
From the Manufacturer
The Senseo's mild pressure system heats water to 205 degrees Fahrenheit in a boiler consistently every time. Via the mild pressure system, the heated water is forced through the machine and is evenly distributed over the pre-measured coffee pod(s.) Exiting through a pinhole in the pod tray, the newly brewed Senseo coffee is projected into the base of the patented "frothing chamber" where it is lightly aerated to produce the frothy coffee layer. The machine brews at 1.2 bars. Espresso machines typically brew at 9 bars or higher and drip brewers do not use pressure. The machine then distributes either individual or double servings of gourmet Senseo coffee simultaneously--the whole process taking on average only 45 seconds. Easy to Use, Flavorful Results
A Variety of Coffee Choices
Senseo offers a varied selection of blends and flavors. In addition to the first four original blends, Medium, Dark, and Decaffeinated, you can also choose from Breakfast Blend, Paris Vanilla Bistro, Vienna Hazelnut Waltz, Sumatra Blend, Brazil Blend, Kenya Blend, Senseo Cappuccino, and Senseo Espresso.

Hoover Portable Canister Vacuum, Bagged, S1361 Review

Hoover Portable Canister Vacuum, Bagged, S1361
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this Hoover 3 months ago. I currently have a Eureka Mighty Mite and decided that I wanted to have another lightweight canister vacuum for downstairs. I happened to come across the Hoover Bright Orange canister vacuum and thought it was so neat looking, and since it was a Hoover - how could you go wrong.

Well the problems are as follows: suction - fair at best; wand connecting to the head won't stay put - it keeps coming apart no matter how hard you push the wand into the head; the bag - since I wasn't getting any suction I checked the bag and found that though it was only half-filled, the bottom of the bag had disintegrated - this happened twice. I'm not sure if this was due to its close proximity to the filter/motor, but I have never had a bag do this on any other vacuum cleaner I've owned.

Sorry to say, but it's a great looking vacuum, but that's the only thing going for it.

Definitely buy the Eureka Mighty Mite if you're looking for a vacuum for light cleanups.

BUNN HG Phase Brew 8-Cup Home Brewer Review

BUNN HG Phase Brew 8-Cup Home Brewer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After my trusty Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker, Black and Stainless Steel died after 5 years of steady use, I decided to 'upgrade' to a Bunn. The Bunn HG brewer is different from previous Bunns because it heats the water for each brew right before actually brewing, as opposed to inefficiently keeping a water tank heated 24/7, 365 days a year (previous Bunn models). It is for this reason, and the Bunn name, that I enthusiastically dove in and bought it.To make a long story short, I am not so enthusiastic after using it--read on for details.

The carafe. It actually is the cleanest pouring carafe I have ever used--not a drop spilled. However, it consists of a plastic rim attached to a lower portion of glass.Coffee leaks at this junction no matter how fast you pour, producing a steady stream of coffee that dribbles down the outside of the coffee pot and onto the counter top.Not sure if I just got a bad carafe or if this problem is more common.

Full capacity brewing. The way this unit works is you add up to 8 cups of water to the tank. When turned on, it boils this water until the total temp reaches 200 deg F (about 6 mins), then it releases it over 4 minutes through the coffee funnel and into the carafe. The problem is that if the full 8 cups of water are added to the tank, a little comes out during the boil phase from between the spin lid and top of the tank. This then goes down the sides of the tank, drips on the pot and down to the warming plate where it hisses and boils (no, I didn't overfill it--it was right on the max line).I did not experience this with a little under 7.5 cups water in the tank.

Build. This unit actually looks like it came from Captain Picard's ready room and is unique looking. However, there is a lot of open space in it's design--the unit is not compact. Also, there are only two supports holding up the water tank and the brew basket.During the aforementioned boil phase, the vibrations of the boiling water cause the tank to visibly shake. It isn't excessive and in no way harms the unit, but it adds a chintzy feel to this unit and could easily be solved by supporting the tank on three sides. In addition, it is just about 15.5 inches tall, but my cabinets sit exactly 15.25 inches above my countertops. Grrr!

Lastly, 8 cup capacity is just barely enough for me and my wife--a larger capacity would be nice.

In all fairness, the unit makes good coffee. However, so do other coffee makers that only cost half as much.Even if a replacement carafe would solve the leaking coffee problem, I feel there are too many issues present for a $100 coffee brewer.

ADDENDUM (11/4/10): I decided to keep this unit when the place I bought it from wanted to charge a 15% restocking fee (my fault for not reading the fine print).I contacted BUNN about the leaky carafe and they sent out a replacement, which works good--no leaks.Unfortunately, I went to make coffee the next day but nothing happened. The display showed it was working, but it did not heat the water.I called BUNN again, and they sent another brewer. So far, this one is working just fine.I have to say BUNN customer service has been excellent in dealing with my issues--both times sending out replacements promptly.

Product Description:
Phase Brew is different than other drip coffee makers. Unlike ordinary machines, the Phase Brew doesn't "drip" right away. In fact, it doesn't drip at all. That's because the revolutionary Heat and Release Technology heats all the water to the right temperature during the 6-minute heating phase, then quickly releases it through the unique sprayhead for an optimal 4-minute brewing phase and amazing coffee flavor. BUNN Phase Brew - Brews better, not bitter.

Essick Air 821-000 Digital Control Evaporative Console Humidifier Review

Essick Air 821-000 Digital Control Evaporative Console Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been searching for a humidifier (or humidifiers) for my 1900 SF house, and was excited when I came across this model, as it was compact and not ugly like the console humidifiers I have seen.Floor space in my house is somewhat limited, so I liked the fact that its upright design would allow flexibility in placement. Also, I'd had good luck with Bemis in the past (had two H12 console units, in black, which for some reason Bemis no longer offers), so I thought I'd give this a try.My intent was to order a second one if it worked well, since the output ratings on humidifiers are generally quite overstated and I knew I would need more capacity.

What a disappointment! The unit only has two speeds, and the high speed is LOUD.Now, I know that in order to put a lot of moisture in the air youhave to have a pretty good fan blower, but this was ridiculous. Much louder than the H12 I'd had before. Also, the humidity setting only scrolls up, so you have to cycle all the way through to get back to the lowest setting.I guess that's really more of a minor annoyance, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

But the real problem was that the unit just plain didn't add moisture to the air.We left it running all night, and barely any water had evaporated by the next morning. In looking at the unit further, there is a major design flaw- unlike most humidifiers, which draw air into the unit through the wick (where it then picks up moisture), in this model the air is drawn in near the top, and also expelled at the top, while the wick is lower in the unit, so the majority of air just bypasses the wick.

I am returning this unit, and will have to bite the bullet and purchase another H12 console unit. I already own a Honeywell HCM-300T, but it's only rated 3 gallons per day and used in my bedroom at night.I am waiting for it to "die" because I don't like the fact that the cold air blows out of the BOTTOM of the unit, making an unpleasant draft on the floor.I did consider the Honeywell 6011i but don't like the fact that it has two water bottles (less convenient), and also the air blows out the side rather than the top.Bemis will get my business after all, but I can't believe they produced an inferior model like this.

Bosch TAS6515UC Tassimo Single-Serve Coffee Brewer, Twilight Titanium Review

Bosch TAS6515UC Tassimo Single-Serve Coffee Brewer, Twilight Titanium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have wanted a one cup brewing system for a long time but hesitated after sampling the Keurig system beverages at a gourmet cooking shop demonstration. A friend and I made our selections and had the coffee brewed for us. The initial delight with trying out a new machine was quickly replaced with the reality of a very weak, tasteless, stale cup of coffee. We both took a sip and tossed the cups in the trash. The woman demonstrating the system kindly offered us the choice of another variety, but the results were the same. The idea of the beverage system was clearly better than the execution.

Over the last couple of years I've sampled a few other Keurig varieties, and continued to be disappointed. So, I was skeptical, but hoped the Tassimo would produce a higher quality product, and without question it did not disappoint. Will this replace a $1200 espresso bar? No. Will it replace your favorite coffee shop's concoctions? No. But it makes an excellent cup of coffee, a plus when you just want a cup and don't want to brew a whole pot, and it makes excellent coffee drinks along with tea.

The Tassimo Bosch T65 automatic hot beverage system comes with clear instructions and minimal requirements to get started. An optional water filter is included. This filter is very similar to the one I use in my Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee maker. In both instances use of a filter is optional but since the quality of the water used to brew coffee or tea greatly affects the end results,I always use either a filter or filtered water.

The unit is incredibly quiet and efficient - the water heats up immediately. There are warning lights for almost every eventuality from too little water in the tank, to when it is time to descale the unit. The machine itself has a nice solid feel -- not flimsy. The maintenance requirements are no worse than those for any quality coffee maker -- they need to be kept clean for optimal performance.

The discs have a barcode which when read, permits each drink to be precisely brewed for optimal taste. But, if after sampling a disc, a level of customization is desired, there is a manual over-ride to permit a smaller size stronger drink or a larger weaker cup. I made one cup after another without any delay. The water tank is large -- 61 ounces -- so it doesn't require frequent filling.

A criticism of the Tassimo over the Keurig is the availability and selection of the discs but I found the discs in many easily accessible retailers including a couple big box store's grocery departments, and of course, they are all over the internet. Currently two free packages of T discs are available when registering the product on the Tassimo web site. This provides a great opportunity to sample a variety of discs and find favorites. The discs I've sampled are listed below. There are currently five different Starbucks varieties available alone. Tazo and Twinings teas are also among the selections, and many more I look forward to tasting.

Starbucks Café Verona - my favorite by far. The coffee is strong and delicious. Even when cold the coffee maintains its flavor. Not quite the coffee shop quality but very close.

Starbucks House Blend - very good. The cup brewed was delicious but the flavor took a drastic dive as the cup cooled and became almost undrinkable. Drink it hot.

Gevalia Signature Blend - this is the only variety I tried and would not buy again.Although it isn't weak, the coffee tastes like bad vending machine brew. A little stale with a flavor reminiscent of coffee brewed through old gym socks. Ugh.

Gevalia Cappuccino - good flavor. The brew is almost a perfect balance of milk (2% so relatively low fat) to espresso with a decent, although not luxurious amount of foam. The coffee is strong enough to have a presence in the cup, although an extra espresso disc can be used to create a stronger coffee flavor.

Gevalia Latte - good flavor. Again, a nice balance between the milk (same 2% variety as above) and espresso flavors. I preferred the latte but would buy both again.

Maxwell House Latte - coffee flavor too weak. This latte is definitely improved by using two espresso discs with one creamer (same 2% used in the Gevalia products) otherwise the coffee flavor disappears into the background and the milk is entirely too prominent.

Maxwell House House Blend Decaffeinated -- a medium brew. The coffee isn't as bad as the Gevalia, but it also isn't Starbucks. There is a slighly smoky aftertaste, which I actually liked. This will do nicely when I've met my caffeine threshold. Currently, the only decaffeinated options are this one, Gevalia Signature Brew (see below) and Gevalia Espresso. Hopefully, Starbucks will create one soon.

Suchard Hot Chocolate Syrup - good tasting chocolate but odd drink. This is a very watery, non-dairy chocolate drink. I've read reviews from people who adore the drink, but I would definitely add a little milk or cream. I did try using creamer T disc but the hot chocolate lost too much of the chocolate flavor. The Suchard, and an espresso disc and a little milk made a passable mocha, but the milk needs to be heated. I understand the Milka T discs, initially only available in the foreign market are now available and that variety makes a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Milka will be in my next disc order, and I will post an update. I will keep experimenting with my remaining Suchard discs and see if I can find a great combination of flavors.

Twinings Chai Tea Latte - very pleased with flavor but contains Splenda and sugar - weird.Nevertheless, I found this chai tea latte delicious, and will definitely buy it again. That said, I do not have a problem with Splenda. Some people have a sensitivity to the sweetener and also notice an aftertaste. I noticed no aftertaste and wouldn't have known the drink contained Splenda if I hadn't read the package. The creamer is the same 2% product noted in the latte and cappuccino products.

Although not necessary, I found using a warm cup (microwave with a little water for 30 seconds) added to the enjoyment. I look forward to sampling the Seattle's Best Coffees, the Milka hot chocolate, the other Twinnings and Tazo teas. This is a quality machine with plenty of delicious coffee and tea selections readily available and it lives up to the promise of an automatic beverage system, something the Keurig system failed to do for me.

Update:
Milka Hot Chocolate -- did not disappoint -- it is a creamy rich hot chocolate that is absolutely delicious. For mocha simply add an espresso disc. This is one variety I will always have on hand. And, there are only 90 calories per serving and 2.5 grams of fat.

Gevalia Caramel Latte Macchiato -- has a decidedly artificial caramel flavor which although not overpowering is unpleasant. I won't buy again. A better idea would be to buy a quality caramel coffee syrup and add it to the Gevalia Latte.

Gevalia Decaffeinated Signature Blend coffee -- ugh, not surprisingly it has the same dreadful flavor as the regular Gevalia Signature Blend coffee. The Maxwell House decaffeinated T disc is far superior.

Update II:
Maxwell House Morning Blend -- brews a large 12 ounce cup of medium strength coffee. The taste is fine, again slightly smoky. I will definitely keep this on-hand for emergencies.

Maxwell House French Roast -- produces a decent bold cup of coffee. I find the quality of the Maxwell House T discs superior overall to the Gevalia regular coffee brews. The espresso Gevalia disc is the only exception because the Maxwell House espresso is too weak.

Starbucks Africa Kitamu -- absolutely amazing bold cup of coffee without bitterness or any aftertaste. This variety has taken over as my favorite from Starbucks Verona. If you drink bold coffee black, this is the T disc to buy. Delicious.

Update III:
2/19/2010 The recently released Starbucks Latte Primo and Cappuccino Primo are absolutely superior to the Maxwell and Gevalia milk based coffee drinks. Starbucks has created their own milk T-Discs and both the cappuccino and latte versions are a significant improvement. Both milk discs contain a small amount of sugar although I did not detect any sweetness in taste. Perhaps the sugar helps balance the cooked milk flavor. The most important improvement is found in the taste of the espresso T-Disc that comes with both drinks. The flavor is fabulous and we can only hope that in the future the espresso discs will be sold separately. I wrote a detailed review of both the Starbucks Cappuccino Primo and Latte Primo under the actual product listings. I also added photos of the drinks brewing because they layered so beautifully. I continue to use my Tassimo daily and remain absolutely delighted by its performance.

Update IIII:
12/19/2010 I recently ordered two Carte Noire coffees, Kenya and Voluptuoso, from the Tassimo website and found both delicious. This is a European brand that although readily available on the website is a bit more difficult to locate in stores in the US. The Kenya variety is sold on Amazon and the Voluptuoso is available in a variety pack, but as I write this both are out of stock, but they are worth tracking down.

Regarding cup size, they rest between a shot of espresso and a full cup of coffee which also accurately describes the flavor. These are bold, yet smooth flavored strong coffee blends that are not in the least bit bitter and have a lovely layer of crema (dark creamy foam) resting on top. I highly recommend both varieties.

Product Description:
With the touch of a button, this single-serve coffee brewer makes coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, as well as cappuccinos and lattes with real milk. The machine uses Tassimo discs (T-Discs), which contain precisely measured amounts of the ingredients for each drink and are sealed to protect the flavors inside. With barcode technology, the brewer scans the barcode printed on the label of each T-Disc to identify the drink desired. The system then expertly adjusts to the optimal brewing time, temperature, and amount of water needed. Simply insert a T-Disc, press the button, and in about a minute, sit back and enjoy a coffeehouse-quality hot beverage, one cup at a time. Try over 40 beverage varieties from 12 distinct brands, including Starbucks. All the brewing happens inside the T-Disc using a unique inverse flow, so beverages pour directly from the T-Disc into the cup, allowing for different drinks to be prepared one after the other with no flavor transfer from cup to cup. There's no need to measure, no hassle, and virtually no cleanup. In addition, it automatically reverts to stand-by mode after every brew cycle in order to save energy when not in use. Other highlights include customizable drink size and strength, a convenient front-access on/off switch, a user-friendly multilingual LCD display that shows the steps of the brewing process, an exclusive flow-through water heater for faster brewing, an extra-large 67-ounce removable water tank, and an automatic cleaning and de-scaling program. Two MAVEA water filters come included. Housed in a compact, modern design, the sleek-looking coffee brewer measures 13-1/5 by 8 by 11 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker Review

Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, the reason we bought this is because, in general, percolators make great tasting coffee. They can turn even the worst quality beans into a good cup of coffee.Initially, the Presto lived up to our expectations. And after doing the following, it is once again making great cups of coffee.

Tip #1 - Grind your coffee using the appropriate setting.

After some usage, we would at times get a mouthful of grinds. We realized it was important to use the percolator setting on the coffee grinder at the supermarket.Since then, an occasional coffee grind finds its way into our cup.

Tip #2 - Clean the filter basket with a brush.

Despite cleaning the pot before each usage, the coffee was gradually getting weaker each day. We then realized that the holes in the bottom of the filter basket were clogged. We could not unclog them using a sponge so I started poking each one individually with a toothpick before deciding there was no way we would have the time or patience to do it every day.So, we tried a brush with plastic bristles and, within seconds, the basket was completely unclogged. So, we bought a small brush with a long handle and use it to clean the filter basket and the bottom of the pot.

Replacement Gaskets & Screen for 6 Cup Moka Express Review

Replacement Gaskets & Screen for 6 Cup Moka Express
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 6 cup moka express and a Brikka, they are both excellent but the Brikka produces a lot of crema which is the main reason I bought it after buying the Moka express.

The moka express is still working fine after 6 months of use, no leakages ..nothing, but the Brikka started leaking after only three months of use, I guess it's because of the high pressure it produces, so it was time for a gasket change.

I searched AMAZON for a Brikka gasket but couldn't find any, this was the closest I found, I swapped my Mokas gasket with the Brikkas and it worked fine, so I ordered this and it was a perfect fit, you just need to keep it tightly closed for a while so that the gasket takes the shape of the coffee filter. Now your set for great espresso.

Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77 Review

Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While it worked, it was a great machine. The coffee was great and so was the hot chocolate.Very convenient for the whole family. I even found K-cups at my local Stop and Shop grocery store for only 5.99 for a box of 12.

I received this for Christmas and it stopped working on New Year's day. Machine rumbles displaying "Not Ready" then shuts off. After keeping it powered off for about an hour it started working again, but then konked out, once again, mid brew.I wrote to customer service on Keurig's website and didn't get a reply after 5 days, so I called their 866 number.

After waiting on hold for approx. an hour for a technician, I was told that I was not allowed to wait any longer on hold and that they would call me back after 24 to 48 hours. The person I spoke to said that they have had an influx of calls with this problem since Christmas.Must be a bad batch that went out.I was also told that if they had replied by email, they would have told me to call, so don't waste your time with email.

I purchased the machine from Costco, but no longer have the box, so I don't know if I can return to them. If I am not able to get any satisfaction from Keurig, I will try going back to Costco.I will update this review with the final status of this problem.

1/10/10update:I had to wait 3 days for a technician to call me back. The technician told me to use a paper clip and make sure the top and bottom spouts were clear and we ran through several hot water cycles on different cup settings.

I don't know if this 'fixed' the problem because at that point it had been working again. The tech. said that the hot cocoa cups could clog the spouts (although I do run a hot water cycle after each hot cocoa cup is 'brewed'). She also said there may be a problem with the separate filter that allows me to use my own coffee as opposed to their K-Cups. After her call, I stopped using the hot cocoa and the separate filter and so far have not had any problems.

1/26/10 update- The machine started shutting off yet again.I contacted customer service and they promptly told me that they would send me a new machine. The new machine is working perfectly (so far) and the "motor" definitely sounds different.I am hopeful. I had to send them a part from the old machine within 30 days in order to not be charged for the new machine.

When it works, this really is a great machine and so convenient. I hope I got a good one this time around.

Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker Review

Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose this grind and brew after reading all of the reviews for this and similar machines. Frankly, I am surprised by the negative comments. This is an easy to use machine once it is set up properly (the bean hopper takes a little of effort to snap in). The coffee tastes great and the parts are very easy to clean quickly. While the instruction book is not clear, Cuisinart was very helpful on the phone. The machine does not know how much water you put in, so if you set it to grind coffee for 6 cups and you have 8 cups of water in it, it will process all 8 cups of water. Other than this small quirk, the machine is a small wonder and I do not feel compelled to go out for coffee in the morning. The thermos carafe will keep the coffee quite warm for a few hours, even when the carafe is not warmed up with hot water. Wondering why it took me so long to go ahead and buy this machine. This is the best model; my neighbor has the first generation/second generation machine which is hard to clean and has a large footprint. Save your money and buy this model!

Now that I have had the machine for a month and a half: It requires some cleaning to get the fine grounds that compress and stop the grinder and ground coffee to get into the filter for brewing. I use a bamboo chopstick and a skewer to break up the compressed fine grounds that impede the machine from working properly. (Unplug the machine and put it over the sink area). I also use compressed air to blow out the fine ground particles. Still, this is a small maintenance to allow for great coffee in the AM.

Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat Review

Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this unit in my basement about 8 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since.

Things I noticed:

If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.)

If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit.I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didn't think of that.Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out it's out forever.

If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.)I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well.

The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting.

Has three fan settings: med, high and quiet."Quiet" really is quiet, and could probably work just fine in a bedroom.Though, it does warm the room it's in.How much it warms it depends on the humidity setting.

Four settings: The humidty level (humidstat) can be set to "continuous dehumidification" (which is the default setting), 50%, 60% and 70%.The fan will continue to run but the dehumidification processor will turn off when it reaches the selected humidity level.Cool.I mean, that's when the fan will just blow room-temp air.

A full drainage tank will stop the unit and illuminate a "tank full" indicator light.

The unit is not that heavy -- maybe for some, but not nearly as heavy as some people make it sound. It's 30.8 pounds.

According to the instructions: You will need at least 21 cm (about 8 inches) of clearance in front, behind and side to side.Air blows out of the top of the unit, so you'll need to make sure it's clear as well.

There are movable louvers on the top to direct the air straight up, 45-degrees or almost straight ahead.

Power consumption: CFM-25E is 220W//CFM-40E is 330W

I highly recommend this model dehumidifier.

***15-month UPDATE:It is still working like a champ! We haven't had one single problem with it, and I don't foresee ever really having one in the near future.I've been running this thing nonstop and it has only required me to clean the filter on the back (which takes 5 minutes.)It has remained as quiet as the day I bought it.It's awesome!

Product Description:
The 40-pint Soleus Air dehumidifier (model CFM-40) removes unwanted moisture from the air to create a more comfortable environment in your home or office. Weighing under 31 pounds, it can be conveniently moved via its bottom caster wheels from room to room within your home and set up in just minutes. Taking advantage of refrigeration technology, the dehumidifier powerfully emoves partial moisture from the air to decrease the humidity level of the room and keep the indoor air dry and comfortable. The dehumidifier uses the no CFC refrigerant to protect the environment and to reduce pollution.
Since different rooms in your home call for different humidity levels, the unit's adjustable humidistat offers 3 humidity settings. The magnetic float won't become stuck with mineral deposits like other mechanical floats, and it provides a more accurate water level reading and prevents overflow. Other features include manual and soft touch control, silent operation, and an automatic shut-off to prevent overflow. The unit measures 14-1/2 by 10-1/4 by 21 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 30.8 pounds. It's backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

When we first opened up the box and opened up the pool cover we couldn't believe how thin it was. Because we the leaves are falling and the pool is ready to be closed we put it on the pool. We will wait the winter to see if it holds up. I am very skeptical that it will stay in one piece through our windy Wisconsin winter.

This is a terrible product, it seemed to be fine within the first few weeks, then it turned into the worst skimmer you can buy. I originally bought one for my 90 gal tank, but soon replaced it with a skimmer that could handle the tank, I now have the SeaClone 100 on my 20 gallon tank with just an undulated triggerfish in. Product Description:
All pets, especially cats, can become dehydrated for a few simple reasons. Cats are famous for being very picky about most everything in their lives. Most experienced cat owners tell stories about a cat that would rather starve than eat something they hate. When it comes to a cats water supply, they have strong likes and dislikes. Study after study has shown that cats prefer water that is at 61F because that is the temperature of natural spring water. Additional studies have shown that cats dislike water that has an odor such as chlorine. Plastics are porous and therefore retain the smell of chlorine or other chemicals used to clean the bowl as well as chemicals in room air such as fire retardants required to be in rugs and furniture. The facts are in and prove that cats will only drink the correct amount of water (1oz/lb/day) IF the water has no repulsive smell and is below room temperature.Owners have different requirements for their cats water supply. On-line product reviews have pointed out the more serious problems with available pet fountains such as; 1. impossible to get clean or sanitary, 2. flooding from leaking bowls, 3. filters that are only passive and therefore NOT effective at removing chemical and toxins4. Pumps that fail because the pumps are not protected from debris added to or falling into the bowl.Experienced cat veterinarians agree that anything that can increase a cats water intake is highly desirable and may reduce or delay the very common and expensive conditions such as kidney disease, cystitis and urinary tract infections. This fountain is the culmination of three years of research and development which now provides a fountain that will not injure the cat in any manner or inconvenience or harm the owner. The bargin with a Glacier Point for Cats product is in the quality. The Quick Start and cleaning instructions is available on the internet.
